Samsung Galaxy S4 cellular network not working after flashing firmware - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am completely stumped after struggling with this problem for the last 3 days. I'll explain what happened in detail.
I loaded a custom rom for my phone, Liquid smooth rom, to be specific. I tried to encrypt my phone, but after 3 hours it only showed the bootloader and did not show any noticeable signs of progression, so I rebooted and factory reset to try and fix my phone, as it could not mount the internal sdcard. Factory reset did not work, so I downloaded a stock firmware version for my country and phone, from sammobile. A friend suggested that I try and get the pit details from heimdall, but heimdall could not. Friend then suggested that I reload the usb driver for the phone through Zega, and then try and try and print the pit details again. It still did not want to print pit details, and the stock firmware finished downloading so I just flashed it (first tried XFE version firmware).
Flashing went fine, cellular network did not want to work. I then flashed the custom rom, again, and the cellular network still did not want to work. I downloaded a different firmware version (XFA), and had the same result. I tried a factory reset, no result. I tried flashing again, no result. I eventually tried different combinations of the various firmwares available, no result. Today I also tried downloading a firmware version from April 2013, to see if it will make any difference, and no result. I tested my sim card in another device, and it worked fine. I tested a sim card identical to mine in my own phone, and the network still did not work. I tried various combinations of factory resetting, installing custom roms, flashing firmware, and nothing works. It does not want to detect my sim card, but before the encryption process my network worked fine. I also tried taking my sim out, and leaving it out for a while. I tried turning my phone on with the sim in, and it didn't work.
Any ideas, please?

What happened is you botched your device because you interrupted the encryption process. You could try to unencrypt the device. If that doesnt work then I am not sure what else to try. Mainly as the bootloader in now encrypted. Before you say it, No factory resetting doesnt remove the encryption.
Never interrupt the encryption process.

I considered that possibility, but the device works fine since I flashed the firmware. It is only the cellular network that does not want to work. Having flashed the stock firmware, it should be completely unencrypted, therefore all services should work fine, or at least so I thought. Has the encryption corrupted the device's ability to detect the sim?

No flashing the stock firmware will not unencrypt the device. Yes by having the bootloader encryption corrupted because you stopped it that most likely corrupted the ability for the bootloader to load the files for reading the sim card. I would also check your IMEI. If that is all 0 or n/a then that could also be another reason.

That got me thinking, and so I tried something. I encrypted the phone through the stock firmware, and then decrypted it. This made no difference. So I thought more about what you said, and if the bootloader is the issue, I should flash a bootloader with the proper files and that should solve the problem, if that is indeed the problem (and if that is possible). I haven't been able to find a bootloader than I am able to flash for my phone though.

Atrix reboots constantly

I know there's a few posts on this, but looking for advice specific to my symptoms. The problem started off with Android media process using up a lot of cpu each time the phone was powered on. It gradually got worse and started rebooting when this happened. Started off as once or twice a day. Then got worse and worse. I had been on a bell atrix ROM (2.3.6) for about a year.
Tried flashing a number of roms, and making sure to clear caches and factory reset each time. Tried numerous versions of the CWMRecovery, no good. I notice that it noly seems to restart if it tries to communicate wirelessly (wifi or 3g seemingly). If I just leave it in cwmrecovery, it stays on fine. If I leave it at the first motoblur setup screen, without entering wifi settings, it stays on fine.
So I guessed it may be related to the radio. Installed a UK radio, bell original one and a euro one to no avail
Is there anything else I can do before I give up, or is it hardware?

just had a look around and came across this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1884381 . Forgetting the Jb reference it might be an idea to follow the steps and see if that helps.
If it were me, I would do a complete system wipe first (CWM>mounts and storage>format system, data, preinstall, osh) and then reinstall a rom (I would recomend CM7.2 to start). I also might be inclined to take the external sd card out as well before restarting phone and see if that helps (going down the corrupt media file route)
Good Luck!

Thanks for this, I never spotted the mounts and storage section for formatting before. Looks to be good to get a clean wipe
Will try now
I managed to get the MROM rom on to it, and it has stayed on for about 30mins now with wifi on.
However, it doesn't boot normally, it says 'Modem did not power up, starting RSD protocol support'. I have to choose Boot Android (no BP) to get it to boot ok. What would make it fail like this?
Is there any way to make the phone always boot android by default?
Another thing to add: I can't add any APN. If I add one and save, it doesn't save.

