Recently rooted my device and restored OS before sending in for RMA. Somehow Sony knew that the tablet had been altered and didn't allow me to get fixed. Does anyone know the proper steps to restore to warrantable shape? Seems that dual recovery lingers after a restore. Afraid to root now and kill the warranty on my other tablet. Can anyone comment?

When you say "restored os", do you mean to say you reflashed a stock ftf rom? If so, when you unlocked bootloader in the beginning, did you backup your "DMA" codes first so you could restore them later?
Flashing a stock ftf room should overwrite your custom recovery, at least my understanding anyhow.
No I restored from the boot menu restore option.

I backed up keys but didn't restore because of glass damage. I was under the impression doing a restore would overwrite all. Perhaps not.

No, you will need to re-flash stock firmware, then re-install the keys. That should take care of things.
I see. So if I root and the tablet has broken glass or digitizer I'd be out of luck. At least that tells me how to do it after warranty is up. The screen has broke so many times I'm scared to void my extended warranty now. The old one is a brick now. I guess I'll have to live without. It mostly allowed me to unlock with nfc and ad block so not too much.

There used to be an app available, that would allow a windows GUI for devices that had broken/dead digitizers. Basically it ran via USB connection. Not sure if it would help you in this case though.
As far as returns, and a rooted tablet, this would probably depend on the service center you sent it to. Most of them will service a rooted tablet if you press the issue and argue your point. Especially seeings a cracked display has nothing to do with the root.
Hope you get it sorted.
I had to buy another tab as they won't service anything that has altered software even if you want to pay. Scared me enough to not root the new one. I agree with one having nothing to do with the other but in Laredo that's how they see things. Disappointed as they seem developer friendly, until warranty that is.

Well, that definitely sucks mate. I think it may just depend on service center. Well, as a good thing, as the tab gets a little older, you will find some available on E-Bay that you can used for parts. I suppose most will be bricked devices.
Have you tried researching the part number for a glass/digitizer? Sometimes you can find these as they pretty much all come from china. Usually we try to find the tablets service manual, (as in the case of Acer tablets) and get the part number.
Yeah I'm just going to keep unrooted until warranty runs out. Way too much for a paperweight. I may fix the old one but already bought a new one figuring they must do some things for water proofing and such making it not so easy. If I could find something that works without digitizer...last time I was stuck on wrong screen to navigate. Appreciate the advice/information.

Hey, not being one to give up so easily. If that broken tab still boots, you can probably use this
http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...n-screen-from-the-comfort-of-your-windows-pc/
Might be able to re-flash a stock ftf rom.
The part where you select language is right where the screen is broke. Since it doesn't auto rotate you can't get past first screen to turn on USB debugging and the like. Its a wash as they have already voided the warranty. The worst is they won't even let you pay to repair it. Good thing in case I might need again. I don't forsee losing warranty for root though. Too expensive to play around. If nfc worked while screen locked I wouldn't really use root. Or not much.

Well, I've had it for about 32 hours now, and I like it, rooted it and put Urukdroid on there on the internal storage since I won't actually have my external cards for a few days. I have more money now and I kinda want to return it and get something stronger like a g-tablet or something tegra 2 based & 512mb of ram+.
My question is, how would I go about returning it to 100% stock for a return? Would flashing the stock firmware suffice? I would probably have to remove the SDE & urukdroid's partitions so it seems a little more complicated.
once you installed the SDE you voided the warranty. I dont know if you can return it now.
Yeah I figured that was the case, since it even said it was "watermarked" on the archos site.
Thanks, Ill either sell it and get the gtab or keep it I guess.

If you return it to stock, warranty seems to stick. I had mine rooted and loaded up UrukDroid on it and I was having hardware problems so I reverted it back to stock (just download the stock firmware from Archos site). I placed a warranty support ticket with them, did some troubleshooting, they said I needed to send it in for repair so I did and they sent me a new device.
They never asked me anything about it being rooted or being loaded with the SDE. I would call HHGregg and see if they'll take it back.

shouldn't be a problem then, they're not the most tech savy and most likely wouldn't know how to check if you installed sde on it.
just go back to stock and take it back.
@Them not being tech savvy, they were strangely more intelligent than most stores....some of the workers had rooted tablets/ect and that was one of the things I discussed with them.
Anyways, I decided to keep it, the only gripe is it will never do mediocre to high end games well. I like it though. Thanks everyone.
Hi XDA people,
I bought my Galaxy S3 2 weeks ago and I discovered this morning a crack on the left side of the screen.
It's small, but quite annoying when you spend more than 500 euros in something like this.
I have attached a picture of the crack.
I've never had a crack like that on a phone before (my 2 years old HTC Desire screen is perfect and has been through a lot...).
It looks weird to me as there's no impact. I don't know where this is from.
It never felt or hit anything.
If anybody here has an idea about what caused this, I'm interested. I suspect a defect.
Next question is: what can I do?
I'm using JB already so my warranty is probably void.
Is there a way to make sure the crack won't get bigger?
Thank you for your help.
You're warranty is not void, flash the original stock Rom with Odin. Before that use triangle away to rest flash counter. After the flash check that your flash counter is at 0.
And send the phone to warranty. Wait for and confirmation from someone more experienced. But this is how I sent my old note to repair center.

Some of Galaxy S3 is cheaply made.
Exactly, but make sure use STOCK rom preferably for your country and use Triangle away (id recommend uninstalling it afterwards) ..Good luck!
Thanks for your replies.
I will restore to stock ROM and reset the flash counter.
If I send it to a repair center, will they fix it for free?
Rooted or not rooted has nothing to do with the cracked. Most probably Sammy going to blame on your careless. Good luck though.

