[Q] Best 2014 Verizon phone for unlocked bootloader/S-off - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Curious. I have had an S4 that I had acquired about 6 months ago from avenues that weren't via Verizon. I work for a small company that is perfectly ok with me "messing" with my phone as long as if I break it I pay to replace it. That being said my s4 has been running safestrap for longer than I can stand and I have an upgrade available.
I'm curious what the best Verizon option is for being able to run CM and customer kernels? Is this something of the past now for verizon?
Open to all Brands. I would particularly like to stay away from Samsung. (Personal preference)
Hoping someone recently went through the same thing and is interested in helping someone who is stuck with Verizon.
Thank you in advance

I did your homework for you, and if you're only interested in recent flagship phones (no older than a year or so), the best option is the HTC One M8. A good amount of ROMs and kernels available. The 2013 Moto X also seems to have a lot that work on the Verizon version. Presumably the Moto X 2014 and maybe the Droid Turbo might as well sometime, but they're both new and nothing's really going on yet.
Of course, there's the Nexus 6 coming in a few days...

[Q] 4th Eris gone bad - what should my next phone be?

I am on my 4th replacement Eris (trackball issues, and charging port issues). It's mint, and I take good care of it, so it's not that I am abusing it by any means, but my charging/usb port is on its way out. I've had to exchange 2 others because of the well known trackball issues.
So, Verizon has offered me early upgrade pricing on any phone of my choice! Question is, which one is closest to my Eris (size) and feel. When the Eris came out, I admit, I liked the way it looked, and felt compare to the Droid 1.
Of course, I rooted it, since there is no way I could stand being stuck on 2.1, with Sense. I really want the Nexus S, but I'm on Verizon, and not able to move (company phone). I would prefer the most "google" experience, but if it's an HTC phone with Sense, I can live. I'll probably just root it anyway. So, here are my requirements:
* FAST!! (After having an Eris for so long, I yearn for speed!!)
* Most Vanilla Google like
* "smaller" form factor like the Eris
* Good dev community for rooting (like the Eris)
Actually, now that I think of it, my requirement for being Vanilla, is not really a requirement, since I can always root it
Here are some of the phones I have thought about:
* DINC (but, should I go for something even faster, or wait?)
* Samsung Facinate
* Droid 2 Global (don't really like the form factor, but 1.2Ghz is nice!!)
I don't really think there is much choice. Although I am a diehard Mac OS X guy (Mostly because it's Unix), the iPhone just doesn't do it for me anymore. I like Android widgets, and the notifications too much, and the iPhone sucks at those (or doesn't have it)
Any chance of the Nexus S coming to Verizon? I like that the Nexus phones are always on the bleeding edge of Android releases, which is what I really want the most
So, what does everyone recommend? Wait? Get a new phone now? Replace the Eris for the 5th time?
Can you wait out for the vzw Thunderbolt?
Personally I would get another Eris and wait for the new phones to come out. BTW next time, post questions like this in the Q&A or General sections.

J/K...I'd wait for the new LTE phones to come out before getting one. They just leaked that the LTE pricing will be the same 29.99 for unlimited.
dinc is too old now. almost at the end of its life and so is the droid x. Samsung has horrible support as you can see by kaos having to go over to their forums to help them get froyo and its near the end of its life. Most of the fast phones that verizon has have a EOL in march. The d2g is the same processor as the x and d2 but overclocked. i had a x for 29 days and hated it. and that thing ran all day at 1.35. If you can handle the 4.3" screen wait for the thunderbolt. My experience with the x and looking at the rest of verizons going ons has made me realize i am leaving them. I have determined that its time to move to a mobile carrier that has similar views that i do in how handsets should be ran. That is why i am switching to tmobile and getting the G2. Tmobile is owned by a german company and for some reason the Europeans seem to be more accepting of all things unix. They have a good relationship with google and they have released 4 vanilla pure android phones. no one else has released any that i can think of.
I would get the DINC but only if you can without having to use your upgrade.
Currently on my 7th one, nd verizon has yet to offer me this. Just get the iphone, much more reliable

