Android OS battery drain - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having this android OS battery drain for quite some time now. Hopped many roms and kernels still no avail.
BBS only showed multipdp as the culprit even if I've been on wifi since I unplugged my phone from charging.
Any suggestions to get rid of this battery drain?

Replace your battery, if it is the same on multiple roms then it isn't the firmware.
You've also got a few apps that run all the time, keeping the phone awake.

Also you need to do a better analysis of betterbatterystats and posting screenshots like those are not useful.

Excessive battery drain !

hey guys
I am having a lot of problem with custom ROMs. please help.
Every custom ROM i install, after the very first charge cycle the ROM lasts extremely good for one full day with my complete usage as well. but as soon as the second charge cycle is finished it doesn't even last 4 hours whether i use or not.
I install only the regular apps and hardly 5-6 of them.
please post your valuable advises and suggestions.
would help
thank you
You need to recalibrate your battery dude.
Let your battery die.
Then with your phone off charge to 100%.
Then remove battery for 5 minutes to reset fuel gauge chip.
Replace battery, turn on phone and enjoy

still the same problem
but when on stock ROM, the battery runs all good.
That's because battery 'recalibration' (at least these batteries) is voodoo nonsense
It sounds like a process(es) is causing wakelocks which is causing excessive drain when the phone is idling (from what you've described).
Get BetterBatteryStats from Google Play, then read the BBS thread on here (search for it; if you can't find it, you can access it from within the app from memory). That should give you some clues to help you track down what's causing the drain. If you're still stuck, you should be able to post stats/screenshots to the BBS thread & I'm sure people who post there regularly should be able to help you.
I disagree with your statement about battery calibration being nonsense.
Do some research into the battery gauge chip in the S2 dude, resetting it definitely works
You're right though it could definitely be wake locks too

I used to have a similar behavior. I bought BBS and found that viber was having many wakes, uninstalled it and things were better. Google services sometimes also drains battery, deactivate wifi and data and verify if battery drain continues.

Maybe you are right. ill look into it
You can try GSam Battery Monitor:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5nc2FtbGFicy5iYm0iXQ..
It is easier to find an application that consumes juice in GSam BM than in BBS. BBS is very good but more difficult. I think your problem is beeing made by bad application that sucks energy.
You can also try CPU Spy to get known if your device goes into deep sleep mode.
Try turning of location services. It will help but there must be something else too. Did you try CPU spy which shows how much time your phone is in deep sleep when not in use?

[Q] Concerned about battery drain and RAM Usage

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can help. I have a stock S3 running 4.1.1 and for a while its been running great, but the past few days the battery drain has been quite fast and the RAM usage seems to be high.
In the past my battery would be very good but this morning it had drained 10% in about an hour with me only checking a few web pages via wifi (wifi was constantly on. And I have noticed that my RAM usage for the past 48 hours has been around 600-700mb when previously it was between 400-500mb.
I have used all the usual battery saving tips since I got the phone, sync off, location off, haptic off etc. I have uninstalled apps that were installed in the past few days but doesnt seem to have helped. This morning I have disabled S-Voice but not had any time to see if it has helped and RAM usage seems the same.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Also was wondering if apps like GSam batt monitor and advanced task killer/manager are worth using or whether they will just add to the battery and RAM drain.
Many Thanks in advance
Don't use google now. Sorted out my battery life

Google Now is already disabled. Just wondering if it's worth restoring to factory to see if that helps?

Then id say try use betterbatterystats to see what's keeping your phone awake.
Might be some rogue app going crazy

[Q] Battery usage / Google services drain

Hello, I have a question regarding my battery usage.
I tried leaving the phone with very little usage and see how long would it last. So far, it's been about 40 hours of mostly idle usage and the battery is at 13%.
Is this what others are getting?
Possibly alarming, about 80% of my battery usage is by Google services. Is it bugged or is it actually using so much battery?
Additionally, I'm using cm10.1 with syriah kernel. I manage my startup programs to avoid most of the bloat and I haven't tried bbs yet, unless this is abnormal.
Will attach images in a moment.

Seems normal to me. I'll try to explain why.
First of all your phone has been on for almost two days which is good battery life.
Second of all when your phone is in an idle state the only things or almost only things being used by your phone is google services. Nothing else is being used.
Which means that although google services use the lionshare of your battery, it's completely logical.
Screen uses 0%
Apps use 0%
Bluetooth uses 0%
Try for example to leave your screen on until the battery dies, then you'll see:
screen 90%
and the remaining 10% divided by the rest of the things running on your phone.
So if nothing besides google services is running on your phone, then it's only logical that's what using your battery.
Hope that this sounds logical to you.

