Hi, I recently updated my phone to Android 4.4.4 and now I am having this issue: Every time the phone acquires a cell signal, GPS turns on about 10 seconds later and stays on for a long time. This happens even if the GPS and location services are turned off. As a result my battery drains in half the time that it used to. If I stop IQ Agent process, GPS icon immediately goes away until the next time phone reacquires the signal. This happens multiple times a day. I can easily reproduce the problem by toggling airplane mode. I don’t think it’s a conflict with any of the apps because the problem exists if I boot into safe mode. I called HTS but they never heard of it, said they will escalate the problem to the developers, but I don’t know if anything will be done. Does anyone else experiencing the same problem? My phone is not rooted and locked.
Thanks…

That usually means nothing will be done.
I haven't heard of this. I typically recommend backing up your data, and doing a factory reset; as this often (although not always) clears up random bugs after an OTA. Smart of you to eliminate the possibility of 3rd party apps by trying Safe Mode. But there may still be some migrated user settings causing a conflict.

I was hoping to figure this out without doing a factory reset. I know I am not the only one with this issue, I've seen others with the same problem on different forums...

Some (including myself) have noted that this has something to do with carrier IQ services.

I just got off the phone with ATT just yesterday, and I can confirm they are aware of the issue. But seeing how Lollipop is just around the corner, you might want to wait a bit, unless of course you're in dire straits.

The HTC tech also said that Lollipop will be out soon, in fact he said they are in stage 2 testing (whatever that means). I just hope that the problem will not migrate to Lollipop.
I'm having a similar issue with my phone. Been sitting on my desk trying to charge, but it can't because the GPS is sucking away the battery.
Others over at AndroidCentral are complaining about the same thing.

You can turn off the GPS by stopping IQ Agent Service. It should stay off until the cell data connection is lost.
I think everyone should call them so they know it is happening to a lot of people. Otherwise nothing will get done. I am surprised that there is not that much chatter out there. It was hard to even find forum discussions.
Funny I just posted the same question in the generic M8 Q and A section. I just noticed it too. My battery life has not been affected that I can see after going through the data. I've gone and disabled any app that uses the GPS service but it's still coming on so it's not an app or app update that I can tell. I guess I can wait until LP comes out.
So far so good since I've stopped IQ Agent Service. It hasn't popped back up and I've made 5 or 6 phone calls since then.
I think I solved it…
I think I solved it… I believe the app DriveMode was causing an issue. Here is what I think happened. When I got my phone a year ago, I immediately disabled few apps, DriveMode was one of them. I believe the recent update was designed to more closely interact with DriveMode and even though the app was disabled, it appeared that as soon as the phone acquired data connection, it tried to determine whether or not the user was moving. When I re-enabled the app, I disabled it internally (within the app) and I guess that told the OS not to bother determining if the user was moving anymore. Here are the steps: I re-enabled DriveMode, I then went to google play and updated it to the latest version, I opened the app and immediately noticed GPS icon turned on, the screen appeared telling me to enable GPS, I checked ignore check box and left the location service running in battery save mode. I closed the Drive mode app and left it along without disabling it. I did this yesterday and haven’t noticed GPS turning on even once since then.
I hope this helps everyone solve this annoying problem; please let me know if this works for anyone…

I like this idea -
However, I was able to get rid of this issue by disabling the carrier IQ service. I did this using an application called Disable Service from the Google Play store.
Works like a charm, and has the added advantage of disabling the IQ service intrusion.

