[Q] Soft bricked S3 can only boot into download - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I've been flashing different roms lately on my sgs3 international with no problems until today. I tried to flash a particular rom using TWRP which failed. I restored a nandroid backup with no problems, and wondered if the flashing fail was because TWRP needed updating, so i downloaded the latest version and flashed it via Odin, which seemed to go ok, until the phone tried to reboot and got stuck at the 'Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-1300' screen, and wouldn't get any further. I tried a few more times to boot it but it was a no-go. I removed the battery and left it out for an hour or two and retried, nothing. I downloaded CWM recovery, with the intention of replacing TWRP, but Odin refuses to see the .tar file, no matter where I put it. It still sees the new TWRP.tar file though. I downloaded a stock Sammy rom, Odin wont see it. Ive tried Odin versions 1.85 and 3.09, but no-go.
I've scoured XDA, and the net for hours, but it all stops with Odin not seeing any .tar files. I'm all out of ideas guys. Can somebody please help me with this?
Many thanks, Dave

Try running Odin in administrator mode and placing .tar file on your desktop and delete the twrp file first so Odin definitely can't see it.

Apart from the trouble you are having with Odin you say you tried to boot it a few more times but failed. Did you mean it failed to boot into a rom or boot into twrp or both.

Trouble is, I can only launch Odin directly from the rar file I downloaded for some reason. It doesn't want to install itself, or give me a shortcut to be able to run it as admin.

Also, I have deleted the TWRP file, but it didn't make any diffrence. (wasn't in admin admittedly).
Off to bed now. Thanks for taking the time to help, hopefully You, or someone else will have solved it by tomorrow

That why its not working you need to extract it from the rar file with 7z or similar unzip program

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I've been out all day.
But, and don't think I'm arguing here, how come it saw the TWRP .tar file, and let me flash it? I've always had to launch Odin in this way, and it's never let me down before. That being said, I will try and manage a permanent install, and hope it does the trick, thanks.

So, this is what I did. Don't ask me why, it was more an act of desperation than anything else, was unpack the CWM onto my desktop and lo and behold, Odin started to play and recognised the unpacked .md5 file, how weird is that? I've read in the past, about folk who have mistakingly unpacked the .rar file, and then Odin not doing its thing, but never the other way round!
Ok, so good news, right? Err, nope, 'cos even after I managed to flash CWM, the phone still wouldn't boot!
Soooooo....remember the stock sammy rom I mentioned? Well, I did the same thing with that ie. unpacked the .rar and flashed the .md5 file, and, long story short, it went in, albeit after what seemed like a very long writing process. So here I am with a working phone again, although I realise now that it was a Vodaphone file, and my phone is unrooted, but, hey, it's working .
All I have to do now is re-root it, and flash a rom of my choice.....what could possibly go wrong? (cue maniacal laughter)

Glad to see you got it working but it's not weird at all you could have saved yourself alot of trouble by saying in your first post that your files where originally in .rar format. It is normal procedure to unpack .rar files for them to work in programs and especially for them to work in Odin so that it can recognize them.

Ahh, ok . But I've always just directed Odin to the .rar file, and never had this problem before. Oh well, you live and learn, eh?

[Q] Have I really bricked my S3 (EU) using HEIMDALL?

Hello all,
I'm hoping someone can advise me with the following problem. I bought a unlocked S3 in Belgium (no branding, network locks etc), and the other day I noticed the latest firmware I9300XXBLFB on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
As I use OSX I found out that I needed to use Heimdall to flash it.
I download the ROM, unzipped it, then I renamed the tar.md5 to .tar extracted that which gave me the following files:
boot.img
cache.img
hidden.img
modem.bin
recovery.img
system.img
Now the problem began with the PIT... I required one, and stupidly went off to google in search of an S3 .pit file.... which I found
So I selected the .pit, added the files to their relevant partition, and flashed....
Upon rebooting the phone had updated, however there was no factory reset, everything I had previously was there (to my surprise), but the system info showed the correct rom, baseband, blah blah.
Yesterday I noticed I could not access any internet services. Say I open GMail app, and tried to open a mail, it closed the app after a number of seconds (without displaying the mail contents btw).... no error, just back to the main screen.
I also had problems using 3G or WiFi... nether was stable.
So I reflashed yesterday evening.. at which point I found out how to read in my own .pit file off the phone... but of course I've flashed someone else's previously. I did an MD5 sum on the one I extracted off my phone, and also on the one I downloaded off the net and they still matched.
Still I had the same problems, so I thought perhaps I should drop down a ROM version.
I grabbed a zip file with I9300XXALF2_I9300OXAALF2_I9300XXLF2_HOME.tar.md5 and proceeded to flash it.
Now the phone won't fully boot, it just sits in the Samsung animation and the blue LED pulsing.
I'm guessing I've stuffed up the PIT... the big question is now, what the hell should I do.
FYI I can still get to recovery mode and Odin mode.
Any help / advice would be really appreciated guys.
All the best and thanks in a advance
PS: I just this minute reflashed using Heimdall the I9300XXBLFB. Now it boots up, on first boot it said Updating Android optimsing applications 1/65 and proceeded thru to the point it asks me which language I want... this normal??

