Get lg g3? - Verizon LG G3

I'm due for an upgrade and I like the lg g3 because of the screen size and smallish body. And also its rootbale. But if you could upgrade right now would you choose the g3 again or maybe the droid turbo or note 4 or nexus 6? I have a rooted note 2 right now and love the screen size and the stuff I can customize on it. I hear good things about the g3 other than battery doesn't last to long. What are your thoughts?

Well MY LG G3 has a fantastic battery and I am not rooted...I compare it to the Droid RAZR MAXX with a 3300 ma/h it's replacing. I have had the G3 for 8 days. That said...I do not stream video or play tunes. Yesterday, when I had 44 minutes of screen time and the phone off charge for 10 hours I was at 84%. I am good with that!
There is nothing wrong EXCEPT the bottom microphone. It is positioned on the bottom left when you face the phone and better positioned for those that hold the phone to their Right ear not the left. Regardless it still does not have the best pickup when compared to even much older phones. I am unsure if it's a software or hardware issue. I think hardware as I exchanged my first G3 after 5 days for this reason. The replacement is no better. Lots written on the internet about this problem. For me, as a right ear talker, holding the phone lower so the palm 'cups' allows my voice to rebound into the mic.
Other than the above it is a kick butt phone. The camera is excellent as in no LAG. Many users key on megapixels. I key on LAG the Turbo is bad laggy!
The major customization I use is Nova Launcher Prime. You must install Nova Launcher first: NOVA Launcher. I believe this reduces any UI phone lag people talk about. My G3 is smooth and fast! You do lose the knock-knock off on the screen but by double tapping the status bar the phone shuts off and by using Nova Prime and it's gestures and the Screen off app Screen Off you have the same function.
I went to two different Verizon stores and talked to more than 4 agents as I upgraded then exchanged. Everyone said that the G3 was best of its size and class. For me that was Turbo, Droid MAXX, Galaxy S5 and Xperia Zv3
Verizon gives you a 14 day $35 exchange period.

Wouldn't even have to think about it. The Droid Turbo, and Note 4 have locked bootloaders, that will probably never be unlocked, and the Nexus 6, doesn't have a memory card slot, or a removable battery. LG G3, FTW! BTW, I find battery life to be perfectly acceptable, with this phone. It lasts me all day.

As long as it can last from 630am to maybe 11pm with about 3.5 hours screen time I'd be happy. I really would love to have a phone that can be rooted still but I've never had an android phone that wasn't rooted so I don't k know if it would bother me or not

It would bother the crap out of me. I suppose, once they start locking down all phones, for good, I'll have to switch to a Nexus. That is, if Verizon continues to carry Nexus devices. Can't give up my unlimited data.

Yep, Stump app, to root, and you can use Terminal Emulator to "Bump" TWRP. Check out the development sections.

Yup. It can be done with stump root and flashify to load your recovery. 2 apps - 10minutes - rooted and bootloader unlocked. You'll be really happy with a G3

Yes, you can use Flashify, instead of ADB commands. Also, be aware, if your phone comes with the 11C build, you'll have to roll it back to the 10B build, beforehand.

yes, if you are on 10b. since they will activate and do all the crap you may have the updated 11c. no worries. just flash back to 10b and stump and bump and install the rom of your choice or just stick with stock and freeze apps. I'm currently running jasmine3.0 which is the 11c updated onto the stock rom with all vzw apps frozen. I like this phone so much I wish I could buy a backup incase I lose or drop it cause I'm sure I'll be happy with it for the next 2 or 3 years. I'm afraid they might come blocked with a newer updated firmaware where we can't stump and especially bump it.

How do you go back to 10b?

To get back to v10b, you read threads here on XDA until you understand one of the clearly explained methods and use that. .kdz or .tot flashing is what you are looking for. Kdz is easier.

Return for next Nexus?

