Has anyone had the problem that their Galaxy S2 randomly turns itself off when it's in their pocket.
It's happening quite often now, twice today, several times yesterday.
Take the phone out of my pocket and it's got a blackscreen that doesn't respond to being woken.
Holding the power buttons makes it reboot and all is fine again.
At first I thought it was because of the position of the power/wake button being pressed while in my pocket, but I've tried recreating this and it's not easy to do.
I am running Widgetlocker, so not sure if this is causing an issue.
It's an O2 branded phone, not rooted.

I had it happen to me once, the first day I got it, but it hasn't happened since.
The only thing I can think of was that the phone was very very warm in my pocket, so I guessed that it might have overheated.
Yes, I did wonder if it was a heat problem. But it would have been sat there doing nothing so shouldn't have got too hot.

Now that's 3 times today. Within 5 minutes of being in my pocket.
Checked it straight away and it wasn't particularly warm.

Happened to me few times, its not something very wrong with the phone.. What i did and after that I have no such reboots:
opens the back cover, cleaned the battery contact point (electric points) on battery and phone, put it back tightly, closed the back cover so there is not gap (not even a very small gap) between cover and phone..
after this never have reboots even having the phone in my pocket. hope this helps

I've seen this happen on other phones. The original Palm Pre needed a foam spacer in the second hardware rev. Maybe a piece of paper or two between the battery and the cover to make better contact. I'm happy saving 30 grams (and a better phone period) but this does chalk up a point to the Sensation build quality.
It's been okay so far today after cleaning the battery contacts and reseating the battery. But it has spent most of the day sat on my desk at work. So hardly a good test.
any update ? mine turned off again today. :-(
Mine has been doing this randomly as well. Its very annoying.

glad to hear that it's not just me. i really hope that it doesn't turn off in the middle of the night otherwise ...
It's been fine now for the last 3 days after cleaning the battery terminals and refitting the battery.
It looks like the battery was losing connection briefly while in my pocket causing it to turn off.

I also have the same issue. It's really hard to replicate the error and some days it doesn't happen. For some guy in this forum it turned out to be a faulty RAM... I hope this isn't the issue for us too!
A good way to check this is by enabling USB debugging, connecting to a pc and run "adb logcat" in the command console... then you wait for the phone to crash and post the logs here, hoping that someone will spot the error for you.

yup mine does too. some days 4 or 5 times some days not at all.
Have you tried giving the battery contacts and clean.
It might also be worth wedging a bit of paper folded up at the top of the battery to slightly increase the pressure on the terminals.
Mine only ever did it while the phone was in my pocket so a bit difficult connecting by usb.

This seems to be a widget locker problem for me. It opens with the home button even when locked does it not?

Mine happened the last 2 nights, when i wake up I have to switch it on,
I have widget locker.
But i'm gonna uninstall it and see if it resolves it.
I had this going on but in my case I soon figured out that it was overheating from something that I'm guesssing had the phone at 100% although it was idle. Never did figure out what it was as a logcat showed nothing after the fact but that the phone was very hot to the touch if caught just after shutdown. That had been on villian rom which I liked but without being able to see a smoking gun in a logcat and never catching an app or system process running amok I ended up changing roms and the problem was gone. It should be noted that several people have reported doing a system reset and ridding themselves of this problem.
Haven't seen too many others comment about this, but I just thought I would share. After upgrading to a Seidio 1900mAh battery, my Evo 3D has been randomly shutting itself down. When I first got the Evo 3D and was inserting the battery for the first time, I noticed that there was a tiny bit of play after the battery has been placed in the phone. I looked at the contacts for the battery and saw that it *might* be possible, under certain circumstances, for the battery to not make full contact with the terminals. I only had my stock battery for a short time, so I didn't notice the phone power itself off, but that all changed after getting the seidio battery.
What I did to make the battery contact the terminals better was to cut a small strip of rubber band and place that so it stands vertically right below the SD card (it doesn't actually touch the SD card). After I did this, I placed the battery back in and it makes much better contact with the battery terminals and fits more snug, kind of like the OG EVO 4G had So far, I haven't had any random shutdowns since doing this.
i cut a strip out of a business card and put it in at the bottom of the battery(opposite of the sim card) and that has been my fix. i was gonna try and exchange it for the problem, but the dent in my metal surround shows it has been dropped.

