I've done some google searching and can't find an answer, but do I need to have the bootloader unlocked to boot a recovery without flashing it with fastboot boot recovery.img? I want to take a backup of what I have before the unlock erases everything. If so, any suggestions for getting a backup with a locked bootloader?
edit: tried different keywords and found a page that says unlocked bootloader is required. so any suggestions on getting a backup before unlocking?

You'll have to unlock the bootloader in order to boot a recovery on the n9. Try helium to backup.

I was trying to unroot my HTC One by relocking the bootloader then through SuperSU, However, I don't have TWRP anymore and I don't want to unlock the bootloader again with some form of recovery. (I have S-On)
Any suggestions to get recovery back?

So you unrooted it with a custom recovery and then relocked your boot loader? Or did you just have root. Are you trying to reroot?

the only way to install recovery is by unlocking the bootloader, no way around it

So when I unlock the bootloader again, I would have to flash TWRP/CWM, then flash a ROM in order to get an OS back?
That's it

If I restored a twrp backup made prior to unlocking my bootloader will it become relocked? I ask because that is what I have done and now flashtool fails to flash a kernel with this error "INFO - FAILED (remote: Command not allowed)".
Second question, would a backup made after unlocking be unlocked when restored?

I don't have, and haven't used TWRP much but I seem to remember something about including or not the TA partition Not sure though...
I now recommend backing up the TA while locked and unlocked.

Will restoring an unlocked TA backup restore me to an unlocked status?
It will, without the data wipe
I am updating this to pass along my experience.
1. I used dual recovery installer to gain root.
2. Backed up TA then used TWRP to make a Nandroid.
3. Unlocked bootloader which wiped data, then installed custom ROM.
4. Had trouble with custom ROM so restored backup which Relocked bootloader.
5. Unlocked bootloader second time, only this time it didn't wipe anything.
So in my case I was able to backup with TWRP, unlock bootloader, restore backup, unlock again and have phone as it was before unlocking. I only bring this up because I haven't seen anyone else mention it, if anyone wants to verify and add it to any of the guides feel free to do so.
I had my bootloader unlocked and s-off. Long story short, I soft bricked my phone because I was having issues flashing CM11 (don't ask...you can if you want) and had to re-lock the bootloader to flash an RUU to get the phone functioning again.
I am still S-off, but when I went to flash a custom recovery (TWRP), I keep getting errors.
Do I need to "Re-Unlock" my bootloader to install a TWRP and flash the CM11 ROM?
If I do, how do I "Re-Unlock"?
If I don't, how can I flash a custom recovery and CM11 with a Re-Locked bootloader and S-Off?
I did search, but couldn't find a definitive answer...
Thanks in advance for your expertise.
You need a unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery. I suggest using the script found here.

So based off of what you have said:
-Your bootloader is still locked (you haven't said 100% for sure that you are unlocked)
-You may or may not be rooted as well (again, you haven't said if you are or are not)
-You want to run stock recovery, which is the recovery that Moto ships with the device, which is entirely useless for custom ROM flashing
This is the guide you need to root and unlock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423

I have twrp backup which i want to restore but i cant because bootloader is locked.
Now I installed different versions of stock rom downloaded from asus website, via recovery and flash tool, but i still dont get volte.
Someone please help me either to unlock bootloader or restore twrp backup or get volte back. Please help.
