Sony is open to selling its mobile phone business... - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

This made me sad and I hope to god it's not true.

Yes That is seriously not the best thing to read.
May this be some rumour.
@jerpelea, if you can please do let the people at Sony Mobile know that how much we love them, and how much we wish that this news is a rumour.

I hope to god it is a rumour. Of all companies, I'd hate Sony to stop producing products especially phones and televisions...
As others have said, Sony may just need to change their strategy and marketing to gain further sales and and profits...
Remember several times in the past, HTC was in trouble and there were rumours of them going bankrupt due to a loss of millions of dollars.
A year or so later, HTC have changed their strategy and are heavily advertising their products resulting in better sales and profits...
One can only hope Sony do the same. Samsung, LG and HTC are advertising everywhere on the TV, radio and streets.
Whilst I've seen Sony adverts, they are rare and not enough.
Later on this year, the new James Bond movie will be released. It is said it will feature the latest Sony Z4 so this should hopefully boost interest and result in further sales!
I myself and eagerly awaiting the release of the Z4 ultra and I believe it'll be one of the best handsets released early this year.
It'll be the first mobile to have a whooping 4Gb ram! Also we should have a greatly improved 16mp camera with flash, a 2k screen, bigger battery, etc...

This won't happen anytime soon, if it happens at all.
Sony now finally releases one flagship each year, thus saving themselves money and making the customers happy.
Personally i think Sony is going in the right direction, and leading in community and developer support, i'm sure it's only a matter of time that this turns out positive.

Sony is not doing well at all. It first discontinued Vaio notebook computers, now thinking of ditching mobiles after buying out Ericsson's interest in their partnership.
Underlying factor of why Sony DOES NOT succeed here in the US is NO MOBILE PHONE SUBSIDIES, and poor customer support.
Major software flaws also play a part as well.
My last experience with customer support surprised me in the quick turnaround in the replacement of my Xperia Z Ultra, but the phone has a mind of its own, at times unresponsive, and just yesterday, its first reboot after being totally unresponsive.
I do like the fact that this mobile phone, with its improvements, impress me, but up to a point.
My biggest gripe is an unremovable battery ? .

Consider the fact that Apple phones, Motorola, some LG, Nokia, Lenovo do not have removable batteries.
In fact, the majority dont have removable batteries. I would like to have removable batteries aswell.
Its a weak argument, but apple of course started the whole thing.
As for the subject at hand, its for the best. They should either completely stop making smartphones or start making more marketing. Afterall, in the smartphone business, ads and brand names make the sales.
There is a German idiom "Mehr Schein als Sein ", which roughly translates to " It's all on the surface".
Content value matters little compared to the percieved value of something. I dont have any brand loyalty to sony, but I would prefer more players on the field because I rather would not have a smartphone then forced to choose an Apple iphone or Samsung phone.
I loathe apple products and the people who support such business practices.

Samsung Galaxy series is much more popular than any iPhone, yet has a removable battery, so I do not accept your argument on that.
Making it ?water proof is most likely the reason why it has a sealed battery. But batteries don't have an extended life, so what's to happen when the battery ? finally dies??!!
Not enough innovation has gone into any of the Xperia line of mobile phones , yet some innovation has made it a worthwhile look to.
But software and hardware problems have frightened off potential customers ,and rightly so, since I have experienced some software and hardware issues with the replacement device as well.

You buy a battery of ebay or other site and a tape seal and change the battery - then you are good for another 3 + years

As much as I like to blame Apple for everything, this is not something they started... far from it. In fact, if you want to blame someone for starting the "PDA-Phone with non-removable batteries", have a look at HTC. The SX56 aka HTC Wallaby did not have a removable battery and it preceded the iPhone by roughly 6 years. Let alone the fact that most PDA's before that did not have a removable battery either.

Changing the battery ? on this or any other sealed Sony mobile phone is a nightmare if you do not have the proper tools . I don't. And I know if Sony were to replace the battery ?, it would be very expensive .

The main issue is the water-proof tape problem! When you removed the back-lid, you should notice that there is a rubber tape with glue attached. It must be needed to replace a new one each time, else the water proof function will be gone.
It's quite easy and cheap to buy on chinese shopping website(www.taobao.com), but the logistic fee is horrible for overseas.
P.S I had more than 10 times for xperia Z, Z1, Z Ultra disassembly

The best place to find a Sony battery would be Ebay. You can easily find Xperia Z Ultra accessories there.
Here is a link for a genuine battery, only £8.90 which is around $12, far cheaper than Sony would charge you for a battery!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-Genui...148?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item48732e0d0c
Even the rear glass cover can be bought off Ebay:

I could never do this, but I do know a friend who might be able to do this.