I'm not sure if it's an actual defect of the phone or the battery for the phone. If they manufacture the battery about 1 - 2 mm longer in length, I think it would fix the problem completely.

A loose battery connection can cause a lot of glitches,random reboots,slow charging,etc. The second week I had my E3D I noticed the battery was a little loose so I ended up with 2 layers of business card opposite the contacts. The way I see it, it may not help but it sure can't hurt.

I didn't notice that... my e3d charging at very slow rate. now I gotta check my just to make sure i didn't get a defeated one.
I think some of you guys missed that he's not using the stock battery.
After a couple weeks of fixing the loose battery, I can confirm that it does work like a charm. Every week, I would get a handful of random shutdowns which required pulling battery to get the phone back on. With my simple rubber band 'mod' I have only had the phone power down once, and it seems as if I am getting much better battery life as well.

Nope, shouldn't hurt the Evo 3D at all. I would highly recommend switching to a rubber band if possible. It makes the battery fit perfectly without any risk of scratching the inside of the device.
I've got myself two CHICHITEC batteries and with these I have no problems.

A loose or dirty connection is like putting a resistor in the circuit. The voltage goes down and the current goes up. So to me shimming the battery is preferable to a non removable battery and random glitches. Thanks for your concern about scratching,good point, but I could care less what the battery compartment looks like as long as I have a good connection.
I had the same issue with my aftermarket 3500 battery. I ended up cutting a small sliver of business card, placing it on the bottom and left side of the battery and then securing it to the battery itself with electrical tape. This way when I remove the battery to put my stock one back in (which is my daily battery) I don't have to worry about anything.

Sorry to hear about your aftermarket battery It's good that you found a 'fix' for it by making it more snug. How long have you had the 'fix' in place, and have you had any random reboots or shutdowns afterwards?

Yeah I just happened to have a huge bag of rubber bands that I bought like 5 years ago, lol. I probably shouldn't worry about it either, but unfortunately I am OCD about my phone, among other things

i was going to change the phone to end of this proplem .
Long story short, I have a DNA with a cracked digitizer that I picked up for fairly cheap. Battery with SIM in reports on average 76%/hour draw in sleep and 150-250%/hour when using the phone. Doesn't matter if on WIFI with mobile data disabled or not, no excessive app draws that I found nor is it getting hot. So where it gets weird is I turned the phone off with 46% remaining after 18 minutes of use and took out my SIM to put back in my phone, bumped the power button when putting the empty SIM tray back in. Phone booted with 86% battery.... still draining pretty bad but I don't have a full set of stats yet. Battery hosed? or maybe water damage? I don't know where the indicators are on this and I didn't want to go tearing it apart yet since I have buyer protection. It was listed as 100% functional minus the cracked digi.
I know most people will say return it, which at this point it seems I probably will, but I figured someone here may have some insight.

Stock. Did factory reset. Drained the phone all the way down and can't get it show green even after 3 or 4 hours now.
Let's see if we can get this going.

When my phone bricked like this twice (both times from thermal protect shutdown)
I had to pull the battery, wait 30 seconds and reconnect it. I posted a guide awhile back with some pics.

Okay, so i'm the actual user with the TCP brick. I have a screwdriver set, but i don't havea torx bit that small, and honestly i don't really want to take it apart unless it is a MUST. Would letting the battery drain do the same?

I must of lucked out then, my phone was in this state after running benchmarks back to back. I kept plugging and unplugging from wall charger and pressing power button. After many times it finally showed charging animation and eventually booted.

I've heard that it sometimes comes back to life if you leave it alone or get it reasonably cold.
When it happened to me I left it unplugged for 24hrs, and got nothing but the looping LG cycle. Left it plugged in looping for 24hrs and no go.
Left it off the majority of the day before I got tools, got off work, shopped, got home, still cycled, so I figured screw it at that point, and went for the battery pull. Powered up instantly after.
I'm not sure just how long it would take to drain, considering it would be doing nearly nothing in the off state. Then again I've heard of people somehow charging it like that for a few hours and having it work also. Good luck regardless though.

