I got this idea from over on the X8 forums and thought it would be a good addition over here aswell. Note to the mods, if there's any reason this thread shouldn't be here, then just get rid of it. Not like you need my permission eh?
New Member? Introduce Yourself
Hey everyone. This initiative is to prevent the creation of a new thread each time a new user to our devices wants to create a thread to say they're a new user and then ask a question which has been asked way too many times. So to keep our forum organized please use this thread to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have, but not sure whether to make a new thread or not.
Before anything else please introduce yourself so that we could know you as well. Please take some time also to read the FORUM RULES to avoid any trouble and infractions from our moderators.
Let us warmly and nicely welcome our new members
I'll be checking in here regularly and hopefully some other of our more experienced users of this device will do the same. That way, we can all make you feel welcomed and answer any of those questions you may have.
Enjoy your stay and I look forward to speaking to you all.

Hey all
Firstly thanks for making this thread kidkarter.
I bought my Xperia S last month but to my dismay the phone bricked in two hours. Basically I was updating via pccompanion and a quarter of the way through the installation it stopped. Tried flashing back to GB but could never get past bootloop. Three weeks on and I received the replacement. The phone has it's good and bad but I'm very happy with it...and with the thorough support and development available at XDA! Looking forward to being part of the crew.
Cheers, -Red

Hey Tej. Welcome to these forums
I don't really know that much about unlocking BL or rooting and even though my device is rooted, I flashed a pre-rooted rom onto mine that was specific to my device. As I'm not sure if this is available for your device, I would suggest asking in that thread then say after a couple of days if you haven't received a reply, send the OP a little reminder of your post.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Is there not an unofficial way to get ICS onto the Sola? Or would you rather just do it officially?

Heya Red No problem at all. As I say, I seen it on the X8 forum and thought it would be good over here especially because we have 4 devices all into one section xD
Glad to hear that you've received your replacement I actually manager to brick my SXS within a few hours aswell but mine was just a major noob error by attempting it when I only had 35% battery left. Obviously it ran out mid-update and bricked my device. Luckily it was only a soft brick so I was able to come on here and find a solution to that. That's simply what I love about XDA

