Im still currently on jellybean, but I am rooted and the only reason that Im rooted is due to the only wifi tether app that works on my phone requires it. I would like to update to kitkat and have tried to update via odin but for some reason I have been getting a fail message when trying to flash. Is there a way to update to 4.4 and have my note 2 rooted?
Yes, no?

Is the process I use for rooting. I have had no issues getting root. Edit, you just have to get the sequence correct.
So i have to unroot then update to kit kat and then do this root?

I loe this forum. I searched and found all kinds of threads with bits and pieces of the information I am looking for but here goes my question(s)...
I am on Android Version 2.3.6, Baseband Version I717UCLA1, Kernal Version 2.6.35.11 Build Number GINGERBREAD.UCLA1 and from what I believe I have done is I rooted my Note and stayed on the stock rom. I want to update to ICS and am curious regarding the best/easiest method?
1) Un-root, update to ICS via Kies, then root again?
2) Is there a way to just update to ICS without the process in number 1?
I am not really looking to flash roms. I am fine with the stock rom. I just need/want root for tethering.
Thank you for your help.
You're going to lose root when you update but it's just as easy to root ICS as it is GB.
Kies may also refuse to update unless you do so while the phone is in download mode.
I preferred flashing the ICS update via Odin. Smooth and painless.

Thank you for the reply. I am aware I will lose root when I update. I guess I can/will do a backup in CMR and TiBackup? When I update, then root, then get superuser, I should be able to log into and run Tibackup Pro to load my app data? I don't know...the process seems daunting as there is no direct threads detailing how to complete and update from the situation I am in.

Rooted Today
Rooted today and in ICS on my G note, I do not see the tethering apk. Only tethering provisions. I froze tethering provisions in Ti. Went to setting, more, tehtering and portable hotspot and every time I try to turn on Protable Wi-Fi hotspot I get a crash....black screen and an eventual msg that says unfortunately, setting has stopped. What can I do to get this working?
Thanks
hey everyone, im looking to root just to be able to run a certin app i need. If i root can i still get stock OTA updates? I really dont want to put a custom rom or unstable rom on.
Yes you'll still get ota updates but you'll most likely lose root if you take the update. You can root on the most recent update though (nk2), just upgrade via Odin and flash ne6 (stock) kernel, root with towel root, then flash back the nk2 kernel, here's instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2909352

Normally the update will download if you are rooted, but when it tries to install it errors out. But I don't have a problem with that because I'd rather watch the update for a while to see what it does and if it has any issues. Then I can odin the update when I determine it looks like there are no issues and it doesn't add any additional restrictions I don't was to live with. At that point I use mobile odin to update and keep root at the same time.
I had root access on 4.4.2, downloaded OTA1 update, failed to install OTA2. I used Samsung Kies to install OTA2 and now I am on 5.0.1 without root access.
My phone isn't fully functional at the moment, with some apps not working and some completely broken due to no root access.
Is there a way for me to gain root access while already on 5.0.1? I see these ways to have rooted 5.0.1 but that is when you phone is rooted 4.4.2.
Thanks.
Nope. No way to root 5.0.1 yet.

Bleh, that's what I thought when I was searching but I was hoping I had been missing something. My phone is pretty messed up at the moment too. Numbers on my lockscreen randomly turn to blocks.

Out of curiosity, since I'm in the same position... Can you flash Kit Kat firmware onto it with ODIN? Are you able to go back to a rooted 4.4.2?
No, no downgrading. A qFuse was blown, no way to go back. You can flash the stock 5.0.1 firmware with Odin to fix that though(the problems with the OP's phone)
Hi there. I just broke my s6 and so had to go back to my old s4, heh. I currently have a rooted OC1, and I was looking at the latest info on available root methods and see that the OF1 can be rooted using kingroot. My phone shows an OTA available but repeatedly fails when trying to update.
My question is, should I try to figure out what is causing the failure, update the "right" way, and then root with kingroot? Or should I just figure out another way to get the update, like I think the old way was to downgrade to OC1, root, then odin the OF1 update. Should I just do that?
This happens when you try to ota on a rom which has root or has been modified. Just dont update it doesnt add any features
Running latest Pixel Experience w/ root right now and was wondering about OTAs.
When updating, is there anything I need to do with root or can I just run the OTA normally and update?
Last time I ran an OTA update w/ root, my phone would restart randomly sometimes during usage and I couldn't figure out why so I reflashed everything and it hasn't happened since.
Leads me to asking whether updating while still rooted messed with the phone in some way. So yeah, do I need to unroot before running the OTA or do I unroot and then OTA and then reroot?
(Also, if I need to unroot, how do I do that? Have only ever rooted phones, never had to unroot one.)
