[Q] Some simple questions about the Evo 3D - HTC EVO 3D

Hey guys, I was considering buying a HTC Evo 3D and a bit confused about this. The things I'd like to know:
1. I've read that there are two types of this phone: CDMA and GSM. Could you guys explain what is the difference between the two?
2. Will the phone work properly if I order it from the US and use it in Hungary, Europe. There is no Verizon or Sprint here.
3. If I buy it and SIM unlock it can I use it here?
4. What is s-off?
5. What is your experience with the phone in general if you have it?
As a note: We can buy phones here too, but they cost too much. I'm not sure if they are CDMA or GSM though.
Thanks in advance guys, and have a nice day!

CDMA uses ESN/MEID which is hard coded into phone.
GSM uses sim cards.
There is more difference but those are the easiest to identify.
S-off is security off, and different from unlocking.
Unlocking allows custom rom and recovery.
s-off allows more, and makes things easier to do, but has greater risk of bricking the phone if you do something wrong.
I love the 3d, best phone.

Thanks for your answer!
Is there a reliable way to identify which phone uses which type? If I'll buy one I'll need to know if it accepts SIM cards.
So S-off is some kind of root, or similar?
Are we talking about the same "unlock"? I meant unlock as SIM unlock, so the phone accepts any kind od SIM card.
Do you know if there's a safe way to SIM unlock the phone, here on XDA? I have some experience with unlocking but I've never done it on an HTC.

We are talking about bootloader, unlock or s-off.
Sim unlock is different.
Also can tell by hboot version. Odd numbered seems to be gsm and even is cdma.

Yeah, I see. But do you know if there's a way tounlock these phones? I've seen some threads here that might me working but I'd like to know if you've used them.
Also a phone with a bad ESN is only blocked at the current carrier, right?

Bad ESN means it CDMA phone and those don't have SIM card slot. If you want to buy it from US search for GSM model. There is a way to SIM unlock every phone, but in most cases you have to pay for it

Thank you for your reply! Knowing this is valuable when buying from the US, yeah. I was looking for a free way to unlock it, through tutorials and such because I can't and wouldn't like to afford paying for it anyway!
I recently had a tough time flashing regional firmware to Samsung phones... When I flashed a Czech one or with a different carrier it didn't have signal. The EVO 3D's firware is not regional, right?
Greetings from Hungary!

US is a specific market and you should think twice before buying a phone from US. There are ways to SIM unlock Evo, but they require s-off. I suggest you do some serious reading before going through with your purchase. I know a guy who bought mint condition Evo 3d from US very cheap and now can only look at it and cry because he got CDMA version which doesn't have SIM card slot

Yeah I was lucky to discover this early! If there are no regional firwares I think it's a go.
Anything I need to know about S-OFF
A quick look at the forums and stuff tells me that it can be a bit complicated to do on some phones... Is it carrier dependant? Different HBOOTs can be S-OFFed differently?

Wanna ask some stupid question, what is unlocked phone? If I buy, still can use in my country?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
My understanding is unlocking a phone only works for GSM phones as they use SIM cards. Unlocking it allows it to be used with other carriers on the GSM network. For a real example, I unlocked my wife's Samsung Captivate on AT&T and she gave it to her brother who was able to use it with T-Mobile. With CDMA phones, you don't unlock them. You have to flash certain things to the phone so it can be used with other CDMA carriers. Example, again, a real one, a guy at my work had an Evo 4G flashed to Metro PCS, however, I don't think he had 4G. To be honest, I think unlocking a phone is easier than flashing one to another carrier.
If anyone can elaborate further, please do.
EDIT: As for use in your country, that is outside my realm of knowledge. Never had to use a phone outside of the USA. Sorry, can't help there. By the way, where are you?
Yes. most other countries use GSM phones. Phones are usually locked to the carrier that sells them. Nowadays its very easy to unlock the sim. Once unlocked you should be able to insert any major carrier's sim card and phone should work just fine.
Unlocking bootloader and rooting phone is different than sim unlock.
They have a new device out, I don't know how well it works because I've never tried it but its out there:
http://www.dhgate.com/universal-sim...-cell/p-ff808081371757e4013726905fd16172.html
Also too, One way to unlock your phone for free in USA (I paid $9.00 for this information a long time ago) is call your phone company. Tell them that you'll be traveling abroad and need to Unlock your phone so you can use it over there.
They will email you the Unlock code for free after you give them your IEMI and serial number.
The method I used to unlock the Samsung Captivate was by rooting the phone and using a free app from the Market to give me the unlock code, which is now the Play Store, of course. All free. No phone calls made. Total of 20 minutes.

I think this is the best method for those who do not want to root. I'm not sure if the GSM Evo 3D is having the same HBOOT 1.5 issue that the CDMA folks are having.

Yeah, I'm over here in the good ol' US of A. I know GSM is more prominent outside of here. GSM tends to have the fastest data speeds, but, CDMA has the best cellular coverage.

