Wifi Turned Off unless i Disable Mobile Data - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

My mother in law got an ATT Alpha and tried to connect to wifi. It will connect and immediately say wifi turned off. When you disable mobile data it enables wifi. That makes no sense... why would the phone favor mobile data.
How can we correct this? I have owned 5 Samsung devices and never seen this.

Beacuse the phone has a Smart network switch feature. You can turn off in the wifi menu.

We turned that off and it still didnt work. we then turned it back on and it didnt correct the issue either. Is a restart needed when you do or something?
Kinda odd that in a home with nearly no data signal from the provider (they use femtocell) that it would prefer the mobile data network over the wifi.

apparently a reboot was needed. thx!

[Q] How to use mobile data even though wifi is not turned off?

Hi everyone,
My phone's wifi module (also bluetooth) was broken and cannot be used.
It can be turned on, but does not work. and cannot be turned off then.
It reports "error" status.
Unless I restore factory setting or new flash it, no other way to fix this.
Thus, I cannot use mobile data (3g, Edge, HSDPA etc) as internet connection,
because the system would use wifi instead of mobile service if wifi is not off.
Do you know my problem from my discription?
It's some complex...
What I want is any solution from the following two:
1) How to turn off wifi? The module is broken, it reports error when I turn off it from the settings menu.
2) How to enable mobile data thouth wifi is not off?
I guess some operation from the console (command line) is needed to do this.
If I get any one solution above, I can solve my problem.
Thank you very much for reading my post.
Wish you good luck.

even if the wifi is still on you should still be able to use mobile data since the wifi cannot connect to any wifi points.
how did you break it? maybe that is messing up the mobile data part aswel stopping it from connecting

Thanks for you reply.
I almost forgot the post.
The module that controls wifi and bluetooth does not work because of I knocked down a bottle of water that aside the phone.
Now I only have to never enable wifi at any time.

[TIP] Smart Action: WiFi Connection

Just thought I'd share something that is really working for me in terms of battery life:
Create a smart action that disables cellular data whenever you are connected to a WiFi network.
I have been consistently getting 12+ hours of battery with moderate to heavy use when on only on WiFi.
Thanks for the tip. I will definitely try this.

I have the same setup. Also have an action when I turn my screen off it disables wifi, background sync, cell data, and GPS. 12+ hrs here also.

I was thinking about setting something like that up, but was worried about interference with calls & SMS & junk... Any problems to report?

Why would you turn data off when screen is off??? Don't make sense doing that.
On mine data turns off the moment I connect to WiFi and that is the way it is supposed to work. Do you see a H, E, or whatever data icon next to the bars when you connect to WiFi? If not, it means data is already off. Why use the smart action then?

Calls and SMS you should be fine with because they do not require a data connection.

IIRC, although a WiFi data connection superceeds a cellular data connection when it is active, the 3G/4G radio is still alive even if it isn't involved in data transfers during that time..
I've certainly noticed improved battery life when on WiFi but explicitly turning the 3G/4G (mobile data) radio off.

How not?? Your screen is off and 3G/WiFi is killing your battery for no reason (unless you are downloading or background sync on for a reason), so why not have it off when screen is off and save battery. I still stick with JuiceDefender for this.

1. Data radio is one and the same with your cellular calls radio, so unless you go into flight mode, it is going to be active.
2. If it is not sending or receiving data it is not using more energy than when data is disabled and cellular stays enabled.

Interesting you say that, but I've noticed that as far as the what the phone's reporting via settings/toggle widgets etc.. "mobile data" is still active when WiFi is active (even if its status disappears from the notification bar and no actual mobile data activity is going on).. and, it can be explicitly turned off - leaving you still able to receive calls etc. Perhaps its not turning the
radio "off" per-se, but its definitely seems to be doing something over and above just letting WiFi take precidence for data transactions..
I've definitely noticed an improvement in battery life by doing this, over and above simply turning on and connecting to WiFi and NOT explicity turning mobile data off..
I also noticed that in some older versions/flavours of android (2.1, 2.2) the option to explicitly turn off "Mobile Data" wasn't present, relying instead (I assume) on what you've described above..

I don't believe this is correct. I believe the Wi-Fi chip is independent of the cellular antenna. That is what I have seen in every tear down of the phone.

