Movies on curved screen? Bleh... - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are the edge screens part of the main screen? If they are, movie/youtube fullscreen watching is going to be an inferior experience on the s6 edge.

As I feared then... Tampering with the video quality in the worst possible way. There is going to be an outrage from videophiles responding to people who just find this immersive because it's a cool feature. When the coolness has settled all that is left is this inferior screen which is bent. It's even bent in the wrong direction... Youbend on Sambend... Lol

Haha, yes I can agree on that... Although I don't think you have to be a videophile to prefer a flat screen ?

The screen curves away from you, it's the opposite of immersive because you get less useful screen area and more background reflections.

I think it really give more background reflection (on the curvy parts), but for me it doesn't really matter much. The choice of curvy screen obviously have some disadvantages, but people who don't wanna deal with it can get the S6 instead.

Yeah they are work as main screen on the operations mentioned by you.

I think it's not gonna be a problem. The videophile can get S6 instead. I viewed testing video posted by youtuber Marques. I think the curved screen won't cause problem for video-watching but will cause problem for case-maker.lol

I don't care for movies that much, the edges imho are giving a nice touch to the picture.
I just wonder how good it might work with vr glasses, I hope that's no problem with the edges

It's curved like a millimeter on each side... is that 2 millimeters gonna ruin your movie experience?? If so, then buy the damn regular version. Why is this even a thread? Stop complaining people you are sickening

i agree if you don't like it don't get the edge.
however i tried it at best buy today and watched "the get hard" trailer on youtube and i felt like the screen was awesome and immersive now idk know if the edge played in this or the mere fact the quality of the screen is far more superior then my s5.
And buy the way the speakers or speaker sounded great loud and clear, 3x times better then the s5.

1 mm? Don't think so.. More like 4 mm.. I agree that the curve is pleasing when it comes to aesthetics, but the note edge Is superior since the edge isn't part of the main screen. What I would like to know is why people think it's immersive just because it's unnatural and different ?

Yep. Apparently smartphones are the go-to devices for videophiles and audiophiles now.

I was watching videos on the demo version at best buy yesterday, and thought they looked amazing! The slight curve was not a bother for one bit.

People still really watch full length movies on their phones? JK.....
From my experience, the curved screen looks amazing and I prefer it over the transitional flat screen. There's just something about it.....the best way to describe the feeling/experience is like looking at one of those edgeless swimming pools where the water just falls over the side into the bottom pool....it's just pure Class....hope that makes sense....
The edge just has that x factor to it where it actually makes the traditional flats look outdated LOL. It's like what the Samsung curved LED's did when it came out....it's a whole new experience.

Screen quality

i have the photon , but i really dont like the screen quality (sharpness and color wise)compared to my old epic. not trying to troll here, just to ask if anyone think it can be fixed with a software update or is it a hardware issue?
The general consensus is that's just how the phone is. However some lucky people don't seem to notice screens quality (or lack thereof).
Welcome to the PenTile display.
Just the way it is. For best results, try to hold the phone far away.
I think it's actually a pretty cool technology.

Coming from the Epic, who's Super AMOLED screen also uses a pentile subpixel arrangement also mind you, you shouldn't really be noticing a sharpness difference between them. But yes, any and literally all LCDs do look duller and more muted than the Super AMOLED. It's just a nature of the technology.

Well, I can say that, due to it's white subpixels, it is a brighter display that is much more viewable in sunlight. It is also much better on toast.
Wilty
I watch videos all the time on my phone and I don't like it. It is too grainy, the color is off, too much sharpness, black is too dark and any hint of light in the scene and its too bright. HD quality videos look pretty good but lower resolution videos just look bad.
I see the problem in dark scenes where there is very little light you can't differentiate any objects in the dark area. Its all a blur. In the same scene the face has little light on it but it will be over satuated. Its like someone is shining a flashlight in his face. If any of you watch Showtime's Dexter you will see what I mean as the show has a lot of scenes in dark warehouses.
Yes I think they can make it better with software. They can turn down the sharpness. They can allow a little light to be on during dark scene rather then let it be all black (total absence of light). They can try different color temperature because right now all the human skin looks too red to me. They can dial down the intensity of white on lighted scenes.
Just got home with my Photon, which I bought primarily because it's a world phone and specs looked pretty good. Gotta agree with OP, the display is piss poor. Just might return it for something else. Kinda mad I turned in my EVO. Overall I played $99. We'll see...sigh.

