flashing Q - AT&T HTC One (M8)

hello everyone ! i just recently updated my firmware from 1.58.401.5 to 3.28.401.9
my question = is it o.k. to flash older ROMs. (actually one based off 1.54.401.5).
am new to htc and flashing guidelines. coming from samsung S3 for past 2 yrs.
p.s. also am unlocked , s-off , superCID .
thanks for any help/advice.

First off are you on an att device? Secondly not best solution as a firmware choice for the us variant of the m8. I would suggest flashing the us developer edition 3.28.1540.5 firmware and not a euro based one. I would also suggest using a based rom for us variant, many have had issues with connectivity using euro roms on att network. If not on att network outcome may be different. I dont know if flashing an older rom will have any impact with the newer firmware or not, many have had issue with mismatched firmware and wifi. Best answer is make a backup of current rom and try it.

Why would you want to do this? In addition to added features, there are important security updates. Reverting to software that is several generations old is generally not a great idea.
Although I also realize that there is the rare exception where someone misses a feature of an older ROM, or has a bug on the newer ROMs that they want to try to fix by reverting.

@Wonders_Never_Cease and @redpoint73 ; sorry for late reply. have been having 'issues' to say the least.
#1. yes am on att.
#2. had no idea was euro based firmware and rom. (brand new to htc/sense and still trying to get the numbering system. am coming from att samsung S3 for past two yrs.)
#3. tried to 're-update' firmware with 2.22.1540.4 (which i thought was 4.4.3) which went well. phone rebooted back to euro ROM. then proceeded to update to 3.28.1540.5 (4.4.4) and when phone finished updating i pressed power to reboot and screen went white with htc logo and stuck. many many button presses/combos later (REALLY not knowing my device well enough) i can get to a) white screen with htc logo
b) bootloader screen (and here is where i think i really messed up , because instead of power off or fastboot or reboot ; i got in hurry and hit factory reset !).
c) have twice gotten to black screen with red triangle , exclamation mark in middle.
definitely not a good sign.
my only computer access is an old mac POS laptop (nothing against mac's ; just this one !) have re-activated my old S3 , which is what i'm typing on , and was thinking (?) should i download the original 1.58.502.1 factory everything , put it on root of extSD rename to 0p6bimg.zip and see if it will update. or try Wonders_Never_Cease's update file. (was stuck in a loop cause phone wouldnt reboot fully and each time i went back to bootloader it immediately detected new firmware zip and do its thing.). took ext.SD card out , put in old phone and deleted via es fileexplorer.
reason for older ROM was it looked to be 'lighter'. i dont care for bloatware , which was the original motivation for climbing mt.odin and receiving the blessing of root in the first place!
sorry for long post , just trying to give all info. (that i can remeber-will take freakin notes from now on). to possibly get informed advice/direction.
thank you for your time in reading this and any help you could pass along.

You want the lowest bloat free rom, download 3.28.1540.5 ruu and run it in fastbootusb mode...then youll have updatea from htx and not any carrier.

If you updated the firmware by WNC's thread (link below), you didn't follow the instructions. Red triangle is stock recovery, which flashing firmware will install (removing custom recovery). The instructions clearly state how to return to TWRP recovery:

Amount of bloatware isn't a function of how old a ROM is. Its more a function of the carrier/region. Any bloatware can be frozen or removed with root anyway. So its more important to have the security updates and other updates of current OS software; and being on obsolete Android versions is usually not a great idea.
Or just flash WNC's debloated ROM included in the link above. This not only puts you on the most up-to-date and best OS software to run on AT&T, but is already very debloated.

Whoa way over my head!! TP Verizon Rom!

OK i have done some searching and this sounds like a good one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=461524
Then i want to make shure i can get it back to the original rom i have right now so in case it breaks. this it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427507&highlight=dump
Then do you guys know if in this rom it already has gps unlocked or do i have to do the bored thing? http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49933
Then this is my first time doing this. is there anything else i am missing?
First, have you unlocked your phone? This is a must!!
Second, you do have to follow the steps from bored to unlock the GPS.
Third, check out bored's ROMs and kitchens on this forum. Updated today!!
Also, you can revert back to the original ROM and re-lock your phone if neccasary. So no worries. Also, for better signal strength you can also try a new radio (sticky on ppcgeeks). May not help but if you have weak service now, these could give you more bars and extend your battery life.
OH, and if your still on the stock ROM....WOW. You are about to LOVE your phone!! Its like a different phone with a custom ROM, SOOOO much faster

I am not too familiar with XDA myself but PPCGeeks I would say is a better resource for your Verizon TP. I will post a few links that answer every one of your questions but you'll have to do a little reading yourself......
Unlocking and Relocking for Warranty Repair
Guide To Flashing
lllbored GPS Fix (very easy to do and includes the cab to revert if necessary)
Thread About RELOCKING for Warranty
In my Opinion these are all very easy things to accomplish as long as you made sure you READ the instructions throughly before attempting. Good Luck!
If i have a data connection will that get charged like double when i reastivate my phone? and were and how would i get my rom back to stock?