Where did I say WiFi radio and cellular radio are in one chip? I said DATA and CALLS chip is one and the same.
I thought that it would be better to bring back an old thread rather than start a new one.
I have a smart action as described in this thread that turns off cellular data whenever I am connected to wifi. However, the problem I have is that cellular data does not turn back on whenever I disconnect from wifi. I have to manually go into my settings and enable data. Has anyone else run into this?

I sorta have the same(ish) problem. Data can take a little while to activate after I'm disconnected from WiFi. Every once in a while, I need to turn airplane mode on and off in order for data to turn blue. The fact that MMS messages are disabled with this Smart Action is a little disappointing too, but I don't receive enough while I'm home to be super frustrated by it...

I think the problem is to do with Smart actions not returning your device back to the exact state it was in before the action was triggered.. Possibly also issues with other smart actions interfering with the state of other parameters..
I wonder why Moto didn't go with an 'exit action' approach used by apps like Tasker?

[Q] S3 Wifi, Roaming and Time Issue. Please help

I am away form home now and facing some frustrating issues with my new S3.
1. I cant connect to any WIFI network though the WIFI connection has very good signal strength. I always get the msg 'Network disabled. Poor Connection'. There is nothing wrong with the WIFI as i can connect it with my laptop and my buddy could connect to it using his IPhone.
2. My roaming time is completely wrong. It does not follow the time of the country I am in. It is showing the same time as my home country network. Shouldnt it automatically detect the network and shows the correct time like Iphone?

1. Restart the router & try just using 2.4Ghz in settings > wifi > advanced
2. Ensure: menu > settings > date & time > check [auto date & time] and [auto time zone]

Beginnin to regret my decision to get a S3. So complicating!
If you happen to have a case on, remove it and try again.

Hi, this is my first post, as I created my account specially with the purpose to answer you.
After being faced with the problem all day and reading all possible materials on the topic in google and here, my dad walked in and asked me why he is not able to connect to our home wireless connection.
This was when I retrieved my hope that the problem is not in the phone. And it was not! My iPhone, my laptop were able to obtain a internet connection in contrast to my other laptop and my S3! I restarted the rooter and everything was ok! Everbody got their internet dose !
So, most probably it isn't you!
Also have wifi problem, except it tells me it's an authentication error. I cannot connect to the WiFi unless I stand right next to it. Can't connect to WiFi anywhere (if you think it's the router in my house), even though the device detects the router. Sent it back to Samsung.

Hey, I experienced the same problem. But in my case, I am able to connect to the AP, if I am using a static IP address in the SGS3 instead of DHCP. Same router, no settings changed there. Just configured a static IP.
Cheers,
Jaegermeister
Same problem
Tried everything still not working, took it back to samsung they said it's working fine any other device is connecting without a problem but the S3 wont (i have 15 S3 with this problem)
Thanks
Bring back the phones to Samsung!

I'm also frequently getting the "Network disabled. Poor Connection" message when at home. I have 2 wifi routers:
- Buffalo WHR G54S
- Draytek 2920n
If I turn wifi off/on on the S3 it sometimes resolves the issue, but not always. Sometimes after turning off/on it shows a status of "Connected"but there is no internet connectivity. If I then switch to the other router I can sometimes (but not always) connect successfully.
I'm running Checkrom v5.5, and have tried both the Perseus and Siyah kernels - both have this problem.

[Q] Mobile data not working after WiFi signal lost

Hi all,
bought for my wife Padfone S but when she leaves home WiFi, data does not automatically turn on.
If I turn off WiFi manually, data gets connected automatically, but if she just leave the range of WiFi with WiFi still on, but out of reach, the phone doesn't connect to 3G even if I'll turn WiFi off & on, data on & off - only what helps is restart of the phone - then connects to the mobile data without problem.
Phone is new, not rooted, stock ROM.
Shall I send to service?
Thanks for any tips.

My girlfriend and i both have this phone, her's had the same problem in one of the first software versions. Then a restart would help, but after the latest updates this problem doesn't occur anymore.

What software version you have?
I've bought the phone in East Asia and can't update any more. But played with the APN settings & actually it helped - the default settings was strange and now it works.

Data off (2G) on Wifi?

I want to be able to switch mobile data off, and go to 2G, automatically when I'm on wifi. I tried xposed's Smart Network, but that didn't work on MIUI. Any suggestions?
Well, I don't know if I understand correctly your question, but Android automatically turns cellular data off when you're connected to Wi-Fi.

I think it doesn't use data, but it's still on.
In and case, I want to go to switch to 2G automatically when I'm on wifi, and back to 4G when there's no wifi connected.