UNZIP THE DOWNLOADED ROM ONCE FROM .RAR TO .TAR/MD5 FILE. AND PUT THE SINGLE .TAR FILE IN PDA SECTION IN ODIN AND FLASH IT. Really, start to read before you do anything
the instructions don;t mention requiring a pit, also, why remane .tar.md5 to .tar when the instructions say "Click PDA and select *.tar.md5". seeing as you can still connect with odin, you onlt have a soft brick and you can still use odin and flash something properly.

Erm, think you need to read first... I said I use Heimdall because I'm on OSX.

Once again, I'm using Heimdall not Odin. I'm on OSX not Windows.
Secondly the tar.md5 file is a tar file containing all the components that make the ROM.

Oke, my bad. I don`t use heimdal so can`t help you.
Go to recovery (power on with pressing VOL-UP + HOME + POWER when the phone is off) and do a factory reset / wipe data.
This wasn't caused by using a .PIT, though: never use a .PIT ever again, never ever.

Its really easy to fix your problem via Odin....
U can use usb jig to unbrick ur phone, and in the future, use odin for all the flashing on ur s3..

Stupid reply USB Jig does not unbrick a phone .
ODIN how can the OP use Odin and why would you think its better than Heimdall ??? .

OK the phone is running, but it's bizarre ...
Basically I'm connected to my WiFi signal, and Chrome works 100%... but the normal browser does'nt... just hangs, then closes.
GMail if I open it I can see all the mails, if I click on one, it just sits there with the circle going round, then closes, although if I scrolll thru all mails it does load more... very strange.
Seems any default apps that where installed have connection issues... It's really pi**ing me off....
Anyone?
BTW: *#1234# reports:
AP: I9300XXBLFB
CP: I93000XXLFB
CSC: I9300OXABLFB
It doesn't matter if you change .tar.md5 to .tar i always do it to.
What was the name of the pit you flashed?
Hi,
I downloaded GalaxyS3RootMac which contained a file called
s3pit.pit
MD5 (s3pit.pit) = c67ccbe3628793a9f0dba761c15e0896
Thats the one I used ... stupidly ... so I guess I overwrote mine own one...
I had this exact same thing with browser. That was caused eather from wrong csc or that I mistakenly flashed the firmware using phone field in odin and not pda. Try to change your csc to something else using *#272*IMEI#. That wipes the phone.
Tried what you recommend but still same problem
I choose BTC btw
It previously was on KOR

People read the damn topic before posting.
Usb jig is for accessing download mode, which he can do just fine without.
The phone is softbricked, not soft-hardbricked.
I've never used Heimdall but afaik it has caused issues in the past.
Is anyone you know using Windows or can you install Windows as Bootcamp on your Mac?
If so, please try again with Odin, but factoryreset your phone before and after.
Please also confirm you're actually on hardware i9300 or i9300T, not e.g. i9308

Hi, well you're completely correct I could go bootcamp although I prefer not to. If all else fails I'll do it that way. Sadly today I can't get my hands on a Windows system to use.
The phone is a Benelux model I believe (bought from Mobistar), under that battery it says i9300 from what I remember.
Cheers for the logical response
I got exactly the same problem as the OP with the S3, a Macbook Air on Lion, and Heimdall yesterday. I was frustrated but ended up trying Odin on a Windows 7 virtual machine to re-flash a stock firmware. It went through perfectly and I was saved.

