rooting with stock? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

hey everyone, im looking to root just to be able to run a certin app i need. If i root can i still get stock OTA updates? I really dont want to put a custom rom or unstable rom on.

Yes you'll still get ota updates but you'll most likely lose root if you take the update. You can root on the most recent update though (nk2), just upgrade via Odin and flash ne6 (stock) kernel, root with towel root, then flash back the nk2 kernel, here's instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2909352

Normally the update will download if you are rooted, but when it tries to install it errors out. But I don't have a problem with that because I'd rather watch the update for a while to see what it does and if it has any issues. Then I can odin the update when I determine it looks like there are no issues and it doesn't add any additional restrictions I don't was to live with. At that point I use mobile odin to update and keep root at the same time.

Updating phone.

I got my THunderbolt on day 1, and rooted it when the instructions were first released for Mac users back at android central.
I wanna update to the latest update (software+radio?)that was just recently let out a week or two ago.
Anyway I could do this and retain root?

I think you could just do a battery pull trick instead of having to go through the adb thing and you should be able to retain root if u download one of the devs rom of the leak

What are you talking about?
All he has to do is download a rom which uses the GB leak as a base and flash it. This is just the base leak with root, probably what you are looking for. Read before you flash.

Here's my question - I'm running a stock Thunderbolt with the original software (not rooted), and I want to try the OTA update out. Has the OTA update been rooted for non-root users, as in, would I be able to root it afterwards, being as my phone is completely stock right now?
I don't want to be on GB, I want the most recent update that was let out over OTA.
The most recent update has issues, actually, far more than the Gingerbread leak. Random reboots are a very prevalent issue. If you aren't rooted, and you don't want to install a ROM and just install that software, simply check for an update under your settings menu.
If you are rooted, you need to look more into flashing a ROM, and what goes along with the process. Almost all ROM's released have root access, so that isn't an issue.

ALL roms have root access since you have to be rooted to flash a rom... and the Random reboots are only an issue with the newest ginergerbread radio and gingerbread roms becuase they are an ALPHA release and arent stable yet. if you want the latest software and radio without GB then do the first update from this list --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13093559&postcount=1 and install a custom rom that is based of the newest software update (1.13.605.7) such as das bamf 1.6.3. if you want a more stock look then install one closer to stock. heres a list for you to look around --> http://www.thunderboltforums.com/fo...-thunderbolt-roms-list-updated-5-16-11-a.html easiest way to install a rom is with rom manager from the market and install from sd card. hope this helps i remember struggling with this stuff so i know it can be frustrating.

Update available but doesn't install - Because of root?

I rooted my phone a few months back, purely for backing up purposes etc so I still have the stock firmware etc. I just checked for updates and it is saying there is a firmware update available. It downloads and goes through the install process but doesn't actually change anything, when I check for updates it informs me again that the update is there.
Is this because I have rooted my phone or is there another issue? Should I avoid installing updates when my phone is rooted? I'm not really fussed about CFW at the moment, I just like the root to have that little bit more access.
Thanks
If you install an OTA update, you will loose root.
You can check if its root or the update might not been downloaded correctly by using Kies with the USB cable.

Thanks,
I don't mind losing the root so much, as I guess I can just re-root it? What I'm finding strange is that the update just plain didn't do anything lol. Kernel version is the same, gingerbread version is the same and firmware version is the same.

[Q] Rooting/CWM interfere with OTA Updates ?

Hey guys,
I am not new to the rooting or CWM scene but I like to double check these things with different phone models just in case as I do not want an expensive brick, especially with the S3 as I am looking to get one of these bad boys.
My question is, If I root/Install CWM will this cause issues with OTA updates or updates through Samsung Kies ? Or once an Update is installed would I simply need to re-root and install CWM again ?
I was taking a look at this thread and it bought my question to mind: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
I would for now like to stick to the Stock Roms and just want to be aware of the consequences of having Root/CWM and Updating my phone.
Cheers guys.
If you root, your device status will show as "Modified," and you won't get OTA updates.
Not a big deal as long as XDA is up and running, IMO. You'll get update here faster than you'll get them OTA anyway in nearly all cases.

Ahh right, what about CWM ? As you say, even if I cannot Update OTA or through Kies I can use Odin. I guess I just need to find out about installing any updates with CWM installed, Though I should imagine nothing will happen as the stock recovery would be put back and I would simply have to install CWM again but any further info would be great
Thanks !

If you use desktop Odin to flash, you'll lose the custom recovery and be reverted to stock recovery. You'll likely need to relfash the recovery again as well as root, unless the ROM you flash via Odin is pre-rooted.
Mobile Odin will allow you to flash the tar file and keep root, recovery, etc. 99% of the time, I use mobile Odin for stock ROMs these days.

[Q] OTA after root

Hi everyone. Im real good with tech but i cant find anyone having asked...
I want to go buy the S4 and I will definitely root it (following the posted instructions on here) but before i do, will i be able to instal OTA updates after and if not, is there another way id be able to install updates? I used Voodoo rootkeeper on my tablet after rooting and the 1st ota went fine and kept root, the 2nd ota killed the root even while using Voodoo...
Please, any any all responses asap appreciated. I want to get the phone asap as i am tired of my rooted Bionic.
Thank all.

Just wait for a rooted stock ROM based on the OTA to be made by a dev. You never NEED to take an OTA.
Thanks but im not sure what you mean. I have no interest in loading custom roms nor over-screwing around with the phone. Do you mean wait for another root process or wait for a download for an ota update?
Thanks again
Im guessing you mean a rom will be released again after the ota is out with the ota integrated in it... That process makes me kind of nervous as i need my phone for work as well as personal and cant risk screwing up the phone or erasing data eta...
There is pretty much always someone that releases the stock ROM flashable in a custom recovery so you can have a rooted stock ROM. Look at the dev beanstownm106 ROM in the development section. It is basically the stock ROM rooted with some very minor tweaks, but flashable with a custom recovery like TWRP.
BUT...there is almost never anything you can't do with basically any ROM that you can do with the stock ROM. So you really don't need the stock ROM...some people just prefer it. For my old Thunderbolt, it was pretty well known that for a long time there was a custom ROM, very similar to the stock ROM, that was more stable than stock (SkyRaider Zeus).
Another BUT: if you need Good for work, prepare for a constant fight with root detection. And you will want to back up your data often. I have a BB for work that I leave untouched (its not mine).
One more thing...the Loki workaround has its advantages...the bootloader is still locked and untouched, so it would be pretty hard to brick the device because you can get back into download mode and use odin to flash back to factory.
Whats the loki workaround? Also, im dont want to be doing any kind of flashing... I just simply want to root the s4 (which i now have) and be able to run ota updates or if not, download the ota and install the update manually. And if i get an ota, if it will kill root, even if i run voodoo.
Please, if someone could, let us all know if ota wont run or will kill root on say the s3 or s4 and if downloadable updates are another option... without flashing anything or going to crazy.
Thanks again in advance.

Im still on Jellybean, Can I update and root?

Im still currently on jellybean, but I am rooted and the only reason that Im rooted is due to the only wifi tether app that works on my phone requires it. I would like to update to kitkat and have tried to update via odin but for some reason I have been getting a fail message when trying to flash. Is there a way to update to 4.4 and have my note 2 rooted?
Yes, no?
http://imran-ul-haq.blogspot.com/2015/03/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-note-2-i605.html
Is the process I use for rooting. I have had no issues getting root. Edit, you just have to get the sequence correct.
So i have to unroot then update to kit kat and then do this root?
