Yes, been using linux on the desktop for more than 10 years now. Mostly developing, mostly mathematical related. I've used different distro's, but the last 3 years I've settled on ubuntu as it is quick to set up and all software I need is supported for it.

I hardly play any games. But I'm sure that a lot of games will also run on linux.

There exists something like VMWare, that allows to run one os inside an other. This works both ways. What also is possible is to use wine in linux, with it you can run windows programs from your linux desktop. This works very well, I use it to manage my tracks in MapSource (a program for garmin sport gps).

It could be, there are alot of different ways to run windows/linux together, you will find what best works you. It is for instance also possible to install the two next to each other, then at boot you choose the os you want to boot into..
There exists a couple of different ubuntu forums. Normally you should get a lot of help. When I got into linux, there existed a linux user group (LUG) at my university. You might see if a LUG exists near you.
I use VMware workstation. It's good Its worth the money Im able to run Ubuntu on Windows using this.

Using linux for gaming, it's like using a F/A-18 Hornet, for transporting pets
and about the windows thing, you can even install WINDOWS on windows, if u know what i mean
haha totally agreed D4rKn3sSyS
i use and ubuntu and win7 they are different on many points but imo
on topic
if you want gaming and you like windows interface just stay on it
still if you want to try it ubuntu play alot of windows games (not fully) like no shaddows and directX things..
linux is nice but you need "terminal work" not like windows with ok buttons...
up to you always !

While technical there is no issue to run it on the mini. I think it is more useful to run this on a tablet. For example the eee pad transformer with dock. This 'transforms' your transformer into a netbook..
There is a method that involves setting up a vnc server. This works well, but does not run at the fastest possible speed (though, it is doable). XDA members are working on a native implementation. This would make tegra2 tablets dual boot. Seems like best of both worlds.
Playing and browsing in the sofa: android. Continuing your project on the go or in the library: linux desktop (for example ubuntu).

Java app

Could someone post the java app to run jar files? Dont know if it was in quarcx' 2.2 rom or stock 2.1, but it is gone in 2.3.4 and i really want it.

Have you tryed Google or the android market?
As far as i know there is still no support of any java emulator for 2.2, 2.3 that has succesfully worked. only its suported for 2.1.
Though it has past quite of few months maybe someone has found a way to get it working

There is one, but is buggy and has no arrow control, you need to use a keyboard with arrows and hold them down, I use GO Keyboard. It works fine for touch screen apps, like Top Gear though. It's here

Ubuntu Installer SGP 5.0

You can use Ubuntu on this device using these directions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390351
and using this App. for the installation guide
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zpwebsites.ubuntuinstall&feature=search_result
It is tested to work on both the 5.0 and 4.0.
I take none of the credit, I am just pointing out a cool "app."

Don't have time to try it out yet, but I do have a question about the driver support.
Since it is a full blown linux distro, does it come with usb audio driver, otg support and etc?

You do not install anything other than the one app. You run a few commands to start it. Then you open the app. to connect to the Ubuntu "server." it is actually running in the background like an app. would, but you can exit at any time. Read more on the link that I posted along in this thread.

[solved]Linux/windows ROM

Hi guys,
I've got a little bit stupid question. Is it possible to boot a linux or windows os instead of android? I saw something, if I remember right, there was an app which booted linux os. But it should be like custom ROM. Just want to know .
Thanks

On some devices you can have a native port of Linux, if your rooted you can use my project to install Linux on top of android.
Only way you can get windows is using qume to emulate a desktop CPU as windows can not run on ARM procssors

Thanks, but is it possible to somehow run linux not on top of android, run instead of android? How I imagine it, it should be like a custom flashable ROM .

Well yes in the sense there's no android but its not really a ROM in the sense of the word used here.
Only some devices have native ports as they need unlocked boot loaders and the dev team to get it working

Official Youtube xap file

Does anyone have the first version of the Microsoft Youtube xap file? It may be wise to keep a backup of it before it is updated to include ads. Or at the very least does anyone have version 2 which has disabled the downloads of videos but at least it does not show youtube ads. Some of us can store the xap file on are sd card and install from sd after a factory reset on phone.
Try this: http://dfiles.eu/files/dx6n7i76t
(this is official version from market store)

Thank you sir.
can we sideload if we developer unlock?
can we side load this xap if we developer unlock our phone, can we developer unlock windows phone 8? I am tempted to just pay the $100
No, you can't. XAP files downloaded from the Web Marketplace are encrypted and sideloading is therefore not possible. Also upon installation the license is validated and you won't be able to install outdated XAP files. So basically that copy is worthless at the moment.
Someone on another thread said if you unzip the xap delete the app header file you can then sideload

Wait did you guys say we could install the xap from our SD card?
Sent from my SGH-T899M using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
You can download XAP files from the Web Marketplace, copy them to the SD card and install from there. It will still check if the signature is correct, if the App is still available and if the version you are trying to install is the most recent one. You can't install XAPs from the SD card that are not from the Marketplace.
And you could do it with old XAP-Files (removing the headers that is) but that was way before WP8, so no: you can't sideload Marketplace Apps in any way due to the encryption that so far has not been broken.
I see argh!

I have the xap and a dev unlock account but so far no one has been able to de encrypt marketplace apps and any talk of that, people start freaking out about piracy, I just don't want to give this app up when I switch phones, I seriously use it all the time

Original youtube app is back to the market store: http://www.windowsphone.com/pl-pl/store/app/youtube/dcbb1ac6-a89a-df11-a490-00237de2db9e
As far as I can tell, this is an update to the version after they removed all the "cool" stuff (downloading videos, avoiding ads). So yeah, it's an update, and yeah, it's sort-of like the original app (same AppID and all), but it appears to be missing the features that people actually were excited about when it was first released.
@noelito: if removing PlayReady DRM was that easy, or even practical right now at all, it would have been done a while ago.
I'll stick with my version 1 of the YouTube app then, now that I have internet sharing back and a decent camera on my ATIV S , I am satisfied at the moment with my phone

Sent from my SGH-T899M using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
@noelito If you interop-unlock your device, you can "save" the unencrypted/extracted version to your PC. Then it's a trivial matter to turn it into a side-loadable xap that we can all use!
The thing is google has blocked this app , so even if I do that, the app is useless in that fashion too
