RootCloak and TiBu Freezing - What apps are "safe" - Verizon LG G3

I've recently reverted and rooted my VZW G3 (loving it) and I am a bit paranoid as I've received a couple calls from Verizon Client Services. I have many VZW apps disabled or frozen via Titanium Backup and I'm wondering if they are detecting this and calling to call me out on having root.
So, I've since installed the Xposed module RootCloak and went through and added all the LG and VZW apps on my phone. I'm wondering if someone knows what apps must have root hidden from them via RootCloak and what apps are safe to freeze (or delete from the phone)? Would I be better off letting some/all the VZW apps run with root hidden from them so they don't think anything is wrong? Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me? Thanks.

Did you just recently get the phone? Maybe they are calling back for a survey? I know I've received a call or two, especially since I spoke with a customer service rep.
I also went and picked my phone up in the store and got a text the next from the manager, asking about my experience at the store and that they are there to help with any questions I may have.
I am rooted, and haven't had any calls or anything, so I think you should be okay. I'm assuming you never answered the calls when you saw who it was coming from. They probably just want to see how you like your new phone.

I just didn't know if they had bits in their bloatware that set off alarms when they are disabled or detected something fishy.
I was really ready to jump the Verizon ship and go off to T-Mobile or ATT - I stuck with my Galaxy Nexus on VZW for over 3 years because I wanted to have the freedom to have control over my own phone. The fact that the G3 was rootable (and free on Black Friday) made my decision to sign on for 2 more years. I just don't want anything messed up or have them know I'm rooted in case something does go wrong with the phone.
So even if it's paranoia it would be great if we had a list of apps that are safe to delete/freeze.

I read that as well, but we're still not completely sure about it. But, any time I ever called support for a phone (which as rare) or Verizon for support with a phone, I always returned it back to stock, unrooted before doing anything.
In fact, it appears from other posts and confirmation from the OP that he run the My VZW app and it asked for root permissions. I believe that's how they knew. Otherwise, they don't scan your phones, so I think you're safe.
I've been rooted ever since I got my first Android phone over 4 years and never once has VZW called me to say "Hey your phone is rooted. Your warranty is voided now."
They may be "Big Red" but I don't think they're "Big Brother".

willl verizon know?

ok about to root and rom. will verizon know if i call them for service questions? what i mean is, i suppose for a tech support call they can do over-the-phone diagnostics. right? if i call for tech support are they able to determine i am rooted and rommed through their diagnostics?
would i need to return to stock prior to making a tech support call to verizon?

I'm not sure why you'd call Verizon for diagnostics on a device that's not running their software anymore. I'd think talking to the dev would make more sense. I suppose the could tell, but care? Probably not. I told the manager where I got mine that I intended to root it as soon as I got home shd that my old Incredible was already rooted. His only question was how much better the battery life gets.
They will try to help you for sure but they may no be able to since you do not have stock. They can not look up your phone info on their end but they may ask you for info like software or info about the phone from about phone that could give it away. Honestly you're probably better off posting your issue on this forum and having XDA help.
They wouldn't be too helpful not because you rooted but because you have a different piece of software on your phone.
It'd be like calling Microsoft because your copy of Ubuntu is acting up.

I don't think they can see what software you are using, but I do believe they may be able to see your radio version.
So what about if i pay my bill with the My Verizon app and the thunderbolt ( which they know i have) is not yet supported by them? Not that i care but id think that be a huge red flag lol

Anyone can google "My Verizon.apk Thunderbolt", download it, and put it on their phones. Even non rooted fellas. So no, this should not throw up any red flags other than you are using a modded application.