SIM Unlock for US networks

I don't really know a lot about SIM related stuff, so I apologize...
Can the Rezound be SIM unlocked for US networks? The only thread I've found on another site says no but I think the repliers were referring to bootloader unlocking, not SIM. I am S-Off if that matters..just don't want to spend money on those sites that use IMEI to unlock, then get nowhere.

I read elsewhere that the sim had to be activated on a prepaid phone first. Not sure of that is correct but something to look into.

Just to be sure about the specifics.
HTC rezound on the leaked 4.03.605.2 ruu
You put in a T-Mobile sim card in the rezound
And you had voice calling, texting, mms, and data working?
You didn't need to modify anything in the phone, change settings, add a T-Mobile apn, root, or Rom the phone?
It will be nice if you will write a short "how to" for moving a rezound onto USA T-Mobile.
Also were there any frequency mode restrictions?
Data speed was good?
Thanks,
Howard
Thanks guys...will keep messing with it.
Verizon would not give me an unlock code because according to them the phone isn't capable yet.
Rezound is globally capable and works on other US carriers

The FCC ruling that Verizon is responding to by making the Rezound, Razr, Droid 4, etc. globally capable also opens the phones up for use by other carriers. This was "Big Red's" initial impetus for not unlocking the phones native features. So yes, you can use this phone on Tmobile's network.

Have you tried to enter T-Mobile's APN?
It won't save and show in the list.
It appears Verizon locked it to only use Verizon's APN?
when booted into the bootloader there is a simlock item on the menu.
if one has s-off and an appropriate config.dat file on the removable microSD card it is supposed to SIMM unlock, so one doesn't get that sim locked picture on the phone after inserting another vendor's SIMM card.
this information is from reading, not from doing it.
I'm running T-Mobile US (EDGE) just fine. 100%
Did nothing but put the simcard in the phone and flashed a GSM ROM (Downtown).
I did flash the latest radio and firmware with S-OFF but everything was working before hand.
I activated the Prepaid Simcard on T-Mobiles website and used the Rezounds IMEI without problems just added the right APN for MMS and DATA.

Thanks Tachi,
I plan to order a T-Mobile SIM card to play with on monday. it will have 10 minutes of talk time, but no data. I still have quite some time left on my Verizon contract before I switch to T-Mobile. This might also be a good option for my daughter.
First, I will see how this works on my stock rooted 4.03.605.2 system with htcdev unlock and s-off. If I get the SIM locked warning, I will try installing a hboot loadable SIM unlock config.dat file I got from a website - it has my IMEI inside it.
I don't know why, but I can not enter the T-Mobile apn in my system, even if I switch the phone into gsm mode.
Then I will try the downtown ROM, if it is ok to load it ontop of 4.03.605.2
thanks,
Howard

[Q] HTC Droid Dna: Unlocked or Not?

Hello Community,
I recently purchased a used HTC Droid DNA on eBay. The user couldn't tell me very much about the phone beyond describing it's exterior condition to me. I didn't have to play with this phone for very long before I realized what a pleasurable device this would be to use, especially for someone upgrading from a Motorola Bionic. HOWEVER, it also wasn't very long into my usual customizations that I realized, that like my Bionic early on, doing anything fun on this phone is a son-of-a-*****.
I want to eventually root this phone, flash Cyanogenmod, and then flash it to Pageplus Cellular, but first things first. I really don't want to wait 5 days for a AT&T SIM card to get here from Minnesota or wherever, so does anyone know of a way I can tell if this device is already unlocked? Perhaps someone knows of an application or some other software than can tell me, or maybe there is something in the phone's settings? Anything at all would be nice.
Thank you,
Jack2402 =)
If you boot into the boot loader (turn off device and hold power and vol down) it should say s on or s off. That's the best way to tell, you are looking for s off. Moonshine will get you unlocked and s off though really easily

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you telling me how to unlock saftey? Isn't that different from unlocking the SIM so I can flash it Pageplus? Or am I confused. Forgive me, I've rooted several phones and I've flashed one phone but I've never had to unlock one because I usually purchase them from sellers who already know there're unlocked.

It's sim unlocked. Your best bet is to wait for your sim to arrive put it in and just change the apn settings to match page plus to get mms. Once you do that you should be good to go.
As for flashing and rooting it's actually easy thanks to beaups and the moonshine process he created for getting s off.
Head over to the development section and it's stickeyed
Run moonshine and follow the easy steps and you will get an s off phone and unlocked bootloader. After that load a custom recovery and then back up with a nandroid backup and flash any rom or kernel of your choosing.
If you need any help with that feel free to PM me and I will be happy to help you.

Actually, for the last year or so, every LTE device that I've been aware of from VZW has come SIM unlocked, included DNA and Iphone 5. I think VZW isn't too afraid of people leaving, and if they do, they have a nasty ETF they can hit you with. And ding your credit if you don't pay it. And if you already have bad credit, then VZW already has a hefty deposit. So, yeah.

