pretty sure if you're rooted now that the update won't install even though it's downloaded properly. the latest is NK2, which is rootable after the fact so depending on what version you're on now and if you rooted via towelroot and want to keep KNOX at 0x0. if you do, look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s5/general/how-to-root-s5-firmware-knox-0x0-t2909352
I'm wondering the same thing.. have you done it yet?
When I got my phone, I was at NK2. I Odin'd the kernel to NE6, rooted there (towelroot, then SuperSU from the Play Store), then Odin'd the NK2 kernel back. Knox still at 0x0.
There's a thread in the general section on how to update and keep root.

Sorry don't know where to post this ...but here goes...does anyone know or think being on ME7 that we will ever be able to update to the latest operating version available directly from ME7? In other words IF..WHEN..4.4 comes out will we have to odin to MI1 then root, then odin 4.3 then root then odin 4.4 then root (hopefully) or does someone think we will be able to go from ME7 to the latest update directly..Just wondering if I should start the process now..... Mod can delete if doesn't think appropriate.....

that logic seems a tad bit strange, don't you think if there was a 4.4 root method that you could just unroot and return your ME7 back to stock and take all the OTA updates until getting to 4.4 and then root. eleminating all that work rooting something that you aren't going to keep? just a thought.
that sounds to simple..hahaha...I guess I just over thought the idea...all these forums with whats going on and all the hard work and updates and work arounds I guess I got caught up in it and was feeling kinda left out....thanks for straightening me out haha
Hi guys it's been a while since I've been on here. I have a quick question. I know the S4 bootloader can't be unlocked yet. Which is fine with me..but I found this thread to root it but it says not to do it if I accepted the OTA update. How do I know if I have the update? I did update my phone the other day but now it's asking for me to do it again. So I am think I don't have the latest update. I just want to root my phone to take out all this samsung and verizon crap it comes with. Hopefully when the bootloader is able to be unlocked I can start flashing custom roms. If anyone could help me out here that would be awesome. Here's the thread that I was going to follow.

There are separate OTA updates to get you from MDK to ME7, ME7 to MI1, and MI1 to MJ7. You'll get prompted for each of these as there's no way to skip an update.
To find out what you're running, Settings, More, About Phone. Look at the Build number field.

That depends on what you want to do. Updating to MI1 will still allow you root, but no custom recovery.
There's no big advantage there, but MI1 will allow you to update to MJ7 and keep root, which is perhaps worthwhile as that's 4.3.
I find my GS4 to be a lot faster on MJ7 so it was worth it. But only you can decide what's best.

You can root MJ7 using vroot. Since I don't trust that, I'm not rooted.

But the bootloader is still locked and I cant flash any custom roms yet right? And MJ7 is the newest update that is out???
Thanks
If you're on ME7 you can install safestrap to flash TW roms, but no AOSP. There's no point to upgrade to MI1 if that's what you want to do, because there's certain kernel issues using MI1 with safestrap. If you want to be on 4.3 rooted and don't care about flashing, then are safe methods to update firmware and keep root. Just follow the guides in their respective threads.

Sorry to straight out ask, but I'm overly paranoid now after reading so many different threads.
I have a rooted S3, and I guess its time to update (which I've accidentally clicked update many times, lucky I have Teamwin stops the update, and I can reboot back to the old version
I'm wondering if there is a seemless way of updating. In the past I would update and have to re-root. For the most part this has worked out pretty well. I havent bricked my phone yet (knock on wood). But I've been reading and I'm not sure how to proceed from here.
Is there way to update my rooted 4.1.2 to 4.3 the way it is now? or do update the update and re-root the phone using one of the '4.3 I535' guides?
In case its needed
Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3
SCH I353
version 4.1.2

Have You already tried through KIES ? Because normally in phone settings you are not able to update it higher than 4.1.2 but in Kies I've updated mine up to 4.3 with no root so this was safe. You should try it out. When You will fail xD and "You have already installed the newest version" just flash insecure kernel with ODIN download some 4.3 official software and than install STOCK kernel. I suggest right before it to use triangle away to reset Your binary counter for fully stock S3 with no trace of rooting.

I havent tried updating yet.
Do you have a guide I can follow? Will I have to reroot when I'm done?
sorry, I'm not so good with smartphones and rooting/flashing.
You are in the wrong forum, anything you flash from here (for the i9300) will hard brick your phone. Go to the specific forum for your S3 model.

I must be missing the how-to thread, but I've searched and come up empty handed...
I have a Verizon S4 on 4.3 with root. Originally I had 4.2 rooted, did the procedure to keep root when I upgraded to 4.3, but now I cannot upgrade to 4.4.2 without removing root (the OTA fails).
How do I remove root from 4.3 so that I can take the OTA update? I found this thread here, however, the Stock Firmware Page only lists 4.2.2 as an option, not 4.3. I didn't want to brick my phone by flashing to 4.2.2.
Is this really the simplest way to make my rooted 4.3 take the OTA for 4.4.2?
Thanks!

First of all, I would recommend staying at MK2. There are many reasons. If you REALLY want to goto 4.4.2, you have to open SuperSU and tap on Cleanup for permanent unroot. Then try taking the OTA.
EDIT: To get root back on 4.4.2, use towelroot.
EDIT 2: If you want to keep MK2 baseband but upgrade to 4.4.2, follow surges method.
Forgot to list that...I tried using SuperSU but it just sits there with the spinning circle forever and never says it has completed.
I have no real reason to go to 4.4.2, other than my desire to try the new OS...
xXsquirr3lsXx - Can you elaborate on why you recommend staying on MK2?
Code3VW - The other option you have is to ODIN the NC5 tar.
You could use the verizon repair tool , it will load the latest version of android and then use towelroot for root. I had the same problem on my wifes S3 and it worked and it is confirmed towelroot works on the S4.

The very very very slim outside chance of finding a bootloader exploit...would most likely be found for pre - kitkat releases.

So I found stumproot and even my old noob mind was able to figure out. Worked great and loved it. Update came out for 4.4.2 and I did it thinking it was only a sprint update. Yeah dumb move. I know. I lost my root after the update So I redid stump. Says it's rooted but it's not. Now with lollipop coming out soon should I just wait for that or any ideas? I think I read I could flash original on phone and stump again but not sure how. If I do lollipop am I screwed even longer? Thanks for the help. In advance all.

If you want root, you'll need to revert to zv4 with flashtool. It's stickied in General.
If you take any ota's, you will not have root.
Time will tell on what L is gonna do to us.
You need to flash tool back to ZV4 then just wait until someone makes a flashable stock. Then you can flash that and the supersu recovery package. Then you will have rooted lollipop. You need to make sure that you flashtool back and reroot with stump and flash latest twrp.

Just to let you know in advanced you have 5 days until ZV8 (lollipop) comes out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/sweet-coming-to-g3-near-t3022710
