Charging and Boot Loop Issue - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Z2 today but I have two strange issues that often overlap. First, I can't turn it off without it initiating a boot loop all on its own. It's not rooted or anything but every time I press the power button and select "Power Off", it turns off and then about 5 seconds later the Sony screen comes back on, stays on for a few seconds, turns back off and repeats. Notably, it doesn't vibrate when the screen turns back on like the device does when I turn it on regularly. I can break the bootloop by holding the power button for about 10 seconds and turning the device back on.
My second issue has to do with charging. If I leave it on the charger for more than a couple minutes, the charging LED stays on and the status bar says its charging even several minutes after I pull it off the charger. The only way to get it off is to turn the device off which in turn initiates the first bug.
Even more confusing, the "boot loop" issue stops (without me having to power on the device) when I plug the device in to charge and will resume if I unplug it.
Any ideas?

Try fixing software with Sony pc companion, if that doesn't work and its brand new I'd raise an RMA. If it's not brand new, and thus might be running non Standard firmware, try flashing a stock ftf for your region and then if required try fixing with pc companion and again RMA it if that doesn't work.

Yeah I tried the repairing and I'd rather not root it so I guess I'll be sending it back.

Same issue here
I have the exact same issue plus the charger issues only happen when using the standart charger, if I use the magnetic charger none of that issues appear, but I still have the boot loop problem.
My phone is NOT rooted and it hasn't been modified in any ways.
Compilation number 23.0.1.A.0.167
Kernel 3.4.0-perf-gd4d661a [email protected] #1
Baseband 8974-AAAAANPZQ-00027-12
The issue appered after a few months of use, in November. I think it didn't coincide with any software update.
It's not a brand new phone so I wouldn't like to return it as I already have lots of information in there.
Thank you for helping.

It's a problem with the charging circuit. Probably one diode got damaged somehow. You need to send in the device for warranty repair. The mainboard needs to be replaced.
I'm quite sure you plugged in the magnetic charger cable upside down.

Galaxy S2 don't turn off but reboot!help!

hello...i hope that someone can help me....when i try to turn off the device,it shut down and after few seconds reboot?why?
also simetime the phone don't turn on and on screen i see a green battery with a thermo....someon can help me?
Did you find the answer to this? i am sending my SGS2 back for replacement. i have the same errors plus the following.
Phone selects speaker rather than earpiece as default for incoming/outgoing calls
Phone on ocasions randomly starts Kies and Voice commands even if there is no physical contact with the phone
sometimes the phone defaults back to a launcher i have never seen before (it is not touchwiz) and i have no idea how to launch it without it doing it automatically.
The faults you mentioned can be bypassed with a battery pull but they are annoying, I didn't have these problems until i upgraded my firmware through Kies to KE7.
I have an O2 branded device.

same issues to me... I'm trying to fix it flashing a stock rom without good results yet In the meantime I'm waiting for a USB jig from ebay before to send it to technical service
I have a I9100M(BELL) flashed with cognition 1.32 with same problem.
Randomly my phone will:
-go into driving mode
-answer calls in speaker phone mode
-start alarm clock
-think its charging when the cable is not plugged in
-Reboot it self/turn it self on when its off
-wont connect to computer or charge even when cable is plugged in.
I need to send it in for repairs what should i flash? there is no bell branded firmwares or roms.

Exactly the same to me
How do you flash congnition? just over the stock rom with odin?
did you flash modem?
Absolutely same here, since coming from CM7 to VillainRom.
Never had that before.
I´m waiting and watching it and your results!
Thanks for this thread.

This has nothing to do with root access.
I cannot believe that any problem related just because you have access to your system.
Back to topic, flashed back to cm but problem persists.
It's getting really bad near to flashing stock and bring it back to change device if someone knows what it is could be helpful.
I also have this problem. I think it has something to do with the usb port.
Because sometimes it just scans for media, or it thinks it is charging. Really weird! Then i just put in the charger and it stops for a while. Turning off will just reboot the device. And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
I hope it is not hardware related...
I was looking for help for a problem I have but this seems to cover most of the problems I'm having.
Mine has recently started going into a strange mode after shutting it down. I get the battery charging symbol alternating with the "battery overheating" symbol.
The only way to stop it is to remove the battery for at least a couple of hours (if you put it straight back in it automaticly starts up and goes back to flashing the battery warnings) or pressing Power, Vol+ and Home and choosing Reboot.
I have also noticed its very slow to respond to plugging the charger in or out. It doesn't always wake-up and bleep when the charger is put in and it stays showing its charging for some time after the charger has been removed.
I was told that the charger should be removed as soon as charging is compleated but surely overnight is the only time we have available to charge these phones!
Depending on the custom rom or kernel you are using, it might not support off mode charging.
To avoid having a "problem" with charging the phone in off mode, some developers decided to make the phone boot up when the phone is been charged when the phone is off.
Going back to an official stock ROM fixes this problem.