track ball going out, screen unresponsive, phone restarting randomly... i'm about to be on my third.
The build quality was very uneven on the Eris. Most of the ones people are getting now have already failed in the past and will fail again. If you're on your first one like I am (over 12 months now) count yourself lucky and just ride it out. Unless things change I'll be changing carriers after this contract is up as it is anyway.
Do the verizon trade in credit thing. Eris is worth 132 to verizon. Then buy some used phone online (I recently got a mint droid for 130, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much faster it is over the eris and has a great dev community and super easy to root and is still supported by verizon. For now) and wait till the thunderbolt, bionic, x 2, droid 3, or the Inc 2 comes out and get that and use your promo pricing

Replace it with another Eris; then wait for the Thunderbolt (SVDO) or the Droid Bonic - or jump ship like me and just get an iPhone. *shrug* /2c
I only read your first post and haven't read anyone else's answers. IMHO, Either go for the Incredible or wait for the next HTC Android phone on Verizon, the Incredible's successor, whatever it will be. Shouldn't be too much longer, but I understand it's hard to be patient.

Hows RAZR's development future looking so far?

I'm trying to decided between the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid 4.
I'm assuming Droid4 and RAZR will have the same exact hardware and therefore be pretty much interchangeable ROM wise. Is this correct?
If that is the case I'm heavily leaning toward the Droid 4 but it depends on 2 things.
1. With the "removable back", the battery being accessible without removing glued on case components(just screws)
2. The developer support for the RAZR/Droid4 being sizable despite the locked bootloader.
Thoughts?
The developer support is still growing and I think we will be satisfied in the end. But is not a nexus though.
There are some things happening already, for example someone have been able too boot ICS.
Also the bootloader will be unlocked when Moto releases ICS.

No, I'm sorry didn't think of Veri.
Moto said that they would unlock the bootloader if the operator is okay with it. So it's up to Verizon, and what I have heard they probably won't allow it.

After doing some brief research on this, I read that the unlock tool that is released with the ICS update abroad will "probably" allow developers to unlock the Verizon RAZR. Is this actually likely?

Likely? Probably not, but it might be possible for a dev to reverse engineer or figure it out...
Lots of IFs, but with Safestrap out now and devs working on roms, after we get FXZ or SBF, we will have a great device with lots of options for ROMs.
1. IIRC, the Droid 4 will also lack a removable battery.
2. ICS might not be released until May or June. By then the Razr will be an "old" phone, so it might not really take off with developers if it does not build momentum in the next 2-3 months while it is still "new."
-but from the looks of it the development of the Razr seems to be really starting to take off.
3. In terms of user base, the one thing that really helped the Razr was the 1 cent Amazon Wireless deal. It was the top phone available on Verizon at the time, so I'm sure that built a good base of users- but maybe not the type of users who develop ROMs.

The Droid 4, there is some question as to whether the phone will have a removable battery or not.
The test units were not sent with the case removal tool that was seen on the spec sheet that was released today.
I haven't seen a new confirmation on the removable battery yet, and Motorola never confirmed anything on this front.

That is of course IF - and this is a big IF, the Razr's bootloader gets unlocked before that. And judging by what I have seen, it doesn't take that long if the phone is a flagship phone... Correct me if I am wrong

The boatloader won't get unlocked. You'll see a workaround, like a 2nd-init, or something along those lines, but Verizon won't allow unlocked boatloaders, and Motorola is going to comply with Verizon's desire to keep the boatloader in lockdown.
That won't stop development, and ASOP ROM's which is what Droid Th3ory is working on, an ASOP ICS port.
mhhh but the Atrix have unlocked bootloader, why only that moto have that luck?
Atrix is on at&t. The carrier designates whether the boatloader stays locked or not. It isn't moto's decision.