Stock CDMA ROMS
Not sure why you would think your Data plan would double???? I havent had any issues with my data plan changing except when buying a new device and they "assume" you want the Enterprise plan. As long as you made sure Verizon set you up on the $29.99 plan in the first place then it shouldnt change to my knowledge....... DONT CALL VERIZON AND TELL THEM THAT YOU UNLOCKED/FLASHED YOUR PHONE , lol.
Your data plan will be fine. Just dont do a lot of tethering if your plan isnt unlimited. Data usage will be the same as before though

Little history about that , bout 6 months ago I was helping someone in the CrackBerry forums flash a leaked beta on their Curve , they got confused , called Verizon for help flashing and of course were told that they had Violated customer agreements and the device warranty and how they were going to burn in hell for sinning against Verizon. This person then comes back to the forums furious at everybody that had been trying to help because WE had "voided" their warranty. Just wanted to make sure you werent going to do the same and be mad at me
That ROM is the leaked SHIP Rom that comes on the Verizon TP. Double check your Settings/System/Device Information if your not sure. Like I said in the post I linked above ,I have unlocked , flashed (MANY TIMES) and relocked and flashed the Verizon leaked rom so I could send it back and had NO issues whatsoever.
EDIT : Flashing a new rom is just as easy as unlocking was. Which ROM have you chosen for your first one??

all right and then when i am unlocking you get the screen on your computer with a picture of the touch pro and it has you accept the agreements. i have not done this yet but what does that do because it does not seem like that is the unlocker.
Damn this seems harder then putting custom firmware on a psp wich i did with ease.

4.Place phone in bootloader mode (power button while holding volume down button)
5.open the ROMUpdateUtility.exe
6.follow the RUU on screen instructions from there
Oh and i just for fun did the power and down volume key and i went to the 3 color thing and it says security unlocked and i dont think i unlocked it yet......

That is dependant on which ROM you choose......... which rom did you choose?
Most roms are alot easier than that now.
EDIT** If it says .35 cmonex in bootloader then it IS unlocked. Nothing against XDA but for your CDMA Touch Pro you reallly need to be over at PPCGeeks for this. That Crossler post you linked to hasnt been updated for 3 months now. Crosslers Kitchen on PPCGeeks was updated yesterday , just a thought

[Q] 2.2.1 - complications on downgrade and root.

Phone: LG P500h - ANDROID v 2.2.1 buildnumber FRG83.
Country: Brazil
Anyway, what I know is that i have to downgrade it to 2.2 in order to be able to root. I've looked through a bunch of tutorials on a bunch of websites but there are a few questions i have about the process that isn't answered anywhere i've looked.
Apparently downgrading requires me to get a stock ROM from LG, there is a topic here for that but it does not have the right ROM for my country, i tried a couple codes but they all got me 404.
Can I just flash any standard ROM from, US maybe, will it work?
And if yes, how do I flash it? Apparently you can do that by booting into recovery mode, but to get there you need it to be rooted which I can't do.
I've read about KDZ and downloaded that but... it crashes a lot in my PC (whenever i try the Read Device) it gives me error and closes the program (windows program not responding dialog).
I'm afraid it might crash in the middle of it if i try flashing and that would brick my device.
Is there a simple way to flash a new ROM? Is that the first thing I have to do in order to get a custom ROM say Ubuntdroid? It says I need a new recovery... but for that I need to downgrade first? It's a lot to do... and I don't really get the order in which I should do it all in...
Can somebody post me a little "do this, then do that, then finally do that" so that I can understand it all finally?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for long post, was trying to be as informative as possible.
This shows what happens when I try reading the phone on KDZ... also a little part showing that I got my device to be recognized by windows...
also disabled the LGE modem on device manager, read that if I don't it'll get bricked.
Well it won't let me link the image so... just paste the name together.
www