As for Cyanogen, since built 23, you can charge the phone when it is in the "off" state. Please wipe out your userdata partition before flashing. Do not restore from a previous backup.
I fixed my reboot problem (rebooting instead of turning off) by letting the battery drain all the way so it couldn't boot anymore. Tried turning it on to see if it really doesn't go on anymore. After that I plugged in the charger and I got the charging-symbol and it did not turn on so I kept it charging overnight while turned off and in the morning it was finished and turned it on.
I also cleaned the usb-port on the phone with a toothpick. It had alot of dust stuck in it which I couldn't see. After that no more problems...for now. They haven't returned for 2 days now.

What kernel and rom are you using? I have not seen the battery overheating symbol on the sgs2.
No, there is no need to remove the phone from charger, when the phone gets to what is considered full, the battery will stop charging by itself.
Are you using the original samsung charger that came with the phone, or are you using a after market charger? Most of these USB chargers do not send a signal on the data lines. When using these chargers, the phone becomes laggy and unresponsive, there is also a delay to register anything on the touch screen. Stay away from these chargers.
For lithium batteries just charge it whenever you feel like it. Lithium batteries have a few thousand deep charge cycles, meaning if you use up all the power, then charge it,you use 1 deep charge cycle. However, if you use the micro cycles for charging, you can charge the batteries a few million times. Leaving the battery on empty for too long will damage the lithium battery.
Can any one confirm if this is a hardware or software issue as i now have the problem when i try and switch the phone off it will just reboot?
The Same issue occurs in my sgs2
hi everybody,
i just got my sgs2 ten days ago
everything seems good at first
then i realized screen standby lock lag problem, there exist a lag between 1 second to 2.5 seconds.
i ignore that due to it cannot be named as a problem, it seems like a bad characteristic
then yesterday , i have faced with another problem
after i have docked the phone to the original vehicle dock kit,
phone cannot be closed via power button , i hold it 1.5 seconds then chose turn off among list, phone looks like to be turned off then after a little while it just vibrates and reboots. That is phone cannot be turned off, it s somehow turn itself on again.
Whats the reason of this problem ?
In another forum one faced with the same problem said that it turned out to be normal when the battery is erased but the problem is occured again after docking.
micro usb connector
I droped my phone in the water, got it alive again, but with all the error(overheat battery symbol, no stable usb connection, reboot when i power off, 100% charged not going away) replaced the micro usb connector with a new one.
Some problems are gone but i still can't connect to pc (kies, debug etc), poweroff problem still happen sometime.
Conclusion: It is not only the usb part of the phone that are causing this problem.
But I do belive its a hardware problem.
Have you phone maybe got to much to drink too..
usb port???
I've recently been experiencing the same problem
When I turned off my phone it switched on again!
And removing battery and plugging it back it also just reboots the phone.
Sometimes the USB connector and charger are confused
Do solved the problem by changing the USB port?
plz help me
Thank you in advance for helping me
This is definately a hardware issue. Clean the usb connector, failing that it will need replacing

[Q] Xperia Go not Charging

I have decided to create a thread here due to the lack of support for any phone not in the Xperia z range from Sony.
Basically my Xperia GO has decided to reject any attempt to charge, whether the phone is on or off it just wont charge, the LED blinks red once upon inserting a USB cable, then nothing... I have managed to get the phone to charge by opening the cover, connecting the charger, disconnecting, reconnecting the battery and letting it charge till 100%, though once removing the cable the phone refuses to charge upon connecting it again.
Vol up + power does not work with the battery completely drained, I have not tried the rubber band trick as of yet, but I doubt it would work. The USB connector port has been replaced, but the issue still persists. I assume that its a kernel issue and flashing a new kernel or updating the phone through Sony's update service might work, but again I have not attempted it yet.
My question is what exactly could be the reason for this problem and are there any sure fire ways of resolving it without having to hand in my phone for repairs as its out of warranty and I'm sure Sony would only do a software repair on the phone leaving me with the same problem in future.
Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated! Otherwise ill have to use the phone as a paperweight.