With them unlocking the newer phones seems like a way to try to keep alive...
Meh. They've been in trouble for a while now in my opinion. Their phones have been alright but none of them really stand out anymore. Even the Play fell far short of what it could have been (seriously, all they needed to do was release with ff7 on there and they would have killed it ).
It'll be a shame if it happens but it's possible if things don't pick up for them .

Xperia arc - best single core phone that money can buy.
Well thats the sad part. Play was supposed to be like their ACE under the hand but... Just fell short... I hope they REALLY start listening to us and it looks like they are starting like rolling out the X10 update. If they want to survive there ginna have to adapt...
that would be sad =( hopefully this doesn't happen. SE deserves much more than this.
Just crap xD
Its funny how you can see a video to compare xperia arc and the super duper trooper SGS2 and the experia Arc with single core its basically the same phone xD
SE always got phones that looks at least 1 year older than competence (hardware) but they always do the same and sometimes do better that some ultra super duper phones.
I dont think SE will come down that way =P
Sorry for my bad english! _o/
I think they're wrong...
If you go by handset numbers then yes, they're selling fewer. But Q4 in 2008 they had a 184 million euro loss. Just to compare, SE had an 8 million euro profit in Q4 2010.
Yeah, not much but a huge change and profitable. If it wasn't for Android, I don't think there would be an SE anymore :O

read the article more carefully people, they'll drop the Ericsson name and call it just Sony, they're not going out of business yet.
It won´t happen so many time hearing this rummors i think that SE is upgrading the strategy they went through a very bad year in 2010 but now it seems to be different they are giving the costomers a very good catalog in phones and with verry good quality a little more time and SE will be at the top again you´ll see that

I wouldn't put that much stock into these yearly articles released by 24/7 Wall St. More than half the time they are completely wrong, and the times they are 'right' are because of predictions based on corporate events that will lead to inevitable happenings anyway.
I think they are totally off the mark regarding Sony Pictures. Sony would never give up Sony Pictures. They wanted in the motion picture and television businesses so they could be deeper in the entertainment industry ecosystem beyond just technology.
24/7 Wall St.'s prediction for Sony Ericsson most likely came from analyst articles like this one:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110524/tc_nm/us_sony_ericsson
SE is, at least, making money again, and they are releasing more and more Android products. As long as they continue cover the entire spectrum of high- to mid- to low-end Android phones, people will buy. I don't think they will ever be #1 in market share or even close to it. But I doubt Sony Ericsson would ever be absorbed into the main Sony brand. As long as they are in the top ten and profitable (like the VAIO line which is forever in the bottom-five of the top ten PC brands and usually eeks out smallish profits), they will be around.

no one wants a single core phone in an age of dual cores. Only the style over substance crowd will buy the arc but they are not enough to generate large enough sales. Plus apple have that segment of the market pretty much sealed up. regarding the article, I don't think it would be such a bad idea for SE to take total control of things. ericsson in my opinion are just holding them back.

A dual core phone is nothing unless the software is designed to take advantage of it, which is currently the case. Google has stated that Honeycomb is the only version of Android that supports multiple threads/CPUs.
So until Google updates the phone OS to support it don't buy into the gimmick.

I guess Sony is back with a vengeance. I like many things that Apple and Samsung bring to the mobile market, but I'm tired of watching this duopoly develop, so I'm glad to see more competition and a disruption to that dupoply. I don't know where all you guys live, but where I live, almost ALL of the Samsung phones are almost as expensive as the Apple ones and at that they are all black retangular boring objects with NO differentiation. I'm glad to see NEW price points, COLOUR and CHOICE. Sadly, HTC, Sharp and others seem to have been falling apart in the last couple of years so any more competition is good.
(As for the resources, if you Google the stories you'll find a resource that you may prefer, these two were more credible for me.)
They are beautiful devices, I'm now on my third and my next Phone no doubt will be one.
That's me too, I own products from all of the major companies and really enjoy them, but I think Sony's on to something with these phones, and the sales stats. suggest the same too.
Love the Sony phones (have four of them). Never been a fan of HTC and Samsung just feels cheap (though they have nice software additions). Next years Sony devices are going to kick ass too.