From that, it makes me want to put the damn thing in the freezer lol. But that risks moisture damage. Anyway, do you know what actually causes this to happen? i mean, it was supposed to just be a Build.prop tweak. After every other soft brick, i could let it sit, go into recovery, and just restore from a back-up. But letting go of that, Could i just plug it in, and leave it in download mode for a few day/week whatever until the battery dies? Failing that, how would i recharge my phone afterward?
UPDATE:Checked my screwdriver set, have t4,5,6. If all else fails, ill go for the pull.

Yeah no freezer, you can get it relatively cold just placing it in the stream of cold air from your house or car A/C for 3-5 minutes.
I do not know what causes it to happen, now to be clear, it's the brick where it will not power on at all unless usb is plugged in correct?
Also, I think it actually charges in download/fastboot mode. I may be mistaken though.
The phone should start charging itself afterward with little issue, if you successfully drained it anyway. (again I remember reading a few posts awhile back about people who accidentally ran there phones to 0 battery and ALSO got the weird loop syndrome.) I think it was MysteryEmotionz that mentioned that you could leave it for a few hours in fastboot/download and it would be ok to start charging again.

I'm 15 and my dad would be pissed if i took it apart and didn't know what i was doing lol. Now, saying that, please don't view me as clueless, i am relatively knowledgeable, but iv'e never seen anything like this before, and it' really the first time iv'e gotten a problem i can't fix. Also, it's my first android with a built-in battery, kind of a nuisance. Anyway, i'm going off topic. Thank the community for the help, and i'll you know what happens c:

Just go slow, reaaaaly slow when pulling the back cover off, and be sure NOT to use your finger to pry the battery connector up, so it doesn't come off the board. Also, do find a TORX for the pesky bottom screws, so you don't end up stripping them. Best of luck, you'll be fine.
If you're really hesitant to try, just take it back to where you got it if you have insurance, considering you're wiped at this point..

I have a Torx T-5 that seems to fit perfectly. I may yet pull the battery, i'm just afraid to crack the black glass. I'm usually okay at assembly/disassembly, but this device seems rather more fragile than what i'm used to.

Yeah I was crazy paranoid the first time, just keep working around and shim something under the tabs you do get to pop open.
Second time I did it in like 2 minutes start to finish. I do remember the first time that you can hear the glass as you stress it, it is more flexible than you think but surface area is gonna be key when you start prying. WORST worse case, you break it, and get a cheap replacement on ebay or ignore it outright and get a body glove case for it.
I gave up on using it without a case, the glass is pretty but its way too slick, that phone can slide off of a 1 degree slope I swear.

No kidding, i got the bodyglove case with the pink skin from AT&T store, Because my first lgog cracked from a 3-inch fall. I kid you not, it cracked the upper left corner, touch didn't work at all. Had to get a replacement. Anyway, i think i'll wait until later tonight. I always perform better when im tired; i'm a night person. Anyway, i got ya. Shim the tabs, be wary of the sound of the glass, and DO NOT use your finger for the battery connector. Thank you.

Got the cover off, but the camera sensor came up and won't go back down. Any advice?

Came up how far? I'd have to look at the service manual to check, I believe the camera is connected by a ribbon cable so it might be just a little stubborn. in Picture#4 from my thread you can see the camera came up a little but I don't even remember worrying about it.
Can you post a pic if its really bad?

The only reason it came up so far is because it stuck to the case as it was lifted. But i got it down it was simple, unscrew all the little philips, lift up on the Plastic cover, jimmy the camera and boom. i'm gonna put it back together and let you know what happens.

Sounds good, glad its working again. The only thing that made it do this to me was thermal, and I was purposely overclocked to the wall doing benches at the time. When the option is available, in for example most of houstonn's ROM's / Kernels, I set the thermal throttle to max at 60 degrees in trickster mod, and in my experience, dvhexer's kernels behave really well in regards to automatic throttle based on thermal.
Editing a build prop setting itself should have made zero change until a reboot anyway. Were you crazy undervolted maybe? I'm just curious cause I'm always trying to avoid having to take the phone apart if I don't have to.

Sounds good, glad its working again. The only thing that made it do this to me was thermal, and I was purposely overclocked to the wall doing benches at the time. When the option is available, in for example most of houstonn's ROM's / Kernels, I set the thermal throttle to max at 60 degrees in trickster mod, and in my experience, dvhexer's kernels behave really well in regards to automatic throttle based on thermal.

