i had it rooted using towelroot before the update, when i use it again after update, it says the phone isnt supported
Chainfire's CF Root?
If you are on NG6, you'll need to downgrade back to NC5 using Surge's Odin Tars. Once back on NC5, you can use Towelroot again. Do yourself a favor at that point and uninstall the SDM application so that your phone no longer trys to update itself automatically.

i tried doing that, but now towelroot says the phone is already rooted when im back to nc5, but SU says it doesnt have the binaries and cant install it
Did you use the No-wipe or the Full-wipe? If you used the No-wipe then that may be the problem. You may need to use the full wipe to make it work.

Ok sorry, so I accepted an OTA update and I of course lost root access. I thought I could go back and attempt to re-root the same way with odin, by flashing clockworkmod.TAR, but it did not work. I even tried a factory reset and attempted re-rooting this same way; and it still wont work. When flashing CWM, it installs successfully, but still wont give me root access. SU, and CWM are still on the phone after a factory reset. How do I get re-rooted access, and can I do it with CWM file, and SU still on the phone?

You need to reroot with CF Root as you probably did originally.
This is done through ODIN.
It sounds like you're just reflashing the CWM recovery

By re-rooting with CF-root, would the fact that SU still being on the phone cause any issues?

Do you really mean that you have safestrap or are you on a "LOKI" rom? Do you have a custom recovery installed? Although I haven't used this, if you are actually using safestrap, then yes, you can use this.

Yes, it's "safe" if you follow the instructions. I have done it.
It will wipe your phone....... Not the SD stuff but everything else it wiped.
You should backup and before doing this with Titanium Backup or ADB.
This will leave you rooted with MK2 still as your bootloader with the ability to ODIN back to MK2 at some point, if need be.
This puts you off the ranch, but ODIN can get you back on the ranch later.
There is currently no other way to have root on KitKat. So if root is important and you want KitKat, this is it.
Now if you don't care about root, go flash the MK2 No-Wipe found on this forum, then take the OTA.
You need to remove SS to do that though.

How'd you try flashing it that led you to here? If you can get into download mode just use the Odin file... Since I don't know exactly what you did you could try mk2but may not work and you may have to Odin NC5.. Little more info will help

I tried to ota update but I get an error. Phone is Custom unlock, was rooted. I unrooted.
I rooted my device by flashing NC5 with Odin, Towelroot, then flashing NG6. I then used Super User and Root Explorer to enter R/W mode, then searched for "Knox", and deleted all results as the guide I was using told me (can post the link shortly). I then rebooted and now my device doesn't boot past the red Verizon screen. How do I get my device up and running again, and how do I remove Knox so that my phone doesn't keep rebooting itself with the new OTA update?
Thanks in advance!

Restore with Odin and flash NC5.
Then,
In the How To Root NG6 Thread, there is a safestrap flushable ng6 stock with out KNOX.

Thanks! I will try it tonight.
Or use Odin and flash the NC6 .tar, then use Titanium Backup or similar and delete the 7 Knox apps. and the com.sec.knox..... file.

I tried flashing both versions again and no luck getting past the Verizon loading screen. What exactly do you mean by "restore with Odin". Forgive me, I'm a noob. Is there a file I have to download to reset my device via Odin? Or is there a process already in Odin?
Thanks
Hi,
My GS4 has the latest version and towelroot. I want to do a clean start and factory reset it. If I go through the factory reset menu, will the root stay afterwards? Do I need to take few extras steps?
Thanks

Flash the full wipe nc5 file in Odin. That will give you a clean start
Hey so I did that but I sitlll have Samsung "Custom" a an unlocked icon showing up when I boot my phone. Is that bad?
It's not bad. But if you used Odin and did the full wipe file, there wouldn't be the custom screen on start up. It would be like getting it from Verizon.

This! I don't know how many times I have flashed via Odin but never, when flashing a stock image, have I had it show the "Custom" logo. Not until I did a few things that is.
So is rooting version s4 similar to that of T-Mobile one where you can just use Odin? I'm on 4.4

If you're on nc5, download towelroot. If you're above nc5, use Odin to downgrade to nc5, then root using towelroot

My S4 was rooted on KitKat and working just fine. I used the Odin App to downgrade, root, and go back to NK1, so no custom recovery.
I should have frozen the update popup but I was going to do the update using Flashfire so I could keep root. in the process of downloading the Rooted Lollipop rom and apparently I accidentally clicked the update button when the popup caught me by surprise. I got the case off and the battery out just as it was booting up to install the update! AH! Is there any way to stop it now? Or am I screwed?
Thanks for the help!
Have you tried an ODIN image? If you've been snooping around recoveries, Safestrap would've been a good option to make a nandroid. Other than that, I'd be out of ideas. AFAIK download mode should be able to be accessed.

Thankyou, I apparently forgot a lot after I researched to root the phone. Yes I got into download mode. I should be able to just take the lollipop rooted rom I was going to use in Flashfire and flash it through ODIN on my PC correct?
you may have to flash nc5 full wipe tar and the pit file in surges thread and then root via towelroot and then flashfire the rooted oc1 rom.
thats what id do.

Just used ODIN to flash the NK1 Kitkat that I was already on, and that got me back to my rooted Kitkat, phew. Now I will flashfire the Rooted OC1 Rom.
Thankyou for the quick replies! I almost messed that up pretty good.
Oh, and just to be safe the first thing I did was freeze the SDM updater. :good:
