[Q] Z Ultra won't read sim card, random reboots. HALP! - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Just received my Z Ultra Today, and had some issues. Firstly, it was randomly powercycling. The 4.4.4 update seems to have fixed the worst of that.
However, the issue remains that the device will not read a sim card. I've tried four different sim cards from four known working devices and two carriers. It just reads, "Invalid Card- Emergency Calls Only".
I've gone through and repaired it several times using the PC Companion and i've tried several resets as well- nothing.
At my wit's end.
HALP!
Edit: Yes, i do have a valid IMEI. Knowing that, should i return the item to the seller?

I would return it.
Is it new?

Send it to Sony, if you can. Mine was defective, purchased on eBay. Called Sony, sent to repair center in Texas, they paid for shipping. Exactly one week later, device returned. WAS BRAND NEW, IN RETAIL PACKAGING!! ? Totally ? . Writing from it now. My problem was with the headphone ? jack not working at all, and a few other issues . So, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a totally new MOBILE PHONE ? !!

"not registered on network"

This is my last hope.
I had a contract SIM card. i got rid of the phone. put it in a old Nokia u had. bare in mind this is a micro SIM card, i just needed to work my way round putting it into a normal SIM card slot. and it worked fine for few days, then all of a sudden I could not make calls or text. Then I got my S3. Unlocked it fine. put my SIM card into it, internet worked, data connection. But i could not send or receive calls or texts. every time i call someone it says "not registered on network". I have tried hard reset and I have tried restarting and turning on and off settings but it will not make no difference.
PLEASE HELP. I need this, any input to this would be great.

Thanks for the reply guys. however I can't understand why it would be the phone. as it was having issues with my other one. is it possible to copy my contract over to another SIM card if I go into the o2 store?
I had this exact message during the time my new SIM has not yet been registred/active. Since youve also mentioned it not working in another phone, i'd assume its the SIM, not the S3.
About copying your contract from one SIM to another, no, this is NOT possible. Go to your carrier and ask for a new SIM. Test it on site. If still a no-go, ask them to show you it works in another device, to define find out if your S3 is the culprit.

HELP! No Call Audio & Call Disconnects

Symptoms:
- On making a call, starting from today (really yesterday), I get no audio going in or out. However both speakers are work fine, because the earpiece makes a beep sound to let me know call forwarding is active. The rear one works for everything.
- Headphones in call don't work either
- Sometimes I get sound for one call until I hang up, or it's very crackly and
useless.
- While ringing when dialing out (or rather, when you WOULD be hearing ringing if it was working), sometimes it'll cut the call and say "OUT OF SERVICE AREA", and then I'll get the circle with the line through it where signal is supposed to be. Signal is back seconds later.
- Data and texting work fine.
Things I've tried:
- I was on Omega ROM 13.1 with Siyah 1.5.3, although I've read online people have this issue bone stock, unrooted.
- Flashed stock insecure kernel
- Flashed several different modems
- ODIN'd back to the ROM that came with the phone (was originally a real-SIM-unlocked, Vodafone Germany i9300).
- Wiped everything possible
I'm willing to donate via Paypal to whoever has a definitive fix for this problem. It's really driving me insane that I don't have a working phone for calls. Worst case I'll call Samsung, but I expect they'll charge me an arm and a leg, if they even accept it considering it's from Germany originally (bought it off Amazon in June). This seems like a software issue, not a hardware issue consider both speakers still physically work fine. The issue is, what the hell is causing it if it came about completely randomly, and is happening across all ROMs, kernels, and modems that I flash?
Before you ask, no the Accessibility Setting for turning off all sounds is not on.
Thanks in advance for anyone that replies.
I use omega rom and I've had this a lot, I found that restoring the apn using titanium backup caused the problem, so I now use a apn backup app. Sometimes flashing the modem twice, clear cache, fix permissions helps. I always got call audio if I flashed back the base Rom. On ics, I could flash modems Willy nilly and 90% would work, not so on jelly bean. However, on omega v25 I can flash any modem and it works. Lh4 is about the best modem for me,
After flashing Rom (with full wipe), check call audio, make 1 change at a time so you know what removes sound. You may have to clear cache/fix permissions after certain changes.

It just happened totally randomly (as in it began totally randomly). Flashing the ROM again helped for one or two calls. Then back to square one. Tried everything possible including wiping and restoring the EFS. I'm not sure what kind of issue this is because the speaker itself works and so do data and texting, but not calls.

Well try downloading your region modem as I have experienced that problem when I was on xxxxDl12. try "15". If it doesn't help, then your region modem for your device should do the trick

I'm in the US so there's no regional modem. But I've tried every modem and none have solved the issue. And this issue came up after 4 months of no issues. I'm hoping there's no hardware issues.