I can see that i am missing a boot.img to make it boot properly. Where can I download it?
A boot image always comes with any ROM, and MROM is no exception. If you sucessfully flashed the ROM, you've flashed the boot image too, I'm not sure why you think it's missing. But if you really want to reflash it, you can always extract it from the ROM's zip file.

Alright, looks like I misunderstood the function of the boot.img. Any idea as to why it would not load the OS without me prompting it to boot android with no bp?
What is the best process to follow before flashing a rom?
I was doing factory reset, clearcache and clear dalvik from CWM. And I have started doing CWM>mounts and storage>format system, data, preinstall, osh now too.
Is that sufficient to get a good clean slate to start fresh?
And what's the best way to flash the radio? I have tried moto-fastboot radio radio.img, but that seems to stop the OS from loading. I assume the radio be installed after the ROM?
Tried an older gingerbread Bell rom, and same problem. I can only get it to boot by choosing boot android(no bp).
I also can't add an APN to it. I create it, save it and it doesn't save it to the list.
Found a fix here for the APN problem on ICS, but wondering if there's an equivalent on Gingerbread?
'Settings --> More... -> Uncheck 'Enable alt OEM telephony code' and 'Enable alternate getIMSI code'. Then reboot, and now you can add your own apn. '
No idea really, sorry. Kinda seems to me for some reason it's your bootloader that's having issues, not the ROM.
Still cant get it working, can't add an APN.
Replaced the SIM, same.
Noticed that the IMEI and baseband are listed as unknown, and think it's related. So I tried flashing a few radios.
Bell radio stays on about a min, then reboots phone
UK radio reboots once OS has loaded
French radio reboots once OS has loaded
I am based in Ireland, using a phone that was originally Bell Canada. Which radio should I try flashing?
Have you tried AT&T 36p or 37p radio?
No dice. What is the standard process with the radio zip? I have been extracting to a folder, then using moto-fastboot to clear the cache, then install the radio.
Am I missing a step or 2?
Why were you extracting it? Most radios come in a flashable ZIP, which means you flash it through recovery. No extracting.
I always got an error trying to install the zip in CWM. So installed img from fastboot instead. I'll try the newer zips from CWM.

I get error 'assert failed' ...status 7.installation aborted..'trying to install both ATT radio zips via CWM, and status 0 trying Bell radio zip
Update on this:
I got a new phone a few days ago, and had trouble adding an APN (same problem it wouldn't save). Problem was it was not reading the sim correctly. I had some sellotape on part of the card. Removed this, and I was able to add the APN no problem.
I have cleaned the contacts on the sim card reader, no luck.
I am convinced that this is the faulty part though. When I go to add an APN, it should automatically populate the MCC and MNC from the sim, but it doesn't.
Sorry to bump an old thread but...
I have left this Atrix aside for a few months, and wanted to try it once more before giving up entirely.
It reboots when I use 3g or wifi. If I leave it offline or in cwm mode, it stays on ok.
Any ideas? Is it definitely hardware? (Have tried about 4 different images)

Does it reboot if you put it in Airplane mode, then connect to WIFI only?
My Atrix randomly reboots if I have the cellular radio on, but if I put it in Airplane and only use WIFI, its very stable. I tried dozens of radios and ROMs, nothing seems to help, so I've chalked it up to some flaky hardware.

Can't get back to stock

I was testing the Sky Note 4.3 leak port from AT&T and everything was working fine. I had data, signal, mms, sms, wifi (after the fix) and all. But I got a bit greedy and tried to flash the Air Commands feature. What I didn't realize ( I was watching a show at the same time) is that I flashed the MJ5 baseband from the International Note 2, GT-N7100. Ever since then, nothing is working "properly." I can flash ROMs normally, but if I flash a ROM that is NOT 4.3, it says my internal storage is 0/0 bytes.
I've also lost my signal/data/imei/etc and it always shows baseband unknown (I have a efs backup folder, but it doesn't seem to read it properly). I can SOMETIMES get signal back when I reflash Jedi X19, but the occasions that it works, data still doesn't. If I reflash Sky Note 4.3, internal storage goes back to normal, but still don't have imei and what not and it says baseband unknown. I've already tried reflashing modems, but they never read.
Now I've tried restoring to stock using the pit file and stock rom, but it never works. the pit file doesn't repartition. If I flash the root66 stock firmware, it works, but goes into a boot loop. My startup logo also shows "Samsung Galaxy Note II GT-N7100." It thinks it's the international version??? I even decided to give it a go and tried flashing the Pit file for the international version and it WORKS. It repartitions it easily. However even with that, I try flashing roms and they work, but the internal storage problem and baseband problem still remain.
I'm thinking that if I wait until the official update comes out, I could get the official 4.3 baseband and firmware and maybe it'll work? I've tried the param_sboot_tz file and it gets stuck on sboot. If I just use the param_tz file, it gets stuck on tz.img. I don't know what else to try to get my phone back to normal. If anyone could help or somehow give a suggestion that I haven't tried, I would truly be grateful. Anyway, thanks for reading.