So coming from the Verizon gnex I miss the openness of doing whatever I wanted with the phone. And while I do love this phone, I'm contemplating returning it at the end of my 14 days in order to wait and see what the next Nexus is like. I know people are doubting it's coming to Verizon, but I would rather have that option open to me if it does come to big red. Anyone else is this same boat?

Are you talking about the fact that the bootloader is still locked?
It hasn't even been a week yet, and the phone isn't even out on all carriers.
I have faith that the device will be modded soon. Just hang in there.
(Also, if the FCC documents prove accurate, Verizon is not going to carry the next Nexus.)

I also came from the Galaxy Nexus and miss the open architecture of the G2... but after rooting it and making a few minor changes I'm liking the G2 more and more.
I suspect the bootloader issue will be resolved soon and then we'll be able to load Cyanogenmod or other ROM's on the G2. Then we'll have the fastest phone with the best screen on the market.
I'd suggest you root now and load a root keeper to block any potential OTA that will further complicate the bootloader issue.
unless android 4.4 is set up to completely change battery life and how the phones will work with battery... I do not think the 2300 mah battery will compare to the 3000. So to me G2 will be a better bet, I guess that depends on the person

Actually Ive read of and experienced better battery life on 4.3 (on my Gnex), so its possible 4.4 might be better still.
If the bootloader gets unlocked on the G2, I can only imagine how fast the phone will run with something like Vanir or Commotio.
And I dont think VZW will ever get another "pure Google" phone, especially if the lockdown they did on the S4 is any indication.
I would never buy a nexus from verizon or at&t, or any big carrier lol.

I would hope this not be a rumor and just a fact. The playstore should be the first to sell the next nexus before any carrier. Thats where I purchased my previous ones.

If i were to purchase this device (very close to deciding this way), how do i do a "root keeper"? I saw on here how to root the device but never heard of this "root keeper" thing? Sorry still new to this whole android scene coming from iphone 4 and now running HTC One X+, my first ever android device and loving it! Just don't see how other companies can top this device any time soon and not at all impressed nor need this new HTC Blink Feed crap that they will push on all new/upcoming HTC devices that probably still won't be as amazing as this device in the next 6 months. Thanks!
The new Nexus, when it passed through the FCC, didn't carry the bands necessary to operate on Verizon's network. That is to say, Verizon won't have it.
I'm sure the next Nexus will be great, and I considered holding off on a purchase until it launched. However, in the end, I opted for hardware once again over software, and the G2 has all the bells and whistles in the hardware department. The Nexus is a fantastic option though if you favor software and being completely free to customize your experience.

There's an app call "OTA root keeper" and works quite well in keeping root after an OTA. Worked on my Asus tablet and my samsung note 2. Have not tried it on my samsung s4 though as I haven't gotten any OTA yet.

If worse comes to worse and after doing the above the app doesn't work, can i just still do the same root procedure after the OTA? Thanks!

Ya but make sure when you open the app you do a "protect root" first before doing the OTA. After OTA open the app again and do a "restore root". Thats it. In some cases you may need to reboot again after restore root.

Not this year but next Fall is a real possibility when Verizon is planning on introducing 4g-only phones late next year. Once VoLTE turns on and CDMA exits the scene, all you need is band 4 and 13 compatibility in the next LTE/GSM Nexus.

Thats a good point, software can only take you so far in the long run anyways.
I am still stuck in this conundrum, keep the G2 with the real possibility that it may never get AOSP but stay on unlimited on Verizon's network, or return it and wait for the Nexus 5 and switch to T-Mobile unlimited with worse coverage, or Aio with better coverage but 8mbps speed limit and 7GB/month data limit. Decisions, decisions.
EDIT: Well, I just talked to a guy at work who said T-Mobile's network around here sucks so that's out. Now it's stay on VZW with G2, stay on VZW with GS4 Developers Edition for my flashing addiction and AOSP or go to AT&T or one of the many MVNOs who use their network and get the Nexus 5, not an easy choice.
Id definitely keep this. The Nexus 5 wont be coming to VZW, but it seems like it'll be the same hardware as the G2. So yeah stick with us. I as well am completely expecting a BL unlock soon.