/1.jpg
1. Find a suitable v2.2 stock ROM for flashing (link)
2. Use KDZ to flash it (I am not aware of another tool capable of doing that). Try doing that on a PC running Windows XP (important - that's where you're stuck now and I guess you're using Windows 7).
3. Root your phone - search for "z4root" on Market, install it.
4. Install Custom recovery, which will replace your current (stock) recovery mode (link - you may need to create an account on another forum in order to download).
5. Using Custom recovery you can now install any custom ROM and create nandroid backups to restore your phone to a certain (working) state.
You will have to use KDZ again if you ever want to flash a stock ROM, also losing the custom recovery. But you will have no reason to do that, except if you need to take your phone to some warranty repairs.
Good luck!
NEW PROBLEM: About step 1... i finally found a way to get my country's rom, but... it's.. the same thats on my device right now, it says V10a_02 and thats the same on my phone (the kdz read phone tells me that) so... won't I just be flashing the same 2.2.1 again?
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/swdata/WEBSW/LGP500H/ABRABK/V10A_02/V10A_02.kdz <---- the rom the topic tells me to get.
How do I know what version of android is in that rom? and if i can't, can you link me to a rom that does?
I found one from another country that the guy said is 2.2... but... will it work if i flash that one? does it HAVE to be for my country? also my model is p500h (the h) is it different from the p500 (different as in flashing p500 without h roms on it will kill it?)
As for flashing it...
I think maybe a computer with win xp will do the trick for kdz.
i've found this post today:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944881
is it better to use that than kdz? theres no replies on topic saying "hey it worked" so i'm a little worried, but apart from a few errors it seems to work on my win 7....
i guess the reply would be "i only know kdz, do it with kdz" but i thought i might ask...
Indeed, I have not tried that method and therefore I can't recommend it. At least KDZ is successfully tested. If you are patient enough to wait for some replies either here or in that topic, you may find out if it works. I would recommend it only if you have no other choice, like if you're unable to try KDZ on an XP machine.
In the mean time, I remembered that a newer version of Custom recovery is available (v1.2) - here. But you still need to download a file and read the tutorial from that other forum I mentioned in the previous post.
what about the first part of the post? i think i might have added that after you replied i don't know... asking about the rom i found if it isn't the same i have on my phone. and asking if i can just add another country's one...

First backup your data, then download a factory ROM, it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version. Make sure that it's 2.2 and not 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. Follow all the below steps without skippin any, no matter how simple or stupid they are.
Link for shipped ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865479
Now download KDZ updater and uncompress it
http://www.4shared.com/file/UleS4dP3/KDZ_FW_UPD_EN.html
Install msxml.msi from the uncompressed directory
Charge your battery to almost full state (I'm not sure, but it can be reason if phone doesn't start)
Turn phone off somehow (remove battery etc.)
Install drivers properly
Get rid of all usb drivers like Nokia, microsoft visual ++ run time environments
Install the LG drivers by selecting the update manager from the lg site
Disable LGE Virtual Modem. In your Windows operating system, go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Modems > Right click on LGE Virtual Modem and click Disable.
Press and keep pressed "Volume up"+"Return" and connect USB cable to phone
Yellow screen with text emergency mode should appeared
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe (Has administrator).
Select Type : 3GQCT (I have one report that CDMA mod works too)
Select PhoneMode : DIAG (in case of fail try EMERGENCY, and as last chance use CS_EMERGENCY)
I Recommend do not switch phone off. There was some people, which done it and after they was not be able to turn it on again. If flashing failed, just select some another mode and try it again, again, try shake/connect disconnect, again, again....
In KDZ file : Choose the ROM file you downloaded in the first step
Press Launch software update
Shake the handset (I know, it sounds ... strange, but it helps for ones, so... why don't try it?) UPDATE: Read some quotes on bottom.
Now Root it via Z4root - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
Then install custom recovery - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844483
Then download n flash any ROM of your choice, I wud sugget install Void or LOL.
Edit :- By the time I replied, many have already replied. Anyways you can check my reply too :-D
Mithun.
"it doesn't matter which version u download, what matters is the version."
does that mean it doesn't matter what country or operator the rom is for, as long as it is android version 2.2?
i have one from portugal (not my country) and that one is made for P500 mine is P500H... if that makes a difference i don't know, but i do know that rom is android 2.2. can i flash that one?
i also have one that i got from that topic following the instructions of putting my serial number, it linked me to a rom V10A_02... on KDZ when i try to read my device it says i have V10A_02 too. isn't that the same one i have now? with android 2.2.1? if it is it's very pointless to flash the same rom already in it.
any way to check?
because that is my last doubt ;p