One thing that is kind of cool, is that the CEO actually replied to (and blogged about) an AndroidForums thread discussing the P4G screen. Spend some time reading that thread for even greater detail about the merits of the Pentile screen.
Granted, it's the CEO of Pentile, so obviously they have a bit of a bias... but she also offers fascinating technical insight behind the technology as well.
I'm very happy with the screen myself, very easy to read in sunlight especially but very bright in general (which i like). The colors were "different" compared to the evo and evo 3d I had prior but after a few hours, I started noticing more color and details in apps that I hadn't ever seen before. I feel it looks much better overall vs the evo and evo 3d. Yes, I do see the checkerboard when the display is off if I look at the right angle but I dont notice it when the screen is on.
This phone has so many pluses, and the screen is one of them to me.

You are seriously making me think that something is wrong with my phone, man. Cuz if what I'm seeing on mine is consistent throughout, there's no way a person can think it looks good. Some of the pictures look like they are in 8-bit. I'm really disappointed.

Yeah, i'd maybe compare it to the store display if possible because I think mine looks excellent, and the display in my local stores looks really good too. I usually keep my display cranked up pretty high, and it has much better blacks and white levels then i ever had on my evo or evo 3d.

I played some Netflix movies and they looked really bad to a point where I'm like Motorola couldn't have released a multi-media phone with such piss poor video and picture quality. I'm taking back the phone tomorrow to switch it out.
Here's another question. I put in my sdcard from my EVO and none of the pictures fill the screen. I noticed the same thing on the carousel view in the FB integration. The pictures don't fill the screen. Any ideas?

How does it look if you use a different Gallery app like QuickPic?
I, for one like the screen. There is no "burn in" like the galaxy s phones and the Nexus S. I can see the pixel separation, but it doesn't bother me a bit. Maybe you guys need to quit making out with your screens.
I'm not looking for fantastic. I'm coming from the EVO which, even though washed out compared to a Super Amoled, looked fine to me. The problem appears that in areas of high contrast or in shadows, the blacks are too black so picture actually looks blotchy. Believe me when I tell you I'm not the overly picky type. But image quality is definitely a step down compared to my Evo.

Nice explanation of PenTile. I also have no issues with the display and think it is quite good in comparison to my E4G. I wonder if the different perceptions are due to astigmatism. Last year I got lens implants that corrected most of my astigmatism (some remaining, but not much). Maybe people with a lot of uncorrected astigmatism are more sensitive to the display? Maybe it's the opposite and astigmatism makes the effect harder to see and I have just enough astigmatism left to make it not noticeable?
I thought the display was fine, and while I could see the screen door effect, only really noticed it while looking for it.
Then I installed a game where blue was a predominant color used in the background, Wisp Lite, currently featured on the Android Market. Anyone would immediately notice the screen door effect on the background, it was so obvious.
Mulling if this matters enough for me to consider returning it.

[Q] Screen Defect?

Since I got the phone I noticed that in certain lighting and angles, I can see what appears to be an obtuse angle shape about .75 cm long on the screen. It is definitely not a scratch but appears to be underneath the screen. In most cases you cannot see it and it does not affect the picture, but being the OCD person I am I see it frequently.
I tried to take pictures but I could not replicate the effect...
Would a sprint store replace it for free? Or should I just stop worrying...
EDIT: Managed to snap a picture.

I know right? It seems like such a minor issue but its very annoying...at least yours is only wide viewing angles...you can see my screen defect from pretty much all angles...
i have OCD as well..Only thing that will make this better is time..with in my 1st 2 days of having the phone i got dust under the screen and was very upset and wanted to return the device.Eventually i got over it and then I found more specs under the screen and was pissed.
I again, got over it in time and now it doesn't even bother me.I dont see it unless im looking for it and when I do see it i just look passed it.So if you have extreme OCD and do not think you will get over it and you are with in your 30 days then return the device.Just remember something will happen to the new device as well so learn to deal with it or look into getting a device where these things do not happen.(i dont think they exist)
good luck

[Q] Screen Blemish

Hello All,
I was just wondering how many of you have noticed some little imperfection in your screen? Not like a burned out pixel, but actually a little blemish from the manfacturing process. I have one little tiny area where it looks like maybe something is under the screen, like a spec of dust?
Has anyone else experienced this? Should I expect the screen to be perfectly flawless? I mean I know it should be, but can you pick out a little blemish?
Thanks,
Sam
It seems like 90% of the phones i've had get a speck or two of dust under the screen at some point. Sometimes phones come from the factory with a speck already under it! My personal opinion is that if you go in search of a totally flawless screen, you're really going to inconvenience yourself for little to no benefit in the end. I started liking all my gadgets a whole heck of a lot more when I learned not to scrutinize them so closely. Mass production has it's benefits and it's drawbacks.

And this looks more like a tiny dimple, or imperfection, I would say it looks like (if they had them) a mold mark of the smallest caliber.
I was just trying to get an idea as to if expecting a perfect screen with zero flaws was realistic, and I assume now that it is not. I have a very picky eye, I will find a flaw if it is there, my wife is always like "Really?, I would have never seen that.".