Just want to throw my $0.02 in here....I'm having hte same issues noted in the thread, and it's murdering my battery life. I typically get 24-30 hours of battery life easily on this phone, but now if i dont spend all day killing IQ Agent, i get about 7. I can't root my M8 due to some work restrictions, so it's all manual IQ Agent task killing fo rme. although I was EXTREMELY active yesterday in killing the service ~30 times throughout the day yesterday, Android System (where IQ Agent lies) still managed to run 2hr 24 minutes of GPS on, according to two different battery/service monitoring apps. This, mind you, all occurred without my actual GPS toggle ever being switched on.
I'm waiting for a call back from HTC, and AT&T punted completely and denied any knowledge of why it would happen (although ironically offering to remote into my phone to "diagnose" the issue, which I could not do becuase I was in transit when I called and they required I remain stationary...)
I'm 100% convinced it's entirely due to the IQ Agent task, or another involuntary watchdog service trigging IQ agent. This task is started under at least two distinct condition, with no fail:
my phone goes between 4G and LTE (Subway, between towers/coverage zones, all flipping day long in my concrete-and-steel office building...)
I make or receive a phone call (can feel teh phone get hot in ~2 minutes while on the phone).
switching in or out of airplane mode (which is really an extension of #1).
I love my M8 like crazy, but I cannot wait until my next phone because I absolutely refuse to purchase anything associated with a cell carrier ever again. Fvck that.
Agreed...DriveMode part of the problem

Agreed. I mostly followed these steps by downloading the latest DriveMode, walking through DriveMode setup, then disabling DriveMode and then stopping the IQ Agent Service. SInce then, GPS has performed as it should, only on demand. I did notice that when switching from mobile to a wi-fi network that requires a sign in that the GPS fires up. But again, killing the service stops the random GPS after logging into the wi-fi. So overall, much better than the constant on/off, but still ATT needs to resolve this at some point.
Have a carrieriq blocked/inactive build in testing so we shall see if it is indeed the culprit by end of day.
I've been testing this build for a couple of days now, and so far the GPS has stayed off like a good little app should. It only turns on when I expect.
Update/Reply From AT&T as of 03/23
Finally!!! An admission from AT&T that they jacked up our phones with their software update back in January. It's only taken a month and a half, 4 calls to text support, 3 attempts to reach their urgent care department (by the way... they are completely incompetent. They call from an unknown number, I normally don't answer but I also couldn't answer anyway due to being at work. They leave a message requesting you call a number in KY and leave a message. Left a message on two different occasions and provided the days and hours they could reach me. Of course they call whenever they want and the process starts all over) in addition to all this, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau that resulted in a call back from a corporate executive. Now the only problem is they don't have a solution for the issue yet and probably won't do anything with the Lollipop update that "SHOULD" be released within the next 15 days. No one should have to go through this but I honestly think everyone should file a BBB complaint just to show AT&T a lesson.

So - was it Carrier IQ? Did they say what was going on?
I know they said they don't have a solution, but it would be useful to know what is causing this. I found that disabling the carrier iq service does the trick, and WNC's ROM, which has it disabled by default, also does the trick.
Thanks for the update. My phone started doing the GPS thing a couple of weeks ago and my battery life has been shot.
The weirdest thing is that my issues only started 2 weeks ago, instead of when the update occurred in January, so ATT must be doing something weird on their network as well

If you gps isnt accurate, or takes forever to lock on, or is just not working
goto
settings--->Location & security---> uncheck vzw location services
try to use Standalone GPS services by itself, if not use Standalone and Google. just make sure the vzw one is off.
I tested with some people and it worked for them too.
WoW.... it really works... Just confirmed it myself. I am rooted, I did NOT do lagfix and updated to DI01
confirmed worked. it took 2 sec and was almost 100% accurate. with all 3 checked it was hit and miss and when it did find me it wasnt accurate and it took anywhere from 3-5 min to find me and it was usually about 1-2 football fields away,, still on old software, no update for me yet and no root
nice find

I have had that unchecked since the phone came out and still had problems. If there was any fix it was from the update.
unchecked... no difference, lock time is still measured around 1-2 mins.

Worked great for me. I was getting fed up waiting on the damn thing to lock onto me while I was driving and needed to find a place quick and directions. Thanks for the heads up.