As far as my knowledge goes, the LG P500h you have is the same phone as the P500, only branded for Telus. The hardware should be identical, therefore you may use any ROM designed for the P500 family.
The only thing you may miss if you install a ROM not customized for a Brasil (or South America) network operator is the internet acces point name, thus rendering your phone unable to acces the internet trough its data service connection, but only trough WiFi. Nevertheless, the phone's APN can be configured manually, all you need are the correct settings from your mobile operator and you're good to go.
Ok since you guys told me i can go ahead and flash any country ROM i just did and now my device burst into flames and then the flames consumed my apartment.
ok, not. it worked too well actually, i did the kdz procedure on my win 7 anyway, despite the errors when reading device info, and it took like, 1 minute, rebooted, took like 2 minutes on the android screen then it came back, with all my data still there... i thought it didn't do anything but... its now version 2.2
i tried z4root, worked ... got the superuser app and.... i'm happy ^^ thaaaanks!
anyway about the custom recovery thing..
i'm going to install the one in that post you gave me...
but i read something about the best one being clockwork something...
shouldn't i go ahead and install that one?
or can i do everything i need with this one you guys linked?

Glad that it worked Install the Amon_RA's recovery!!! Many ROM's for OO won't support clock work I suppose. Amon RA's recovery is neat, I've been using that from the time I had an HTC tattoo.

You can do anything you need with ThunderG. Now that version 1.2 supports backup and restore of ext4 partitons (a feature you don't need if you don't plan on installing a custom ROM... but you will, eventually ), it is complete.
Moreover, in ClockworkMod's first topic says: "This recovery will not allow you to flash every ZIP file". ThunderG does, if you choose to allow flashing of unsigned zip files. Sometimes this is useful.
Peeeeeerfect
Recovery installed, LOL ROM installed, all fast smooth and error-free.
no more screen touch lag, it's soooooo much faster now, overclocked, i have yet to test my emulators but i can only guess they're gonna be at least 150% better lol.
thank you all very much for taking the time to help me ^^
ONE LAST QUESTION: I PLAN ON BUYING A NEW SD CARD, JUST PLUG IT IN AND IT'LL FORMAT THEN CREATE THE NEEDED FILES THEN I INSTALL STUFF BACK ON IT, SIMPLE AS THAT?
Simple as that =D
Although there are some criteria with the sd card or you'll get unmounting problems.
Use a class 4 or higher card
format with fat32
I've never officially tried this method but its apparently supposed to help
allocation unit size: 64kb when you're formatting

I'm just guessing this is a case of autocorrect, and you mean "custom ROM" and not "art room"?
How did the custom ROM get on your phone, did you buy it that way or did someone do it for you?
The update won't install with a custom ROM, its true (at least if any system files have been altered, which is usually the case). Also, it won't install with a custom recovery. Might even send you into a bootloop and render the phone unusable.
If you want to return to a stock condition and get the update, you can either read up and learn, or run the RUU to return to stock (bootloader must be locked or you need S-off). In either case, we can help you, but need specifics on how you want to approach it.

oh the lousy autocorrect got me.
I have no idea what im doing lol, im following a tut to install revolution hd rom and so far everything is working perfect lets see what happens after system reboot.
Can I unroot and relock bootloader after custom rom install done ?
Update: restoring old content phone seems faster with better signal, but before custom rom it had 4g signal now seems only 3g
Now that sucks boomsound enable/disbale in settings is gone!
So is extreme power saving gone from status bar
also 4g signal
Signal will not show 4g or 4glte like AT&T [email protected] [email protected]
You could relock and unroot, but then no reason to flash a custom rom.
Those two settings are in settings. And on the m8 443 euro builds some are reporting lesser [email protected]
There are AT&T ROM's available that are tailored to us AT&T/GSM networks

Just use this guide to flash the ruu for 4.4.3. It only works on att m8. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE DIRECTIONS! You just need to relock your boot loader if you are not s-off

This is the exact reason I highly discourage following step-by-step tutorials; and/or using toolkits. You are modding the phone with apparently very little understanding of what you are actually doing. Not only is this very risky, as it might result in damage to you phone. But it also leaves you completely unequipped to handle any problems.
My suggestion is to spend a few hours reading the basic information that the folks here have taken the time to compile. This isn't "techie" stuff, this is the basic information and concepts that should be understood before doing any modding of the phone. Quite simply IMO if you don't understand the basics, you have no business rooting/modding the phone.