This is very good news indeed. I've always felt that Sony and the Xperia range have never received the recognition they deserve like the way Apple and Samsung do. Some people buy iPhones and S3s and Note 2s just because of the name. Good to see people finally coming to their senses. Xperias ftw
yeaaahhh... This is real story, my friend sold his Galaxy W and he asked me which Sony phone is the best with a budget around Rp 3 million
and I suggest him to buy Xperia P..
It's a prove that Sony is back and I proud have my Sola... :highfive:
Yeah xperias become really popular,no one wants Samsung becuase their phones are ugly and expensive (not Apple expensive) but still my country goes two Europe lower midlle part so price is really important (i cant understand how americans could be poor when everything is much cheaper is their country and still have much bigger pay) for example my cousing who never had Smartphone (of ANY kind) want to buy Xperia Miro so he asked me is it good, well I told him to go with Xperia Mini or Live but he insisted, not sure why. This is just proof that their sales are going up because good design and cheap prices.Just to warn I see many Samsugn-Apple fanboys not reccomending Sony because of 2010 Xperia fiasco but they never had any Sony phone.I cant understand who could buy Samsung phones, they are ugly and have problems+one of worst update support, but it looks they are upgrading Novathor devices to JB so Sony must to then because that could really get effect to their sales.

I agree with all of you.
I had an Xperia S, and now i have an Xperia P.....is the sexiest smartphone on the market IMHO. I selled XS just because was too big and heavy for my pockets....just the battery is less durable....but overall i like more than XS.
Another good thing from Sony are the updates that generally are quite frequent and good instead of other brands (who said LG ? ).
How exciting. I can't wait to see what Sony offers in the future.
Yeah, lots of tech. sites are speculating that Sony is ramping up it's software and updates now that it's getting so much positive media attention. I cannot believe how popular the latest Bond phone is...
p.s. I put this in the general news section of Android on XDA. This is news of a major Android OEM. But it was stuffed in this corner. That p**** me off sometimes.

Yeah, initially Sony made some public comments that they were not rushing into multiple cores (over a year ago) because smartphones 'had no use for them'. Now, if they perform well with fewer or a single core, I agree. Many cores to me is like too many megapixels, there is more to a good camera than megapixels, no?
To be honest, I do not see any performance boost on my dual core Sola than any of my previous single core phones. And yes, I would *love* to see a Sony Nexus. It should have been the Bond phone! Imagine the Bond phone which is so popular getting Nexus status? Actually, if you Google this, Sony Ericsson declined Google's invitation to be an early Nexus device OEM. Bert Norberg said something about 'we're not that kind of OEM', right before sales and profits tanked.

[Q] Can Sony be trusted?

Hey guys. I'm currently using an HTC One and I'm thinking of buying the Xperia Z2 in June. The last Sony phone I used was the X10 Mini and haven't used a Sony since. I wasn't at all impressed by the new HTC One or the Galaxy S5, so basically the only phone left that's even remotely interesting would be the Xperia Z2.
Which brings me to my question: Can Sony be trusted? I have read about several issues with their phones.
Same boat as you. Last sony I had was the standard Sony X10. It was awful. Hated every minute of it. Was not as bad as my nokia 5800 I owned before it though.
Phones since then have been the galaxy S2, galaxy S3, now the LG G2 (best phone so far), and now pre ordered the X2. It looks amazing, and am very excited about it. Might not have it long as im planning (stupidly maybe) to take it to my 3yr old sons swimming lessons and get some underwater video footage of him as he loves swimming underwater! Think the slow motion feature will look amazing. So hoping Sony really is true to their word on it being waterproof

Well, after using some 9 Sony phones I believe this is the only brand which can be trusted so well. In fact I went a step ahead to import their Xperia Ray when it came out some 2 and a half years ago(means no warranty). Not a single issue still, it has fallen face down, been in contact with water, thrown against the wall and it still works with a scratch! Of course, I had to change its battery twice tho, both times after it fell or I threw it in anger, as the battery went a little fluffy and back plate wouldn't completely lock into its place. Recently got the third battery.

Trusted? not really.
Let say this, the quality of the materials is without questioning but with the Software they screwed us from day one on Z1 and with the release of KitKat 4.4 they compleated the mess, which is the worst OS seen on Z1, with all the restrictions.
I own Z1 and now is not worth to sell it to buy the Z2 but everybody who did not buy Z1 I recommend to get Z2 as it is very well improved.
So I think even is Sony cannot be fully trusted I think you will not have regrets to buy Z2.

I have no experience of Sony updates as if yet so cant comment here with an opinion yet. I know im going to love the Z2, the only thing that worries me is battery, but im hoping with a 3200 battery it will last the day as my G2 does with extreme heavy use.
On a side note, i bloody hate pre ordering phones, hate waiting, have zero patience with things like that at least when my phone does come i will have a new shiny sony tv being delivered for free shortly after, nice bonus considering I would have got the Z2 regardless. Besides, if the battery turns out to be a little on the downside on the stock rom, I'm sure you could flash something that improves the battery. That's why we're on XDA.