Android OS using up too much battery.

Is there anyway to reduce the amount of battery the Android OS uses? It is currently using 61% of my battery, which is quite a bit much. On my previous phone, the Android OS would only use about 10%. Are there any solutions to fix this? On my other phone I shut off the "Back Up My Data" setting and it solved it, but on this phone, it doesn't help. Any help is much appreciated
Have you tried the fast dormancy disable app in the apps section?
I don't even know what that is Lol Is that pre-installed on the phone?
Look in themes and apps in these forums there's a thread. Install the app disable fast dormancy
Isn't there a way to naturally stop it? I mean, the Androis OS shouldn't be using that much battery. it must be something in the setting, right?

It's a BUG.
This fixes it for most people.
Android OS has always been/will be high on this phone with ICS. It's really old news.

This worked well and lowered my OS from the 70% range to 40%-50% range. Still sucks to have it so high.

my wife's is around 30% and her standby time is obnoxiously good. 48+ hrs between charges
There were some funky reporting bugs in ICS on the SGS2... they didn't really hurt battery life though, there. Are you seeing fairly decent life, or not? Can you, for instance, get 18 hours off charger with 3 hours combined screen on/calls? If so it's probably just reporting errors.
I was seeing high numbers like that on stock ICS on the LGOG, but was also getting zero deep sleep. I just went to JB to fix both that bug and fast dormancy problems... not sure if those 2 were related or not, but got them both gone.

I'm not seeing bad battery life. The phone will go 20-30 hours on the battery. I just know that the OS isn't supposed to be that high on the battery usage, so I was just wondering if maybe I'm not getting the battery life I could be getting. Maybe it is just a reporting bug.
That is a well known reporting error with ICS. Android OS isn't really using that percentage of battery.

Today I woke up and the battery was at 26% after unplugging it at around 11:30 pm. I usually wake up with around 93%. The Android OS had used up 91% of the battery for whatever reason -.- I finally installed that fast dormancy thing. Hopefully it helps.
When the phone has higher than normal OS %, it's because of wakelocks that is preventing your phone from going into Deep Sleep State (CPU). Install Better Battery Stats to see if what is keeping your phone away under Partial wakelocks and/or Kernel wakelocks and also what other alarms might be affecting your phone. You can also use the same app to see how much time your phone is at each CPU State.
Yeah. If your phone is draining by 70% over night that's a bigger problem than just Android OS
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
When I was on stock 4.1, I was using around 15-20% overnight then I flashed CM stable 10, happily saw the overnight usage drop to 3-6%, then I flashed to CM 10.1 M and now losing 11-16% overnight. Running "deep sleep better battery pro" in slumber mode with little success. Have had issues with that but that's another story. Still in experimentation mode. Starting to use "best battery stats" in hopes of getting more info.

if you install snowjb it already comes with fast dormancy fix. on that rom, android system doesnt use much battery at all. here's a pic to show what i mean.
I think what we are seeing is that kernel wakelocks -- which can be caused by apps -- get lumped in under Android OS.
For example, I was seeing about 9% sns_async_ev or something wakelocks that went away when I froze Smart Wifi Toggler. This made no sense to me but it turns out they were caused by the app accessing the barometer, and turning that feature off virtually made them go away. Overall this was just a small amount of time awake, but all of these add up in that category. It would have been nice to see that under the app itself but there's no way to differentiate that.

Battery drains quickly for no reason

Hi, my phone drains within 10 hours on standby. It drains while off as well. It has NOTHING to do with my ROM or kernel because I've used multiple and nothing with my apps or wakelock. I bought a new battery with a bigger capacity but it didn't help. It seems absolutely random and I think the hardware is not working correctly. Any help?

Hi. There could be numerous reasons for this battery drain. Firstly, I would recommend attempting to narrow down the problem somewhat by using many of the available apps that come to mind. Try wakelock detector, better battery stats and cpu spy.
It could also perhaps be the radio of your phone. You could also try switching to 2G only or turning GPS or bluetooth off and see if that helps.
All battery related problems take a bit of patience.

have you resetted the battery stats? Your battery could be at the end of its life aswell, but I can't conclude that for you
If you're rooted uninstall google maps and use greenify for hibernate user apps,
In developer options choose background processes at most 2

It also charges very quickly and somehow loses about 10 percent with the battery REMOVED in 45 min.
I think your battery is not compatible with your device hardware.