Very good question. Why don't you ask them? It would be interesting to hear their reply.
Well it looks like dev on this phone is dead!
I mean they have already released ICS 4.0.2 for the vzw GN and we ain't got **** yet!!
Looks like I'm going to have give this phone the wifey and go get me a GN.
Don't get me wrong I love the phone but no dev spt is a bummer!
...What are you talking about. The Nexus shipped with ICS in the first place, of course it got it before we did. And it got 4.0.2 update 2 hours later straight from Google. That has nothing to do with Dev support.
And naturally, since it's a Nexus device, it's gonna get ages more dev support than any other phone. But we are getting places ourselves. DroidTh3ory released RAZRX two days ago. He's working on ICS right now. We got Safestrap 2 days ago. Once we get the FXZ files we're probably going to get like 200x the support we're getting right now. Not to mention the Nexus' hardware which is composed of fantastic innards, but a plastic, easy-to-chip case, normal glass screen with minimal scratch resistance, & a weak radio.
It boggles me how you can say dev support is dead with all of the stuff that's LITERALLY happened in the past two days.

I posted this somewhere else, there's really 2 reasons for this:
1) Google required that the Nexus come "open".
2) In the agreement to carry the phone, essentially Samsung & Google have taken over support for the phone, to the point where the contract, while through Verizon, is actually supported by Google, and therefore they can dictate the bootloader.
That's what I could gather from reading up on how the Nexus came to be a Verizon phone. There were some pretty heavy negotiations here, and Verizon didn't want Sprint to get the phone, and couldn't stand to have another Iphone/Att&t exclusive situation happen again.
Now, for Moto, they are already heavily tied to Verizon, and so they have no leverage for getting their devices to be released as open.
They even were first (I believe) to start saying they wanted open phones, back when the xoom was released. They made a statement that by late 2011 they were going to release all their phones with unlocked bootloaders like the xoom was......that didn't happen because Verizon threatened to pull the phones if they did that.
Verizon even forced HTC to remove it's bootloader unlock tool on the web, if I'm not mistaken.
So it's really not Moto's fault, it's Verizon's, and the Nexus is going to be the way it is because Google has control, not Verizon.
yeah except the nexus ships locked and is unlockable through adb.

So what you're saying is we'll get a ICS Rom from developers long before any Verizon update to ICS.....right? Because waiting till June is absurd! This phone is just too friggin good to not get some attention......is my opin,anyway....

Upcoming End of Life for the DNA?

Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?
There have been rumors of a "DNA 2," that's about all anyone knows.

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

It would be a shame if Verizon does this but I would think they would start those corney commercials showing the phone as 99.00 down with 2year agreement or something like that - today is my last day to return I think, so I have a lot to consider

Signed with the blood of my DNA
I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

Wow. I wonder if that means LATER this summer like August or sooner....?
I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

Releasing so late after the other carriers is kind of a stupid move, but honestly if you have vzw and want the one, you're stuck waiting anyways. Or get the gs7 or whatever that Sammy brings out a month after that.

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.

Lol....yeah. Personally I'm all about AOSP, so I can't complain, but it is annoying how long the US carriers always take. As far as AOSP goes, most of the ROMs I've tried are definitely stable enough for the things I use my phone for so I just live with the occasional oddities. Eclipse is an awesome choice though for a stock/AOSP hybrid of sorts. I just hope VZW doesn't jack with anything in the update that makes downgrading impossible or the like, because then all of a sudden the forum will be a mess with people who couldn't just wait the couple extra days for someone to release a "safe" version of the update....then all of a sudden the forums will be a mess with noobs all being like:
"Please help I know people said not to but I upgraded anyway and I now I can't be 1337 h4x0rz and haz root and phone is broken and won't boot!!!1 How to fix??"
Lol....but I digress

Lollipop OTA coming at the end of the January

Or the first week of February. Maybe something that doesn't matter to a lot of us who already jumped onto the leaked Lollipop build I have to offer.
I know I haven't seen many of the users who posted here before because Verizon surely did rip us. Yesterday I've spent quite some time looking at the Droid Turbo 2, LG V10, Moto X Pure, and the Note 4/5 at Best Buy. Snappier UI experience, amazing cameras, and surely they all got the best support of today. I would only jump ship knowing if I could get all of those + waterproofing on Verizon and that's that.
I only hold thread on my phone definitely for most of those features on an Xperia that was a flagship of 2014. And there's also that contract too. If the bootloader was ever unlocked, I'm pretty sure our two developers on the phone could do much more. For the time being, I do try my best in enjoying the Z3v with what's in this showcasing attachment.
Pretty soon...
The factory version would need to have additional features that I *would* use before I go back to OTA. My phone is stable and I am happy.