[Q] Galaxy SII: Error While Searching for network- On all custom roms

hey guys!
I have samsung galaxy s2 gt-I9100. Whenever I install a custom rom, everythings works fine but i am not able to use mobile network and i received "Error while searching for networks" when I go to settings>>Mobile networks>>network operators. The IMIE number is fine.
I have tried many roms including:
--cm-10.1.3-i9100
--cm-11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-i9100
--pa_i9100-4.42-20140708
--pa_i9100-4.45-20140729
--Slim-i9100-4.4.4.build.9.0-OFFICIAL-8301
The last rom which worked fine was RootBox-JB-i9100-V4.0. All roms released after this rom have this issue.
I have searched for issue on google and tried various solutions but so far no success.
Please Help!
And can you guys suggest me any rom which is not based on CM?
Go to settings-->about phone and look for "Baseband version"
If it says "unknown" or similar you may need to reflash the modem before you flash the rom.
Or even worse you might need to do a reboot (it actually worked once).
Also do emergency calls work? If yes then it might be a problem with your sim card or you contract (or just bad luck).

The Baseband version is visible and a valid one. Also my sim works on stock rom or any other phone.
SInce I have no idea what the cause could be, here are some random things to try out, of which one might work:
-make sure you're not in airplane mode
-do a full complete wipe
-try a different sim (and see if it works)
-make sure the sim is not upside down
-fully shutdown the phone (e.g remove battery for a day [maybe not that long])
-clean contacts between sim and phone (how? no idea)
-try (even-) more roms (if there are any left)
-test a few kernels
-maybe look through the logcat (if it actaully outputs something worthwhile)
As you can see none of these "soloutions" are based on.....uhmm....anything(?). But at least....if none of them work, you know what not to do.

Perhaps you could flash back to stock rom then flash custom rom again, that way all modem files and network related files can be fixed/re-installed. By any chance have you tried changing modems? It might not help you but it's a suggestion.

Honor 5x Losing signal after reboot with custom rom

Hello all.
New poster here, been coming here for some time though for the loads of great information and generally helpful people.
I'm having an issue with my Honor 5x, and I seem to be the only one i can find on this forum having this issue.
The issue that I am having is that I lose the ability to connect to the cellular networks (I am actually running dual-sim) when I load a custom ROM after the first reboot.. The first time this happened, it even lost the IMEI numbers (WTF). I restored from the backup I made, and tried again. I got the same result, after the first reboot, it can no longer find the cellular networks, and when i try to search for network providers, it gives me an error simply saying "Error searching for networks." Restore backup again, flash resurrection rom to see if maybe CM13 is just being stupid with my phone, got no signal right off the bat, and could not find networks.
At this point, I restored the stock recovery, and let it recover my phone to stock, which is where I am at the moment, since it works. Also noteworthy, that every time I restored from backup, the phone had no problems at all connecting to the cellular networks. as well, it never had an issue through all of this with connecting to WiFi.
Relevant Information:
Phone Model: KIW-L24
Build Number: KIW-L24C567B331
Emui Version: 4.0
Android Version: 6.01
Kernel Version: 3.10.49-g472a5b3
Location: United states
Carriers: Cricket, MetroPCS
Bootloader is unlocked
I have not restored root access
I have Flashed TWRP and made a full backup (again)
I'm getting the feeling that it is due to to something that I have forgotten, but I can't seem to think of anything.
Help?
So close, but no cigar.
Still having issues, here's what Ive done so far:
Restored phone completely to stock, leaving only an unlocked bootloader.
Loaded the latest version of TWRP
Re-Rooted the phone
Made a complete backup of the phone, with no partitions left unchecked, in case of a catastrophic failure
Used TWRP to wipe Dalvik/ART, Cache, System, & Data
Loaded the latest CM13 nightly build
Loaded GApps pico version (I don't use many of the Google apps, so I prefer to download the ones that I want)
Wiped Dalvik/ART
Rebooted Phone
At this point, the phone went about its first boot business, loading stuff in the background, optimizing apps for the first use.
I skipped almost all of the first-time setup stuff, no sense in setting it all up if it didn't work this time as well, but connected to WiFi, selected the primary SIM, and activated data on that SIM. This is all normal from my other attempts as well.
Rebooted the phone, when it came back up, I had signal on my phone, and it successfully sent and received messages.
Added my Google account, rebooted again, not getting signal. checked network operator settings, and I get the message stating "Error searching for networks" for both SIM cards.
Removed Google account, changed SElinux settings to permissive, soft reboot, no change.
In the past, I did try wiping Dalvik/ART & cache once this happened, but the only thing that changed is that it caused the process com.android.phone to crash on me repeatedly.
Currently digging around on the net some more to see if maybe there's something that I missed.
Try 1 Sim? Its some bug with dual sim i guess
I will try that when I get a chance, I am currently trying to restore the phone back to stock again after another failed attempt.
Also noteworthy, I had it completely lose the sim cards on me after a restore to the working stock backup that i made earlier in the day yesterday, I had to completely revert to stock (Restore stock recovery, let it rest the phone to stock) then the SIM cards started working again.
This is starting to get rather frustrating.
I'll keep you updated, as I've kinda decided to make this a log of sorts of my experience with this.

