EFS backup - Galaxy Ace S5830i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I am trying to backup an EFS on galaxy ace S5830i, this phone is in bootloop so I want to back up before flashing, EFS pro seems to have a message on it device not connected, another galaxy ace I have S5839i connects to the pc via windows so I presume the drivers are there unless they are different for this model.
As I cannot boot this phone I cannot use an android app, is there a way through recovery. I think TWRP has a function of backing up but I cannot get it to work, it says its installed but then goes back to the android recovery on reboot.

1. Read my [email protected] post#8; starts from the line : - "describing how to create your own flash able package,,,,," to Flash. " to get out of boot loop for either of s5830i/s5839i devices.
2. EFS Professional, only compatible with devices such as Samsung Galaxy S4 International (GT-I9500), Galaxy S4 LTE (GT-I9505), AT&T S4 (SGH-I747), Verizon Galaxy S4 (SCH-I545) and others. I have also tested it on Galaxy S3, S2, Note 2 and Note 10.1.
software requirements :
- Rooted Device
- Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer
- Install BusyBox app stable version 1.20.2 or above on your phone. Install the app on your phone open it. Tap on “BusyBox” version number and select BusyBox 1.20.2. Finally, then tap on “Install” and install it as “Smart Install”. ( this is why it says you are note connected in log area. However because of incompatibility, you can not see your device under “Device Filter” tab. Choose galaxy toolbox for EFS partition backup/restore instead and save a copy of the "EFSpart.img.SAVE" file someplace safe inside your PC.
- Charge your device to ensure 60% battery level
- Turn on USB Debugging mode on your phone or tablet from “Developer Options” on your device.
For your recovery concerns , we only use stock e3 recovery console of this device or we flash Temp-CWM ( cooperVe ) compatible .
Recommendation and summary : Use Odin 3.07 cooperVE to get to clean stock FW satte/ back up your EFS with galaxy toolbox/ flash cwm > go there for Nandroid back up of your device . ( Your /data/datas will be lost , too late for you mate. Your device is in boot loop position and you have no access to recovery mode i assume )
Download: Volume(+) + Volume(-) + Power
Recovery: Volume(+) + Home + Power

Hi
To install galaxy toolbox, or busybox, don't I need the phone to be working, I am concerned about flashing the ROM incase I loose imei, are you saying there is no option but to take the risk of flashing as you need the phone to boot to be able to backup.
I can get to recovery or download mode.

Accessing recovery stock e3 mode is a good news ,, Do you have any kind of flash able CWM ( cooperVe) compatible zip file inside your root of your SD card ? If yes flash it and restore your Nandroid back to revert back to your clean state . IF you don't have any back up inside your SD card , we might need to flash your xxx.tar.md5 stock firmware file over Odin 3.07 (CooperVe) to get it to your clean state . what was your CSC/PDA/MODEM parts of your official stock OS . your Region /Country and carrier you are using ? IMEI number could be salvage upon flashing custom kernel or using hex editor in many cases , depends on the parts I requested .

Reverting back to stock through my instruction @ post 2 would not cause any loss of IMEI as long as you do exactly as I have instructed . Grab this xxx.tar.md5 from this page <Registration is required > Make your slpitfus2 3 parts , yet again instruction was given @ post 2 . Flash as I instructed .
For your piece of my mind , there is no clear method for backing up EFS without access to Android OS as far as I know .
For ADB , read this topic , you need to know this essential stuff for your tinkering in near future .

solved
thanks
used the split files and flashed, now working fine.