Take it in to verizon and show them... They will give you a new phone.
So are you guys getting GPS locks in a matter of seconds all the time, even after reboot? Mine takes a few minutes all the time to get a lock, or else is very inaccurate. If I wait for the lock I get accurate to within feet, and it'll stay that way.
Well, I thought that worked for me until I rebooted my phone to see if it really worked. No dice.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong) essentially what you are doing is turning off the cell phone triangulation that google/verizon provide and sticking with just the straight GPS unit. I don't necessary see why turning off the "rough location" would effect the warm up time of the GPS unit, but maybe it actually does.
Just didn't work on mine after my GPS unit was cold.
Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue or software?
Browsing multiple forums brings up slews of the same complaints, but no one has put forth any kind of solution, nor has Samsung.
I have all location services enabled, and I get locks virtually instantly almost all the time, and it's always accurate to within probably a few feet. Maybe I'm just lucky?
I'd hate to say it, but I fear it is hardware, seeing as I have yet to have a lock take more than 10 seconds, usually 4 or less.
This is really the first time I've been on the good side of a widespread issue.

Yeah all of these "fixes" are merely temporary. All they are doing in storing the satelite info so they ock faster. If you reboot and turn off GPS for more than a few minutes it will start all over again. I will be paying VZW a visit tomorrow to see what they will do about since it seems not all phones are affected by this.
And I use my GPS a lot. The other day I was trying to find backway home and my GPS was so far off by the time it locked I was already stuck in traffic, had it locked normally, I would have been home free, my Droid1 would have never done this to me!!
I've only had issues with getting a lock after the GPS hasn't been used for a while. Lately, I've been wondering if some people who don't have issues have some type of app installed that periodically queries GPS? For example, I just installed the Asurion app that is supposed to check my location every hour. I haven't fully tested it yet, but now I'm wondering if this will keep GPS on frequently enough to the point where it won't have to re-start with the delay.
BTW... in early testing (when I first got the phone), I would wait to get a lock (maybe a minute), then after I got a lock I rebooted the phone and I still got an instant lock. So, once a lock is obtained, it seems like it keeps it for a while - even after a reboot. The main times I've had issues have been in the morning after the phone has been charging all night while asleep.

Yeah, I have a fascinate and so does my girlfriend. Locks both take minutes at the very least.
If this is hardware or if anyone has some legit theories, I'd like to know before my 30 days is up so I can de-root mine and exchange them both for phones that actually get a lock in a decent amount of time.
My Photon has been acting up today. It has frozen on a black screen four or five times, requiring a battery pull each time. Also a couple of random restarts. The same thing happened once yesterday, but it has come back with a vengeance today.
Anyone else experiencing this? Bad phone? Not rooted, updated prl/profile, etc. Been on the road, so no chance to try the MR, so I don't know if that would solve anything or not.
I'm a Sprint Launch Ambassador supporting the Photon. I have seen reboots on my own device but it was due to a 3rd party live wallpaper I had downloaded and was running. When I removed it, the device was stable again. Does your device do this in a factory reset state with nothing installed 3rd party app wise and no SD card?

Matt - thanks for your quick response.
I am not running third party or live wallpapers. Just a pretty static experience.
I have installed quite a few apps, of course, but I haven't had the time, at the moment, to do a factory reset (and frankly, doing a factory reset is a pain, and I'd rather not have to do it). My installed program list is also pretty standard (Google apps, Facebook, Pandora, Angry Birds).
I do, however, have a SD card mounted, which I actually considered might be the problem. Is there any clue about why this might be causing the problem?
Interestingly, it hasn't happened in the past few hours.
Are there any reports of specific applications that are causing issues, or reports that this is a widespread problem? I could forgive it a bit more if it restarted more than hard crashed, but the lockups with no warning on my primary business phone are rather problematic.
Also, any word you might be able to give on updates that might come out in the next week or two?
My main concern is just that I don't have a bad piece of hardware. I love the phone - as something to make phone calls, it's one of the best pieces of hardware I've ever had. If it's an issue where I need to switch the phone out for a different one, I'm fine with doing that, but I'd like to know before the warranty runs out.
Me too
I just want to chime in and report that I have seen some random black screen lockups on my new Photon. It usually requires battery removal to fix, but once while I was trying to pry the back cover off (it's a very stubborn cover), the phone came back to life.
No SD card, stock wallpaper.

Locked up after five minutes off the charger this morning. For what it's worth, the phone seems to get very warm when it is locked, possibly indicating a high power/processor usage.
I don't know if others have experienced this as well.
Random lock twice today when I went to answer the phone..and one time at 6 AM it was my 84 year old mother who had fallen.