I tried that, see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/help/network-help-t3445510
i dont really know what to do, could the problem be MODEM.img???
Im having the exact same Issue, All roms loose the SIM card so I loose all signal and basically everything... a restart sometimes helps it, tried installing different ROMS, going back to STOCk 5.0.1 or 6.0.1 nothing Helps... NO clue what to do.
Same issue here. Happens on every Rom.
EDIT: Using KIW-L21 (UK)
Unlocked, single sim.
Maybe the it has something to do with modem.img

Mobile data won't work since I've flashed and rooted my redmi note 5

Edit: solved, pay your bills in time kids !
Hi guys, I have a mobile data issue since i flashed my phone two days ago.
I cannot connect my phone to the internet unless I use wifi. Texts and calls are working.
Issue is occurring on both Lineage OS 18 (unofficial) and CrDroid 11.
I already flashed and reflashed the roms, wipe data, system, everything multiple times, flashed the original modem/NON-HLOS.bin file via fastboot with no luck. Tried on multiple recovery too just in case (twrp, pitchblackRP, OrangeFox). I mostly use sideloading but install from an sd card got me the same results.
Issue happens with rooted (magisk last version) roms and unrooted roms aswell.
I had several issues about twrp/recovery being unable to mount /data, which I tricked to do so by resizing data from ext4 to ext2 then to ext4 again. Not sure that's the good way to do it.
I tried to go back to a clean room with relocking the bootloader and flashing the official fastboot rom but I got stuck on a bootloop. I tried other methods with MiFlash and succeeded into booting the official rom but i'm stuck on the Welcome/new device screen (the little slideshow crash/won't advance to the next step when i have to choose between recover data from an old phone or start from scratch). I went back to crdroid for now.
My first thought was to tinker with the APN but it didn't worked, sometimes i get a message like "APN Settings are not available for the current user" but I usually manage to still write them, with no effect still. I'm on the a french operator called "Free"
Typing ##4636## in my phone app gets me to a debug menu where I can see that I'm not connected to the data services (but i'm connected to the vocal services). I have a way to check the IMS state in this menu, which tells me that i'm not registered, don't know what that means.
Already did the trick of cleaning sim card, going in plane mode, changing favorite network and so on. I'm a little desperate
If you cannot help me with this, can someone points me a good tutorial on how to going nuclear on a phone and delete everything to reflash an official Mi rom ? I'm quite used to flashing roms but I still get a bit lost between a factory reset, a data wipe, and what to flash/wipe/mount in order etc.

Sorry i didn't mention it. My last flash attempt was flash Xiaomi FW > flash crdroid > flash gapps >flash magisk and that's my current set up, and it still doesn't works. The issue might lie in the SIM card, i previously tried the sim card of a relative on my phone and it didn't do much but this morning the same sim worked and mine still does not. I'll report back once I have a new one.
Edit: could you explain what vendor is ? What's the difference with the fw or a rom ?

I'm going to lose it lmao, the reason why I didn't had any access to my mobile data is because... My monthly bill payment didn't went through because of a credit card renewal.... I apparently decided to flash my rom the day of the due date and didn't saw any warning hence the confusion. Probleme solved, I paid my bill and the data is back (what a surprise). i feel like an idiot but i've learnt things, thanks for the link joke19.
