Thanks for the reply! Is you device encrypted because mine is.
All the nexus 9 tablets are encrypted by default (I'm not sure about the LTE devices though, but they must be too).

I had a similar problem with a Nexus 7 it was so bad the file transfer eventually failed. Never found a solution for MTP transfer, instead I pulled the files I wanted using a network file share and ES File Explorer.
I was using a mac and the mac android file transfer program.
Same problem here too.
Transferring files from my Mac using the MTP app, both the tablet and the app seem to struggle.
Sometimes the transfer fails and I get a message from the MTP app saying "please unplug and restart your device".
I try to use FTP transfer over my WiFi network as much as I can to avoid this problem.
Mtp va ubuntu is nice

I used an app Samba file sharing for android and this makes my phone a samba server. I was then easily able to access my SD card on my laptop on LAN (wifi).
I now have a mapped network drive for my SD Card and it is super easy to transfer data to my SDCard.
But(I tried this, but was unsuccessful), I want to use my phone as a portable wifi hotspot and then use my phone as a samba server so that I can easily share my SDCard contents with any other (android) device which connects to my phone's wifi network. Is it possible?
This is what I was thinking the other day when I was at a freinds house when I didn't have my cable with me and he does not have a WiFi router, I had to email him the file which was about 5mb which would of been alot faster for his laptop to connect and pull the file from my phone on its own.
Very interested if this can be done.......
I guess the app would have to deal out dhcp and dns
+1 - really want this, would be so much better than using Bluetooth to shift files from one droid to another without a router. Don't really see why Samba reports 'wifi is down' when there's an active client connected to the hotspot
What about using you phone as a portable wifi hotspot and switching on an ftp server?
Edit: just tried it with "ftp server" and hotspot switched on. Appeared to work but have no-one to test with :-(

Anyone ever get this working?
I've tried this using "LAN Manager" from play store. And using a beelink gt1 ultimate TV box as client. It working fine so far. But if I boot the box with CoreELEC, I'm able to connect but file read is extremely slow.
Does anyone know if there are any Apps or ROMS that allow access to SD card on the Galaxy Tab 10.1?
Im using DropBox at the moment but it takes hours to upload music/films.
I know Kies is an option, but it is not registering my device due to the ROM I am running.
Any help will be appreciates.
If you are running Windows then load the Samsung USB driver and it will mount as a USB drive. I believe for that to work you need debugging off (I could have this backwards though).
The driver is in this download along with all the files needed to root the device

i'm using the USB adaptor and FAT 32 memory sticks to get my data onto the tab. It's worked fine for me, not as easy as syncing with itunes and iphone but it works simply enough.
Kies is a joke. I managed to get some pics onto my tab, but they were all scrambled. It wouldn't find any video's to transfer. WIFI explorer didn't work for me either but I'm glad the USB adaptor worked for me and it's a hell of a lot quicker than WIFI.
'TCommander' - Worked a Treat. Thank you
A good alternative is using ES File Explorer and adding other computers on your home wifi network. Then you can browse files from your computer(s) from your Tab.

First I used the SD adaptor but the speed is poor, but far better as wi-fi. Now I use a HDD via usb-adaptor and keep my files on the HDD. Copy big files to the tab is a nightmare imo.
So I got my SGS3 yesterday and noticed that the Android File Transfer app won't work, which used to work well when I owned a Galaxy Nexus. I tried it on 2 different Macs and it won't work on neither. The app does not recognize the phone being connected.
When I connected it on windows (bootcamp, same Mac) it was recognized, so it's not a hardware fail, it's a software bug.
My Q is, has anybody successfully managed to use the Android File Transfer app together with a Galaxy S3.
Thx, all the help greatly appreciated.
EDIT:
I just tried setting the USB Connection mode to Camera (PTP) and Android File Transfer now sees my phone. Everything is fine.
But, DAMN YOU SAMSUNG, code more carefully!
Thanks! This helped me out as well! Was worried something was wrong with my new phone .
enabling camera/PTP mode for usb connection
Hi, I am struggling with this problem of AFT not working with samsung S3. Could you elaborate on how and where to make this change in USB setting - is it on the camera or macbook pro?

On your phone, when connected to the AFP program on your mac, you'll see a USB symbol in the notification area. Pull it down and you'll see it says something like 'Connected as media device' and it'll give you options underneath that to change it. Select that and you'll get to a settings page which will allow you to set your phone as a media device ((MTP) or as a camera (PTP) - do the latter and it should work fine.
I have to say, I love this phone but am not overly enamoured with the mac syncing aspect of it. Most apps in the store are flaky at best or don't work at all, TBH. Using the above method, I've managed to get my media over to the phone by dragging/dropping from iTunes and iPhoto.
Problem is, I still can't find a way for my computer to - reliably - see my phone as a camera when I plug it in e.g. invisible to iPhoto and Image capture.
If you find a way around my problem, please post it up. HTH.
get an app called airdroid (xfer via browser) or file expert & use a FTP program to transfer files from your Mac to the S3
I was going to say that it was another way that Apple is trying to boycot Samsung's phones along with all the suing going on lol.

