I have a sgh-t399n (samsung galaxy light) running stock rooted/busybox/xposed
I also have a couple lg motions (all are rooted/busybox/xposed) some on stock 4.0.4 and some have cm11
Im a metro pcs user and all are native metro. Phones.
I want to tether. I don't have internet where I am outside of my phone so I wanna activate a phone on the 60dollar unlimited plan and use it as my personal wifi hotspot
I hear its possible to get around the metro restriction at a system level. Something about decompling and recompiling the system framework res apk or something like that and editing a string or two of code.
Anyone know anything about that?
Alternatively....I noticed that even though both of my motions aren't active on a network the metro stock rom motion still prompts me to sign up for the service (to tether) at metro I noticed my motion running cm11 doesn't prompt me to sign up for tethering. It simply connects but obviously it has no data to share since its not active on any networks.
If I activate the motion should it allow me to tether since it didnt give problems when I tried before activating it? Im referring to the one running cm11 not stock
And if not then help bypassing at a system level on would be greatly appreciated.
I figure this is the best place for this.

Bought my atrix at radioshack and then rooted it and took it to the att store to see if i could use the webtop with wifi tether or by adding an apn. Didnt work. Wondering if someone can make a program like 3gunrestrictor to trick the atrix its connected to its own wifi connection somehow. Any thoughts?
I second this.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4g XDA app.
I was able to get it to work somehow.
Here is what i did:
1) Created the custom APN for free tethering as described here.
2) Under APN type i put the following: default, dun, tether
3) i made sure my wifi hostspot is working properly (to make sure i setup the APN correctly). Once confirmed i shut down the hotspot app.
4) connected the HD media dock and launched webtop - it tried to verify the connection and kinda got stuck there.
5) i then changed the APN from the one i created to a built in one called "AT&T US Tether". at that point Webtop got access to the internet somehow (an no i don't have a tethering plan, i have an grandfathered unlimited data plan).
6) I immediately switched back to my custom APN after i saw webtop passed the connection authorization stage and voila...it is online via 3G/4G. I know for sure that the webtop is connecting through the custom APN and somehow - it works.

+1 on this behavior...
Although I did not switch back to the custom APN, nor did I specify the APN type. I did go to the ATT website to check my existing plan and still shows unlimited data...
glad to hear you guys got it to work (haven't been able to get that method to work for tethering myself, can't change the MMS Protocol). ok, my dock arrives this weekend, one other question. can ATT tell if I'm going this (using custom APN) to enable tether for the laptop dock? I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to lose their unlimited data plan. I asked this question once already and so have a couple others buy have not seen a response.
I'd still rather have some sort of ios like app that tricks the phone into thinking its on wifi, but guess that's not possible.
AWESOME
Thank you so much! I also did not have to switch back to the ATT US network, just left it on the custom one described above and it worked beautifully... WITHOUT changing MMS Protocol because it doesn't even show up on my phone.
my account still says I've used 5932.13 MB of Unlimited.
also, I turned on mobile hotspot, and I'm able to share my phone's connection via wifi to my Mac, WHILE using webtop firefox browser on my Atrix Laptop dock... BEAUTIFUL.
thanks again!
glad its working for you guys, i'm still very anxious about att noticing this somehow.
Does changing this affect anything else when just using the phone? if I can the laptop dock working without changing anyway from my tethering plan I think I am sold. Can you post a couple ss of what your pan settings screens look like? Do you have to change back to the regular one to use the phone?
I am very good at searching before I post questions, but I keep getting an error saying search is currently not available.
On my S3 there were ways to tether via WiFi and USB without being detected on my grandfathered in unlimited data play. Can anyone confirm that there is proven method via the LGOG. Ny phone is rooted, unlocked, custom kernel, snow rom, and various other mods.
If someone can confirm a working way of doing this, I will provide them with file hosting and subdomain on my server, with full ftp access... etc. Thanks!

Also, let me know if this is in the wrong section
I used the native tethering on SnowJB fairly heavily without issue and as far as I can tell it was never detected.
I was rooted and running various ROMs on my Samsung Infuse a few months ago, and I got an email saying they would add the tethering service to my plan if I continued to use it.
A couple years ago I had a jailbroken iPhone and tethered a lot of data and never had an issue.
I have not yet tried on the LGOG in fear of getting a $40/month service automatically added to my bill.
Sorry I don't have an answer, just sharing my experience I've encountered while tethering.