[Q] Finally making progress...but now what...Telus T959P Fascinate

Hey peeps
Ok I've been at this for two straight days now in order to try and unbrick this Telus Fascinate SGH-T959P
My buddy initially attempted to flash it with something and really messed it up to the point that even the battery wouldn't charge.
I don't even care if I get it to stock.. an amazing Rom/Kernel combo will also work.
So this is where I am today... and I have spent the last two days non-stop trying to fix this thing...I have been through sooo many forums posts and websites my brain is about to cook.
Software I am using
Odin v1.7 and v1.83.. I try to use the newest one.. just in case.
ADB / SDK installed and am able to push files across to the sdcard in my phone... everything seems good in that dept
Files that have got me to where I am today
T959TLJL3 Froyo original firmware (apparently)... but can not flash all of the files from the package ..zimage and a few others just fail to flash
s1_odin_20100512.pit file (Have atlas_v2.2.pit also but haven't had as much success with it)
SGH-T959-Stock_plus_voodoo_CwM_2.3.4v2
su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed
I can successfully boot the phone into download mode every single time using the volume up and down while plugging in the usb cable
Also if i just hit the power button I get a Telus 4G / Samsung splash screen and then the phone boots into CwM Voodoo Recovery v3.0.2.8x (Orange??)
In the CwM recovery mode, I can now finally mount all partitions and it looks like things will flash.
Now that I've finally got this phone to this point, I don't want to mess it up.
I want to make sure I have the right files to complete this little project.
Need some direction from the pros.. Am I able to flash a custom rom now ? And if so, what one is best to use.
From this point how can I revert to stock? Do I have the right files ? And how since Odin fails to flash the ones I have.
I figured going to stock first was easier, then use Kies to update it.
Show me the way
Thanks.
jROC
Wow... I got it .. Finally... After I figure out exactly what I used for files.. I will let you know.
All I can tell you right now is that I was flashing a single files at a time then powering down and coming back into download mode to flash the next file.
Right now the phone is all booted up and Running Android v2.3.3 (GB LKG2) and even tho the phone is actually a T959P.. the boot screen shows up as a T959D. Interesting.

No single file that I downloaded was able to flash the phone.
I ended up flashing individual files... and kinda had to mix and match, but was able to get the phone booting back into Android OS
However the phone was missing the EFS folder with IMEI info and such..
Still was not able to recover it 100%.
Message me with your email and I will try to send what I used.

To do it, get this file.
https://gofile.io/?c=tJd0Pd
Then get odin v1.85
https://gofile.io/?c=WHkZHO
Launch odin with admin powers (sudo/su for linux, or whatever).
Then click PDA and select the tar.md5 file and start.
Hopefully it soft bricked not hard bricked.

[Q] GT-P7510 won't boot - internal SD Card possibly wiped

I recently bought a SGT 10.1 GT-P7510 on Craigslist. The tab was rooted and running the inFamous ROM 1.9.1 from AOKP. Worked great for a few days. One day, I turned it on and the wifi wouldn't turn on. At all. I'm brand new to Android, so after reading through forums and mucking about a bit, I tried a few things and ended up doing a factory reset. No dice. The wifi still wouldn't turn on. I gave it to a friend who's more experienced.
I got it back and now the OS won't boot at all. Upon startup, it just shows the Galaxy Tab 10.1 logo. When I hold the power to turn it off, it turns back on after about 3 seconds. I can still boot into Recovery and Download mode. Attached are some pictures of what I found in recovery mode:
Essentially, it looks like the internal sd card got formatted and wiped clean. There's nothing in that directory (or any other directory, for that matter). I'm thinking the tablet is completely empty, save some form of BIOS. Also, I can mount everything EXCEPT the SD card. That option doesn't change when selected
Is there anyway I can get any kind of OS back on here? I don't care if it's the original Honeycomb that came with it or the inFamous rom that was on there when I bought it. I'm just wondering if it can be salvaged or if it's bricked beyond belief.
I'm on a Mac running OS X 10.7, so I can't use Odin. I've tried my hand at Heimdall, but I can't find any firmware that'll load properly (keep getting an error message that the .tar file is the wrong size). Can anyone help me get this thing running again? It would be very much appreciated.

That's where to get the factory firmware
I have never had much luck with Heimdall. I have used Odin with pretty decent success.
Thanks so much for all your help. Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble with Heimdall. Whenever I try to load the firmware package, an error pops up saying "firmware.xml is missing from package." I'm guessing that this firmware isn't Heimdall friendly, or vice-versa. Any advice on how to circumvent this error?

Here is the link I meant to give ya... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348392 .. If the answer to heimdall errors isn't in there.. I have no idea... Set up a VM and use Odin..
Update:
I could never get Heimdall to read the .tar file and could need figure where to put what where. I guess I'm using a different version or am not tech savvy enough to understand what/how I'm doing wrong (which is a high possibility). I took it to my parents and loaded Odin using windows 7. Got the PIT file from a forum here and used the link to download stock firmware for 4.0.4. Ran Odin and it worked like a charm! My tab is running Samsung's stock 4.0.4 seamlessly, and my wifi is once again working. So much trouble over a small radio, but it is integral to the entire point and function of any tablet.
Thanks to everyone that sen in advice! I'm loading Virtualbox on my Mac tomorrow and using an extra key for Windows from my folks. Next step: rooting, setting up CW recovery, and booting Infamous AOKP 4.2!