Anyone else having instances where their phone starts doing stuff by itself when the screen is on? I use the SHOW TOUCHES option in developer options and it shows the screen registering multiple touches all over the screen when I'm not touching it. Started happening recently, which is odd because nothing has changed. Phone is stock.
Do you have a case on the phone? Might be dirt, debris, or moisture between the case and the screen. Remove case, clean the case edges and edge of the screen.

Did you try flashing different rom?

Sounds similar to the issue some people were having with the E4GT. I know my wife's previous phone (E4GT) had issues with the menu opening on its own and it didn't matter whether or not she had a case on it. First I've heard of this issue on the EVO LTE.

Usually that means the digitizer is going bad (assuming there is no liquid damage inside your phone).I would try a hard reset first and if that doesn't work take it to a S&R center.
If you take it to a Sprint Service and Repair center and you are paying for ESRP or TEP on your monthly bill, then they will replace the display or your phone for free. If you're not paying for ESRP or TEP, a corporate store will charge you $35 to fix or replace it, a third party store will usually charge you $35 plus the price of the part.

Are the Spring Service centers replacing digitizers now? I thought I read somewhere that they weren't. I sure hope they are now.

From what I've read, your symptom of phantom screen presses may be a sign of some form of malware on your phone. I would suggest taking a close look at the apps running. I'm not sure however what tools would be useful to discover the culprit. A factory reset would, obviously, clear the problem item. Good luck!
Wow theres quite a bit of respsonses... Nonetheless, I am almost certain that you are having a kernel issue. Which then translates to a voltage/ground issue.
As some people stated, the OG Evo did have some problems with voltages. IE, on my Evo OG, I would sometimes not be able to pull down the menu (happened to ALOT of people not just me), and i decided to run a wire from the battery terminal (on the ground). After doing this, i had an exposed wire hanging out. Now the problem would still persist, i couldnt bring down the menu. However, if i TOUCHED the wire, my menu bar would work just fine. Once I stopped touching the wire (ungrounded) the menu bar would not work.
A little while after that, there was a kernel with tweaked voltages. I flashed this kernel, and my menu bar ALWAYS worked fine (without the wire trick)... Pretty sure it was one of Chad.Goodman's kernels.
Needless to say, a little while after, HTC released an update with an updated kernel, and no one ever had that problem again.
Take my advice, root your phone (it is much safer, secure, and private to have a rooted phone than not, but I won't get into the specifics here). After having rooted it, flash the AwesomeSauce 2.3 kernel (its over at themikmik forums). You won't need to S-OFF you can just use the S-ON installer. I would recommend using the lowest overclockable ( 1.7ghz)
If, after this, your phone still has the problem, your phone is defective. In which case, you can RUU it, and it will be back to stock. Either way, Sprint does not care about you being rooted. The only thing they CAN do is tell you that rooting your phone is not recommended, and they will flash your phone back to stock. So you do not have to worry about rooting.
Thanks. I'm familiar with rooting. Just dislike dealing with bugs and/or missing stuff now that im too busy to keep track of them. To me, this looks like a hardware issue (like someone mentioned with the ground). Going to hard reset this weekend and monitor. I can't find a good way to reproduce it at will for tep replacement yet.

Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a hardware failure, given that now the touchscreen doesn't work in the middle either. FUN!
Hello Xda I've soft bricked my S3 I can access download mode.
I got into this problem cause I flashed Supernexus it worked fine for a few days. Until I went into bootloop and couldn't do anything I couldn't access recovery so I just flashed the stock rom and now the phone only boots into download mode and can be viewed by odin also it says on the phone please connect to kies in recovery. I done this put the phone doesn't get recognised any ideas and help will be appreciated

They won't help because its rooted and stuff also i have a slight crack so sending it into service will cost me like 200$ to repair
What build are you using? Looks like I'm moving away from that ROM 0.o

yeah, the other option is to throw the phone away. your call.
or you can also be doing something wrong.
or you can hope for me to be wrong.
i've been searching around an they calling this the ''sudden death syndrome'' and can happen at any time to a select few all you have to do is send it into service and get it repaired for free but i can't because i've got a slight hairline crack so my warranty is void and they are asking for around £150 for repairing this phone
You have a software problem not hardware. The crack has nothing to do with that. I had a crack on my S1 but sent it to service for new USB port - no problems.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I've rang them again after you said this and said sorry we can't do anything until u repair the screen by us or yourself. Also they said we can't guarantee that the problem I got was not from my crack so they said no to repairing for free they asking for 135£ to repair the crack
Then they'll replace the motherboard for free

I just bought a second hand ZU (as you do...) that was advertised as "SIM not recognised". The smartarse that I am thought hmm quick buck/cheap Ultra for SWMBO.
"Yes darling I'm sure I can fix it, just look at all the posts on XDA that we have fixed - easy"
Turns out that no amount of downgrading is going to get the IMEI to return as it sitting there just fine, winking at me and laughing quietly, in a mocking sort of way.
So is there any way to get a sim card to work?, should I take the back off? should I on sell it? should I just give it to the Mrs as is?

You could contact @cvxcvx as he specialises is this kind of thing for a small fee (really is small by the way). He can remotely access your phone and has all the tools to legitimately restore imei's.
He may only be able to for Samsung phones, but worth a try.