Hey guys, I thought I'll introduce myself too, just for the sake of it. It's grown into a quite lengthy post, but anyway, here goes.
As a developer
Some of you may know me from the Desire scene, where I worked (the slacking-around-IRC-doing-random-stuff kind of work) on ICS and then switched to maintaining AOKP. I'm quite new to the Sony scene (excuse my using the word 'scene' here, it's just a short way of saying 'developer community' or something), but I'm learning the quirks and we (KeiranFTW, nickholtus, championswimmer and me) have set up a nice little team with the Big Project being bringing vanilla AOKP / KangXperiaProject to all 2012 devices. While waiting for the development to gain traction (and for FreeXperia to release their sources), I've also worked on a little side project - porting AOSP / AOKP to the Asus TF101, where I learned a bit about the new quirks introduced in JellyBean and forward-porting ICS stuff. Some more words on the Big Project: first we wait for the Xperia P to get an official ICS update. Then the plan is to try and build JellyBean for the P, just to see if we can make it work with ICS blobs and kernel sources. If we run into some issues that can't be solved without support / blobs from Sony, we'll fall back to building ICS. The Xperia P goes first in any case, then we'll investigate ways we can share the code with other U8500 devices, and release ICS based on Xperia P stuff for those.
As a user
I have a total of 3.5 Android devices: the HTC Desire, the Asus TF101, the Xperia S and the Nexus 7 (shipping). I've fallen in love with HTC when the N1/Desire series was released, but the following (Desire HD, Sensation, IncS) series disappointed me multiple times, so I turned away from HTC and switched to Sony. When it comes to tablets, I've had a lot of good experience with ASUS in the past (desktop components, laptops, network equipment and most of their products really), so the TF101 and now the Nexus 7 were an obvious choice. I'm also an AOSP fanboy (and a hater of most vendor skins), and my faith in AOSP has grown way stronger when ICS, and then JB were released. I sincerely hope that in the future vendors will stop skinning Android and just provide the hardware, but for now I just use custom ROMs wherever possible. I'm currently running AOKP on both the Desire and the TF101 and Sony's stock with Trebuchet launcher on the XPS.
As a person
I'm a geek when it comes to mobile technologies, Linux, board games, anime and Japanese culture in general, quality sound / music and smart computer games (i.e. not Call of Duty and friends), in no particular order. I enjoy playing and designing games as a hobby, though I've never released anything as a developer and some of the ideas never went further than pen and paper prototypes. I'll go into a bit more detail on that later. I don't like people who are too lazy to actually use their brain and RTFM / search before asking, especially when it comes to questions that have been answered multiple times, though I often don't mind the general / off topic chit chat in release (i.e. not dev) threads.
Mobile technologies
I'm an Android fanboy in a good sense, though I try to stay open minded when it comes to iOS, WP8, B2G and other competing products. I've been very enthusiastic about Meego, Maemo and the idea of a Qt/Linux based mobile operating system that is largely compatible with desktop Linux and now I'm closely following the Plasma Active project and the Vivaldi/Spark tablet for largely the same reasons, though I think Linux on tablets is not quite there yet.
Linux
I've never really 'fanboyed' Linux in terms of thinking that Linux > any other OS like some people do. But it works the best for my tasks, and I'm looking forward to the large community growth that is going to happen after Windows 8 is released, as it's going to be a change too big for many people, and the big release of Steam that is hopefully to remedy one of people's most common complaints - gaming. I currently run Arch Linux testing / community-testing / kde-unstable / AUR VCS packages, which is about as unstable as Arch can possibly get, but it somehow works for me.
Board games
I don't like TCG's and other 'collecting' games (except for Warhammer, I enjoy playing it even though I don't have an army of my own), I prefer games that are fun to play with friends and don't take a lot of time and rule reading because you can get more people in, especially those who never played it before. My personal favourites are Risk, Munchkin and (since recently) Cards Against Humanity.
Anime
I love good anime (faves: SE: Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Spice and Wolf, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu, Soul Eater, Steins;Gate), know about the existence of Japanese music and don't think jRPGs are long and overcomplicated, which already makes me an otaku for some people, though I don't consider myself one.
Quality sound / music
I don't have any specific genre of music I prefer over the rest, there's a special 'Music that I like' genre which includes music that I like. Most common last.fm tags in my library are metal, anime and post rock, if that matters. I also have a weird sense of 'how stuff should sound' that usually involves good headphones and often doesn't have too much in common to how the original performer intended it to sound. I currently use Sony V6 headphones with the Xperia S, my laptop (ASUS N55, Realtek ALC883) or my old Creative Zen player.
Smart computer games
This includes games that actually make you think about what you're doing or about some other matters that exist outside the game world. This includes many indie games (LIMBO, Braid) and excludes most AAA titles (Call of Duty series). I also enjoy hardcore RPGs with as many choices as possible both in the script and in character development. The upcoming games on my wishlist are Torchlight 2, Borderlands 2 (those are not very 'smart', I know, but the originals were really fun, and sometimes it's all that matters), 0x10c, Dishonored, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (if it's actually developed by Bethesda now) and some other less known projects like Defense Grid. I currently play Skyrim with a bunch of mods, Minecraft with a bunch of friends and re-enjoying Final Fantasy X on my PS2 (which is the only console I own now, and likely the only one I'll own ever).
Whoo, that's been one hell of a long post. Anyway, enjoy and feel free to ask if you have any questions, whether they are dev related or not
P.S. Please, please, don't quote this whole post. If you want to highlight something, remove the rest of the quote.