Do you know if this actually solves the lockup issues?
So, I've only had my LGOG for a day and a half and I am having issues connecting with WiFi. At first it worked fine but when I left the coverage area and return a few hours later it would not connect. Tried turning off the WiFi but it kept turning itself back on. I reboot the phone and it works fine as soon as it boots up it connects the WiFi no problem. It is my work WiFi and I had no issues connecting to it from either my iPad nor my HTC One X that will soon find it's way to eBay thanks to this beautiful LGOG. If no one else is having issues, I will call AT&T and have them switch it out. I just wish there was an easy way to back up everything, I mean my home screens and app locations exc. It takes so long to set everything back up the way I find most useful.
WiFi on my device has been excellent.

The Wifi performance of this device is unbelievable. I get the best speeds I have ever seen with any device including PCs. It's either a faulty device or maybe your work has strange security settings?
I had this same problem with my LGOG and my home wireless network. It just would sit and try to connect until I rebooted the phone.
That was on stock though. I have not had any more problems with it after flashing the base rom.
My work has standard WPA settings and it was connected fine yesterday. I left again during lunch and when I came back, same problem and had to reboot the phone. AT&T is sending me another one already and a free case. Can't be too mad about it I guess and at least the phone reboots fast.
Have you tried using the ATT smart wifi app? Fixed the exact same issue for me.

Twice My O.G. wouldn't connect to wifi networks even though it had connected to them in the past. I tried to turn it off and on and scan for the network that I am in range of and it wont show any networks it just says "not in range" when I am in range. So to remedy the situation I turned the phone off and then on. It has only done this to me twice but it's a real nuisance because both times I needed wifi. My phone is stock.

I wish my wifi would stop re-enabling itself. It's chewing up my home bandwidth.
I have been having this issue as of late. It seems to have developed this habit in the last week or so. At first I thought it was Time Warner trolling me but it started happening at work. Something tells me it has something to do with the stock At&T Rom putting the wi-fi radio to sleep and not being able to bring it back online. Reboot fixes it most of the time but sometimes it takes a couple attempts. I have been hesitant to mod this phone still because I would really like to see CM working well before I flash. Also my instinct tells me another possible culprit could be IPv6 on certain routers. That, however, is far less likely unless someone with a decrapified Rom has experienced this issue as it would be a cross platform issue in this case. Anyone else have any insight? Otherwise it's time to get rid of the Att rom.

Same issue here. This is my second LGOG and have been happy with both except for some minor glitches on both with the keyboard freezing up as well as with the WiFi not re-connecting after leaving the area. A restart normally fixed both problems. My first one bricked after rooting and removing all of the bloatware (the phone checks for certain apps upon booting to keep you from removing stock apps). Tried a fix but I couldn't get a Rom at that point as the phone had been out on the market for under a week. I haven't messed with it since but I may try a new Rom and be able to fix the WiFi and get rid of all the bloatware that way.
Just got this ROM running today. No more WiFi issues at all. Some minor ui bugs I am OK with.

Seems like, as usual, At&T bloat ware is the culprit. I experienced the same on my Aria and Inspire. Hope this helps and good luck.
Also I had the keyboard problem but that went away when I switched to the Android default keyboard. One of the other reasons I decided to root was because rather than freezing, the Android default keyboard started typing then the auto correct broke and stopped displaying the words unless you touched the area you were typing in. It really bugged me when it started doing it right after I factory reset. Weird huh?