I did this a week ago, my TB lost 3G completely at the house and 4G only works in PHX. It just happens the wife's D1 had no 3G so I called and we went through some settings on the phone and they checked the IMEI number etc. Found out the following day after talking to several Verizon people that the issue was the SIM card on the phone so I took it in and they replaced it and that fixed it.
I was rooted when I called, I went back to stock before taking it in and replacing the SIM card. They knew nothing at all.
It would be wise to just find help elsewhere. I find that online support is better than verizons anyways
I am an AT&T tech rep, so I can only speak for here. Bu universally most of us, despite carrier, that know what they are doing will answer the same from what I've found.
When someone walks into the device support center with an obviously rooted I won't exchange it for them. I will help them, find answers, and tell them how to fix it. I will also explain any known problems, or past problems, I know about with various roms. But I won't exchange the phone. And it's not to be mean. But often times when a person does come in with a rooted phone the issue they are experiencing is with the radio they flashed or the rom they are using. I see this a lot with the Inspire as is.
If I deem it to be an actual hardware issue and I can very the rom is not the issue then I will tell them how to take the phone back to stock so I can exchange it. For the Inspire I keep a handy sd card with the stock image there that I can flash it back right away.
If I know a phone has been rooted and the person brings it back to me with it flashed back to stock, I will exchange it without a problem. The phone is still under warranty and the warranty does explain in most products that not current software alterations exist (Ie: rooting, clockwork mod, unlock boot loader). If it's back to stock then warranty guidelines are meet.
Now with that being said, I have physical access to the device. Over the phone, the only way they would really be able to know is if they asked the software version, baseband version, kernel version, etc... and knew what they were off hand. Things like that. They can't magically peer into your phone over the air to see what's going on with it. That's the reason for their little script techs over the phone have to run through.
Ultimately, the advice mentioned above about asking the dev or the rom thread is the best you'll get. Most times this is your best place to look after a custom rom has been flashed. If a problem is deemed hardware and not software and you have to have it exchanged, flash back to stock and take it in. No tech rep will care if it was flashed back to stock (unless they are having a really miserable day and can prove it's rooted. but that's few and far between and not specific to any company).

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note II and enjoyed it for 20 days before I saw it auto-updating and I stopped it mid-stream. Then I let it (where it still remains) in Airplane mode.
I learned since that if the update from auto-update is done, 4.3's bootloader is no longer available and it can no longer be restored to 4.1.2.
I am learning terms and procedures to the best of my novice abilities, but I am still confused on how and IF I can keep my 'download-in-progess' GNII that is still 4.1.2 at 4.1.2.
Verizon and Samsung say absolutely not as you probably know and that it would be a forced installation and factory reset now or afterwards = 4.3.
SO , my question is:
is there a master link for this procedure (and a best ROM?!)

To stop the update you need to freeze an app called SDM 1.0. You will need to be rooted to do that. I guess you need to decide what direction you want to go in. If you want to unlock and flash roms then you need to do that now, before it updates. If you don't want to do that you can update and stay stock. Just be aware that if you update to 4.3 there is no going back. You can root 4.3 but you cannot unlock the bootloader.

That is false. Verizon customer service cannot scan your phone. They do not know if you are rooted. Even if they did, they are not going to cancel your service. They want your monthly payment. If all of us on here have rooted several phones and still have service, don't you think that info you found is false? And if you do believe it to be true, why worry about taking the 4.3 OTA?

If you really think that you will want to root your device eventually then now is the time to do it so you can update when you would like to. Adam Outlet has a step by step method that sounds scaryer than it is, just read throughly and you'll be fine. Good luck in which ever way you decide. :thumbup:

[Q] System State "Modified"

Okay so I was browsing my phone and happened to run across the System state saying "Modified"
The issue I am having is I have never even downloaded a rooting app. The only thing close to root I have used is called Helium, which does not require root, but it can backup/restore apps+data.
I am slightly worried that if I have to send my phone in for some reason they will see this and say I have messed with the system, although I have not in the first place.
Has anyone else encountered this random issue? Other than that this phone is quite a good phone and I'm pleased with it greatly.

Let me grab a non-rooted G3 here in a few and check. I don't know that they dont all say that. Get back to you shortly. Mine also says this; however, I did root and unlock mine.

My interpretation was that he has not installed one rooting app. One was left to assume he had rooted the phone or did not have a rooted phone which was the basis of my question. And yes I did read his post to answer your question. I would not leave you to assume I did from my response.

If you go to the Verizon store and look at the G3's they have on display, they all say "modified" instead of "official" however when I received my phone it said "official" until I rooted it.

I have not touched a single rooting app to this phone since I bought it new the day they came out. I have thought about rooting it, but I am touchy when it comes to phones that are in warrenty.
Although I might just say heck with it and actually root it anyways since it's saying modified, my main concern was why it was already saying it was modified when I hadn't touched it yet. I have experience rooting/restoring phones/tablets ever since the mesmerize/desire/fascinate ages so it shouldn't be too hard

My unrooted Verizon g3 does not say modified. It says official.

Hypothetical.... lets say someone bought it, played with it and rooted it or botched a root and returned it. try root checker in app store. just saying. makes more sense then someone snuck in your bedroom and took it and rooted while you were sleeping and returned it.

Could it switch to "modified" if one were not rooted but had disabled some of the bloat? Just a thought.