Again, you need to learn and research more before doing anything. This is another perfect example. Factory reset doesn't do anything to the ROM. All it does is wipe the user data partition, and isn't going to help your case in any way. And trying to make up your own solutions is not a good idea (but at least you thought to ask before trying it).
If the intent is to simply be on the latest 2.23 stock software, just run the RUU. You will need to relock the bootloader before RUU if you are s-on. Also, back up any personal data, as user data will be wiped by RUU.

Not enough info. What exactly does the error say?
S-on or S-off. Did you relock the bootloader?
Any response if you type (using adb):
adb devices
Improper HTC/ADB drivers or using Microsoft USB 3.0 drivers on USB 3 port on Windows 8.x instead of Intel USB drivers would be my first two guess. The ladder of the two issues would be most likely scenario if RUU communicates with device while booted into Android OS but fails to connect when the device is in fastboot/boot loader mode.

I believe I royally screwed up my attempt to Root

Hey friends, I am very new to the rooting scene. I have a at&t htc m8 and i made the mistake of trying to root the fast and easy way. I followed a guide by a user names Unlocker. I would post the link but am unable to at this current time because i am new here
That has it's readers use hasoon2000's all in one toolkit. Well I think I screwed up in that process. when my phone was off and charging , the screen would briefly flash the TWRP ui with their lock screen. So naturally I freaked out tried my best to unroot the damn thing by following a guide created by the same guy after he got many complaints of issues
Naturally I had problems with this aswell. Now where i'm at, at this current moment is
**tampered** ***unlocked**
I successfully (i think) removed super su and did my best to get back to stock firmware. well I failed at that aswell. I still have TWRP on my phone and managed to get security turned back on.
What I am asking is for any references or maybe even some fresh help on how i can either get my phone back to stock firmware so i can take the OTA updates and be on my merry way or maybe reccomend a custom rom I can use that has the new lolipop software.
Now i was looking to update my TWRP but I am unable to locate an AT&T verison. I see sprint , verizon, and GSM. I feel pretty helpless right now but if i can get some instruction I know I will be able to figure this out.
I'm still really new to this also, but I'll try my best (just take everything I say w/ a grain of salt...):

Do you mean that you'd successfully done whatever you were doing and this was happening in normal use? AFAIK it is normal for the the screen to power off during long-running TWRP actions, and power button wakes it up.

Which firmware do you have on it now? Do you have ADB installed? If so, it might be helpful if you post the output of the command
Code:
fastboot getvar all
. If not, I think you'll need ADB and fastboot to help recover.

AT&T uses GSM. The GSM version should be correct. Depending on the firmware you have installed, specific versions of twrp may not work. In my case, twrp 2.8.4.0 wouldn't work on AT&T's stock 4.4.2 firmware, but would on the 4.4.4 firmware.
EDIT: Did you make a TWRP backup before attempting these changes? Depending on the state of your firmware, restoring that might be enough to fix things.
AT&T Stock 4.4.4 RUU
This should solve your problem, if you can achieve s-off again:
AT&T Stock 4.4.4 RUU

All the panic is for nothing. Its normal for the TWRP screen to appear for a brief moment when the device is powered off, and you connect the charger. At least on older versions of TWPR (and the version installed by Hasoon's toolkit is quite old).

The TWRP version you want is the GSM. All versions of the M8 are essentially the same (and considered "GSM") except for the CDMA (Sprint & Verizon) and dual SIM variants.

What the OP is describing was a known bug, and happened when outside of recovery and while the phone was powered off (and while connecting the charger).
Wow thank you for fast responses!
So from my understanding I have a outdated TWRP version. I suppose I need to read up on how to update this and also how to flash a new rom. I only rooted my phone so I could pair up my ps3 controller to my phone so I can play games on it. I regret doing it now to be honest because I have modded my 3ds to play the same games i was using on my phone
I would love to be on the lolipop update that launched yesterday I believe. Should I stick to a rooted rom or just flash a stock version? Can anyone recommend a good lolipop root that has some tweaks for battery life and overall performance?