LG Optimus G Wi-Fi Receiver Disconnect Issue
Funny...I've had some weird home wi-fi issues on two of these.
To explain, I bought mine in December, stock OS of course, and immediately noticed it turning off my wi-fi every time I tried switching between the two home wi-fi SSIDs I created when I upgraded to DD-WRT. This also occurred outside my house, but stopped shortly after the nearly-immediate Android OS upgrade came over (and forced me to install it, I might also note; I'd read the thing was just more AT&T bloatware, but two or three boots later, apparently I got no choice, and it auto-installed).
The good news was, somehow, this 'update' somehow stopped the thing from turning the wi-fi off when I switched between IDs (my base router has a 5G 2nd network which I wanna use when I'm around it, but DD-WRT won't support, as far as expanding it--thusly, I have another 2.4GHz signal I use and relay out around my yard).
That bad news is, though, that I screwed up the phone with the Root Toolbox (Lite) by merely fiddling with their bootanim settings on that original phone. And I mean bricked it, solid.
I'd never bricked any phone, so this ticked me off. Luckily, I was still within 2 days of my 30-Day Best Buy in-store replacement warranty, so I took it back, they fiddled too, and gave up on it.
Hence, my 2nd phone...which now, even after the system update direct from AT&T, still turns off my wi-fi every time I try switching to that 2nd SSID, so I'm left wondering if it was even the same update; I don't think I did anything else, and can't see it as a settings issue, because it did it right out of the box, and the first one stopped after the only system update before I got a chance to even figure ANY user settings out, much less any network ones.
So, now I'm 'going shopping' for 'some PlayStore app' that will skip this B.S. and automatically connect to the strongest home wi-fi signal (within reason--sometimes they're equally strong), without obnoxiously turning off my wi-fi receiver as I look at it.
This kind of malarky could spoil some phones for some people, but I'll struggle along due to the speedy quad-core in it [sigh...wah!].
I guess I'm a big baby, seeing as how I don't write one iota of code, but my personal haughty view is that any dedicated wi-fi devices should have better wi-fi connection than any Windows OS made...and, so far, this'n doesN'T!
What a dumb thing to let happen in such a potentially awesome phone...[AT&T!!!]
This might work or not but can't hurt to try. Apparently some people in the new snowleopard JB thread was having similar issues and for a few, changing the security from WPA2 to WEP worked. Although mines been good and fine on WPA2 but worth a try.
Using wep in 2013 is beyond retarded.

Glad you called out the 'behavior', and not the 'member', though...
but enough of the technicalities...I'm still looking for solutions...beyond blaming AT&T (too easy), or even the strangeness of getting into blaming some weird kind of manufacturing errors (QC at best), I'm left waiting for a substantial OS update (like, oh a better place of decimal, perhaps?), or worse, an app...anyone look at the state (and sheer number) of 'wi-fi' apps? Anybody here can guess, they number in the thousands, and a Play search for 'wi-fi' gets you astronomically different results from 'wifi', even, so I'm not sure I need to be looking at that.
Maybe it's even somehow that, with the first phone, I noticed this, and somehow added my own home network to the AT&T Smart Wi-Fi 'bloatware' that came with the phone (not the worst evil they've ever done, so far, BTW--it does exactly what I imagined should be going on in the background while you're driving around, indexing locales with free Wi-Fi for you to choose to save later...an idea I would call 'Tarzaning', if you get my drift).
I'm gonna try changing two settings in the AT&T 'Smart Wi-Fi' bloatware to 'My Spots' temporarily, at least, to see if it'll latch onto my home stuff more aggressively. I just can't wait to report back my fantastically successful findings here (right after I buy the domain name 'snarkasm.net').
Oh crap...it's already taken.
Is the AT&T smart wifi thing enabled by default? I can't remember. I thought it sounded useful so I played with it a bit but ultimately I didn't like the way it worked so I disabled it.
Still wanted some way to auto-enable/disable wifi. I didn't have anything to go on, but I picked up "Smart WiFi Toggler" which seems to work well. It uses location-based rules (based on cell signals) by default. I also use AutomateIt to turn off mobile data once wifi has been on for 1 minute, and turn on mobile data immediately when wifi disconnects. I have no idea if this saves me any battery life, but I do it anyway.
Past 3 or 4 months my VS996 has been freezing or locking up randomly.
When this happens, the phone is not in use . It's asleep in my pocket, or on my desk, or on my night stand. I have to hold volume button and power to restart it. When it comes back up, everything looks fine.
I have done a factory reset, tried uninstalling apps, and most recently got the phone replaced under LGs 2 year promise warranty. One week in and the replacement phone has started freezing just like the old phone.
My wife has the exact same phone and runs many of the same apps with no issues. My phone is stock android, not rooted and no mods. This is frustrating and I don't know what to try in order to troubleshoot.
Is there an app commonly known to have issues on the V30 (such as nova launcher)? Or is there a logging app i could install to capture info about why it crashed/locked up?