After I fully charged the battery, I rooted..... well technically I came here, read about what version of the S4 I had... got disappointed/sad that I couldn't unlock it (coming from a GNex) but I read and educated myself on how to root, and upgrade and keep root.. Then I used Xposed framework to modify the hell out of it... and while it sucks that I can't flash any ROMs.. most the features that I cared about when I flashed ROMs on the GNex, can/is modifiable using various modules on Xposed.
TLDR - Immediately.

Yes. I used my upgrade discount to buy my S4 off Amazon. It shipped with MI1. I used Root De La Vega to root, and then used this guide to update from MI1 to MJ7 and kept root.
The Xposed module I use the most is 'Wanam' (2.2.2) however I also use 'Bootmanager' to control what boots, 'Maximize Widgets' to have DashClock be my lockscreen, 'Xposed Recent Tasks RAM' because I like looking at memory usage (and bars) and 'Xuimod' to enable the BatteryBar Mod... once again back to my love of bars.

Yeah it's the baseband. For what I know (anyone, please correct me) there is no going backwards on basebands. If your S4 is already on MJ7, you can't go back to MI1. However, if I was in the situation you're describing, I would probably use this thread to root and then install Xposed and go to town.
That being said, I don't know if that guide is working.. I know there was controversy over the root method on MJ7 since (once again from my knowledge) the method had you installing a SuperSu app that was Chinese based and was "calling" home. XDA closed a lot of threads discussing that root process and since I didn't need to know about it, I honestly haven't read what was going on with that so... this is where my help will probably end.
WHATEVER you do.. just be sure to read all instructions of any thread, try to understand to the best of your ability what you're doing, or at least the concept of what you're doing, and as every thread says... your phone warranty will be so gone and dead it will become next years Halloween mascot, so use all info you gain with the idea that you can destroy your phone's software (I've never had it happen but gotta say it.)

Is there a root method for Verizon One Max on 4.4.2?

Yesterday I updated my Verizon HTC One Max to 4.4.2 via OTA update. Is it possible to root this phone on that firmware? I am asking because I'm reading conflicting information on root only available for 4.3 devices but then I have seen people selling 4.4.2 rooted on eBay. Please someone guide me. Thanks in advance!
Also I am interested in ROOT only. I don't want to flash any custom roms or anything. Thanks.
Did you try towelroot?
Try a program called sunshine. It will get you on the right track. It does cost $25, but it works.
Thats the way I had to go sunshine 25.00 I tried everything else and nothing worked for me but that program for the OTA sense 6
I'm going to be in the same boat tomorrow. Finally putting my rezound to rest and getting a one max and keeping my verizon unlimited. Looking to root, debloat, and wifi tether.
Assuming the phone I'm going to look at will be updated to the latest... if this program works and is easy for $25 bucks... sweet. I have modified mogul, incredible, thunderbolt, and rezound without paying much besides donating or puying a few pro versions of apps. Mainly just rooted and flashed debloated stock roms. Nothing heavy.

Likewise, just bought a VZW OneMax off Swappa and will be here on Thursday. I don't mind supporting developers who create quality apps/ROMS for us. Well worth it!
So...I haven't tried anything yet. Just got the phone and did a factory reset. Its 4.4.2 sense 6.0 3.09.605.2 (verizon obviously)
I'm really just looking for a stock rooted rom, that is debloated, or that I can erase a bunch of dumb apps myself. Then just need to add wifi tether.
I have messed with these things before but the last time was when i got the incredible, tbolt, and rezound on their launch days... so its been awhile. haha

Is this what I am to expect???

2. install twrp

I always used "wifi tether for root users" on the rezound and tbolt. I know it was finicky with the order that you checked all of the different settings. Once you figured out the order and things to check, it works flawlessly. I'm not picky though and will use whatever tether app that works...