[SOLVED] GT-I9300 Brick? Stuck on Samsung First logo

Hi there guys!
I was restoring my EFS folder with Ktool in Omega v48 but the phone Freeze so i had to remove battery. After that the rom is not botting up and is stuck on animation logo. So i decide to flash my GT-I9300 back to stock trough ODIN, so far no problem, i entered download mode and flash, but when the phone is rebooted i got stuck @ galaxy s3 logo (not the animation), so I manage to install CWM and try to flash a custom ROM but this time the device is stuck on animation boot. I did a full wipe several times but nothing is happening. I can enter download mode and flash with odin but the result is the same, don´t pass the samung logo on stock rom. I got Phliz TOUCH CWM v5 installed and fully working.
The stock i already try: I9300UBELL6_I9300MVLELL1_MVL / I9300UBELL6_I9300DGTEMA1_DGT
Custom ROMS: OMEGA ROM, (i tried with paranoid but is stuck in the first logo again)
The output in the download mode is:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME : GT-I9300
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (6 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
CURRENT STATUS: CUSTOM
Any idea what might be the issue?
FOUND THE SOLUTION!
I found the solution yesterday! Is neccesary to have a previous and fully working EFS backup.
Just restore the EFS folder using the Philz Touch,(if you dont have it yet go and flash Phliz Touch CWM v5!):
1. Create the folder Clockwordmod>backup/.efs_backup/ folder in external sd
2. Copy the backup of the EFS folder, can be a img or tar file
2. Reboot into Philz Touch CWM
3. Go back to Philz Setting> Custom Backup and Restore> Custom Restore Job> Select only "Restore EFS" > Start Custom Restore Job> Restore from External SD CARD> Select your backup file and restore
4. Reboot device
If you get a error about the directory: Create a backup job, delete the new files and copy the EFS Backup (The fully working) in the directory that has been created with the new custom job.
Doing this make my phone work again!

I already read the BASICS, the problem is that the device is not booting.
To be clear, your phone is booting, its the ROM that isn't
If you are getting stuck at the animation logo, that would suggest one of two things.
1) Its possible your EFS partition is corrupt. A warning message should come up as it tries to boot. Do you have a working backup?
In my experience, an uncompressed backup is the only saviour.
2) The ROM you are flashing is not compatible with your phone (MODEM FIRMWARE CHANGED??)
Have you tried installing a stock firmware, even better, an original firmware (i.e. the one it came with)?
Is there a reason you were trying to restore your EFS partition? Was it corrupt before you started flashing?
The answer to these questions is the difference between you getting a working phone and/or going to repair centre.

Yes, i have lose my IMEI a few weeks ago. Make IMEI repair with a box (very expensive by the way), when the phone arrived i have made a backup using efs pro and ktool, the installed ROM in the moment was stock I9300UBELL6_I9300DGTEMA1_DGT. Since that incident i always have to restore imei when i install a new room and always use the stock rom for restore the phone until now.
The download mode and CWM is fully working!!
Greetings.
I have the same problem. Same happened, wanted to restore EFS with Ktool and soft bricked. I found out that the only thing i can flash is the stock ics 4.0.4 XXBLFB and when i do that i still don't have mobile network. Tried flashing stock firmwares / roms but everything else than already mentioned ics gives me bootloop/ freezes on boot. I've sent it to repair today but if you find something out please update us.
Cheers mate
Sure mate, i will try a emergency rescue via KIES and will update the post soon.
Well..I made a emergency recovery trough KIES. he flash the original rom but is stuck on the Samsung boot animation, i rooted and install CWM trough ODIN make a wipe data/cache/dalvik and nothing happen is still stuck on the boot animation.
I will download the original firmware from sammobile i see if i can flash trough ODIN.
Any other recomendations?
I can only comment on my own experiences, but here goes.
I tried to flash an Omega ROM and lost my IMEI number and serial.
Fortunately I had several backups of my EFS partition.
I restored it. I found that every time I rebooted the IMEI was erased again.
I then saw a post about about setting permissions for files in EFS. I set and since no problems!
My EFS backup was made through TWRP recovery.
To set permissions I used a terminal app, but it can also be done by ADB.
Check the flashing basics post/sticky and all you need is in there.
The important thing is that you have an EFS backup.
Sent from my GT-I9300
Thank @IRPnet
But the problem i got now is the not booting ROM, i already install the original rom trough emergency recovery with KIES; download the same rom trough sammobile and flash via ODIN and the result is the same, the device is stuck on samsung boot animation it won´t start.
PLease somebody can help with this? I already have made a wipe on the device several times and nothing is happening
Ok, I found the a comment I have used previously.
So, assuming you have a backup EFS, restore it. (If you don't have backup this is not gonna work for you)

Open terminal emulator and type as ;

echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
echo -n ON >> /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode

chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/keystr
chmod 0744 /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode

You now should not see the that message anymore. Its because of an EFS corruption. ( Thanks to yesilcin*com (sawgent) ) for exact solution.