[Q] Tricky brick question, stuck at charging screen, won't boot

Hi,
I recently helped a friend to change a broken digitizer glass screen on a Nokia Lumia 920 with RM-821. I ordered the new digitizer on ebay from china/hongkong so can't say anything about its functionality or possible compatibility issues.
When I started to change the digitizer the battery was very low. When I thought everything was done properly and the phone was put together again, and tried to start it, and nothing happened. I think I also tried a vol down+power button soft reset, and i remember i got some feedback from the vibrator but nothing from the screen. Well, I took it apart again and quickly discovered that the screen cable wasn't properly attached, so I attached it. (afterwards I saw somewhere that a low-battery soft-reset was a sure way to brick the phone...)
Next step, I've put the phone together and try to start it, nothing happens. Connect to charger, after some seconds a vibration, followed by the Nokia logo and then a screen with a flash and a cog-wheel (nothing animated). This is the state it is permanently stuck in. The only way to "start it" is to connect the charger and wait. If the charger is disconnected at the Nokia logo then it goes to the "no-battery"-icon and the powers off. At the flash-cogwheel it is possible to restart the phone by holding vol-down+power.
I let the charger be in for multiple hours, still the same thing. Took out the battery and charged it manually with external charger and some home-made wiring. That charger directly indicated that the battery was full with its indicator LED, but i still let it be for around an hour. Conclusion: battery is charged and most likely were charged in the phone.
I've tried to connect it through Nokia Software Updater for Retail 4.2.1, and the "my phone doesn't boot"-option doesn't find the phone after holding vol-down+power. (as described here http://www.wpcentral.com/suffering-spinning-cogs-issue-nokia-windows-phone-fix and other places)
No connection with Nokia Care Suite 5.4.119 either, using method as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47195500
SUMMARY
Since connecting the charger starts the phone, some part of the usb must work. The screen apparently work, don't know about the digitizer obviously. Since it is possible to restart from "flash+cog-wheel"-screen the side buttons aren't dead. Since removing the charger at the "flash-cog-wheel" screen doesn't power off the phone the battery does in fact work.
Naturally I can't rule out that I managed to break something on the mainboard when I changed the digitizer, even though I don't think so.
Hope somebody can help!

[Q] Sleep of death (won't turn on)?

Anyone getting the sleep of death on their XTZ2? I'm running completely stock (not even rooted) on 23.0.1.A.4.30 and just experienced the unit not turning on at all until I do power + up volume.
Upon returning to life, the battery was 90%, so it wasn't battery.
Had a bit of a panic attack until I googled the solution (power + up) but this is the first time its happened to my unit, could it be related to the recent upgrade to 23.0.1.A.4.30? Anyone else seen this?
Mine lasted a day and a half after the 23.0.1.A.4.30 update and then became very erratic and kept forgetting wifi login info.
Did a restart and certainly got a sleep of death OK.
Would not switch on at all.
No power + vol up or attempt at repair via PC Companion made any difference to it.
Since gone back to Sony for repair, that was weeks ago, who knows if /when they will return it.
I had the same problem with mine as well I have the 561 the Verizon model. I have received a replacement but have not been able to get it to turn on either. It shows no signs off life at all not even when connected to power AC or PC. My old one would blink red and go dead when connected to a PC but this one doesn't even do that. I haven't had time to call for another replacement yet but really two defective devices in a row the second one didn't turn once.
Finally got mine back from Sony repair agent.
Worked fine for 3 days, then failed to power on again as per original fault.
Once again returned it for repair.
Think I'll give up and buy an iPad instead - at least they seem to be reliable and consistent.
This just happened to my tablet this morning. Tried all options under the sun but can't get it to boot.
I can't even do a factory reset and I don't particularly want to return it under warranty.... :'(
Mine is an xperia z2 tablet sgp561 (USA Verizon) build 17.1.D.0.437, stock 4.4.2. This issue happened to me 5 days ago after I powered off the tablet, it won't turn on again. Battery charge was ~70% at the time. Plugging it with factory Sony usb charger won't do anything, charging status LED remained Off, power button unresponsive. I let the tablet sit for 2 days without charging cable connected hoping the battery will drain completely by itself and the buggy firmware will restart executing at its base address getting out of the bug. Then I connected the crap to a fully charged 15000mah Anker power pack and alas, the charging status LED glowed red and after ~5 more minutes the LCD screen turned On for ~5 seconds showing a big battery icon at the center of the screen indicating 0% charge. Waited about 1 more hour and the charging status LED turned amber. This time I did the "power button + volume up" ritual holding both buttons for 10 sec+, expecting 3 vibrations but didn't feel any. At this point the tablet is still powered off. Because LED = amber, thinking battery must be at least 10% charged by now, just pressed the power button for ~2 sec and surprisingly the normal power On vibration came followed by Sony logo on LCD screen and the rest is normalcy.
From what I can remember, the recent change I made before this problem happened was turning Stamina to On in the battery settings (factory default is Off). I reset all settings back to factory defaults and so far so good.
Finally got mine back from Sony repair agent after about 3 week wait.
Seems to work OK now, fingers crossed it will keep working this time.
The note that came with the return indicated that they replaced the mainboard and battery, which is a better solution than their first attempt which was just to reflash the software.

