Can't open shortened URLs - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

As the title says, I can't won't open any shortened links from Facebook, twitter, etc. Not even in facebooks internal browser, which is garbage anyway. I'm running JellyBeans22 ROM 4.1.2, but it's just the stock browser. Any advice?

any ad blocking or host file software? I'd disable those. If not Id try a different browser if that doesn't work I'd try a different rom. Newer heard of this.

Turns out it was ad blocker built in to the ROM. Rehashed and disabled it and it's good to go.... But now I have ads which bites. Why would an ad blocker block shortened URLs anyway?

need help for adfree

hi all
have installed addfree for android
but dont help me
have adds
can someone tell me, what i have to do, for a adfree evo?
thy
Try rebooting and taking a look at your /system/etc/hosts file, you should be able to see if adfree has modified it or not. Some apps have started getting ads from their own servers so there's no easy way to block them
Just hit download and install hosts. Installing it doesn't do anything, you have to refresh the hosts.

Maybe adaway would work better for you? Free in the market.

Companies are getting smarter and thus ads are getting harder to block. The new Pandora app is swear gets its ads from Pandora servers. Oh well.

I had one pop up last week. First one I've ever seen. Hadn't seen it since. I have lookout installed and do not have or never had any bootleg apps. I don't get it. Those apps need to be pulled and gone.

I have adds in apps
I've had an issue keeping ads away as well. I do think the deevelopers are getting a bit smarter about how they serve the ads.
Here is an old thread on the subject
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664532
It hasn't been updated in quite some time but it might help.
im just absolutely lost how/what is causing the notification popup add that i get which is for "win an ipad2..."
Itll randomly happen and not with a program up and running less its in the background. Its not a txt msg one but actual notification that sends me to a website. I scaned with lookout and all is fine. Also read up on the notification adds and thought it might be the airpush crap but the airpush defender app didn't find any apps using it when i installed it so im at a complete loss now as to why this is happening.

I've never seen the ad you're talking about but I wonder if Sprint is sending it to you. I used to get a bunch of text ads from Sprint until I called them up and told them not to send me anything anymore. You might just be able to call them and have them stop it.
You can never really tell what apps to trust and what not to, I guess.
Take Dolphin for instance, love the browser, but take a look at this.

Not directly "ad" related, but you get what I'm saying.

Addfree Android

Would anyone recommend this app? Reviews complain about continuous updates, maybe malware, anybody tried it before?
-XDA Premium on CM7 Nook Color
It updates alot be cause the host file is always adding more blocked websites. I use it on all my devices. Reboot after you do it. No more ads.

This app is one of the reasons to root your phone. Not malware
I use it on every one of my devices. The updates are to stay on top of the ever growing list of ad servers.
Yeah you can rest assured, this thing is top, not flop.
Thanks all!

Well after installing, updating, and rebooting I tested angry birds and there is still adds... is it supposed to work for everything or just certain things?

Another good option is Adaway. I like it because it has a few more options compared to the last time I was using adfree..
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.adaway
I use AdAway because it blOcks more ads it seems.
As it turns out... I forgot about it for a while and then just checked it out again, and its working fine, definitely a recomended app I'd say. Thanks again for the insight!

This is an essential app for me, I update it manually and have had no problems. Just ad free apps.
Does this just get rid of ads in browsers/game banners, or will it get rid of the Words with Friends ad after each move, and the like?

They get rid of most ads. It depends on what ad server the app uses. It just blocks them using the host file, like you can do on a desktop computer.

Yep it a good app,its so good I have added it to my rom plus Airblocker,it stops push adds.

Ads in notification area?

I've been getting ads in my notification area a lot lately. And I don't even know what app causes it.
When I click on it, it takes me to web browser to a random games site every time.. this time it was street wars..
I uploaded a screenshot of it. So anybody got any idea what's causing it?
Sent from my LG-P500 using xda premium
I use to have the same problem. I am using LBE Privacy Guard. You can set up custom DATA access and denial rights for each app. And you can restrict access to the phones hardware info as well.
You can get AirPush Detector or Addons Detector from the Market. Either one should tell you which app(s) is/are responsible for the notification spam.
Which browser are you using? The stock browser?

Boat Browser.
Yea try using dolphin. Also check out adfree app in the market.