This will ensure that your EFS partition "sticks". Otherwise, when you reboot your phone you will have to restore EFS again!

Without a backup EFS you cannot do anything. It will be a shop repair.

use following method for those who do not have efs back up :
1. flash full stock rom
2. it will be stuck at samsung shining animation.
3. pull out the battery
4. put back the battery and boot into stock recovery by pressing vol up+ home key + power key
5. wipe data and cache.
6. reboot , and your s3 will be boot up sucessfully ( if you are lucky enough like me )

[Q] galaxy s 3 advice required

Dear fellow members
Device :samsung galaxy s 3 gt-i9300
android version : 4.1.2
baseband version :xxemg4
build number jzo54k.i9300xxemg4
I am a newbie to rooting and custom rom flashing.
Recently I decided to install a custom rom in my phone as i was tired of the slowness and the lag from the samsung orignal jb version 4.1.2
I started of by rooting my phone on 27/9/13 usin odin 3 v 1.85 and the file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar by selecting it in the pda options. i read the intrustions from android rooting .com .
but when i began to create a back up it gave me a warning in cwm manager v 3.60 that this version of cwm manager should be used with cf-cwm v1.1 or newer. it appears you are running a different recovery.various features have been disabled.
further when i restarted my fone in to creating back up mode it said cannot mount path.
Now i want a cool new custom rom in my phone and i dont want to screw up my phone.
I need advice on what should i do next?
is backing up my phone is really that important ?
now that my phone is rooted should i flash a custom rom?
if so which custom rom is the best in my case scenario?
i am completely new to this and i immediately stopped after doing what i just explained above.
Thankyou in advance for your suggestions and help.

never use cwm manager to flash roms/recoveries! as the phone is already rooted, flash philz recovery via odin(a newer version 3.07 might be better). then flash any custom rom(can not recommend one). check out the rom features in the respective thread and flash it on yours.

well this had happened to me too... What I did is enabled the debugging mode from settings and again followed the steps of rooting phone assuming the phone isn't rooted. make sure your sd card is inserted while rooting.. after successful rooting you can again check it works or not... hope this helps you...

S3 Does not boot after using odin + syriah. HELP!

Phone noob need help completely restoring Samsung Galaxy S3. I downloaded a custom kernal called syriah which bricked my phone and now the phone does not boot. The carrier is ATT and I live in America. I have downloaded the default firmware and followed several guides and Ive had no luck. Any would would be appreciated. The phone does not boot. When i attempt to boot it, only shows the samsung logo for a brief second and the then screen turns black.
It appears like you have downloaded a kernel compiled for the International Samsung version (i9300) while your phone is an American version.
If you have a custom recovery installed, then take out your sd-card from the phone, and copy a ROM into it via desktop/laptop. Put the sd-card back into the phone and boot into recovery mode. Install the ROM from the folder in the sd-card.

Indeed, as you been trying out, you could install it via Odin without using a sd-card. Since I always have a sd-card with me, that was the 1st approach which came to mind.
Be careful to ensure that Kies does not come up while using Odin.

Firstly, ensure that the device type for the ROM matches your actual device type. The boot screen should show your device type. My boot screen says "Samsung GT-I9300" on booting up, so I know my device type is International S3 (I9300).
Whether Odin is usable depends on the extension of the file. If it ends in ".tar" or ".md5", you should be able to install it via Odin as PDA. If it ends in ".zip", it's probably meant for installation via a custom recovery.
Do not meddle with the PIT. It's a system managed file for the partition information and you'll want to change the partition data in very rare scenarios.