avoiding detection would probably mean using a method that doesn't rewrite the TTL's on the outbound packets. I've used wifi-tether w/o issue as have many others, I'm sure. I suspect that wifi-tether doesn't preserve the TTL's, but people get away with it because the cost/benefit to carriers is to pick the top 1% of bandwidth users and examine their usage for good reason to stop them somehow, illegal tethering being a good convenient one.
I'm sorry I don't have a solution for you, as I've also searched for just such a thin and not found it. I am curious what others are doing for tethering on this device, though.
If used sparingly, you PROBABLY won't get caught. I used foxfi on my old phone on different occasions and never recieved any notifications about tethering.
jonasl (if you don't recognize the name, he is very good at what he does) had a post in the SnowJB thread a while back about fixing the tethering issues people were having. From what I understand of it, the tethering checks to see if AT&T customers have the entitlement to tether, but since this is a ported ROM, it isn't able to find out if you are entitled (the code doesn't exist to finish the check). His fix circumvents the check (which as he says "This will as a sideeffect also give you tethering even if you aren't paying for it").
I have implemented the fix in case I needed it, but have not had a need to tether since, so I can't vouch for it in that regard, I can say everything still works as expected.
jonasl's post
If you really want to avoid detection, you could run a socks proxy on your phone that forwards to another socks proxy on the internet. Then you need a way to use the socks proxy on your phone. On the client side it can be easy (web browsers have a socks proxy setting, and there are wrappers to socksify anything on your pc) or harder (if you're tethering a tablet or game console or something). Finally, you need a way to bring up both your wireless and mobile data connections at the same time - you could use wifi tether for this if you only need to tether wireless clients, or a more manual method if you need your phone to be a regular wifi client on your network.
This is my first post here, so I made sure I checked the forum for previous issues that may relate to my problem, to no avail (nothing that matches exactly).
Basically, I can't tether anymore, it was working fine last week, but now my other devices will connect, but with "Limited or no Connectivity" (Laptop and iPod Touch). I have a data plan and tethering access through my provider (Rogers in Canada)
Here's is what I have:
Samsung Galaxy S4
Rooted (TWRP installed)
Custom ASOP 4.2.2 ROM installed (DEODEX)
Custom ASOP Kernel
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342298)
As of this morning, tethering has ceased to function, as stated above, I can enable and my devices can see the network, but they will never acquire internet access after connection, even though I have full signal and the phone itself has internet access
Please note, tethering was working on this ROM (but not the kernel) last week.
I would post this in the ROM thread, but I’m unable to do so as I cannot post in the developer board until I have 10+ posts under my belt
Bump (Update)
Anyone else out there encountering this issue?
I have been trying to figure out the root of the issue ever since my original post, but still not too much further. Seems that as soon as I revert to my touchwiz ROM, all works as it should, but any custom ROM I try (and I've tried many), tethering does not work. I have verified the APN settings are the same on the touchwiz version (stock ROM) and the custom ROMs that I've tried todate, very frustrating and I can't seems to find anyone with the same problem. I even call Rogers and had them remove and readd the tethering flag on my account, to no avail.
Howdy,
Found the solution to my tethering issues, simply go to the Play Store and search for this app:
ISWAT Tether Unlocker Free
There will be a rather obnoxiously loud app that will play before it performs the operation to unlock your tethering, but afterwards, it works as it does with the stock ROM. You're free to uninstall the app afterwards and you'll retain your tethering abilities
I was using an international ROM, over 100gb of data used on my 3gb hotspot, but then suddenly today I got a message pop up on my phone that I have used all 3gb of hotspot data, and I must upgrade to continue using hotspot.
I switched roms out to the infinity rom from this tmobile forums, can't even connect now.
Very frustrating right now as I am on vacation and need my hotspot to work.
Any ideas? I went through the steps to manually configure my system apks to stop tethering provision checks but the infinity rom already has those provisions enabled.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other tmobile users experience this? About to flash back to an international rom and see if anything is fixed. Paying for hotspot data seems absurd when I already pay for unlimited data.

Ok, I think i figured out how to do that. I will post if I keep having issues. Thanks for the tip.
I also found out that I am able to browse any https website, but any http website seems to trigger the buy more hotspot data splashpage. Odd
Just thought I would throw out a question. As a KitKat user with a custom ROM I enjoyed pretty seamless WiFi Calling capabilities on my Note 3. I recently loaded the AOKP Oreo ROM and happened to go to a place that didn't have signal (I must admit that isn't very hard to do in my area) and although I loaded Google Voice and could use that number on the local WiFi in the building to make and receive text and calls, I was curious if there was a way to load the native WiFi calling Sprint offers which lets me use my Sprint phone number. I tried downloading the Sprint WiFi APK v. 1 and v.2 but they didn't seem to work.
Anyone else have any thoughts? I am using Magisk now and even tried an old app that supposedly provides a direct way to activate the WiFi calling abilities but no luck there either.
I have my KK system backed up on TB and tried restoring the WiFi Calling app from there but it didnt seem to want to load either. Perhaps I am missing a companion app that needs to run as well?
All suggestions will be entertained!