No, Nova launcher works great.
The fact that your replacement phone is now acting the same way is a clue. The problem is probably going to be a "rouge" app that is receiving/sending ads in the background. Just the other day was another report of almost 250 apps found in Google Play store with ad malware, all from Cooltek. A few months ago similar situation with hundreds of other apps -- where in the background ads and videos were being played (user never saw them, but the process was running), so the companies would get advertising money.
It's going to be an app you have that your wife doesn't.
Had a friend who kept complaining to me her V30+ "Thumbnail Gallery" app (or some such silly name) kept closing and her phone was acting weird. I asked why she was even using that app. She said that's how viewed her pictures. I said no, a gallery app comes with the phone. She couldn't even remember where it came from. She said maybe a friend told her to install it. I told her to uninstall it NOW. I need to see what else crap she has installed... because she's always complaining about her phone. None of the other friends/family complain about their V30 and mine runs smooth as does my wife's. So, I know my friend's phone must have more ad malware apps on it.

Yeah, I was pretty bummed when my replacement started because I knew it meant i was going to be sleuthing through apps trying to find the culprit.
I am usually pretty good about recognizing shady apps. That's why i was hoping maybe there was an app just known to have this kind of issue with the V30.
Also, I have been trusting google play protect to alert me of any suspicious apps. Is it safe to say there could be a malicious app installed, but that play protect might not find it?

Yes, google "cooltek ad malware" for most recent news.
There were many other apps discovered a few months ago, where the users never saw the millions of clicks on ads that were being generated. They were just running in the background.

I'd suggest starting with only the apps you and your wife both have. You could use Titanium Backup to freeze the others, for example, or just uninstall them. While you're there look for odd looking apps - some apps will install companion bits which is where the malware resides, for example. Then, stay that way for a while and see how it goes... if it solves the issue, you know it's one of those apps.
Depending on how many unique apps you have, you can add them one at a time or a few at a time, then let it run that way for a while, etc. Repeat until you find the app or apps that cause the issue.
In the first step, if you can't figure out which apps are good/bad, you could simply factory-reset the phone and then add ONLY the matching apps, then work forward from there...
Hello urushiol, I have the same problem as you
I've bought off ebay a LG V30+ H930DS 128go to replace my laggy LG G5 at a pretty good price (150€). The back cover was crack, so I replaced it with a 10€ one from aliexpress.
Unfortunately the phone randomly freeze, like once every day or two making it horrible to use it as an alarm for work, and using it. When it happens, power button doesn't do anything, I need to do the Volume - min + power button to restart the phone.
When my phone was in the pocket, the screen is black (I thought it was shutdown) but then it happens when my phone was on my desk, and saw that always on display was working but phone isn't waking up with power button (then I knew it just freezes).
Battery health is good according to battery apps, already tried factory reset, I use the same apps as on my G5.
I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem or software, if I have the same problem as you, it must be software then.
Weirdly enough, my phone hasn't freeze since four days, i don't know why. (I use device uptime to see).
But even it it looks like it doesn't freeze much right now, I totally do not trust this phone as an alarm for work so I think I'm going to change the phone for something else. I had the G3 and G5 and I never had issue with them freezing.

This is extremely similar to my issues. I have started using a tablet instead for my alarm. I have nearly been late for work several times due to it locking up in the night.
I think i may have found the app that was causing my issue at least. 5 days without a lockup now. Carrier services. I had installed this app knowing that RCS roll out was on the horizon, and i wanted to be ready. If anyone else has this app installed on Verizon with no issue I think i just got lucky with not having a lockup and it might lockup any day now. We'll see. I'll keep testing.

It has been 15 days without freezing for me.
I have a "no carrier" phone so no Verizon app or other carrier related things.
Do you have OnOff app ? (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.onoffapp.app)
I've uninstalled this app (and maybe one or two others) and it seems like since then I don't have freeze anymore.