It's expected. Verizon is the Apple of android now. Locking and blocking so they can find ways to make even more $ from subscribers. Its shameful, but it's business. They have maybe the best service and until people start dropping them they can pretty much do what they want.
Just hang in there and hope that someone finds a way to downgrade so you can get root and twrp back. I believe @autoprime is looking into it in another thread. That's a good thing. :good: Be mad at Verizon still, but be patient too.

It may still be possible to revert to v10b from the OTA'd v10c, which would solve our problems with this OTA, but anyone who has not flashed v10c OTA yet should avoid it best as possible until there is better clear information about reverting.
Remember when Google first updated the Chromecast firmware and that patched the only known exploit for it ? It took a while to get around that. I think the Chromcast Devs eventually did, though...I quit following and just stayed stock.
How about instead of being furious with Verizon, you point the blame at yourself. You're the one who was stupid enough to take an OTA, despite common knowledge being that OTAs will patch exploits and have been known to prevent rolling back to older versions.
Not to pile on, but I am really surprised by the number of folks that have eagerly taken the OTA. As with just about any SW update, it's usually best to let someone else be the guinea pig. Not to say I'm not sympathetic. Still, at least your not on a Samsung. I spent the last year on my GS3 stuck in the past usually running TW 4.1.2, but at least I was free!
I had an issue, took the ota, and couldnt fix through TWRP. Flashed back to 10B stock, then took the ota, and now Stump wont work. I would imagine that if you used to .tot, and LG fladh tool, and go back to 10B, that all will be right with the world again.... At least, thats how Samsungs are, now that Stump wont work with 11C. I took it simply for the improvements, already had a camera shortcut on the lock screen

You cannot go revert back with a Samsung anymore. With release of knox on the S4 the first update after the MDK bootloader locked anyone out of reverting back. I'm fairly sure every Samsung bootloader after that on other devices worked the same way.

It looks like you cannot revert to v10b via .tot, either. Still might be a way, but things seem rather bleak about that.
What is bad for us all is that developers, already annoyed at Verizon and LG both, for good reasons, are likely see there very few Verizon LG G3 users that are ever going to be able to benefit from their work left. So, they will give hacking the Verizon G3 up as not worthwhile, maybe, and we will be stuck with a stock-only device. Its a problem to consider.

GS3 got Knox at 4.4 and couldn't be rolled back as I recall (might even have been when 4.3 released). As bad as that was for the unfortunate folks that took the OTA or had to do a warranty exchange, the worst part was that it fractured the development into two camps, and that seemed to expedite the winding down of dev support for that device. I really hope that isn't what happens to the G3.
FYI- I just saw this post from @autoprime basically suggesting evidence of anti-rollback code in the new BL. Not a shocker, as VZW has been employing that for a while now - at least on Moto and Samsung devices. Sigh...

Yep... First they locked down the S4...and a short time later the S3 got the Knox bootloader essentially locking everyone who updated into using TW. Safestrap helped many but AOSP was no longer an option for them. It really sucked for development on my S4 as you need to know if a room was for mdk or for Safestrap.
I'd hate to see that happen here to the G3...BUT i will not give up a custom recovery just to get the latest update.... Even if the development community never is able to get a working updated rom.

Isn't this a fix?

Someone on that thread found a way to get root and twrp back after the OTA. :good:

Reverted back to 10B, ran Stump, setup SU to Survival Mode and took OTA. I just did it and I still have root and 11C.

as im writing this, im readying my ultrabook to do the same. Sorry, my Samsung knowledge refers to my Fascinate/Nexus days, when the world made sense lol
I was pretty tempted to take the update. But coming from experience with Motorola, I knew better. I checked the forums first before taking it.
Not to lecture, but any time you root it's best to use the free app Uninstall Expert and freeze any potential updates. It saves a lot of heartache.
Surely this will get patched it's just going to take some time...
I hope this doesn't sound evil but I am kinda hoping this root debacle increases the value of my g3. I've been wanting to sell it but am waiting for root confirmation on the Droid turbo...