As of now, I cannot tell what it was to change it to modified, I went ahead and tried a reset through the settings and it kept the modified status, did a flash restore and it finally got rid of the modified and is now stating Official.
(To note that when it was in download mode it also stated modified before I flashed it with the ToT file.)
I did also find the reason for the verizon server to crash, which I cannot find the location of the thread elsewhere, but it is due to Google+ and one of verizons apps not being compatible with each other and eventually causing verizons app to crash. The only way so far to fix it is either downgrade google+ to stock, or disable the VerizonAvsService to stop the crash at boot.

I have disabled a bunch of bloat without root and it has not changed to modified.

I have verified for myself, that my Verizon LG G3 says "Modified" as well, yet it's a fact that I have never rooted or modified any of my system settings... I'm running Stock 6.0 Marshmallow... Go figure... Who knows with Verizon...

Bootlooping after Lollipop update

Here's the background: rooted my Kyocera Brigadier last June with King Root. Installed Titanium Backup and used it to delete Verizon's bloatware from the system. I did not make backups of the programs I deleted. Phone has run great, except the last few months would not notify me when voice mail messages were left for me. In November started getting notices for updating system to Lollipop. I've been exiting out of the notice half a dozen times a day ever since. Finally, three nights ago decided to do the update. Charged battery to 100%, backed up programs and settings with Titanium backup, and tried to delete King Root. There was no option to uninstall the app in App Manager, so I disabled and re-started phone. Checked phone for root with Root Checker, found it was no longer rooted, and initiated the update. After an hour, phone would vibrate, display "Powered by Android" then the "Kyocera" splash screen, then go black, and go through the cycle all over again. I plugged the phone in to keep it charged, and let it run the cycle over night without trying to interrupt it in case the update was taking longer than expected. Next morning, same thing - vibrate, splash screens, black screen, repeat. So, I have found that I can get the phone into stock Recovery, and I have executed the "factory reset", and "clear cache" commands. Phone still does the bootloop routine. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to rescue my phone?
Same thing happened to me last night! So aggravating! I've been searching all day and found nothing for this phone. There's not much support since the bootloader is still locked down. Couldn't find a stock rom or anything otherwise we might be able to flash it through fastboot. I think we may just be screwed unless Verizon will replace it. Probably gonna try to get a replacement tomorrow. :crying:
A guy at the Verizon store fiddled with it yesterday for 1/2 an hour, mostly going into Recovery and doing the same things I already tried. They said, "sometimes these old phones aren't compatible with the new software", then offered to sell me a new phone. I asked, and they said that there is no service place to send the phone for repair, Verizon just treats these units as disposable. Break it and it's time for a new one, at your own cost, even if it's Verizon's update that broke it. I'll be checking with Verizon support to see if the guys in the store were mistaken about repairs, but I suspect they know what they are talking about. I may fiddle with the "Software Update Assistant" (I found on the Verizon website) later this evening, and see if it will work with the phone in Recovery.

I'm not sure. You could check under Settings > System Updates to see if there's a disable option under there.

I would definitely talk to tech support, I chatted with a Verizon rep because I had to activate an older phone because of this problem and they said that would be the best option. I'm not totally confident in the knowledge of a lot of Verizon store employees. I think if this happens because of their update then it should be their responsibility to replace or repair the phone free of charge and if we complain loud and long enough then we might get somewhere. As for the "Software Update Assistant" is that a downloadable program? I checked on the Verizon website and I'm having a hard time locating it if it is. From what I read it looks like it's something that starts up when you plug the phone in but of course it would have to be working already. Also, I don't think this phone has a download mode which would allow the computer to pick it up as a USB device. I know if you boot it into the bootloader it will show up as Android Bootloader Interface so maybe we can do something from there. I couldn't get mine to show up while in recovery mode. Maybe if someone can get a copy of the Verizon firmware update we can flash the update through ADB.

I found the upgrade assistant on my computer actually so no need for the link. If you need the program, PM me and I'll send it to you somehow. Maybe you can do something with it. I messed up my recovery mode so I can't boot into it to see if it will work but it's not doing anything in the bootloader. If you happen to have a copy of your recovery.img that would be amazing. If you can fix yours and then make a copy of the recovery.img that would be much appreciated. Let me know.
Update:
After some research, I discovered DMClient is the app that handles OTA updates on our phone. Froze it in Titanium Backup (Pro needed). Boom. No more annoying OTA notifications.