Dude same thing, WTF is going on, I tried plugging it into charger, nothing. And once I got the msg of red colour battery icon and then I plugged it in. then it started charging and I was happy so I turned it on the it wasn't charging,
Please update me what happened and what they are saying cause I am about to send mine to get it fixed.
Edit: seems that by replacing the battery and mainboard has actually fixed the issue? Guess it's time to send it back to them, Gosh

Did this method work for you? Plus did you come across like it was charging but it wasn't really charging,(like it showed the low battery stat with orange/red colour LED notification but suddenly it vanishes) then it's not responding at all.??
I had this issue 2 times with months in between , no response from power+vol up , no lights when charging , no response from pressing on the red button behind the flaps.
The last time it happened i tried putting it on the charger for a whole day with no result, then decided to let it rest a few days first , since someone had the same issue and it magically came back to life when he got back from a vacation.
So i try to turn it on 2 days later and the tablet to my surprise responds again with blinking red LED, recharching afterwards did the trick and worked again since
In my case i was running CM11 at the time, both times it happened after an update which required a reboot while, still mistified about the cause and the fix , i presume it solved itself by letting the battery drain.
Since then i reverted to stock rom just to be save but havent had it happen since, this also seems to have fixed some touchscreen problems i was having at times.
Hope this helps.
Bloody hell, I've just ordered mine today!
Don't stress. Mine got repaired. if it goes tits up that's what warranty is for
What did Fonebiz indicate was wrong with your Z2.?
They replaced the motherboard in mine.
Exactly the same, works fine now
This just happened to me today. So seems like overall suggestion is to try and let it discharge. The try to start it back up and charge it then. Just want to make sure that's the only potential solution now?
No! Leave it powered off, put in on a known good charger for at least 12 hrs. Don't touch it in that time.
If it does not come alive after that, send it in for repair.
ok..let me try that. I originally tried that and nothing occurred. However, I just found the OEM charger and usb cable and will try that. Unfortunately it's a Verizon version so sending it in will not be covered by Sony warranty. Per the Customer Service that I called.
ok..tried another charger and the red light came on, but it's been over 12 hours and still no go. I did notice that the red light was no longer on (from overnight charging). I left it unplugged for a bit and reconnected. The red light came back on but still no response. Sounds like i'll need to send in?
Looks like it.
Had the same problem on tuesday. Impossible to switch on, no light, none effect with charger, none effect when connected to PC/MAC etc...
After 4 days without charging my Z2, it came back to life, showing only a big red battery icon when pushing some seconds on the power button. Connected to a charger the red led indicator glowed ! (red battery icon is totally different with the original icon when tablet is charging in power off mode)
After a full battery charge with OEM charger and after a normal power on, my Z2 is now perfectly functionnal.

Xperia Z5 Compact fully charged but not turning on

Hello,
My phone's battery was starting to have issues so I bought a new one and replaced it yesterday. I've done it recently on another phone (same model) so knew what I was doing when reassembling it, with the right adhesives and everything. Then I left it plugged for the night as this was advised by the new battery's seller. But this is what happens this morning when I try to turn it on:
- Phone doesn't vibrate when pressing the power button, neither when holding different combinations of Power + volume, etc.
- When I plug it this is what happens: imgur[dot]com/fByubwN The screen turns on as it would normally do, displays the 100% charged battery logo and then just dies (with the green led remaining). The only way to turn the screen on is to unplug and plug it again. But the phone itself isn't booting.
Any thoughts appreciated!

I'd say that the battery is at fault. It can be two things:
- it is not correctly plugged (maybe the connector is not perfectly aligned, or one of the pins is bended)
- it is completely depleted, so won't charge at all.
Disconnect phone from charger and try to test voltage on the motherboard with a voltmeter. If you can't read anything, disconnect the battery and test it directly.
Personally I would say the first problem is more likely - a completely bricked battery is not that common.
Actually the battery was fine. I've opened it again and turns out I've kind of messed up with the flex connectors of the motherboard.
So I was able to boot it while it's open but as soon as I reassemble it, the controls are not detected anymore. It's a matter of millimeters, some parts probably don't sit properly, etc.
We spent some time on it with a guy at a local repair shop, the conclusion was that I had to get a new phone, or a new motherboard which is almost the same haha.
Thank you for taking the time to reply!