Product F(RED), did you get a solution to this issue? i'm having the /exact/ same thing with my i9300 in the US. I'd also be willing to donate to whom ever documents a solution for this issue. I'll supply any information or do any action (short of bricking the phone) to fix it..
I had to ship it to the sellers on Amazon (who are in Germany, where the phone came from originally), and they shipped it to Samsung for repair, and then back to me. Samsung in any EU-member country (including the UK) will repair a Galaxy S3 from any other EU country, and my S3 has a 2 year warranty instead of 1. It was a hardware component failure (not sure which) which required a new motherboard.
Guess what. It's happening again. I don't know what to do. I don't have the time or money to keep shipping this thing abroad to get it fixed. -_-
Ok, is anybody still monitoring this situation? I have had this exact same problem which has plagued me now for about 2 months. The story is bizarre:
My phone was a blue i9300 which I bought factory unlocked at my local **** Smith retailer in July 2012. It worked just fine for months, then this audio problem surfaced, precisely as described here. I googled for solutions and tried various "fixes" which apparently worked for other people but had no effect for me. These escalated in invasiveness until I had flashed CWM and several ROMs with several versions of modem. None had any effect whatever. By this time, I decided it must be a hardware issue, so I spent the next week of my spare time trying to erase what I'd done so I could do a warranty claim. Finally I got TriangleAway to work and flashed it with I9300XXEMB1_I9300OXAEMB1_BTU stock UK system. To outward appearances, the phone looked original. Everything was fine, except for the original audio problem.
Meanwhile, I found a white S3 on ebay with a broken screen and I bought it for the motherboard, which I thought would fix the problem with the blue one and remove the need for warranty claim, as I still wasn't sure I'd covered my tracks well enough. The broken handset arrived and I carefully swapped the motherboard over, put the SIM in and made a call. I was horrified to find the exact same problem. Everything worked fine, except no audio on calls.
Now what was I going to do with this broken handset I just bought? It was worth nothing as it was, so I began looking on ebay for a new screen for it. Found one and ordered it. I had already decided that the fault must be on the screen half of the phone rather than the motherboard. While I was waiting for the screen to arrive, I took the original blue phone to **** Smith, explained the problem to them and asked them to send it to Samsung for me for warranty. This they happily did. I put my SIM in my Bauhn 3G tablet and have been using it as a phone (better than nothing) in the meanwhile.
The screen for the white one arrived yesterday and I sat down and carefully installed it. Put in the SIM and rang my landline. You guessed it, no audio. Exact same problem. WTF? This can't be happening. But it is. What do I do now? What are the chances of these two handsets having exactly the same fault? The white one has its original firmware XXBLH3. I haven't messed with it at all other than changing the screen. It can't be the SIM card as it works ok in the tablet. I am lost. HELP!
Edit: Just did an OTA upgrade, it is now 4.1.1 XXDLK1 Audio problem remains the same.

OK that's the most insane thing ever. I can't frigging believe it.
I've had this issue for a month and a bit and it's driving me insane. Worst of all it goes and comes back without any apparent reason. Today it started again. I've done all the exact things you did, changed modem firmware, installed cyanogenmod, everything in the phone works fine except I get no audio in calls and suddenly call drops and signal goes out of service for a few seconds.
After hearing about your case I don't know what to do. I have an insurance with the phone company that covers theft, I am thinking about it.....
well same thing happened to me , i was in a different country for one month and when i went back this started. i have no idea whats going on.
It's a hardware issue. You need to send it to Samsung for motherboard replacement.

[Q] HOX+ stuck in airplane mode, comes out of it for short periods

My HOX+ (international model) worked fine for months, but yesterday it suddenly lost signal and now it's stuck in the airplane mode. When that happened, I didn't reboot, upgrade or otherwise tampered with the phone. The phone was rooted and had Elegancia ROM 4.5.0 installed long time ago.
This problem is mentioned in few other threads, but in my case the phone randomly comes out of the airplane mode by itself for few minutes and then goes back. During these short periods everything works - i.e. I can make calls and get 3G data and see IMEI. That happens once every few hours. Perhaps this was the case for other people as well, but nobody mentioned that so far. Wi-Fi does work all the time, though - so only cellular network is broken.
I wiped cache, simulated battery pull, and installed Elegancia ROM 5.2.0 and re-flashed boot.img from it. Nothing helps. It looks like hardware problem, but before I try repair options, perhaps anyone here has other ideas.
Speaking of hardware repairs, does anyone have experience with repairing rooted HTC phones ? I understand that unlocking bootloader voids warranty, but they will still repair it for a fee - right ?