Nope! Completely fresh install of beanstalk. Well not completely, i did install Gapps and do all the updates via wifi. But first thing i do on new ROM is check out the settings. but as soon as i checked that TCP option, it just bricked! Anyway, I appreciate your help, saved my ass. I think i'll stay away from beanstalk for now. Kernel maybe not supported? Or did i just get unlucky. in any case, thanks. 5star advice sir.

Hi, although I've been reading around the forums for like a year now, this is my first post.
----------Story:
Recently (about a month ago) I started to notice a dark smudge on my phone's display. Its very light and hard to see, but when I notice it (often) its very bothersome. Its like half an inch from the right, right in the middle. I googled about it for a while, and apparently it has to do with the amount of pressure applied to the glass. This was hard to believe to me, because I take care of my phone like if it was a baby.
Anyways, being bummed about it. I move on living. And just in my daily phone use, i decide to take off the battery cover for a reason I can't remember, I did this with the display on, and I noticed that while I was lifting the battery cover, the smudge area of the display started to glow in colors, like when you apply too much pressure on the glass. And this got me curious. I started pressing different parts of the phone, and noticed that the smudge area goes crazy when i press right under the capacitive buttons. And the plastic frame on said area. After this I did bought the story about the display being damaged by too much pressure. Anyways, everything changed just a few minutes ago.
I was trying to free up the most RAM possible, so, looking around on the settings, i got into developer options and accidentally got curious and messed with something that froze the phone. I decide to take out the battery, and I find myself again with the battery sorta.. Sticking out a little, like when you lift the battery to take it off but not completely. This is something I had noticed months ago, maybe last April or May. Well since it really bothered me because the battery just wouldnt go all the way in, i decide to inspect it. And note that i have done that before, the first time i tought that it was normal, the second time i tought that it was the shape of the phone. But today it hit me. Thats not normal! The battery is bigger. Like, right in the middle, the battery has a litte bump on both sides, like when you bake a cake and it grows, well, a bump just like that. But its hard to seem really hard to see. But somehow I could feel it in the hand, and I decided to put it on a flat surface and it is indeed true. The 4 corners don't touch the surface at the same time, not even pushing it down. And I remember it used to back when I bought the phone a year ago.
And that's not all, the worse part is, that I realized that the bump of the battery aligns perfectly with the smudge on the display. So it must be it!! The battery applied pressure from underneath, causing the display to touch the glass. And as i checked around the phone, turns out that the glass is slighly getting detached from the lower area (battery area).
Maybe it wasn't my fault, but I feel so guilty for not noticing earlier. I'm really worried, as I have very poor battery life, and I fear the display getting damaged even further. Oh, and also. I noticed that all the issues I saw on Google about the smudge on the display, are in the middle, half an inch from the bottom just like mine. What if its the same battery problem?

My device is an HTC EVO 3D, (VM), Running CM 10.1 WFTN, and the battery is stock.
I Think You have to go to the Maintenance .. Since Its Not A Software Problem the phone should be taken to a technician .
I Hope They Will solve your problem there & Your Phone Would Work Again . :good:
You should replace the battery before it cause any more problems.
this kind of stuff usually happens then the batteries are overheated or overcharged multiple times. do you leave the phone charging overnight? or maybe using a cover which acts as insulation.

Yes. I have my charger plugged almost 24/7 because of the poor battery life, and I let it overnight all the time. And yeah the phone gets very hot when I use tethering or any graphic intensive game for a long time. (Which is often). I think I overuse this phone.
And the cover is just a Trident Perseus (siliccone).
Anyways, i will replace the battery soon, since i found that with the battery cover removed, the smudge goes away. i assume that the battery being forced in by the back cover, causes the battery to apply pressure to the display from the inside, making it touch the glass which causes the smudge. For now i will use my phone with the back cover a little open on the bottom so the battery doesnt get pressed in. While i get myself some replacement batteries. As soon as i get the battery replacement ill say how it goes. I needed the raplacement anyways. I only get up to 6 hours of battery life, and thats changing the governor to powersave. Which is obviosly not good. I guess the battery just went bad.
silicone covers a bad particularly if you have heavy usage. I would recommend you always remove the cover when you play heavy games or use tethering
thanks for letting me know. i'll remove it when necessary. or maybe ill just get a non-silicone case. hopefully all this will increase the life-span of my next battery.