It's a fun story really. I saw the eight-way lock screen on Virtuous Wossname on a friend's DHD and I wanted to have that on my Desire. So I just went ahead, read the docs and built it from Evervolv's tree. I had some experience with random Linux hacking, so I knew my way around makefiles and git, so I got the code together, built it and thought I'll just throw it out there for anyone who wants it. I did and it all kind of snowballed on me.
I thought I might introduce myself too
My first Android powered phone was a HTC Wildfire, which I couldn't flash anything on till about a month after getting it because of HTC and their stupid S-ON bootloader lock. At the time I had to wait for AlphaRev X (a.k.a Revolutionary as it is called now) so I could "unlock" my bootloader and install a custom recovery. This was back in November 2011, and I didn't even know what a kernel was then, you could say I was a noob back then, except I actually knew what the search function is for.
On this, I flashed CyanogenMod 7, and forgot about it, until ICS source code was released (around November) and I didn't know how to build from source so I started learning, helped port from another phone (Droid Eris) and fixed the touchscreen driver in the kernel to get a half working ROM. Unfortunately the Wildfire didn't have a GPU and so support for it was dropped by CM in ICS and that is probably not a bad idea considering the last HTC release was 2.2.1 (Froyo).
I then bought an Xperia PLAY, and started tinkering with development, created a few ROM's based of the stock Sony OTA's, then a few more kernels. But I still wanted to learn to build AOSP from source.
So, I learned how to compile, and how to fix compilation errors, and all that. Then I waited for FreeXperia to release CM9, and they did. It had a few problems though, they were using kernel sources for Arc S ICS beta not meant for the Play, so deep sleep was broken and so was hardware acceleration. So, I got the newer Sony kernel sources meant for the Play for the ICS beta, and rebased their stuff on top of it, added a few optimisations such as zRam and tweaks, and then released it.
Then, one day I had a personal message from FXP asking me where my kernel sources are so he can track them. We had a short conversation and I started working with Jerpelea and the FXP team. I fixed a few things here and there into CM, but nothing major.
I stopped working with FreeXperia after as I didn't agree with some of the rules set in place by the CM team for people developing on CM (I didn't get told them all, you have to be part of the CM team for that) and so I started to lean to AOKP.
Sony then released the Xperia U, and it didn't pick up much developer interest in these forums, there was no recovery. I wanted to develop for the Xperia U, and with FXP confirming CM support on it, I wanted to bring AOSP/AOKP onto it, so I talked with K900 who maintains HTC Desire in AOKP, and we decided to form a team, me, nickholtus, K900 and championswimmer. It is the AOKP Xperia Project.
Then we made recovery (after several attempts (documentation == null)) for the P, U and Sola.
Then the community helped raise funds so I could get an Xperia U (which is awesome btw)
And, now I am here posting on this thread.
Sorry if my English is bad here, I am not used to writing this much
PS: If you want to contribute to AOKP Xperia Project, look here: https://github.com/AOKPXperia, pull requests are welcomed. If you would like to join the team, show us what you got and what you can do.

I am waiting for it to come on our devices , they are saying that they need some donations so that they can buy 2012 line xperia devices or anyone can help them as far as i know.
So i created a thread on discussion and latest news regarding to it, feel free to share your knowledge
I want it !
I, and I think many other people on XDA, don't need this KitKat modded Sony ROM.
First because I don't like Sony UI (it's personal).
And I read what says the guys who make this project. It's a mad and arrogant guy (see this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53784524&postcount=3).
After, I don't like guys want donations just for them, pretext that they really need to develop.
That's all for me.
Now please don't talk about this ROM just because this team have maked KitKat with Sony UI and apps. Look what there is behind a ROM project before.
Have a good day/night !
I tend to agree with I4G regarding Sony's UI! It's just ugly! ?
i think sola users already have one

This is my personal opinion after all.
Yes, munjeni was little arrogant, everyone have a part of arrogance, but this guy takes people a little too high, as if he was one of the best developer on XDA. As if everyone had something. I do not like it, I could never work with someone like that.
I know many developers on XDA who made many things about our Xperias, except that they did not ask for donations to reward their work, they just leave a donation button like many people here.
At one point, must stop abusing and mocking people.
After that remains my only and personal opinion.
EDIT: About Sony UI >
If you think that munjeni is arrogant you don't know munjeni.