Carrier services is mostly used by people who aren't on verizon, because unless you have a Pixel, verizon hasn't supported it. Hopefully this is changing soon so I installed it a bit early. Hoping this was my issue. I haven't heard of OnOff before.
All other apps i had were from major companies. Accept this one, a game:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h8games.helixjump
I also removed it, but did have one lockup after removing it and before removing carrier services.

Ok I didn't know, I'm not from USA. I don't have RCS installed and don't have this game neither.
I have the LG-H930DS Rev.1.1 with Android 8.0 April 2019 security patch - V22j-HKG-XX. Everything is stock on mine, stock launcher, no root etc...
Now I just have a jack problem, where I hear only from one ear depending of how the jack cable is twisted, I will try to change it without breaking the back cover.
I have as SM-G991U (256 GB S21 US version, stock everything but using Nova Launcher) that is randomly freezing/crashing then rebooting on me 1-2 times/day. Does android have any kind of crash log I could look at to try and figure out what's causing the problem? On the samsung forums, their support reps suggest running in Safe Mode, which I have, but it's not very useful because I can't reproduce the problem on demand and it usually happens 1-2/day, but sometimes less, so unless I just ran in safe mode all the time, that wouldn't tell me much. Plus, it would only tell me it's an issue caused by one of a hundred or so apps which, again, is not helpful.
So I'm hoping there is a crash log or something somewhere because I have no idea what triggers the crashes. The other night, it was sitting on a wireless charger, the screen wasn't on, then all the sudden it rebooted. It's not specific to any app or anything I'm doing. If there are no crash logs (which would be frustrating and disappointing), any other troubleshooting ideas are welcome!
Look for a memory leak. Typically a poorly written 3rd party apk.
Try clearing system cache.
Make sure auto restart isn't enabled...

Hi mate
For logs info check here and here
You can always flash firmware , using home_csc , to avoid factory reset the phone , if the problem is system related it will help
If is app related
Try booting in safe mode to see if problem goes away...

Thanks! I'll definitely try these out. I tried safe mode, the trouble is it's not really great as a diagnostic because the phone will go from 4-24 hrs between resets during normal operation, and since a phone in safe mode isn't terribly useful, it's hard to keep it in safe mode for long enough to see if that fixed the issue, if that makes sense. And then, if it did fix the issue, it just narrows it down to 1 out of a hundred apps! But maybe I'm missing something. Is there additional information I can find if I run in safe mode that would help suss out the problem?

Thanks! I know how to clear cache but not how to check for memory leaks. Do you have a tool you'd recommend to do that? And I had never heard of auto restart before, so thanks for that. I confirmed that it is NOT enabled (that would have been a face palm moment!).

Is not easy , you just need to be methodic
See if you can find anything useful in the logs first
Reflash firmware , use home-csc , see if it help
Have you notice if the phone fails under any specific circumstances?
If that does not help and if you can really relate the problem with any specific app you may try to freeze or uninstall suspicious app and let it run for a day , Package disabler app is a good option , it is easy to enable or disable app but is not free, you could try this one , is a debloater tool , it allow you to disable app... may be easy that having to uninstall / install by hand
I'm also having the same problem. Had the phone since June, it didn't start to occur until late August, which leads me to suspect it is an update related issue.

I'm glad you posted today, I've been meaning to post again here because I tried troubleshooting and am still having issues. In fact, it crashed twice today when I was trying to send a text message.
I installed one of the log applications (can't remember which one at the moment) but it wasn't really helpful. They didn't seem to catch any information related to a crash even though they were logging data at least twice when it crashed.
Then I tried reflashing using home-csc using ODIN and that ended up soft-bricking my phone (and yes, I followed all the instructions and used home-csc) so I had to reflash everything and do a full factory reset. That seemed to help, reducing the crashes from once/day to once/2-3 days for a few weeks, but now it's back to ~once a day (sometimes more, sometimes less).
So if anyone has any other idea, I'm all ears. When I was reflashing and stuff, I noticed in the recovery mode (or whatever it's called) options that you can look at logs. Does anyone know if one of those logs would have crash-related data or any other ideas of what to try? This is incredibly frustrating, especially that it's persisting after a factory reset. Argh!

