I just purchased a new Verizon branded Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet (Model SGP561), and after I turned it on and checked under Settings>About Tablet>Status>Rooting status, it says "Rooted".
Does this mean the tablet was previously used and rooted by someone? Anyone else with a new Xperia Z2 Tablet that also shows "Rooted" out of the box? If not, what should it say under Rooting status?
Thanks!
I wouldn't complain, saves you some work! If it wasn't rooted it'd say "Unrooted"
Mine says "Unrooted"

I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo on O2 in the UK. They are the only carrier that has said they will not update the phone to Android 4.0 because of bugs. I would like to update the phone and have found that the only way I could do it would be by debranding it and then updating it OTA. I have found some sellers on eBay offering this service for £10, is there a cheaper or even free way to do this?
Thanks

Yes it is possible, but please in future, use the normal size text....
Just read the sticky threads in the dev section.
You shouldnt have to pay for anything
Just as gregbradley says. All I ever needed i've founded here on XDA...
Hey,
I have recently bought an Xperia Z ultra, and when i was about to CM11 it, i found out that the boot loader unlock allowed is NO.
Now where is live, i brought the phone through and import shop. so the procedure to obtain a operator key and send to Sony is impossible.
I can access my fastboot, i have even rooted my phone, but i really want custom roms and kernels to be an option.
I know that the usual answer to this is that its impossible. But i would appreciate if we discuss it to progress on this as i have seen too many people with this issue and i think it needs a solution. I would request the admin/moderators to keep this thread alive.
Now does anyone know why is it impossible ? is it hardware or software ?
any directions or people that i can personally request to work on this ? any leads ? i am really desperate, i really cant afford to spend that much on a phone again.
is the Xposed Framework any possible solution for this ?
any ideas information is helpful......
There is no solution, or one being worked on that I know of. In one thread it has been asked and a very good hardware hacker said that even taking the back off and putting a Xperia into it's maintenance mode you cant unlock a BL for these locked devices.
Have a read of the hard brick thread for the details
there seems to be a way, just a thought.
Upon on reseaerch, i am finding out a Linux command called kexec seems to be favour here. Since it can bypass kernel and force a custom one...
Work in progress for z1 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462799
Just leaving this link for other users like me, who might be searching... And also requesting to post replies here to see how much demand we have for this issue..
sp has something going on too
Xperia sp seems to have been worked upon in this matter recently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2377972&page=7
kexec for ultra
Kexec for the ultra itself

Are there any developers I can call out/plead to regarding this matter?? its really frustrating to have this much of a powerful device and not play with it. I miss CM.
unlocked bootloader if it says no
I had no idea that the sony z ultra had some units that couldn't be unlocked. why would sony do this, it says being able to unlock your bootloader is important to sony. They even gave me an unlocked code from their site. I bought an factory unlocked phone, so stupid that this one here can be unlocked and that one can't. so am I stuck with a locked bootloader now? I sold my Lg because of this crap now I am dealing with it again ****

It's your carrier that has locked it (Rogers, i'm guessing?). There are only a couple of carriers that locks down the bootloader, like Rogers, O2 (i think) and another one that we're aware of.
It was bought factory unlocked from store no carrier involved which makes it even more crazy. I guess I will sell this model and get different one. Does the gpe have this stupid restriction on its model. I really like the 6.4 inch screen and don't want to go down in size. I am already going to get the nexus 6 so I definitely want a z ultra also

It's shouldn't be locked. Only a couple of carriers locks the bootloader. The GPe's bootloader is unlockable.
@BrownDog99 type *#*#7378523#*#* and check if you haven't. I don't think I've seen a factory one they is bootloader locked. What model? And from where did you buy it?
Ya i tried that it says no bootloader unlock. I bought it from a used cell store in toronto. It has a factory unlocked sticker on it, with no carrier apps installed or anything. Maybe it was a carrier phone, weird it came factory unlocked and with no carrier apps installed. I rooted it and put a dual recovery for lb and of course installed xposed. No custom kernel for me I guess. Too bad. I think it is Rogers and Bell that lock down the bootloader. I am impressed with the speed of it for a 800 snapdragon.
Hi folks,
I have a verizon-locked Z2 tablet running KitKat...I am wondering if it is upgradeable in any way. I know the bootloader cannot be unlocked. And I am not in the US so I can't use a verizon sim to activate it.
Also the tablet cannot do OTA updates because it needs a verizon sim to activate.
Is it possible to sim-unlock the tablet and insert my provider sim in there? Will the tablet then be able to do OTA?
Or should I just get rid of it?
Thanks.
Did you find the solution?
I'm on the same boat !! Xperia Z2 Tablet Verizon in Demo Store Mode ! ! terrible, I bought it trough ebay as refurbished but never imagine that it was a Verizon demo store.
Did you find any solution? I'm not in USA either.
Thanks.