Well, if anyone is interested, my phone is up and running. I wound up sending it to the Kyocera repair center in Texas. They took about 3 weeks to make the repair and ship it back to me. They installed Lollipop (along with all the Verizon bloatware). It appears that they did the repair under warranty, which surprised me, since I bought the phone used last summer. No invoice to pay. Cost me $20 to insure and ship it by UPS. The info on how to send it in is at this address https://www.kyoceramobile.com/support/repairs/united-states/faq/ Be warned, they were not very communicative about it. I got one email to acknowledge receipt of the phone, then it just showed up one day by FedEx. No paperwork in the box, just the phone. Not complaining, mind you, just try not to get too anxious while waiting if you send your phone in.
What version of Lollipop do you have now? I'm curious if it is the last... I was about to send my broken phone to repair center last year but decided to fix it myself... Now it's fully working without their help. LP without bloatware and with root. Good choice...

What version of Lollipop do you have now? I'm curious if it is the last... I was about to send my broken phone to repair center last year but decided to fix it myself... Now it's fully working without their help. LP without bloatware and with root. Good choice...

I've been getting prompts to update the firmware again. The prompts started 2 days after I got my phone up and running. Apparently, the repair center didn't have the latest version of Verizon's OS. The update prompts are for Software version: 2.955VZ according to Verizon's support website. Not sure if I'll try to root the phone any time soon, so I'm tempted to go ahead and do the update, hoping for the best since I haven't screwed with the system yet. I may try rooting with Kingroot again, if the unrooted experience turns out to be as aggravating as I expect it will be.
Anybody brave enough to try Flashfire to install the OTA (possibly) more safely?
Hi, i have the problem after my try to upgrade android version through assistant. My phone constantly tries to launch but cant, could you help me? what should i do? im not from usa.. maybe someone could send me a android version wich works for this phone, and it possible to install it? need your advise

Well, if anyone is interested, my phone is up and running. I wound up sending it to the Kyocera repair center in Texas. They took about 3 weeks to make the repair and ship it back to me. They installed Lollipop (along with all the Verizon bloatware). It appears that they did the repair under warranty, which surprised me, since I bought the phone used last summer. No invoice to pay. Cost me $20 to insure and ship it by UPS. I got one email to acknowledge receipt of the phone, then it just showed up one day by FedEx. No paperwork in the box, just the phone. HELP please! LG say my G5 is rooted

My LG G5 is just under 18 months old, so still covered by the 2 yr UK warranty in that sense. It has started to only accept a USB connection (for charging, data connection, anything) once before it needs rebooting to accept it again.
So, I sent it back to LG. They sent the phone back to say it is rooted and wouldn't fix it.
I have eventually got to someone at Head Office and they still say the same, that as the OS has been modified then they will not repair it (the warranty does state that they will not repair a fault CAUSED by a modification by the way)
So I ran the internal software check as mentioned here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/help/how-tell-g5-rooted-t3528248 - and it does indeed come up with a positive, it says that SUPERUSER (a rooting related app) was installed on 1/1/17. - see attached image
I well remember doing a full wipe and reinstall of the phone on new years day and Google Play installed all the apps on my account and I had to delete the ones that I didn't use anymore. I have rooted various devices and that is why Superuser was in my Google Play account. It did install on the phone that day and was uninstalled (never run) the same day. The phone has never been rooted (it has been mine since new, I know how to root phones and would know if I had! I have also had no reason to) and I have run Android Pay and the banking apps on it all the time.
I can actually get the phone repaired for £25 anyway so it's not so much the repair that is the issue right now, it's that I think LG shouldn't get away with treating customers like this and I want to make a point.
Before I go through the various public attempts to make the point (Twitter, Trading Standards, Tech mags) I do want to be 100% clear of the facts, so if I am mistaken then please do tell me.
The Head Office guy said that even though Android Pay etc still works, that they have different checks and that a program has been run that has modified the OS. Their own internal phone software tells me that this program is Superuser. My understanding is that superuser does nothing at all unless a phone is rooted. Then, on a rooted phone, it will act as a 'middle-man', intercepting anything that wants root access and asking for permission from the user.
Am I correct in saying (and LG incorrect) that Superuser makes NO change to the OS? All the version numbers in About in Settings are the current legit ones.
In my opinion, they are technically intelligent enough to know that there is no technical issue with my circumstances, they just want to get out of fixing the phone (which has already cost them me buying the next incarnation of the series at the end of my contract and my next TV too). Even if it had been modified, the app was installed on 1 Jan, the issue started a month ago, and LG happily fixed another fault (fingerprint sensor) on the phone back in April with no complaining about root! There could be no proof that the fault was caused by Superuser.
Any advice/ammunition to talk to them would be appreciated.
They don't know what they saying.. superuser app could not modify the os if it is not rooted and have not unlocked bootloader...
Exactly what I thought.
I should probably have posted this in the Superuser forum, is it possible to move it? I don't want to repeat post. If anyone could say what Superuser DOES do, that would be ideal..