Just get the latest version of TWRP from their website. As you are asking what version (CDMA vs. GSM) it sounds like you are already getting there.
It sounds like you have the version of TWRP that was installed by the toolkit. That version is many months old. But its a minor bug, anyway. How often do you charge the phone with it powered off, anyway. I also don't think you can do anything in TWRP in this condition (if a security risk is your concern). The TWRP appears for a split second, and that's it.

Lollipop didn't launch for AT&T, its just a long-delayed 4.4.4 update for us. To update to 4.4.4, either return to stock ROM and stock recovery to get the OTA, or relock the bootloader and run the official RUU.
Lollipop (5.0) started to roll out for some Euro CIDs, and has been out for US Dev Edition for a while. But you can't get to Sense Lollipop unless you s-off (or until AT&T releases it).

How to manually get nougat?

Hey XDA, I haven't been on here since my Samsung S2 years ago. I picked up a new moto Z for daydream, (amazon 499 special, 64 gb luna grey unlocked, retus software, 650-03). I bought it from the american amazon, and I am in canada. I popped in my Sasktel sim card and it works perfectly.
My questions are:
How do I manually flash nougat?
If I flash to the rogers 45 firmware, will I still be able to use my Sasktel sim?
How long until nougat comes out regardless? Should I just wait?
If I do flash to this "rogers 45 nougat", can I go back to my "vanilla" stock later? ( i just want daydream now, i bought the headset already. then when my area gets nougat, ill flash back to my phones nougat.. or does it make a difference?)
Sorry for the really random questions. I couldn't find the answers to these on the forums or on google. (reddit has been saying just wait, and don't flash)
You can try this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/how-to/easy-flash-to-nougat-tutorial-unlocked-t3514245 - I had success flashing the Rogers 45 firmware (am on retca software channel) but for the life of me couldn't get the Nougat update to install. I'm on Telus and had no issues with my SIM card working after I flashed to the Rogers 45. Flashed back to the retca official firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/development/moto-z-official-firmware-downloads-t3449837) this morning with no problems.

Going to start a new thread so as not to hijack this one
I'll try to give you some "sparse" answers...
- Rogers is a "not carrier locked" software so, no problem with any sim... to be honest it hasn't any special at all!
It's preferred only because between the "leaked" software versions it is the only leaked in .45 and not in .17 subversion... and a .45 is needed for Nougat OTA to apply.
If you are already on a .45 I don't think you really need to flash Roger to have the sideload OTA to apply...
- if you have your full software version on pc to flash in case, yes, you can come back from rogers BUT *only* until you are still on MM.
On this phone Nougat OTA updates a LOT of things (bootloader, baseband, perhaps something on GPT too...) and is *NOT* reversible. Or, at least, not in an easy (as safe...) way... Some have poked with it and.... we have had first bricks... (quite hard ones...).
So?
So I would eventually try in another way.
DISCLAIMER: this isn't tested first hand by me. Some other ( @erfanoabdi) in chat with me reported that it worked for him, but I've to warn that as ALL hacking & tweaking operations something could go wrong (read: bootloop & eventually soft bricks... I don't think hard bricks anyway, BUT this only my-own-opinion, ok? )
Said that... my idea is making things simpler. More... many people are reporting issues with some of the upgraded parts on Nougat (wifi, Bluetooth, etc...) AND upgraded bootloader (and GPT?) are main problems if we want to return to MM, so... let's limit the upgrade to only what's really needed...
Steps should be:
- unlock bootloader
- Flash TWRP in fastboot/fastload mode
- take a *FULL* backup of *ALL* partitions by TWRP (yes, system image too!!) and put it in a safe place (no, your phone or microSD is *not* a safe place...)
- download full Nougat retmx firmware (the only N available at moment...)
- go in fastboot/fastload mode and flash *only* boot.img and system.img using mfastload commands
- enter directly in TWRP (don't boot!) and flash patch for unencrypted kernel
- wipe cache, dalvik and *format* data (yes, format, not only wipe it...). WARNING: this will erase all the contents of your internal storage memory, so take a backup before...
- Reboot...
It should boot fine on Nougat... :fingers-crossed:
(and mantaining your ret channel, not changing it to retmx probably...)
After eventually we'll talk about root...
This way it should be ready to return to MM if needed using the same procedure (changing only boot.img and system.img with MM ones...).
Obviously this is a raw description of procedures... it is written considering that you have good knowledge of the matter and you know how to install and use drivers, adb & fastboot commands, TWRP and so on...
For more info or doubts... ask @erfanoabdi