Hi, i understand your point, and you are right because its somme time that i am complaining about stuffs without doing what i shuld realy do (develop)
the problem I and our team have is that our firmware that we created is a real firmware and not a moded rom ( wich is realy dificult to explain and make pepole belive)
many pepole think that our firmware is just a moded and themed rom wich is not real, and what we ask to xda is just to ask somme developers totest and check rom structure and write a post on portal about what Xperia Overlay realy is .
in past when this project started many great devs told that its impossible , but times has changed and pepoe are inconstianely thinkink of moded rom.
we ask for donations yes but only for the project, what that means ? that mans that all donations are used to get devices that we dont have to be able tom make the firmware for them, but also ther is the need to keep the website online creat OTA update posibility (right now we use otaupdatecenter) wich will be depending on us and not third party software that need root, we also want to put the firmwares on our proper server to allow pepole to download and install them without waiting too long and havin many adds with download link like we found on dev host and onther hosting websites
i honestly dont see in how i am arrogant, i am helping pepole via PM when they have problem with rom installation , i responc to questions and take all critics to good use , for me it will be a pleasur to make our firmware for your 2012 line devices, but when we dont have the device is complicated ,
in past we trayed but we got blamed because we wasnt able to make stable builds as we can not test them and ther is too much devices and we are not so many pepole on working on it to it,
its for that reason that i asked to developers who want to join xperia overlay dev team to write us email on [email protected] so we can work with other devs to bring the firmware
right now we are separating the project by 2 part first is creation and features bugfix and all os relaeed stuffs on us (owners)
and second part are indepandent developers who will make the firmware boot for devices with all needed information and code that they need to do it
but we need that pepole know about our works and its dificult when almost everyone think that its impossible , pleas understand us
I personnaly developed since 2010 on xda and had done a lot of open source work, like gingerbread features port to froyo etc.. and put all on github, also was part of freexperia team and worked on cm bringing , then i decided to do somethink that a lot of pepoe was asking, a real and full firmware with everithink working to update theyr xperia headest, now we are close o our objective and we need the support of pepoles ,
i will say he last think about myself , is that when i was working for xperia x10 , one guy here on xda helped me a lot with donations, help etc...
once i got all needed stufs that i was needed to retake the work back and had finiched my personal releated problems i donated 2x more to that guy for his help and support, we are not here to make money but a big project without any revenue is dificult, but we always use the donations we god for developement only, now i am not asking for donations, cause right now our team is searching xperia min of 2011 line, cause we have now the neccessery money to purshace a used phone but its dificult to finde, so when we will finde one we will work on it, so if evn comunity donate to us for 2012 line of xperia devices it will not be so quick to make the firmware as we promised the firmware for 2011 line first
if you have any critics tips, suggestions we are always happe to hear from comunity wich we are part to improve our work and our policy
thank you
cheers

I appreciate your coming all the way here to answer queries and telling us your plans. But don't you think your saying that you will only develop for 2012 devices when you get that device is a little too much. There are many great devs for our devices like the aosx team etc. And development is all about teamwork. If i make a great rom thats bcoz of works of so many good people who enjoy working with others and appreciate the open spirit of Android .
Who will know us is if there are not people who appreciate and continue our work. No one will take away what you did, it's yours, but it's how u handle it will decide how many people know about it.

and i told that we dont need donations right now cause we need to work for 2011 first, i will not develop for 2012 xperia devices only... i will work for them all, cause i am working on the firmware bringing and want to separate the developement in 2 partie,
1st me and my team will work on z2 z3 etc... firmware rewriting,
and the teams or independent developers who want tojoin us will get all needed informations and souce code that they need to make it boot on their devices.
about the source code , i dont like the fact that everyone are blaming me to not share them , they will not do it if they had created it, just because they would have juridical problems with sony mobile, we had somme rules to respect and one importent one is not make xperia overlay source public, wich i personnaly promised to sony mobile,
pleas understand us, we work for xperia, but when source code available all device developers can make it work on theyr devices wich will be a hudge problem,
we are respecting the rules gived by Sony Mobile wich is :
- not share source code
- not build firmware for non sony/ericsson devices
and we are respecting those rules
by the way, even if we release the source code of it in every new android version the firmware change compleatly wich means that we need to do all from scrash, i already gived the way on howto make it, and how we do, ther is no magic
for all developers who want to do what we done its realy simple, decompile the framework packages, compare with AOSP framework package and see the changes that are done, and then rewrite all that into aosp source code by translating from smali languages to java
cheers