It's not quite that easy to get mms working. Verizon's stock ROM uses a whitelist for APN types and will not allow a MMS APN at all, you can enter the settings but they will be lost and MMS will NOT work, spent 2 hours on the phone with AT&T support working on this very issue.
If you're going to use the DNA on a GSM carrier for daily use, it's best to flash something like NOS M7 GSM version as this will allow the proper APN to be set up and mms will work. Once I switched to a ROM meant for GSM carriers, I have found MMS to be 100% reliable.

You will need to do some digging to find a guide (or pay for a service) to flash it to PagePlus. The ability to flash from Verizon to PagePlus is unrelated to the locked status of the SIM slot. I believe you will only get 3G on PagePlus, as well.
Yes, the SIM slot is unlocked for use on GSM carriers, but that won't matter if you're looking to flash to PagePlus.

Done with Sprint but need advice

Ok so let me begin with saying that I am done with Sprint. The 5.0 update was the last straw for me. Anyway I have two Sprint M7's that are rooted and s-off. Is there really a difference in hardware between them or can I change CIDs/MIDs perhaps flash a TMO RUU and get them to work or will I be simply bricking them and making them unsellable?
Obviously I'd like to keep them because I don't want to buy new phones right now but if I can't I can't. I was just thinking the hardware it self would be the same.
Thanks,
MG

While they are the same in many ways they are different in their radios (CDMA vs GSM) and their partition tables. The different partition tables is what will brick your phones if you try to run RUU's and firmware. About the only thing you can do is unlock the SIM and put in a T-Mobile SIM to get 3G but no 4G or LTE. You check this out here.

Sim unlock

Has anyone found a reliable way to sim unlock the sprint version of this phone yet? I been looking into the threads on XDA and google, doesn't seem like theres a way yet?
Also does anyone know if i'd be able to use this phone on gsm carriers in canada after unlocking?
Thanks for future replies!!

So far none of the methods used for m7 and m8 work. Trying to gather info and see. Any old hand willing to lend some help?
I'm confused, I thought this was a global phone and thus I would be able to pop in a sim from another country and have it work automatically? Either that or be able to get an unlock code directly from sprint. Was I wrong by assuming this? : I'm going out of country in two weeks and more than likely am screwed if this is the case D:

Even if you did find a way to simunlock it it wouldn't do you much good as the Sprint M9 lacks the radio frequencies required to work on most other domestic carriers:

Second, the One M9 was not tested, thus is not authorized for domestic GSM/W-CDMA bands. Rabid phone unlockers under the new Sprint domestic unlocking policy, consider yourselves forewarned.

I bought an HTC One M9 that was supposed to be unbranded and unlocked and turned out to be a Sprint locked phone.
The guy who sold it to me was able to get the unlock codes.. but I am outside the US and trying to unlock the phone requests an update (i assume from the carrier).
But as I am outside of the US i have no link to the carrier..
Is there anyway to force the sim unlock so i can enter the code?
When I put in the sim, it says SIMLock enabled contact customer service.
Sim Unlock Sprint HTC One M9 outside the US?!
Trying to sim unlock the Sprint HTC One M9 variant. I've managed to unlock the bootloader and root the device but now I'm stuck with the next step. I live outside the US so Sprint cant help me and the phone hasn't been activated on Sprint. I was hoping i could sim unlock this the same way I did with my M7 but no luck? Help anyone?
Okay, I have a question. I have a Sprint HTC One M9, and I want to go to the T-Mobile store tomorrow and get a T-Mobile SIM for it. I'm not allowed to post a link to the page I'm referencing (under 10 posts), but according to Sprint's page "FAQs about Unlocking Your Sprint Device":
Under the second bold question, where it says "Will Sprint notify me when my device is eligible to be unlocked/has been unlocked?": It says all DSU-capable devices are automatically unlocked. This means that I should be able to go to T-Mobile tomorrow and get the SIM card and just put it in the phone for it to work, correct?
Sorry for the noob question. Definitely appreciate any help.

Nope it's still going to be locked. I bought my phone outright from HTC and spent hours trying to call Sprint (both regular and international support) and get it domestically unlocked, and all they give me is the run around and my MSL. They keep saying the new provider can use the MSL to reprogram the phone to make it work, which I believe is what happens when you flash to a prepaid CDMA carrier, not for GSM.
I kept arguing (with the call center manager) and went over the terms on the Sprint website to no avail. They'll unlock the SIM for international use no problem, but domestically, they will say it's impossible.
I've only heard of 1 other person from the Sprint forums getting the DSU unlock on the M9 and it was a pain for him as well. I pretty much gave up. Not worth the hassle. If you get yours domestically unlocked, please let me know and I may try again.

Cphoneunlcoker.Com! got my phone unlocked for free. Glad I didn't have to pay moneyfor it.

I'm confused, I thought this was a global phone and thus I would be able to pop in a sim from another country and have it work automatically? I'm going out of country in two weeks and more than likely am screwed if this is the case D:

as I know this is international unlock. so when you will arrive to your country you will need just local sim card and it will work well if the phone was unlocked correctly before