Well to be fair its actually Sony doing the promotion, just through Vodafone, which luckily for me I am on.
TV Offer: Promoter, Sony Mobile Communications. First 3000 eligible pre-orders only before 09.04.14. TV can only be redeemed after first bill payment, between 08.05.14 to 08.07.14. Airtime agreement required. Excludes business customers, except small business (1-4 connections). TV offer Ts&Cs at vodafone.co.uk/sonyxperia
Soon as you recieve tv vodafone dont want to know. Hopefully this means that vodafone are one of the 'trusted partners' that will get the phone on release.
And yes your right on the battery side, but always better to get it running good from stock first as a good base to build on. I am hoping to be honest that people really do decide to avoid the Samsung, not because I hate them as I dont, but because I want them to pull something special out of the bag for the S6. The S3 was such a special phone and I loved it, still holds its own now, especially with a custom rom.

Don't worry Guys, the battery of Z2 is just massive, I got a hell of day with Z1 and I cannot complain, with Z2 it will be even better.

Any word from Huawei on KitKat

I'm seriously considering ordering this phone, the specs are great but what's driving me is better battery life. I've got a Moto G, which is very nice; however, my battery life has never been good. (My first Android phone was an Huawei and I like the brand very much--my little ole Huawei is still running strong and serves as a cordless VOIP phone in the house.) Has Huawei made any announcements about rolling out KitKat to this phone? TIA

Huawei Device USA will not give a date because the big boys in China will not allow them to. But I know the Chinese Version of the HAM2 is already on KitKat.
kk isn't a deal breaker for me.
Right now, the Mate2 is performing without issues, lockups etc. Once/if kk is released, I'm going to hold off until reports
come back. I am getting to cranky to deal with bugs.
Thanks for the info. The lack of KitKat isn't a deal breaker for me, I was just wondering. I really want decent battery performance, good specs and a decent price and the HAM2 seems to fit the bill. The build quality of my old Huawei was good and from what I'm reading in reviews, this phone seems well built. I'm just about to pull the trigger on Amazon once I decide on color. (I suspect it will be the black one.)

Unless you watch video over LTE 24/7, using it as a phone, web browser etc....I get 2-3 days EASY on one charge. That, and the price are what
sold me.
As elpc has said, there is a KitKat version but it's for the Chinese model at the moment.
When I read the phone reviews on Amazon, one of the reviewers said he was told by Huawei reps that KitKat for the US models would come in either July or August.
I don't know if we'll get it, or when, but I do hope we get L!

Since Huawei is the 3rd largest smartphone maker in the world, why not?
Some friends of mine said you bought a Huawei? Yuck, it's a Chinese phone, they have spyware that sends stuff to China.
I simply answer...what ISN'T made in China, and what company, government DOESN'T spy and send data to someone?
I bought it do to the value, the battery life and the screen. No bloatware, unlocked for $300. Bang for the buck, that's what
I look for.

Exactly this. I'm pretty sure Apple and Google do the same thing. In fact, Apple just admitted to storing data in its Chinese servers. And some guy was arrested for illegal pornography in his Gmail account as well.
Hell, there's the US and German secretaries phone call spying thing too. Everyone spies on everyone nowadays. You can't avoid it.

Samsung $700? Battery sucks, went to downtown San Francisco 8am before even 12 from full battery to low battery warning, I returned it the next day it is been to me for a week so battery is well charge up.
HAM2 I tried watching Netflix yesterday just to test the battery over 4g, it sucks that I just got almost 10hrs may be 15mins short before battery is 10% left and it is just $299, did I made the wrong choice?
But if they don't update to KITKAT before September 11 I will consider returning this. Good thing I bought this on amazon, they pay back shipping you can't go wrong on what you buy.
I entered a chat support from Huawei and they told me KitKat was on the way but they coulndt commit to a date...
Aand as for L they toldme they would make an statement when its out :/

This is probably the best phone I have ever owned. I too had some friends ask about it judging it before knowing what it was all about, after showing them, I teased them for their overpriced phones with inferior battery life.

First , I am a Chinese, so I am supposed to encourage you to buy a phone made by Chinese company, BUT I don't.
Why? Because Huawei is really not a company to support , if you speak chinese, you can get a lot of negative messages from chinese forum about how they do business, bad business ethic, bribe everywhere, etc. You will know how we dislike Huawei.
China development bank provides a huge financial support to huawei , so that they can offer you a smartphone or network devices with very low price, the money actually is from all chinese people,
of course, it is your choice ,but as for me and my friends, we will never buy any products from Huawei in life.