Talk about die hard Xperia ui fan, reverse engineering Sony code.
I might as well create a new rom with that skill.

The same page that posted and then deleted an image (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/m4-aqua/general/android-6-marshmallow-m4-t3205768) related to updates to Sony Xperia devices published today (06.10.2015) a list of 14 devices that will receive.
The post is says:
"With the arrival of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, we received many questions about our devices that will be updated, so that's the official list:
[devices]
The dual-SIM models of these devices will also be updated. We are working hard to ensure that this Chege update in as many devices as possible, as fast as we can.
We will release more details about the improvements and new developments that the new version will bring the Xperia devices soon, so keep an eye! "
As we can see in the list, it seems that the update will come first for the dipositivos series Xperia Z, and then M5, C5, M4, C4. I think that more devices will receive this update, this seems to be the first who will receive.
Thanks for reading.
Oh my god... Why do you start a new thread?? And you quote from an existing thread of the same topic...
I dont get it.
Ok its good news but not worth a new thread.. Especially because it will probably take months before we'll get M on the M4

Hello everyone,
I made a petition about our favorite phone to get another update from Sony.
You can sign here
Phone/ROM-related petitions never work. Plus we won't have 100K people signing it - XDA isn't as big as you think, and people outside XDA just don't care or don't even know what's Marshmallow at all.

It never work or never tried.....i think xda is big enough...people will start knowing about marshmallow and regular people also like updates....maybe in a long run Sony will change its mind...who knows....it never hurt to try..does it .

I'm not saying that Sony won't change its mind under certain influences, just that the influence won't be a petition which can only gather merely thousands of votes in months.

Well, companies have their own practices and strategies....merely left behind certain product will sometimes benefits that company for a long time even some owner not happy about it....i think i understand some avid users will do this to get attention...but i also know why big company will not listen...maybe they care, maybe they don't but i think if you want to apply updated program or software to certain device is expensive....to want a profit, they need to do this i think...left the product that users a gradually left behind....
Why is having marshmallow important anyway? Nothing after android 4.3 really impressed me. Every new version is buggy and harder to root and the next version tries to only resolve those bugs and introduces other bugs. But I wish you well with your goal and I hope your petition works.
like I said before in another thread. I love my ultra and how it works on KitKat 4.4.4. the battery last longer and some apps work on KitKat that don't on lollipop. I've been on lollipop 5.0.2 rooted and on 5.1.1 rooted and I didn't like it and went back to KitKat 4.4.4. KitKat work very good with my ultra and i'll stay on it till it quits working or sell it. so I don't care for lollipop and marshmallow
I don´t think enough Ultras were sold to start a petition...

Not according to Sony themselves, but that could change. Don't expect it though.
I though GPE update are handled by google. If nexus 5 is getting Android M, no reason why others s800 phones can't.

Yup, and that's why we have no freakin' idea if it gets M. I sure hope it does, but it's impossible to tell. We'll notice in a week or two though. Cross your fingers!
go to sony official blog. the chance to be heard are bigger there. it's useless making a petition for this kind of issue.
I think, this is pure speculation, GPE has to be joint effort between Sony and Google.. Sony provide the bootloader and kernel and probably recovery too.
Google can then take a bootable platform and build Android on it.

I think another question should be whether xzu owners would be willing to pay, say, $10 for an upgrade. I would.