Thanks for that. Had a look at Airdroid and it seems really slick. Pity though, as it has issues with external storage.
Never mind, I'm dragging/dropping stuff from iPhoto/iTunes to folders which I the keep in sync with CheetahSync. It's all a bit inelegant, but it does the job for now.
hey guys, i'm having an issue with the file transfer. Did what the OP stated above and I can see both internal memory and SD, but when i tried to drag and drop from Finder it is giving me an error, saying my screen is locked (even when it isn't) and asking me to reconnect. anyone else have this problem? for now i'm transferring using File Explorer but its a pain in the ass. thanks!
EDIT: really weird, first file i tried was an mp3 and it kept giving me an error, now i'm moving an avi and looks like its working. apologies
Still having trouble
I'm having serious trouble with AFT and tried what's been suggested here but it's still not working for me.
I've installed AFT on my MacBook (OS X Lion).
All that happens is in all tries is that when I plug in the S3, AFT simply says:
"Could not connect to device
Try reconnecting or restarting your device"
I tried both with no luck. I tried it with selecting Camera (PTP) mode and then with Media device (MTP) mode. No luck. I tried both with and without "USB debugging" selected. No luck. I tried reinstalling AFT. No luck. Restarting my MacBook. No luck.
Any ideas?
Don't connect it its mtp connect it as a camera

Just a heads up. Installing AFT on my macbook air caused my usb to Ethernet dongles to stop working. AFT had to be removed to fix them. Applecare are aware and IIRC blame Google.

You're right as it doesn't seem to recognise the S3 at all when on MTP but AFT starts up each time I select PTP (i.e. my Mac recognises it when in the Camera mode) but I just end up getting the "Could not connect to device, Try reconnecting or restarting your device" message.
Strangely enough AFT needs the phone to be in camera mode to work.
But KIES for OSX needs the phone to be in MTP mode. I couldnt get wireless kies to work (but didnt try all that hard either)
well we've found another reason never to buy a mac
i dont have an s3 but i was googling this issue, i havent got a samsung device on ics working on my mac yet, my tf101 tablet just decided to work today after numerous errors about it not being connected.
AFT used to work, no longer does
Hi
I had this problem when I just got my Galaxy S3 at the end of May, and switching the connection mode to camera (ptp) did the trick. Now, however, regardless of the connection type I have chosen or whether or not I have enabled debugging, I cannot use AFT. At no point does it recognize my device, it just keeps telling me "No Android device found. Please connect your Android device with a USB cable to get started." I have reinstalled the program and still no luck.
Further info: I'm running 10.7.4 on an early 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro
Please help
Samsung changed something in firmware LFB that doesn't allow AFT to connect in MACs anymore.

Yeah, MTP never worked for me on my Macbook, while PTP worked as a workaround until LFB (and later). With LFB changing to PTP (by default) pops up Image Capture, which, if everything worked as it should, is what you'd expect I suppose. The problem is that Image Capture doesn't find any pictures on the device even though it recognises that an I9300 is connected - and Android File Manager now doesn't work in either MTP or PTP mode.
So I am not the only one not being able to transfer files using AFT? Or has someone figured it out?
Well I run KIES now and open the file browser that way. The only way I could make work on OSX. On windows I have no problems just connecting it and accessing.

I need a way to transfer large files, 700mb+, from my hox+ to my Iconia. Problem is I'm on cellular data, so something like Wi-Fi file transfer would be out of the question. I tried using Bluetooth file transfer, but it takes ages, and always fails anyway. My hox+ is rooted but the Iconia isn't, and it's running android 3.2 if that's at all relevant. thanks in advance ladies/gents.
Do you have a computer.
I have a two, but this phone is completely incapable of connecting to either via usb. neither computer even acknowledges my phone is connected to it.

I have had issues with this coming from a HTC Desire and found the only way to get my PC to see the phone correctly is to turn on USB Debugging on and the moment I connect the phone to the PC I have to unlock the screen otherwise all I get is a blank window. (Once the drivers have installed)
Do you have drivers installed?
I've installed every driver I can find pertaining to mtp, htc, android, etc. I honestly think maybe there's something wrong with the phone, but then again when I "install hardware" on Vista and install all the drivers that way,I still get a code 10 (cannot connect).
What about ADB? If so you can transfer to computer with it.
my phone will not connect via usb, to transfer files I use web sharing. but that isn't feasible to transfer from phone to tablet, unless I'm on Wi-Fi. I need a way to do it when I'm away from home and on cellular data.
Are you using windows XP? If so, you must install windows media player 11 / 12 so that your pc will recognize your phone as a usb mass storage device and download and install the latest HTC Sync Manager, just google it.
Hope it helps.
Best regards.

Well i finally figured out why my phone wouldn't connect via usb, because the phone itself was BROKEN! Got a new one under warranty and everything is working perfect! Thanks for all the help guys! Its time to get rooting, again!
Hoy can use Airdroid from the play store

thanks for the advice, but airdroid uses data. it's handy if you're on Wi-Fi though.
All of a sudden I am having a problem with getting files to transfer onto/off of my phone. I copied over 200 pictures onto my PC with no problems and now I cannot put any files on or off of it (sd or phone). I am getting the error "cannot copy the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected." I've tried using multiple USB cables, multiple USB ports on PC, etc. with no change.
Tried installing kies to see if that would help, but no. Reinstalled samsung usb drivers with no change also.
Any ideas on what to try?