[Q] TWRP loop, unable to restore or flash anything

I've searched the forums and haven't found a solution to my problem. I have rooted S4 MK2 and wanted to put Gummy ROM on it, only finding out after I had installed TWRP that this wouldn't be possible. No big deal, but now, I can't get away from the stupid downloading screen for TWRP. No longer do I get the screen before it warning about tinkering with your operating system, and once it's stuck on the screen, getting the phone to boot properly sometimes takes a while, and a lot of foul language. I've tried several things to bypass/delete/overwrite TWRP, to no avail. ODIN doesn't work for me, tried several versions, ROM Manager and CWM doesn't work, when I try to boot into CWM mode it goes to downloading screen of TWRP. I finally gave up, decided to nuke it from space and do a factory reset... which took me straight to the damnedable downloading screen! This tells me I will probably be unable to update or use any ASOP ROMs that I might run into, because once on the downloading screen, nothing works, the phone isn't recognized by my computer, two different versions of ODIN failed to get its attention, unable to to load .pit or .tar files... I'm at wits end folks, and haven't found a solution in any other threads on xda, or the net in general, any help and suggestions would be much appreciated. I've not used ADB before, but if need be, I'll learn if there's a fix going that route.

Does Odin "see" your phone? If so, what build are you trying to install?
I know the damage is done, but a little reading before hand would have let you know that with MK2 you can't install a custom recovery. Only Safestrap works with compatible Touchwiz 4.3 Roms
Edit: Maybe this thread will help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578209
Edit #2: My apologies. Just re-read your post and I see you said, more than once, that Odin isn't seeing your phone. I'm afraid I won't be any help. Good luck.
Odin sees the phone, but fails at all attempts to install anything. .pit, .tar etc. I originally wanted to install Gummy but now I know that won't ever work, then I just tried to install stock .tar file and it also fails.

If you had taken 5 minutes of time to research...you wouldn't have bricked your phone...Countless threads on this very thing.

What exactly are you trying to install with Odin?
no bricking, just, let's say a small pebble.

My most recent attempt was SCH-I545.pit, didn't work... I also tried Philz_Touch, gummy, and one other ROM which, of course didn't work, now I know why the roms didn't, but no sure why the .pit file won't work. All I really want to do now is remove all traces of TWRP. My phone isn't bricked, totally usable, it just won't be able to be updated or customized until I get rid of TWRP

It looks to me like your only option is to Odin back to stock MK2. Did you check out the link I gave you in my first post?

I'm reading over it now, considering doing the full wipe. Now that I know custom ROMS are going to be limited to ASOP I don't mind going stock and unrooted. I really appreciate your help

If you get it straightened out I would recommend reading this thread after. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2606501
Let me know how you make out. Good luck.
From reading this I think you're confusing TWRP with Odin. TWRP doesnt have a downloading screen, but Odin does and thats exactly the screen you want to be on to flash a stock Odin tar. You will need to flash a full stock tar. And if you respond saying it didnt work please include the Odin error log.

You making sure you have the proper USB drivers as well as a good USB cable?
Also like surge said its kind of confusing I think you're confusing Odin with twrp as well at times.
So now your trying to load which file from within Odin???

Got everything working, I'm all stock and all systems are go. Thank you very much for your kind help. I'm going to now patiently wait for the official 4.4 update to arrive and otherwise leave my phone stock.

No TWRP

Hi, Would like some help or information if possible. I have a rooted Note 3 (N9005) and had TWRP on it for about a year, then i tried downloading a new rom it says i need to have a newer TWRP. But when i try to download TWRP (any version) on Odin 3. It dowloads to the phone as i can see the blue line going along at the bottom, it then reboots to my rom and i can use the old rom alright but when i go into recovery it says in red writing Could not do normal boot-Odin mode. And i have to go back onto Odin and download TWRP again and my old rom is back again. 1: How do i delete TWRP altogether and start again ( if i can ). 2: If i cant delete TWRP how do i go about putting a new rom onboard. I have searched your forums and can not see any with same problem with a Note 3. I still have root access and have tried Rootify with no luck.
Newer TWRP and rom are probably based on newer firmware. I'd back up everything, Odin the newest firmware then reinstall TWRP and flash new rom. This way you'll have the newer bootloader and modem.

hi es0tericcha0s I downloaded the latest firmware from xda website, and Odin doesn't recognize it. So i downloaded another one and it still doesn`t recognize it. How do i get it to recognize them? i need MD5 or Tar or smd files
I wouldn't know without knowing what you downloaded. Often the .tar or .tar.md5 files that you download here are zipped to conserve space. Most likely just have to unzip it.

Yes thats how it came. Do i unzip it and what files do i extract?
Not trying to be mean, but if you don't know how to unzip a file, this stuff might be a bit over your head.

Your`e not being mean but i did look into the folder and it had 3 files in it a META-INF, qaraqumus and system folder
Then you have a rom and not the firmware.

It's not uncommon that you would need to boot to recovery and perform a factory reset after the flash. And it will take awhile to reboot afterwards.
