Hey guys,
I have been looking for a method to root my xperia z2 for a couple of days, but all the methods i found didn't work
I hope you can help me out
Here's a screenshot of the About section of my phone.
Android version: 4.4.4
Model number: D6503
Build number: 23.0.1.A.0.167
Thanks,
If you spend 5 min looking through the forum or searching you'd have found out that rooting is not possible on a 4.4.4 based firmware directly. You need to downgrade or unlock your BL (not recommended!)

You can use flashtool to downgrade...see in development section
Use Flashtool to downgrade, root, backup TA partition, unlock bootloader, do whatever you want
Thanks so much
I'll try that flash tool then ^^
>>First Downgrade using Flash tool
>>usb debugging on// and Root phone using "Easy root toolkit V11"
>> Backup TA ITS IMPORTANT,,,, using may be "Backup TA.9.11""
>>install CWM or XZdual recovery
>>use PRFCreator V 05 and create pre rooted firmware using 23.0.X.X.XXX ftf
>>Copy to your sd and flash throgh CWM ( no apps loss)

Just bought a Z on stock 4.2.2
Model SGP311
Build: 10.31.C.0.136
I'd like to install a custom recovery and root it also.
Which is better for the Z, CWM or TWRP?
Is there a thread that has a guide on rooting & recovery?
Also should I bother updating to official 4.3?
Anyone can help out? Not sure if I want to perform the OTA update before rooting and saving a backup just in case.

Check out Nut's threads on DualRecovery. You can have both recovery ... Vol UP for CWM and Vol DOWN for TWRP

Do I need to update to latest FW to unlock the bootloader in order to root?
I remember having to do that for my TF300T in the past.

Nope. Depends on what you want to flash to your tablet. My bootloader is unlockable but I didn't unlock it, didn't have the need to. You can flash any Sony firmware and get root with them without unlocking your bootloader. If you will keep running the stock Sony ROM but only want to root and recovery then you don't need to unlock your bootloader. Only unlock your bootloader in order to flash a custom ROM, basically to flash a different kernel...and don't forget to backup your TA if you unlock your bootloader or bye bye Bravia Engine.
I had the TF101 and the TF300T also ... I find this one way easier to molest. hehehee ... The Xperia tablet Z is a very nice upgrade from the TF300T

Ok, for now root and recovery is all I want. So no need to unlock bootloader, yet. I had to do it on the TF300 for the custom ROM, you're right.
TA is a partition right? Haven't heard about it before.
Can it be backed up via recovery?

Best method to backup your TA partition is too use this tool (need to have root on your tab first) :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292598
If you don't want to unlock bootloader you don't have to care about TA.
Please note that with xperia device you can relock bootloader once unlocked if you have made a backup of the TA partition ( not the case with asus TF300)

Forgot to ask, if I update via OTA to 4.3, will I lose the root?
Also do you guys have a link for step-by-step root/recovery guide?
Hmm acording to this thread you need to be unlocked to install CWM. can it be done without?

I don't believe OTA will work if you are rooted. Even if you get the notification, the update wont go through. What you need to do is downgrade to 4.2.2 or 4.1.2 and root with DoomLord's 1 click root, then you install DualRecovery from Nut's thread and flash the zip of the latest firmware for your tablet model, Power off without rebooting and flash a stripped FTF of that build. Reboot and you will have the latest firmware rooted and DualRecovery already installed. I don't know which tablet model you have but the threads with explanation are there.
This is one of them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588442
* You don't need to unlock your BL to install either CWM or TWRP

Ota will not work, if you're still on 10.31.C.0.136 and you want last 4.3 rom with root on locked bootloader you have to do this :
1) Root 10.31.C.0.136 with this tool (vroot) : http://www.mgyun.com/en/GetVRoot
2) Then Install @[NUT] dual recovery : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606, you need to dl this file from his repository : http://nut.xperia-files.com/downloa...scmVjb3ZlcnkyLjcuOTQtQkVUQS5pbnN0YWxsZXIuemlw
You will now have a rooted rom with custom recovery
3) Make a nandroid backup
4) Next to upgrade to last 4.3 rom (10.4.1.B.0.109),first read this thread for the 'how to' :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588442 but you have to use the files from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2671276
Need some reading to understand the process but this is the only way atm
Thanks.
I have the dualrecovery installed and did a backup also.
I believe it is also rooted (there wan an option to root after installing the dualrecovery mod)
Is there any major beneficial reason to go from 4.2.2 to 4.3?

