[Q] Really slow Play store and YouTube - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I unlocked and rooted my n9 today. But seems like staring with the initial update on first power on that its slow on wifi.
RDP and speed test app are going plenty fast, I get 30mbps down and 20 up.
Downloading a 50MB app takes about 15 minutes and watching YouTube above 360p is impossible.
I cleared cash and data but still no help.
Thanks!

[Q] Youtube on 3g...

I've noticed that I'm never able to play youtube videos while on 3g and was wondering if this was common or the norm. I can watch them without a problem on 4g but I'm unable to get a 4g signal while at work and was curious about this issue.
Do a speed test to see what your download speeds are, if they are to slow then you have your answer. You don't have WiFi you can use?
Well I get around each time tested 672k down and 80k up. Not sure if its the speed as I can go to the youtube website(desktop version) and the videos will play. Its only on the mobile site and app that get the messages that there was a problem when loading. I'm just curious if anyone has had this issue with the app.

Google Play Music downloads pinned tracks very slow

I wanted to start a discussion here where developers can possibly provide insight into this known issue on some devices and Android versions. There is a google product discussion over here https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!msg/mobile/8IapTtKsUsI/393hsmGnbh4J
Basically the music app downloads pinned tracks extremely slow despite fast internet connections. It can take more than an hour to download a 10 track album. I've noticed this when streaming music too, the buffer does not load quickly at all, barely keeping ahead of the playback. I'm running a custom 4.2.2 ROM on an evo 3d and I know that on an ICS ROM in the past I did not have this problem. From the linked discussion above it seems everyone is running JB who has this issue. I've contacted Google support but they have no idea what's going on and suggesting I don't understand how to pin music.
My current theory is it has something to do with the encryption of the music that the google music app does in order for your All Access music to not be transferrable off the device. Possibly with the new way JB organizes SD cards, this has created a rate limiting issue considering the app was originally programmed for ICS when it was birthed.
I can provide logcat if anyone is interested.
I just started my All Access trial and am shocked at how pokey downloads are compared to Spotify. I'm trying to pin perhaps 40 songs from three albums and after a half hour it's only 25 percent done! What are they saving, WAVs?
Seems like certain files (unfortunately seems to be all newer music) download slow whereas other files go fast. Slow songs are all mp3 but all show encoded_library/string=LAME3.98

My uploaded music downloads fast. I am only having trouble with newer play store music that shows a specific encoding. Can you check the encoding on your uploaded music with mediainfo?

I am seeing the same thing. I'm not sure where I can see the encoding of my music.

download Mediainfo. Anyone you don't need to it is a confirmed issue with certain encoded Mp3s if you check the google discussion linked in the OP. Just hope google cares to fix it soon.

yes it could be... but... dont care anymore... stopped using play music cloud after one day... will go back to local mp3 and will subscribe to spotify for the rest
With further investigation, I'm seeing two absolute deal-breaker problems with Play Music All-Access which are inclining me to ditch it:
1. The download speeds are catastrophically slow. When I first set up All Access last week, I added a few albums (about 40 songs) and tacked them to my device. I go to leave about 40 minutes later and was stunned to see it was only a third of the way done downloading. Huh? Spotify downloads like a rocket on my 25 Mbps connection. Later I tried simultaneously downloading the new Daft Punk album on my girlfriend's pokey DSL on Play and Spotify - it finished in about 8 minutes on Spotify, 35 mins on Play.
What prompted me to search for the problem was being back at home and it taking a full hour to download Wings Over America. After it finished on Play, I downloaded it from Spotify and it took TWO MINUTES! 30 times faster! 28 tracks shouldn't require an hour's advance notice. Does Google think its customers won't be in the mood to listen to something on the go? Streaming, you say? I had a song freeze, restart, and refreeze at the same point several times while streaming in a major suburban area with good coverage. Yeah, that doesn't work.
2. My phone was fully charged when I unplugged it to use as an alarm while I napped while Wings was downloading. I wake up and it's down to 90%! Huh? I use GSam Battery Monitor to look for the power sucks and the top culprit is System (*wakelock*) responsible for 19% of overall use with AudioOut_2 holding it awake for 1h 32m, almost the whole time it's been unplugged! Nothing was playing; it was just downloading. Play Music was #2 with 16% used, but no ridiculous wakelocks.
It doesn't matter if All Access is a couple bucks cheaper and has more music than Spotify if it's unusably slow to download and a battery killer.
Nexus 4, rooted, faux123 kernel
It appears that the app update for May 30, 2013 has resolved the problem. After updating, I downloaded a pair of albums - one new and one from 2000 to rule out encoding questions - and they both were down in less than 5 minutes. That's more like it.:good:

Youtube app never fully buffers a video

Hello, recently (like android 4.2) youtube has decided to stop buffering videos whenever it feels like it, which means the video just hangs when it gets there with the little buffer wheel spinning. Sometimes it will continue to load the video after it stops, but most of the time it just locks up the whole app and you have to force close it and re-launch it. I have tried clearing app cache and data and what not, but nothing has helped. I even tried turning off wifi optimization, but that didn't help either. I thought that maybe it was my ISP, but the same videos in the browser play just fine with no buffering at all. It seems to do this regardless of the length of the video. I get about 30mbps down and 5.5up when I run speedtest on my tablet, so I don't think it's the connection that's causing the issue. I should also mention that this happens regardless of quality. It will load relatively quickly to a certain point, then just never buffer again. I fear the only way to resolve this issue will be a factory reset.
This Reddit thread solved my YouTube issues. I have fios, fyi.