[Q] PhilZ-CWM installation

Hi,
I have some questions concerning the installation of PhilZ-CWM. My phone details are at the end of the message. Thanks in advance for your help !
1) Kernel overwrite
From what I understood of traditional CWM, when installing on an i9100, it overwrites the current kernel (which would mean my actual ROM, very old one, would become unusable). Does PhilZ-CWM behave the same ?
2) What to download ?
I looked at the PhilZ-CWM thread for Galaxy S2 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development-derivatives/philz-cwm6-stock-kernel-cwm6-root-exfat-t1877270 ) but I'm not sure what to download. I saw there are 2 installation methods : via zip on external sd or via odin. It seems the first method also roots the phone and I would like to avoid that (at least on the short term, as my phone OS is out of control).
What version do I need to download on Goo.im ? The latest one (6.48.4) ? Or are there any incompatibilities with my actual phone setup (particularly the fact that it's running gingerbread) and I need to download an old one ?
3) 2.3.3 support ?
After installation, will I be able to boot into my ROM and have a fully functional phone ? Or will I have to do a full backup and install a compatible ROM ?
PS : what I can do right now with my phone (apart from recovery menu actions) is very limited because of its current state ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/help/low-memory-uninstall-app-connect-adb-t2836974 )
Phone details :
Galaxy S2 (i9100)
Android 2.3.3 / official ROM (as always, customized by the cellular company, but only on apps I suppose)
Version : Gingerbread.XWKE2
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606 [email protected] #2

Everytime you flash a Recovery, the kernel also gets overwritten. The Kernel and the Recovery are tied together.
However, the PhilZ-CWM you mentioned, is using a Stock-Kernel, which is very stable and safe.
The Kernel Version is sometimes important.
If you are planning to upgrade to ICS/JB, I would use (at least) an ICS Kernel.
If you are planning to keep Gingerbread, I would use a Gingerbread Kernel, to avoid instabilities.

Usually the method doesn't matter, but in this case the updater-script might be doing more, than the odin flash.
But as far as I know, the rooting behaviour can be changed using philz_installer.
I prefer the "zip on external sd" method, because this method is using an updater-script, which have some safety checks.
But you should also be safe, when using odin.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm afraid, that there is no gingerbread version, in this thread.
If you want a Stock Kernel and CWM you can try this thread. Don't be afraid of the rooting, you can always unroot your device at any time(*).
There is also a package which is using your Kernel (KE2). This package would therefore flash the same kernel, and you should have no problems with your ROM.
But any Gingerbread Kernel from this thread would be ok, I guess.
(*) When you root your device, a system binary called "su" is installed to /system/bin and a symbolic link at /system/xbin is created.
Nothing more, nothing less. If you remove these files, your phone is unrooted.

3) 2.3.3 support ?
After installation, will I be able to boot into my ROM and have a fully functional phone ? Or will I have to do a full backup and install a compatible ROM ?

Flashing a GB Kernel and using a GB Rom should cause you no problems.
I'm not quite sure about ICS Kernels and GB Roms.
As far as I know, ICS is using a new file system (ext4), and it's very likely that you will not be able to boot your GB Rom.
Backup is always recommended.

You can root your device using a One-Click-Root for i9100 (this app is using the Exynos Exploit), and then delete the apps yourself with Root Explorer or ES Explorer.
You can delete the "su" binaries afterwards, and you have the same system as before.
Furthermore, flashing a Custom Recovery isn't necessary at all.
You could flash a Gingerbread Custom Recovery of your choice, make the changes you want in your system.
Then unroot the device and flash your Stock Kernel again. You can extract the Stock Kernel from the Official Firmware Updates.
Sidenote:
Flashing a custom kernel, can increase your custom binary counter (visible in Download Mode).
A stock kernel, shouldn't increase that counter. If your counter gets increased you can use the TriangleAway App.
However in my experience, flashing a Custom Recovery + Stock Kernel didn't increase my counter.
Hope this helps :victory:

It's always good practise to update your phone to the latest official release first then install a custom rom. I would recommend doing this to prevent any issues along the way of flashing a new rom.