Custom Roms
So it turns out I can't unlock my bootloader but can still use this method to root. Does this still mean that I can flash custom roms on my phone? I was very excited to get cyanogenmod on this beast of a phone, it'll be really disappointing if I can't.
OTA Updates
Will rooting the phone still give me access to OTA updates? And if I do still get them, will updating to Lollipop remove root from the phone?
how to lock the bootloader

There is no root exploit for 4.4.4 with locked bootloader yet. You can root a previous fw and flash a pre-rooted 4.4.4 rom in recovery.

There is no way to root that, at least with locked bootloader.
I kind of rushed into this
Just wondering mainly about the 'TA' stuff, from what I read - this will not affect any of that and I can unroot and get it back to warranty standard at any time by flashing, but how would I go about backing up the TA after this has completed?
Also will i lose my google auth app when this has completed because I totally overlooked that when I started and I'm worried now I will be locked out of all my accounts. lol
Thanks guys

Flash back a 4.4.2 firmware with Flashtool, root it, install the dualrecovery from [NUT] and flash a pre-rooted 4.4.4 update from the recovery.

DRM keys are only lost if you unlock your bootloader. Flashing stock ftf does not do that (exclude .ta files and use the same country/provider you bought the phone from)

Nope only way to root is flash a pre rooted zip and like 4.4.4 there wont most probably be any other way to root. So yes you will have to downgrade to 4.4.2-->Root-->Install Recovey-->Flash pre rooted 5.0

Basically the steps are as follows: Downgrade to Android 4.4.2 using Flashtool, then root with TowelRoot, install XZDualRecovery, then install a prerooted flashable Lollipop with TWRP if you like Lollipop. No need to unlock the bootloader. All the information should be available in the forum. Good luck!

That would be the last step to use the prerooted flashable.
I would recommend not unlocking your bootloader. If you want to unlock it, you need to run an additional program to backup your DRM keys, otherwise they will be lost for good.
You will need the correct 4.4.2 FTF file for your model number, then use Flashtool to flash it. It will wipe everything and restore to factory defaults. Instructions in the following post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2-tablet/general/ftf-collection-locked-unlocked-bl-t3061431
Then you can basically follow the instructions in this post to root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2792056
And XZDualRecovery from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794175
Hello, I have a Xperia z2 tablet on lollipop 5.0.2. Firmware 23.1.A.1.28
Cannot unlock bootloader as tablet is set for a certain UK Mobile network being O2.
Ideally all I want is root to remove bloatware and use xposed. But I want to keep lollipop. Which I'm guessing I can't do? As I can't flash a custom recovery for prerooted stock roms. As cannot unlock bootloader. Is this correct?
Thanks

What you need to do is install a rootable STOCK FTF first.
To do so, you can use Flashtool, which as an inprogram function that lets you download and flash a stock firmware.
http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php
Havent tinkered my Z2 Tab for a long time, so my information could be somewhat inaccurate. But doing a fast search, i find out that:
α) You need Easy Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53448680#post53448680
β) You have to be on 4.4.2, probably the chrome://mega/content/secure.html#!xZAAyYoD!EFFk9hRoYgPXITY2_d5QtiyJMgHMbLMK9fDbSzgW8Gg (17.1.A.0.402 Generic Germany)
Looks like the buildin Flashtool miniapp of finding firmware for your device, wont get you a firmware that old. You could try it (its called Xperifirm in the options) but it probably is a waste of time.

Thanks for the info. I believe I can use kingroot to root lollipop. But it's abit suspect in the data it takes from the device. Plus I don't know if that will give me access to \system? If I downgrade to a rootable ftf and root it when I then ota back to lollipop that will then remove root. Also As I won't be able to flash a custom pre rooted rom of lollipop because I can't unlock bootloader to install a custom recovery. I this correct?