Edit: oops this apparently.might be a problem with the new YouTube app.

I get this! All started when I upgraded to android 4.3! Its highly annoying, and the only way. I have found to fix it is to kill the YouTube app, find the video and place you where at, and then go from there
I also had this issue before the YouTube app was recently updated

I'm having the exact same issue! I might get it to play one video and the it buffers constantly. Anybody else have this issue? I'm running stock 4.3 uprooted. YouTube works fine on my s4 and laptop, but hangs on the Nexus 10!

Happens on my moto x too.

Can also confirm on Nexus 10.

My devices:
Nexus 10 - Stock Rooted
Nook Tablet - CM10.1
Same problem here.
You don't have to force close youtube by the way, simply pressing the home button and going back to youtube afterwards does the job for me as well.
I hope they will fix that issue soon
This sucks so bad! I just got this awesome nexus 10 and I literally cat go 5 seconds without buffer. Do I have a bad unit? How do I fix this? I can surf the web just fine so it isn't my wifi to the nexus 10.

Try an app called "Viral' from the playstore. I started using it as it can play YouTube music videos in the background while I'm using some other app. Recently I've been having issues with the default YouTube app and discovered that Viral did not have those issues. It may be worth giving it a try. I'm using a 4.4 custom ROM linked in my signature so your mileage may vary.
The issue I'm having is YouTube stops half way through a video and simply will not continue playing that video from the stop point, even after a reboot. I can play another video but it too stops half way or so in.
The YouTube app isn't NEARLY as good as it should, I'm still enraged and disgusted about the fact that the YouTube app on iPad is so MUCH better than the Android one, it has gestures to let you toggle full screen , it has pull down to refresh on lists (like the pull down to refresh on the gmail app), if you exit the app and come back, the video you were playing doesn't have to be rebuffered again (it keeps a few seconds buffered so you can watch the video quickly) AND worst of all, the iOS app lets YOU choose the resolution of your stream, what you get isn't an HD "on" and "off" toggle, you get proper choosing, like on the website, you get to choose between 240p, 360p, 480p, 720p AND 1080p, HD on our app is 720p, not 1080p, actually Google disabled the option from all android apps.
After that update I lost a lot of faith in Google, no wonder the iPad has so many more high quality apps, if you want devs to take you seriously, then YOU should give proper support to your devices, 1080p streams should have been available ever since our N10 was released, this **** is just unacceptable.
Thanks @3DSammy for the tip about the Viral app. :highfive:
Well, I figured out the issue, but not a fix. I think it's tied to comcast's router. I set up an old linksys with a broadcomm wireless unit as a repeater and I haven't had a single issue since. Numerous router resets and devices restores did nothing. It doesn't make any sense though because it only happens with the YouTube app, but same settings and everything I was able to watch a video completely on my nexus 10 on the repeater that I could not get through on comcast's router/modem(Aaris unit). It's strange though because my repeater connects wirelessly to my comcast router, so it goes nexus 10 to linksys repeater to comcast's router. It could be a security issue I guess, but I didn't look into it.

Online video playback start freezes

I've lately faced a problem that keeps haunting me on a daily basis.
Whenever I startup a Youtube video from the app, or a Twitch stream or even open a video link with MX Player, I hear the audio normally but the picture is freezed or very low fps for the first 4-10 seconds. This literally happens almost every time when I start watching an online video. Usually when I start the video a few times again or skip to like 0:02 it starts normally. Sometimes this happens when I do a longer skip during the video as well.
It's very annoying and it definitely started happening after the OS updates. My OPX has been working brilliantly otherwise for 5 weeks now and the only customised thing in it is the Google Now launcher I've been using since day 2. My mobile internet is a constant 15/5 mbit 3G plan and this happens on a 10/10 mbit WiFi as well.
Anyone else facing similiar problems?
edit: This seems to happen only when YouTube/Twitch starts the video in HD. When I set YT's quality to 480p or lower and start the next video in that quality, the problems seems to go away. Naturally I expect this phone and this 3G internet to start online videos in HD.
make sure you've updated to oxygen os to V 2.1.3 , if you did, make sure the OPX RAM is not fully loaded by closing recent apps, or check the device storage to make sure it's not almost full, if problem still exist try to wipe cache partition through recovery cuz some phones from different careers comes with same problem in playing music or videos but after wiping cache all goes good, if it didn't work with u so it will be strange thing, i have problems with twitch but not the other apps, hope i helped u.

4th Gen 8.9 HDX OS5 steaming app video playback issues.

All, I updated to OS5 a couple of weeks ago and since then I noticed that a few streaming apps seem to not function. I originally noticed the Showtime Anytime app wouldn't stream properly. The audio would play fine but the video would freeze and skip around. I don't use this app often so I figured maybe an app update would come later. Well, yesterday I tried to use WatchESPN and it was doing the same. It is a little different though as I can reboot the device and if I start WatchESPN right away I can watch something, but if I close the app and come back into it, it again does the freezing. Additionally, last night I tried to watch the GOP debate on the Fox News app and it did the same thing as the Showtime app. I did a factory reset to see if maybe something got hosed, but upon reinstalling the apps, I get the same response from the video. Again, the audio is fine. Normally I would think that the App is causing the issue but with multiple apps it looks like maybe a video rendering issue with the OS5? Can someone else test these apps and let me know what you are seeing? All of these apps worked fine before doing the upgrade. Hulu, Netflix, TWC and other apps work fine. Thanks.