[Solved] Boot screen stuck after trying to restore EFS. (No recovery access)

Phone: [Samsung i9300 international ]
Hello XDA. I was trying to restore the EFS in this phone with the GalaxySim unlock App right after flashing the Slimkat ROM which gave me a no signal problem. The IMEI appeared as unknown and baseband too so i proceded to trying to restore the EFS backup i had in my pc.
I followed the procedure by doing tap in restore EFS in the app , chose the EFS folder option and then restarted. After that I can only see the Samsung logo and doesn't boot. Since the beginning i got this used phone I could never load the custom recovery (TWRP) from the button combo, it always went straight to Odin telling me to press vol up to go to download mode.
The only way around to get to TWRP was by using Goomanager and using the reboot to recovery mode option. That's how i managed to install the Slimkat ROM. After that I always get the red exclamation sign while booting but still everything was fine except for the phone signal not working at all.
What can i do now by using only download mode? What are my alternatives?
I hope you can help me.
Thank you.
EDIT 1:
I managed to boot to TWRP with adb shell by "adb reboot recovery"
and when i try to flash a custom ROM or the backup before the Slimkat it shows this error:
"E: failed to mount /efs ".
EDIT 2:
So now that it's a EFS failed to mount case , i'm following this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37533150&postcount=12
but i dont know what version of busybox to download. Which binary should i get?
I recommend that you stop flashing anything else on the phone until you confirm that the model # is gt-i9300 in download mode.
After confirming the model #, download the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com and flash it in Odin. Boot the stock ROM and see if the imei is properly displayed.

This is on the back under the battery:
Model: GT-I9300
FCC ID: A3LGTI9300A
SSN: I9300GSMH
Also when I try to charge the phone by the wall socket the battery animation seems to be just frozen. Which stock ROM should I download? Does it matter the country? I don't know from which country might be this phone.
Have you had the from new or did you get it used?
If you got it used, I wouldn't trust the label. You should confirm the model number in download mode.

It's correct the model, it's a used phone and:
Custom binary download: yes (11 counts)
Current binary: custom
System status: custom
Flash the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com with Odin. This will remove root and don't forget to perform a factory reset before booting the stock ROM for the first time.

From any country or at least close to where i got it from? 4.3 android i guess?
I have never found the country to make difference so pick a country closer to you with the language you need.

Thank you for your help. It worked and now its running a stock firmware but I cant get wifi working on it, it keeps saying connecting-saved-secured and reconnects. The phone signal its fine and can make calls without problem but now i flashed TWRP and It doesn't let me get into it nor with the button combo or the Goomanager. I want to backup this EFS asap and try another custom ROM.

I can at the moment, it was just USB debugging that was off. Again i used the adb command to reboot into recovery. Now , what TWRP version should i get to backup the EFS in .bin or any other format that i can flash with Odin. Can you recommend me a ROM that doesn't mess with the EFS?
I haven't had an s3 for over 2 years but I recommend flashing the latest tar version TWRP in Odin.
Alright, I did a backup of the EFS in .img and a modem backup in .bin with this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/tool-backup-restore-efs-imei-sgsiii-t1901098
then i proceeded to flash a custom ROM and wifi works but now the phone signal goes intermmitent, the icon with the bars goes full and empty constantly, it identifies my provider tho. Airplane mode triggers on/off automatically. Should I restore the EFS from stock ?
Edit: flashed the modem.bin from stock. Airplane mode still intermmitent.
Don't touch the EFS if the phone is showing the correct imei. You flashed the latest stock ROM? Does this signal problem happen on stock too?

In stock there was no problem at all with the signal. The wifi thing was my router actually, some authentication problem related with the use of the password.
Edit: flashed another modem that was tested by other user with the same ROM and phone went completely unstable and couldn't identify the network. Went back to my back up of modem, still airplane mode goes on/off.
I suggest flashing the latest stock ROM and then test. I only used stock modems and bootloaders on all of my Samsung phones.
If the phone doesn't work properly on stock, custom ROMs may exacerbate the problem.
After a long day of testing, only the latest stock ROM works properly while every other custom ROM has the same problem with the phone signal, CM11, slimkat... What's happening?
Edit: flashed CM13.. still the same.
Sounds like you are limited to stock or stock-based custom ROMs.