Can you remember when those situations are happening if the cellular network signal is weak in this area? Is this problem occurring everywhere or specifically in a zone area e.g. only work, only at home, etc.?
Are you using the Power Saver mode?
Maybe your SIM card is just a bit loose in it's support, try to install a "scotch" tape cut-to-size on its back, it only takes 5 minutes to try and its free!

Not at all! Your warranty with your provider can be void, but not with HTC.
Many reports of the same issue with the Nexus Galaxy HERE
Yes, I am absolutely positive now it's a hardware problem. The same SIM card works perfectly in another phone, and other SIM cards don't work in this HOX+ with the same symptoms. The phone doesn't even notice absence of SIM card when there's none - it says "No Service", and doesn't say "No SIM Card", which it normally did before.

That is not what HTC told me. Their phone representative said that unlocking bootloader voids the warranty, regardless of how your purchased the phone.
I was ready to go ahead with paid repair, but after checking IMEI number, they told me this is a global (C2) model, originating in UK, and not only their warranty doesn't apply here, HTC USA won't even repair it for a fee because they don't have necessary parts. This was factory-unlocked international HTC One X+ (model S728E), purchased on US eBay, and yes - it is UK model, so I'm stuck now. I'll update when I talk to HTC in UK.
Update
As promised, I am posting an update to this story.
I called HTC UK and they said if the problem is not caused by firmware modification, it will be covered by warranty.
I filled RMA request on HTC UK support site, but then they changed their mind and told me that repair will cost because of the unlocked bootloader.
I didn't have any other options at that point, so I installed stock ROM, unrooted and re-locked bootloader and sent the phone to UK service center. I used the cheapest USPS shipping (about $20) and it took about 2 weeks for the phone to get there from NY, but once it got there, I received back repaired working phone here in the US in a couple of days. I was not charged any money for this, after all.
The serial number of the phone remained the same, but IMEI changed, which confirms that the problem was in hardware indeed.
By the time I got the phone back from UK, my eBay seller obtained RMA from US HTC (which they denied me directly).
This whole experience demonstrated that:
US HTC support is useless. Everything several of their representatives told me turned out to be outright BS.
UK HTC support is excellent.
HTC doesn't seem to have consistent policy regarding unlocked bootloaders. Formally unlocking voids warranty (at least on non-developer units), but in reality it probably doesn't, if the the hardware is faulty
My experience
HI,
I have an HOX which had the standard HTC firmware from new. The battery needed replacing so contacted my network provider who agreed to “replace” the battery for me.
Received the phone back, not my phone but a refurbished phone which now had branded firmware, not overly happy about that! But I did have “my” phone back.
After reinstalling all the apps I use regularly and using the phone for three days, I noticed that I could not get any network coverage for approx. 24 hours. I called at the network provider shop where the assistant said that it was unusual and appeared to be stuck in airplane mode, which I hadn’t noticed. After using factory reset and a new sim the problem was still evident.
Two options; return it to the network provider for repair or try one of the larger shops which have a technician on site.
Whilst deciding what to do (over lunch) my phone started working correctly all the network information appeared in the “about” menu, great, sorted. I assumed the new sim need to “register” its self :/ However, several hours later the phone again showed no network signal!!!!
I just left the phone to one side and decided that I should send it back for repair, again.
Having left the phone untouched, it again started working, the only thing that I noted was that each time it started working it had turned off power saver mode. I have left power saver off and for the last 24 hours the problem has not reoccurred. Early days, but fingers crossed
In summary I guess it is a firmware problem based on my experience.
I hope this helps anyone who experiencing the same problems.

Plz Help, Att Htc One "NO SIM ERROR" Tape fix doesnt work!

Hello, im new here but I have seen over the years that this is the place to come to fix cell phone issues and the such. My issue is this, I have just received an ATT HTC ONE, I bought it off Ebay. The phone itself phisically is in mint condition, but the problem is whenever I put a sim card in it, it just wont read it. Im overseas, I have already bought the unlock code for the phone but I get no chance to enter it because the phone wont detect a sim no matter what I do. I have tries puting several different sim cards and no go, I even had a spare ATT sim card and no go. I have just tried the "tape fix" but the phone wont recognize my sim. Is there anything else that I can try or do? I have flashed phone software in the past (droid dna) so if thats what would take to fix this I would do it. Im overseas and returning this to ebay for a refund would not be an option for me. Any help would be greatly apreciated.
I had the same issue and it solved after they replaced the sim tray, but I bought the phone from ATT so I was under warranty.
You might try to get it repaired there, but they might charge you. Or try buying a replacement sim tray off ebay or amazon (I don't know if they sell it or not)

Sim cards can go bad as well. I would go to an AT&T store and they will replace your sim card for free.
Thanks, I did try several sim cards that I had lying around and none of them worked. I have just gotten of the phone with HTC tech support and they are sending me a replacemente sim tray, hope that fixes the problem. Will have to wait 4 looooong weeks without a phone tough...

