I have a D6503 with A.0.167 from taiwan. When I use it on T-mobile network, the preferred network mode is 4G(preferred)/WCDMA/GSM. I never see an option with LTE in it. Also, the signal is very weak. I'm under the impression that the phone never connects on the LTE network.
Does anyone know what I shall do to fix the problem? Thanks!

Are you sure this is a D6503? I use my imported D6503 with T-Mobile and LTE works fine on 23.0.1.A.0.167-

T-Mobile's network doesn't have the strongest coverage, but whenever you have an LTE signal it should connect that way.
My options look like this:
Preferred network mode
-WCDMA only
-GSM only
-WCDMA (preferred)/GSM
-LTE (preferred)/WCDMA/GSM
I'm positive. I got the information by dialing *#*#SERVICE#*#*.
Could you please tell me your customization version number? It can be found by dialing *#*#SERVICE#*#*, and then select SERVICE INFO -> SOFTWARE INFO. Mine is 1281-5456_R1B, which is for phones used in Taiwan. I am wondering whether that matters and whether I should flash a different firmware.

USA its called 4G which is only 3G/3.5G. Which I don't agree with.
While in other countries 3G/3.5G is called H+/3G

Understood now. When the signal was good, I got 24Mbps down and 12Mbps up. So it's good.

What is interesting is that he has a Taiwan ROM and Sony has the LTE / 4G terminology is swapped by geographical area.

It wouldn't be impossible to get 24 Mbps down on T-Mobile's "4G" HSPA+ network, I've gotten 23 Mbps a couple times. 12 Mbps upload would be a bit of a stretch, usually only 2-4 Mbps are seen.
My phone has customization version 1281-1981_R1B. I can't quite remember off the top of my head but I believe this phone was destined for the Indonesian market.

I'm still so confused. What is what? And yes I've Google's and read Wikipedia but still hasn't awnsered me. Which one is the one is backhauled and they call 4g? (Not lte) like I know umts is 3g but then what is the other two? I know one of them is the backhauled 3g but then what is the other lol.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
HSPA+ is what AT&T called '4G'. HSDPA (for faster download) and HSUPA (for faster upload) are all part of old 3G technologies. UMTS is even older. Technically HSPA+ is 3G as well.
The entire HSPA protocol stack is a giant evolving standard with many different revisions (called release). UNTS is first release. HSUPA is release 6. HSDPA is before that. Current AT&T 4G HSPA+ is at release 10. T-Mobile is release 10 or higher. Both companies call this 4G.
The first step required to upgrade WCDMA to HSPA is to improve the downlink by introducing HSDPA. The upgrade to HSDPA is often just a software update for most WCDMA networks, and as of May 2008 90 percent of WCDMA networks have been upgraded to HSDPA.
In other words...it's exactly what the person above me said...
That's odd, I read Wikipedia and it answered it for me.
Yea I know what they call 3g and 4g lol. Its just that my area last week just got 3g. And it says hspa under status. And even the att website here says its not the backhaulrd what they call 4g. And I was told hy 611 they we wouldnt gget backhauled speeds. But I have hspa. Download speeds always around 2mb down. Can't really test it cause when I'm in a known 4g area its still the same

Best explanation ever is found here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/2g-3g-4g-and-everything-in-between-an-engadget-wireless-prim/
Also what explains the issue with it and having 3bars of service phone calls work fine even with the h+ symbol but no data. It happens a lot. Its not just tmy phone either it does it with other androids and iI'm sick and tired of it

You have couple of issues there. First of all the status page on GS2 is known to be broken. It randomly flips through UMTS, HSPA and HSDPA etc. It is in no way reflect the actual protocol being used. Second of all, in most areas, 3G and 4G have no speed difference since they all over congested. You will only see signigicant difference in areas that are not densely populated. The signal icon of H+ is also not to be trusted. AT&T is known to stick to one icon for all protocols so that you can't easily find out which area is upgrade 4G and which is not.
Try dial *#0011# and see what the Samsung's diagnose screen says.
Yea iI know to not trust the status bar lol

I unlocked my 920 from EE & I am using it on Vodafone but I cannot get a 3G connection. It stays on EDGE all the time & that connection is fine as far as data just no 3G.
Input the APN settings from the Vodafone website & that was no help.
Contacted Vodafone CS but they could not help me.
So anyone have any suggestions?