So what I tried to do is roll back all the default google app updates. Ex: Android system webview, Google app itself, etc etc. I factory reset it without backing up any apps (but pictures and messages etc), It was working for a few days and then it happened again. Which further reinforces my thinking that my problem is software based.

So I'm curious why you think that means it's a software issue. If this isn't a widespread issue with the S21 and after we've both done a factory reset and still have the issue, that makes me think it could be a hardware issue. Of course, there could be some software incompatibility with an app that most people don't have installed or a bluetooth connection or something, which is why I really want to find a useful crash log (and find it rather absurb how hard it is to find a useful crash log on android, come on guys, it's a mature OS, some kind of crash log seems pretty basic!), because otherwise, it could be a ton of issues and I can't reproduce it. Ugh.
The reason is that the "few days" after the reset and restoring pictures, messages (but not apps) from backup, where there were no crashes at all (where previously it would happen at least 2 times per day).

How did you disable chrome and what other google stuff did you disable? (There's obviously quite a lot of google services that can't be disabled)
After the most recent monthly update, my phone has gone from rebooting multiple times/day to once every 2-3 days, which is more manageable but still super annoying. It is incredibly frustrating to me that there are no good tools to troubleshoot a crash (at least that I've ben able to find). Honestly, it's driven me to consider an iPhone for the first time in my life .
My trouble is back... I will be scheduling a fix with samsung soon so I can RMA it
Check the below link. This seems to be a hardware problem which got solved after Samsung replaced the motherboard.
Samsung Restart problem
So I bought this phone for my wife. Since I received the phone, after a day the phone started crashing whatever app she was on and then take you back to lock screen without having to go through a full restart process but it was definitely a restart as you would need to enter your pin again as opposed to fingerprints.
Since it was within 15 days of purchase I returned and reordered another one from Samsung, and to my surprise exact same issue. What are the odds of having two brand new phones having exact same issues.
This leads me to believe it must be a software issue. I just received this 2nd new phone last Friday.
Yeah, I think what I was experiencing was a hardware issue (it definitely went through the full restart process, not what is described in the previous post). And from the link posted by sandystays above, it looks pretty common. I contacted Samsung support and was not impressed at all. They walked me through a number of troubleshooting steps that weren't helpful then had me take my phone to UBreakIFix. I did, they ran a diagnostic and their tools couldn't find anything wrong so they said Samsung should replace it.
Contacted Samsung, told them I had taken it in. They said I needed to take it to a technician (again, right after telling them I just had). They then said, oh, you'll have to mail it to us and you'll get your phone back in 7-10 business days. Their suggestion for what to do for a phone in the meantime? Buy a prepaid phone then return it when I get my phone back (which a) is unethical and b) wouldn't work anyways since they're locked). Ridiculous. They also admitted that this is a very common problem, so I asked why they just won't send me a replacement device if it's so common to which they had no real answer, just "that's our policy".
Eventually, I contacted T-mobile (my carrier) and was very pleasantly surprised. After me telling them the issue and the steps I'd taken to troubleshoot it, they sent me a replacement phone (recertified, but still) that arrived in 2 days. WAAAYYYY better than Samsung. The entire process made me a bit jealous of my wife's iPhone. If she had had a similar issue, we could have taken it to an apple store and not had the whole "our policy is that you have no phone for 7-10 business days" nonsense from Samsung AND the backup and restore process is still way better on iPhones than on any android I've ever owned. How there is no easy and reliable backup/restore mechanism on android after so long is beyond me.
Bottome line: if you have a similar issue, it's very likely a hardware problem (my replacement phone has been fine for 3 days now). And avoid Samsung support if you can!

On the second phone I still have the 2wk window to return. I am contemplating if I should just return altogether. I had bought an s21 Ultra as well and that seem to be working OK.
Two s21+ phones with same issue, what are the odds of hardware problem? But what if it is the entire batch that is bad.

Your issue sounds different to me. Mine definitely fully rebooted, I have no idea what is going on with yours, it sounds like your crashes are locking the phone or something, that could definitely be software. Good luck!