I was pretty pumped about the droid Turbo too, but the initial feedback in the forums is that it has some issues. No simultaneous voice and data either. Just makes me feel that much better about the G3!

I'm using a droid turbo right now because I broke my g3 screen. Can't stand this p.o.s. Excited for my g3 replacement device. I'll have it 2m and I'll be back to normal.
BTW, screen and digitizer are one in the same on the g3. Crack your screen and touchscreen no longer works. Just FYI
Verizon Moto Droid Turbo... No simultaneous voice and data? What year is it again?

Hotspot Hack

Hi. I'm considering to purchase the V30. I usually root all my phones so its a bit disappointing I won't be able to do so on this phone (at least for now). However, I'm wondering is there's a way to have hotspot hack without root?? Thanks and sorry if it's already been discussed...

He's asking for a way to enable hotspot on the phone without the carrier giving permission/charging more money for using your mobile data as you please.
All custom ROMs have that feature enabled.
I'm going to go with no on this one. If it was found to work the carrier would shut it down in a heartbeat.

Yup. TMobile has found a way to shut down every Android one after the sensation.

Well, with root and custom ROMs you'll have it.

Hello,
In short.. Hotspot works with no root.
Please read through the post below starting at post # 16..
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-g6/help/activated-sprint-ls993-mind-testing-t3598048/page2
This method worked for my LG-G5,G6 and V30+.. Keep in mind read your carries trems and conditions.. doing this hotspot hack can in some cases get you booted out of your contract .
Also i ,we, them are not responsible for any side effect , problems this method might, might not cause you or your device,
I haven't had the need in a couple years but I use to use pdanet to hide my teher usage on tmobile. Doesn't work for with tether but worked like a charm in USB mode (never tried bluetooth)
Edit: I think its free to try and the key was a couple of bucks years ago
Edit 2: and yes it works (or did last I needed it) without root

Unless somebody figured something out, TMobile found a way to detect that since the Nexus 6 days.

On Moto Quark with custom ROMs, I'm pretty sure T-Mobile customers have hot spot. I haven't heard any complaints.
I know I have it on AT&T. I also KNOW the custom ROM hotspot works on Verizon unlimited because many, many people have commented on it.
Quark (Droid Turbo XT1254, U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250, Moto Turbo XT1225, Moto Maxx XT1225) was the "reasonable" sized Moto Nexus 6 (Shamu). Not official NEXUS but same manufacturer, 90% same specs, bigger battery.
This is from June 2017. He's using T-mobile Hot Spot on two different ROMs and saying one is FASTER than the other. But they both work.

@bhb27 so I did run the same download from same location using 2 separate phone. Phone A is droid turbo with RR and phone B is Droid turbo with CF stock (custom ROM). Downloading same app on tablet first with using phone A hotspot took 6 minutes to download. Switched to phone B hotspot and it took 30 seconds to download. Switched back to phone A hotspot and again, 6 minutes download. Went back to phone B and again 30 seconds. Went to download mumble .exe file from website and same results. There is clearly something with RR. I am going to try clean install with latest update.
Did clean install on the phone. Latest rev, latest kernel, latest gapps. Still ridiculously slow hotspot speed when using this phone.
Just as added info. Mind you both phones are operating exactly the same only difference is ROM. I am using droid turbo on T-Mobile network. But I set up APN and everything so it works and other phone is setup exactly same except CF made a T-Mobile variant whatever that is. Could whatever he did be making the hotspot work better using the T-Mobile line than RR? Time to go and install everything again

Most carriers include hotspot in the US. They just limit it because people abuse it if they don't.
PDA.net does work fine, but you can't use the wifi option - Nougat killed it and they said they wouldn't be working to update it. You're stuck using USB tethering which is fine if you only want to use it for a laptop or something. But otherwise, you're kind of stuck, waiting for a ROM to come out.