Sony released the 6.0 binaries earlier this week, which are proprietary Sony drivers which allows ROM developers to get AOSP running on our devices, so maybe they gave those to Google too, so they can port 6.0 to the GPe(?). I don't know. I'm not sure how the GPe program works at that level, so I guess all we can do at this point is to wait and see. (Give it 2-3 weeks)
So does anyone know if GPe version of Z Ultra is getting Marshmallow? I can't find info on this..If they get it, it can be ported to regular XZU as well, right?
So Android P rolled out, and I was wondering, we've been blessed with devs work and got every great update and tons of rom for this device. And was wondering is there by any chance getting Android P based roms in future. Also I was specially wondering about RR, because I like that a rom alot.
Well will we be getting android P, or I shouldn't get my hopes up?
Just wait patiently. The sources are available, just wait until a dev cooks a build for kenzo. Or when proper GSIs will be available.
Sure thing buddy, by any chance you also want VoLTE and 10 hours SOT?
Nobody maintains Kenzo for income, just because they feel like sparing time, for crying out loud it was just formally announced today, so if you want P go ahead and build it on your own.
Just stop this kind of threads, they are just spam.

Sorry, the devs need income and now the devs like @rocknegi have started p**n for ₹50/day or ₹200/month cause the users aren't donating enough money.
If they get enough income from p**n selling, they will develop Android P for you.

I know but just use some sense? We are not devs, we are normal users like you. How do we all users know if a dev can develop Android P. Plus, do you think a dev will announce 'Hey Niggas, I'll develop Android P rom for you all niggas asking for it, wait for few hours:. No?
The dev need to look into the source, need time to see what all bugs needs to be fixed, else users like you will come here and say it's buggy, that doesn't work, this doesn't work right?
Another sensible answer: Android P sources are just released. It's not like magic to develop rom directly from the source. Needs a lot of hack, back port blobs and things we don't even understand.
Summary: it's a redundant question as of now. Please wait, if there's a Android P rom, you will see it here. Till than, enjoy other roms.

As a user of redmi note 3 . i just hope dev make android p for this device.
As one of the lineage 15.1 maker for Redmi Note 3, yep, we will do bringup after 9.0 source code release, and should be easier than Oreo, as Pie impacted a lot of backport comparable, please don't ask lots of annoying OTA, follow XDA rule, P will be coming to Kenzo/Kate after sometimes, but for Treble is more harder as blobs are old, we need to wait hydrogen and suzu devices etc updates for new blobs, for more Treble working, and even CAF for msm8952 board not impacted treble, unlike msm8953 board, so treble now is experimental and don't expect stable treble in a short time.

And for my lineage 15.1 long time no updates because I teams with @Carlos Arriaga, and he is back in July so I and other team members need to do some updates, my 15.1 new build will release soon

Thanks for this reply. Won't be asking for annoying updates, just wanted to know that is all.
Well, speaking of Android Pie development, I've found a Pixel Experience ROM that is based on Android Pie through a Telegram channel
Known broken features:
• Bluetooth
• VoLTE
• Stock camera app, but the camera works for stills and video (Open Camera)

NOTA BENE: Try it at your own risk, as it is not developed by me, but if you want to download it and try it, here's the link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KqyUEdUgtW5coyoTlHuuN0Y2Jt1aKnn-
Yep. I've been using the Pixel Experience 9.0 from @thestrechh as my daily driver for a couple days now.
It's usable if you can get by without VoLTE and Bluetooth.
Gcam works, but can't change the settings and it crashes a lot. Front and back camera stills and video all working.
The rom feels pretty buggy and a bit sluggish to me. CPU operations seem to take an unusually long time. Maybe all the cores are not being utilized optimally. (Don't know. I haven't actually tested.)
I'm sure this rom will continue to get better and better in the coming days. I'm anxious to dirty flash the coming updates.
Excellent work by @thestrechh.

I've not noticed sluggish performance here, but I have noticed bugs here and there, which is par for the course, considering the infantile state of Android Pie development.
Still though, for an early release, it works almost excellently