I don't know what it is with 5.0.2 but my experience with it compared to 4.4.4 has been awful. I haven't experienced as many app/phone crashes, freezes or instances of chrome running out of RAM for things like uploading a picture with rooted KK (if any) as I have with LP. It's so unstable for me.
Quite literally the only thing it has going for me is the Material design and even that I could work without if I let myself get used to Holo again. I'm hoping if VZW ever does come out with a more finalized build for its OTA that it doesn't crap all over itself like this build is on my phone.

With all this extra time they are taking and considering it is a stage fought patched internal release people have been testing it already is 1 step ahead of the other sony lollipop releases unless they are on 5.1.1 now. That's what verizon should be releasing to us. My HTC m8 was and still is stuck on 5.0.1 and that's a rough update

I took the chance with chatting with a Verizon representative and I was surprised he gave me an exact date for it. May be true or not, but it's something neat to tell others just in case.

You can tell the difference for sure just by opening the Recents menu on KK and LP. It opens up without lag on KK, but you can see a slight delay on LP.

Who knows, maybe? I wonder if someone questioned Sony whether or not they released an updated rom or patch for the Z3v against Stagefright.

I'm still on stock kitkat awaiting a final ota.. but with this delay there has to be a change from the internal release? How often are internal releases the final build for a ota update? What are the chances of marshmallow that sony is releasing for all their devices?

There's almost no chance at all Marshmallow is coming to our device. It's really sad to say even though we are the bridge between the Z2 and Z3, but we're locked within Verizon's boundaries.

Was the verizon rep a friend or was it a random you spoke with over phone? Do you think it's reliable info?

It's someone random, but that doesn't necessarily determine if it's reliable or unreliable. It's already one year after the promised date range of when the Z3v was supposed to get the official Lollipop rom. Whatever comes now is just a worthwhile announcement. If we get it, we get it. If we don't, then oh well.
Oh man not another ota thread! No one believes these any more. Aren't you the one that said there was going to be one in November?

Maybe I did say it, or didn't. It could have been a lot of other people saying it as well. I just want to share hope far the antics go with what Verizon knows for what they think the OTA release dates are.
Even thinking the Z5 coming to Verizon was almost too good to be true, but I would like to have a nice upgrade to another flagship waterproof phone.
Be careful what you wish for with Sony devices. The Z2 I had with AT&T and Z3V on Verizon were solid devices, but the Z3 and Z3+ I've tried with T-Mobile both had reception issues. i.e. in fringe areas they would have no signal at all while other devices would have signal. I don't know what Sony has done with their newer devices but it really hasn't been an improvement.
Even my wife's Note 5 gets better reception than the Z3/Z3+

I can't help myself, it's just my nature. :good:
I have not seen any hint of an OTA for our phones and I do keep watching for one, I think another forum member said he has a inside tipster who will let them know if there is to be an update OTA coming.
Well I just called Verizon to see if they would give me information that is in any way similar to what you received. The tech told me that they are focusing on updates for their HTCs LGS and Samsungs. He said that even though we can activate Advanced calling on our accounts the phone still needs the 5.0 update to actually use it. I asked him for a time frame. He said that the manufacturer hasn't sent them the update yet and then when I told him the manufacturer saidit was to be out by the end of 2015 and that competitors already have updates for their phones he kind of glazed over it.
So the time frame he gave me was possibly around spring break or during the summer in which he also said that sony is working on a new phone which would be coming around by then on Verizon and that they might be waiting to make the new phone before they push that update. So the false hope can be put to rest. The lead OTA would probably be our only option for a while and he said that they might not have released an update because they are still fixing bugs. And for the tech to try to relate he said that he is still waiting on an update for his samsung galaxy note 4 for Advanced calling.