You can buy a new simtray for $2.30
They sell lots of other parts for the HTC One as well.

You might want to flash the stock RUU, might have a bad radio flash or something odd.

Oh..ok.. well I dont think new sim tray would be the solution.
I have two HTC One. And I tried putting the sim tray of working HTC ONE into this one and nothing happened.. same issue.
I have couple queries though : Was ur phone's software modified in any way when u recieved it ? I mean was the phone unlocked, rooted etc ?
If yes, did u tried flashing a RUU on it and see if it solves the issue
So I finally found the solution to my problem.. apparently its something related to sim not aligning properly in the socket.
Tape-fix didnt worked for me too and nor did the RUU. Then I tried something different.. I had my iphone 5's nano sim and put it in a plastic nano-to-micro sim adapter and put that in.. it snug in very tight and hurray, the sim got detected. Got the unlock code and its working now !!!!
With this experiment I think I also found out whats ur issue might be too. We often cut the sim using the sim-cutters which are often not perfectly sized but works with most phones. I suggest either try using my method if u can or get a retail micro-sim from a service provider and try that.. it should work.

Agreed, but it does happen. The last batch of T-Mobile Nexus 4's my company purchased, 2 out of 16 had an issue where the SIM's weren't being read due to pin misalignment issues inside the slot. We were able to replace them.

[Q] Sony Warranty Help!!

Hello XDA,
I am in a bit of a sticky position. I have a Sony Xperia Z2 D6503. I purchased the phone from a 3rd party seller on Amazon. The purchase was made around 3 months ago. With the £350 purchase i got standard earphones, charger and original box with the phone. The best thing the phone came with and i assume came with every Sony smartphone is a 2 year warranty.
This warranty entitles me to give the phone back and they repair the problem. Problems only being something i could not have caused, like overheating motherboard.. Or whatever.
The problem i have is my phone wont allow me to use any SIM card. It did when i first got it then after a couple of weeks the phone stopped sending or receiving phone calls and text messages . The weird thing is the 3G internet still works when i have my SIM inserted in the phone.
I obviously got worried and started searching why it happened & how can i possibly fix this. The research i done gave me the conclusion of my phones IMEI is blocked. So straight away i contacted Amazon and they gave the money back and i still have the phone (strangely)
I am now wondering weather i can use my Sony warranty and see if they will repair the phone even though it may be blocked. I have found out that i will not get in trouble as i have legit receipts that show i bought this phone before it was blocked and i have a reasonable reason why i have it.
Would Sony repair or replace my phone even if the IMEI is blocked? Considering the phone is in warranty and i have receipts to prove the purchase.
Please can you give me other possible solutions to this annoying problem.
Kind Regards,
HaroonZ2
I don't see why you shouldn't go for it, the alternative is to end up with an expensive media player.
But hasn't the seller contacted you yet? I find this pretty strange, but there's no reason to have any legal troubles if the third party didn't do anything about it.

The people I bought the phone from stopped replying over Amazon. So as policy amazon had to repay the money. However, they don't care what I do with the phone.
That's what I had in mind. I have a great media player. And £350. But imagine if I had a working sony Z2 and £350. You can't blame me for trying..
Cheers
Go to Sony and tell them about your problem, you've got nothing to lose.
Your point is valid, you've done nothing wrong, and even if they refuse to repair it on warranty, you get to keep the phone.

Have you tried going to Settings> Wireless & Networks > More...> Internet settings (Download settings for internet and MMS). Also SIM cards do fail from time to time. I would get another from your carrier and then check that your APN settings are correct.

Yes, this was one of the many things I have tried. Ive even considered changing the IMEI.. But I won't.
I have ran in to a dead end with this problem.. It seems like there is not much more I can do apart from taking a risk and giving it too Sony.
Cheers,
Haroon
I have a warranty concern as well, though it isn't an issue with a blocked IMEI.
I tried to pull out the sim tray today and it got stuck and in my frustration (and having no other solution) I used tweezers to pull it forcefully out. Pretty sure it got stuck on the contacts of the MB and bent them, since the tray won't go back in now. Now I can see this as kind of my fault, but not really right? I didn't do anything to make it get stuck and I'm not sure how else I'd have been able to access the sim slot. I obviously won't tell them I forced it out, but any chance they'd fix it on warranty?

I'm sure they'll charge you for that.
They consider these type of fault, as user misuse.

Yes that is something you will have to pay for. Like I said, Sons free warranty deal is only applied when the phone has an internal or external fault cased by the phone itself. Something a consumer damaged breaches the Sony warranty. Therefore you would have to pay some fee.
I don't know what you would pay; it may be something like a charge for sony looking at the phone then extra charge for it to be repaired.