I doubt it has to do with your browser (but I am notsure about that). I was getting a green plus sign(others have gotten a white star with a red dot) in the notification area which led to a webpage about being a prize winner - SPAM. I found the culprit in my case: an app called "Bloat Freezer". Once removed, ads were gone. There are many more apps plus some live wallpapers that do the same thing.
As Telyx mentioned above, try Airpush Detector and Addons Detector (free in market) to find the offending app and then uninstall that app. In my case, airpush detector didn't find anything but when using addons detector and fiiltering for "push notifications", I found the problem.
Good luck!
Edit:
Another option to get rid of this crap:
Airblocker - Airpush Block
ByQ Develop
(get it in the market)

android browser keeps taking me to gotfreebies.org

This happens to me when using Chrome and the stock browser, normally when on xdadevelopers website. I can't remember exactly, but i'm redirected to a site wanting me to install a battery saving app.

Yes I get those too, rather annoying. I hope its just the site and not some app or virus.
I just got one
This happens to me every now and again, and its happened on XDA more than once.
I took a screenshot just now when it happened.
It only pops up in the browser so I assume it is most likely an ad, but it is also aware of my location.
It goes here:
gotfreebies . org/contest/au-ipad-contest/index.php?c=AU-s2
(I'm not allowed to post links so I added spaces)
It's seriously annoying and I sincerely hope something can be done about it.
I'm using a Galaxy tab 8.9 over wifi.
XDA has gotten a lot of ads lately. I hate the flash ads that play at the bottom of the screen with sound. I tend to have a few XDA tabs open and its super annoying trying to find the one thats playing.
Banner ads and flash ads don't bother me that much but these freebie.org ads just fill the entire screen on my phone. Now that is seriously annoying
had same issue. restart solved it for me.

Getting the same ads very annyoing like a pc browser hijacker redirects browser to their site get it mainly on xda but have had it 1 or 2 times on other sites.
Would be nice to know whether this Is an XDA ad or a virus.
I also get it, only on xda. I use ICS+ Browser. Very annoying.
The flash ads with sound on my desktop are extremely annoying as well. I too open multiple windows at once, and it is a real pain trying to find the noisy window.
It is an ad. It is harmless.

Is it an official xda ad? Why do they make it behave just like malware? That's what browser hijackers do. I've never seen official ads do anything as obtrusive as that.
I am getting tired of these ads, there is another similar or maybe associated ad for a site called 'mobrewards.org' too.
I get them on other phone related sites as well, just now I got one on phonearena.
I have found the google adwords complaint page and I'm going to submit a complaint.
Maybe if we all do then they'll do something about it.

Nothing found. It's the browser's being redirected, but only on XDA for me. I never ever see an ad like that anywhere else. No notification ads, no other unusual ads anywhere.

The ad seems to be a browser popup, it is not associated with any apps.
It is targeted towards mobile users and it seems to only occur when using a mobile device.
If you search online for gotfreebies.org or mobrewards.org you will see that the problem is experienced by Android and iPhone users.
these ads are the ones which remind me to enable ad blocking after flashing a new firmware. adaway and root are your friends

Android porn filter?

Hi i was wandering if there is an app or something that blocks the porn websites or those adds with pornography.
I hate when i surf the web an suddenly opens those porno adds,

Root your phone and install AdAway
Adfree is free better than adway ..
Edward Cullen
That won't block porn websites - just in-app ads.
OP - does your service provider not give the option of adult filtering at their end? In the UK it's actually turned on by default and you have to request if you want it off.

Try this...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.trendmicro.tmmspersonal
It gives you a fully functional version for 90 days and then you have to decide whether to pay or not. It has parental block for the internet.
Edit: Actually, a search for parental block apps on Google Play turns up quite a few...

Awesome App that modifing HOST file in your android , and more advance than other ads block app's , that u can update it easily form the application
Suggest "ROM Toolbox"
One of the tools in ROM Toolbox Lite is a hosts-file modifier that can block ads, casinos, porn, and 'risky' domains. Seems to work well and it's nice and simple (as long as you've rooted your phone of course).

I'm also looking for android filtering apps to block sites while surfing or use apps. But it seems it's a little more difficult to make it than developing the features on Mac or Windows operating system. I use Aobo Internet Filter ( http://aobo.cc/aobo-filter.html ) for Mac and PC, but can't find any apps to block unwanted sites for android phones. I want to know if you found anyone, just tell me, thanks.