Wow! Thank you for the response! This answered pretty much all of my questions, but also sparked a few more. The Moto Z was a pretty big purchase for me so I am in no hurry to lose functionality. A lot of people are using translators on here, so I'll be simple (sorry if it comes off as blunt or rude, typing with translators in mind)
I want to stay on android 7. Downgrading to 6.0 is not a worry for me.
I want to get future updates from my carrier. (official android/moto updates and security patches. I want to be able to use the "Google Tango" mod, if it comes out)
I want to be able to use the projector mod and daydream.
I do not plan on rooting my phone (maybe later), and I do not want to unlock my bootloader.
Will the retmx nougat be different then the copy of nougat I would get from retus?
Finally, is there any benefit to waiting for the OTA? Or am I getting the exact same copy of nougat on XDA, that I would in three weeks from OTA? I already bought the daydream headset, am I waiting for nothing?
*two more questions I guess*
Do I need a SD card?
do I need to unlock my bootloader to do this upgrade?

Sorry for all the questions. I have looked all over XDA and haven't been able to find an answer (reddit, and google too :/). I am hoping that other people will be able to read this, and have their questions answered as well.
Again, thank you. You guys are really smart.

Another issue I'm running into is that I unlocked it and for the life of me I can't seem to get the phone locked again. Minor issue but that "your phone is unlocked/untrustworthy" message when you boot up is annoying

Awesome, so I would probably want to take note of my retus (not retca, because I bought mine from the american amazon, right?). Do I need to unlock my bootloader to get regular android 7? or did you root as well as upgrade?
Thank you for the response.

Yup, you'll want the retus firmware I would think. I'm not sure if you have to unlock your bootloader, I did only because I was having issues with the Nougat update and thought that might be why but it didn't make a difference. I did get the Nougat update to install this morning though, tried it on another computer (stupid ADB). I did not root though, just unocked my bootloader and did the Rogers flash then the Noughat sideload.
I'd try it without unlocking the bootloader, if you get an error saying "can't read file <###>" when trying to adb sideload the Nougat update, try different ADB drivers or a different computer first before unlocking it. The couple people I know that have chimed in say they're unlocked as well but haven't indicated whether you need to be or not.
Based on your expressed needs... I'll just wait your OTA. Nothing more. It's only a matter of weeks anyway...
Sorry for being a newb and asking here but I'm finding it difficult to get my head around this.
I was originally on MM and upgraded to Nougat on unlocked I international Moto Z.
I then decided to install TWRP, root and try a new ROM. If I want to go back to stock Nougat can't it just be a case of flashing the Nougat update I have download on my computer through ODIN or is it going to be a little more complex than that?
Thanks for any help

Ok, I'll try it without unlocking the bootloader and let you know what happens. Is your new version of nougat working properly (unrooted?)? Is there a difference between the nougat I am going to flash, and the OTA i'll get in a few weeks? (If you say there is no difference, I'll flash it ASAP without unlocking boot loader and let you know. Working daydream, playstore, and moto mods right?)
Again, thank you for helping a noob like me out.

Seems to be working properly, at least from what I remember of Nougat on my 6P. I've had not force closes or other issues. I haven't tried Daydream apps out yet, but they did install fine (which they wouldn't under Marshmallow - got the "not compatible with your device" message). Play Store works fine, Incipio Battery Moto Mod works fine, haven't tested the others yet.
As far as what's different between this version and the OTA in a few weeks, I have no clue - but from what I gather this is a stock Nougat pulled from a device that got the OTA (don't quote me on that though hah). As for a few weeks, where are you hearing that? Can't get an answer out of Telus at all here and am wondering if maybe they're working on pushing it out as 7.1.x instead of 7.0. Who knows...
Let me know how it goes without unlocking the boot loader, having a ***** of a time trying to get it relocked lol (not the end of the world though).

Hey so I got it onto 7.0 finally. I ended up unlocking my bootloader. I didn't try without it, I read somewhere that it could cause a soft brick. Just wanted to say thanks to you guys that helped and Prfndhatrdofman (if he reads this) for his guide.
PS
holy ****ing ****. **** adb. **** android studio. **** drivers. And ****ing .zip extentions (took me like 30 minutes to put .zip on the end of Blur_Version...zip. Yes, I am an idiot).
Telus appears to have finally updated their update page for moto z nougat. Tentative date of December 19.