Same problem. Until we have locked bootloader - there no way to flash new soft to remove demo mode and half battery charge.
Hey I bought a Verizon refurb Z2 tablet via Ebay too and have that stupid VZW Store demo application running constantly. It takes over the tablet even after killing the process and uninstalling it. I finally found that killing "omav1agentdownloadservices" seems to finally kill that self downloading/running demo mode. I'm not a verizon customer and have no sim to officially activate it, so I don't know how to get OTA updates as well. I'm just happy I can actually use this thing if even under Kitkat....
My solution
I had the same problem. Bought a locked Verizon Z2 tablet from ebay, and sended it to my country.
As obviously im not in the USA, had no chance of veryfing any Verizon sim. The demo mode and the impossibility of updating to Lollipop got me into a solution that worked for me.
I found the .FTF file of the last Lollipop firmware for SGP561 (Verizon Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet), and flashed it. The demo mode is gone in Lollipop, so you dont need to verify any Verizon sim.
Link to the .FTF file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vuadrd234on6fvr/SGP561_23.4.B.0.319_Verizon.ftf?dl=0
For sony devices newbies (like me), here is a link of an actual guide to install the firmware (Skip the Xperifirm steps, as well as the creation of the .FTF file on Flashtool, im already handing you the fully packed .FTF) http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/03/17/guide-to-installing-xperia-lollipop-using-xperifirm-and-flashtool/
Good luck!!

I bought an "unlocked" one from a groupon deal a couple of months back and had the same issue.
I used the instrustions posted above by clintono316.
Unfortunately, I fear I may have relocked my machine by doing it. so your mileage may vary. Its not recognizing the T-Mobile sim fully.I can't get it on the web via the sim.

-Edited to remove redundancies after seeing the above reply and remembering thats what i did. DOH!

I didn't have the sim at the time I upgraded the version. So I don't know.
As an addendum... I called VZ and the woman on the phone said that all the 4GLTE systems are supposed to be unlocked as it is. She suggested that perhaps T-Mobile needed to authorize the tablet's IMEI or somesuch.
I don't know if she is right or blowing smoke but I will check with T-Mobile just in case.

Hi davartens, any chance, after all this years, that you can re-upload the latest lolly .FTF for SGP561?

https://boycracked.com/2019/05/28/o...2-tablet-4g-lte-sgp561-usa-verizon-stock-rom/
however, I found this version doesn't resolve the "half charging" issue. I have one SGP561 which only can be charged to 50%, also can be charged to 50% after flashing this FW. Not sure if the one from davartens will behave different
I recently purchased this phone coming from a Moto G4 plus(which was a year if hell)and cost to performance, I'm very happy with it. It came unlocked
and is one if the only phones I found that works both in GSM and CDMA networks. I have not rooted or unlocked the bootloader as of yet and it's running on Oreo 8.1 which updated itself OTA upon first boot. The cameras front and back are very good(better than the Z2, same as Z2 Pro) and I could ramble on about it's specs but this is not the place, I don't believe.
My question is this, I've noticed that it came already encrypted or at least that's what it shows in settings. I haven't yet inserted an SD card since I'm using 2 sims and I don't know if that would make a difference or not but I wanted to see if anyone here is familiar or has run into this kind of thing before?
Please let me know if any more info is needed and thank you in advance!
BHIM app shows that my brand new A3 is rooted??
Is this normal. How to know if the device is actually rooted or the problem is with the BHIM app
I am thinking about returning the phone? Please give me suggestions
If you just bought the device and has done nothing like unlocking bootloader or etc then it is the apps problem not the phone but if you do have UBL before then it might have detects that...
Most eBay and gearbest phones come already rooted and pre-installed with malware.
I saw it myself and will never buy phones from chinese vendors again.