It's funny, I never even gave this phone a thought when I saw the specs, but (now here is the really funny part) after reading reviews of it on the OnePlus One user forum, and the price, I bought one and was really surprised how well it works for having "substandard" specs. It's fast, screen is bright, snappy, no lag, works quite well and that 2-3 day battery is REALLY nice. I could give two hoots if it has the latest greatest OS. JB4.3 is good, not buggy and works. Smartphones are my lifeblood for work and 4 weeks in, this thing has yet to let me down.
I use about 1500-2000 minutes per month on the phone, lots of web use, email, text and photos, and it's great! People are getting hoodwinked by thinking they "have to have" a device with the 2k screens, latest OS to do anything, but all they are doing is wasting money and getting 1/2 a day battery life. Hey, it's your money, but me, personally, I'd rather have some value for my money.

[Q] How to check if the Z2 is branded

Hi
I'd like to get a Z2, but I've heard that in most retail shops in my country the phones are sometimes branded, so I'd like to check that before buying. Is there an easy and fast method to do so?
Thanks in advance

%99 of the time if it comes from a network provide its branded
if it comes from a 3rd party provider or directly from Sony usually its unbranded
this varies depending on your country
The problem is, I've heard that some of the 3rd parties in Poland sell branded Play/Orange phones and some people get to know it, when they get an update from either of those. The weirdest thing is, that in Sony Centre they say that Z2 in my other local shop can be branded, when in that shop they say that their Z2's are not branded. I don't know what to think about it at all. The thing is, that in the other shop the phone is 100$ cheaper and I can check it before buying, so I could check if it's branded or not, only I have to know how. Is it somewhat connected with the service menu?

Sony said "can be branded" if the shop says it isn't branded and it is, you can legally sue them
and branded deviced are usualy cheaper because they are simlocked and/or non bootloader unlockable
From what I've read I can easily ckeck if the bootloader is locked or not (via the service menu).
And for the discussion, in Sony Center they said that the other shop (one of the biggest retailers in country btw) bought those phones from Orange. In Komputronik they said that guys in Sony who told me that are sick in their minds. And I don't know who to trust XD

i think your best bet is to buy directly from sony or a supported 3rd party supplier that isnt this one
:/ safety is often worth the extra money rather then taking a potential risk
It seems I have to. Anyway, sorry for the offtop but I have a question for you. Do you think that Z2 is a good phone to upgrade from my current iPhone 4S? And do you think it would work good and fast for 3 years like my iPhone? Or would you rather buy something else? (G3, M8, Nexus maybe?)

Yes, especially as the prices have fallen now due to the Z3 release. I guess you'll be happy with the Z2.
Thanks for al your answers! I think I'll get a Z2 from my local Sony Center, but if anyone knows a way how to check the branding, please post it below anyway. It may be useful for some poeple

Definatly!
alot of iphone users who love that minimalist ios look and feel often come to xperia for its UI and looks
however, go and play with the G3, and M8 and then come back to xperia
ive noticed some phones take some tinkering before the user can properly decide weather they like it or not
personaly for me id either have a iphone 5S (6 is terrible compared to 5, felt cheap :{ sme people like it i guess) or a xperia simply because i love both phones
I really like the looks of my 4S and iOS 7. I wanted something with bigger screen than in the 5S anyway, so that's why I waited till the keynote and the only things I can say about 6 and 6 plus's relation between hardware, design and price is just... meh
That's why I think about getting Z2. It looks like a bigger and facelifted 4S + from what I've heard the battery is really good in this one And the microsd port is always a nice thing to have

why i think logically you will love Z2
Great battery - 3300Mah Li-ion
plenty of useful features.. if you use them
nice looks.. to me at least
1080p screen
water resistant IP58 Cert
xperias are tough. i beat a Xperia S up for about 3 years and it still works in my brothers hands
Z2 feels tough
micro Sd slot upto 128gb
many more, just check GSM arena or sony mobile website for phone details

Li-ion wears out over time and incrases due to heating
Li-poly wears out due to use and after a long time it will explode
I've just read (and saw at many Youtube vidoes) that the Z2 likes to overhear, espacially while playing games/watching movies and (most of the time) while taking photos and recording videos. Is it really such a common problem?
I didn't read the whole thread but if you plan to flash CyanogenMod on it, then u will lose the carrierbrand anyway.