2. Tap Settings
3. In the drop-down menu under "Network type", select automatic if it's not already (2G will be EDGE/GPRS, 3G will be HSPA/UMTS. and 4G is LTE)
also make sure 3G band is set to automatic instead of band 2 or something like that, I had a bad experience seeing my phone not getting any signal at all after mistakenly put the 3G on band 2 only and no network could get connected.

That won't fix the OP's issue. The OP gets data on EDGE, just not 3G.
I eventually took it to an area with a very strong 3G signal and it went onto 3G. But it's still very choppy and I have an issue that if it drops off 3G it can be hard to get it to go back onto it unless I take it to a max strength signal area.

That could be or your operator or the firmware.
The operators can control the amount of cell phones handing off from 2G to 3G, also the network does the same if the 3G is very congested.
Also the firmware may take a heavy part on this if the operator has some special configuration on its handset to go easily on 3G camping.

it does not just happen to phones on other networks, I have a lumia on the EE network and I don't get full 3g always, its always switching between EDGE and 3G although the signal is supposed to be strong, called into customer support and they told me it was due to network congestion.. :|

I had a similar problem and I solved it by forcing 3G only... this happens when the 2g or E signal is very strong while 3G is weak:
dial the following: ##3282#
it will open a menu for you, go to the bottom where settings are and choose settings, under settings there is something called "network type" choose 3G from there and you should see it.
this will tell you if it is a carrier issue or a phone issue. I don't recommend always having it that way as it will drain your battery when signal is low and drop calls instead of switching to 2G during calls.

Saleh

Hi,
Is there a way to let my Z2 Force using LTE?
I'm in a place where LTE signal is not so strong, so I think the phone preferred H+ than LTE. My friend told me that he was positive that there is LTE signal here.
Thanks advance.

You can choose LTE only but that's not smart thing to do.
If there's no LTE signal you won't have signal at all and battery will discharge faster because your device will struggle to connect to and fine LTE...
LTE/WCDMA is perfectly fine.
If there's LTE signal device will use it.

No longer available in lollipop?
Hi,
After upgrading to lollipop this option is already n/a (not applicable) can anyone please help how I can force LTE only in this phone?
Interesting on the Z2 it says "Network Mode N/A" in grey. On the good old Z with Lollipop its still working. Just used it to force the better LTE for USB tethering.

Could anyone help me on this please..

Thank you chiikko561, that helped.
I set up the APN. I was only getting Tmobile's Edge network. If I changed the network mode to LTE/CDMA if forces it to LTE but I cannot make calls or txt. I am trying to find an option for my Verizon unlimited data plan. I cannot get anything but satellite for internet where I live. This phone would become our home internet hotspot. I don't really need talk/txt on this phone so I guess LTE would work for me, just want to solve it. Any suggestions appreciated.

VoLTE is not dependent upon band 12. I have TMO and am on band 4 with VoLTE...
It's strange but I think Verizon is behind this issue because I can get LTE using the LTE/GSM/UMTS for about 30 seconds then it just drops from 4G LTE to H. When I turn off Mobile Data then turn it back on it will see T-mobile's 4G then drop again.
Am trying to do switch also my V10 from verizon to tmobile when I put my sim in it automatically switches to tmobile apn and does the same it shows 4g/let then goes to H any suggestions....
You may never get full function of the Verizon phone on T-Mobile.
Reason is Verizon runs on CDMA and T-Mobile runs on GSM.
And I don't think the V10 has the ability to be both.
I'm in the USA. Got this phone, put my FreedomPop SIM in (a AT&T MVNO).
And pretty much everywhere in my city it stayed at 3G.
I ported my number to Red Pocket (another AT&T MNVO) because I was sick of FreedomPop's messaging app you're forced to use.
With the RP SIM, same thing, mostly 3G.
I know this phone doesn't support AT&T's main LTE band 12/17, but supports 2,4 and 5.
So, playing around with settings (*#*#4636#*#*) I changed Set Preferred Network Type to: LTE/UMTS auto and it changed from 3G 850MHz (Band 5) to 4G Band 2.
Will it fall back to 3G when it needs to with this setting?

OK, I changed my Preferred network type from 4G/3G/2G to 3G/2G and it automatically changed to 3G.
Changed back, and back on 4G.
Think I'll be OK.
Something to check for fellow US users that might have this issue.
I'm also in the U.S.and have freedompop but I get 4G. At least it says 4G in the status (not LTE). I don't know whether I'm actually getting 4G speed. Seems fast enough.
Good to know this trick, in any event