Have you tried the market. They got everything HaHa
I agree that it's good not to be overly preoccupied w/screen compromises and deficiencies, given that all phone displays have them (the Rez' being somewhat subdued colors, unimpressive sunlight visibility, and crappy viewing angles), but I've never noticed a bad pixel or screen blemish in my Rezound, two previous Charges, two OG Droids, or a Blackberry.

I really wouldn't call the colors "subdued" to me the colors feel more natural as opposed to washed out. But hell this is just based off of our personal opinions right here. All LCD's have issues with direct visibilty with sunlight, then again practically every phone does. As for the viewing angles, the only time that I could find that a hinderence, is when I'm showing others videos, it's a bit harder for me to view. But the other 99.99% of the time I use my phone I am viewing the at a direct angle so no issues here.

Your old inc was AMOLED correct? I believe any device using that technology has a zero tolerancy for dust under the screen. I haven't even bothered looking for dust under my screen, I was way too OCD about it in the past.
I dont know for sure about his...but some dinc had LCD screens.
Also....those who like Samsung TVs will say the resound is washed out. Just like they would say a Sony or Panasonic is washed out. They are not, they are natural but when you are used to over exaggerated fake colors they seem washed out.

Yeah I personally do not like AMOLED technology for that reason . The first batch of og incs had AMOLED displays, but when they couldn't keep up with the huge demand, they switched to LCD.
i loved the AMOLED screen of the inc, i thought the blacks were unbeatable and the colors were amazing............
that is until i got the rezound, realized how oversaturated AMOLED really is, and how much pentile displays give me a headache now because i continously focus on the pixels!!

Pentile is garbage hands down. It's funny to see all the Nexus fan boys try to defend the screen.
I do a lot if boating here in FL. The Samsung Omnia2 with it's Amoled screen was suppose to be easier to see in direct sunlight, thus perfect for me. I could not see it at all in direct sunlight. I can, however see my Droid X and Rezound screens in direct sun. Granted I can see them better in the shade, but at least they aren't useless as was my Omnia screen. I also felt the colors on the Omnia looked cartoonish.

Anyone else with very bad lens flare?

Anyone have this wonderful issue? I used my note 8 in the exact manner and no issues. No case on the s9+ or anything that could cause this besides a possible hardware issue or I received a lemon. Please check out your camera's and let me know plz. I hope it's just my phone

Thanks for the response. I went back outside to take more pics and I noticed the camera module was very reflective. It was like i was reflecting light with a little mirror. I grabbed my note 8 to see how that module's reflected light. At first i barely saw the reflection. Then i had to really put the phone at a major angle to get a brighter reflection. I think the camera module's aren't positioned correctly or designed correctly to avoid recieving the sun's rays in an improper way which then produces these crazy sun rays in the pics. My pics were taken mid day so the sun was kinda just past it's peak height. I took more pics later on with the sun lower and couldn't recreate the crazy flare. This is a deal breaker for me. Do you plan on keeping yours? I called Samsung and they weren't any help. They told me to return the phone and order another if I wanted.. this sucks
Damn. That's some crazy lens flare. I'm heading to Hawaii next week, and I'll be taking my S9+ (if it shows up on time). I hope the lens flare isn't going to ruin all my pics.
My Note 8 does it at certain angles, I just use my hand as a lens hood on the side that the sun is coming from.

Yeah, it's bad. Just communicated with Samsung Support on Twitter and they blamed the dual aperture. Suggested I try different angles and tap to focus. Smh. Guess enough people will have to complain before they realize there's an issue.

Thought it was a rainbow. How did you get it to show? As none of my pics have that but it hasn't been sunny here
Yeah the 1st photo I took outside had lens flare. I'll deal. I got the phone for the stereo speakers and speed. Not the camera.
While it may not eliminate all of it, you do have something on the outer glass covering the lens. It needs to be cleaned with a lens pen. That's what's causing those little o shaped artifacts. Because of the tiny aperture and very wide (F 1.5), these objective element must be kept optically clean as if it were a laser optic! That's exceedingly difficult since its exposed. My suggestion is to purchase a lens pen and keep it with you if the best quality pictures are important. One can really see this at night when capturing dark scenes with bright pinpoint sources such as headlamps and streetlights, etc.
My biggest issue with camera phones (they all have it!) is the internal reflections producing ghost images. It's really apparent at events (i.e. concerts) with multiple bright points of light. Bathes the image in little blue-green dots everywhere.

My biggest issue with camera phones (they all have it!) is the internal reflections producing ghost images. It's really apparent at events (i.e. concerts) with multiple bright points of light. Bathes the image in little blue-green dots everywhere.

The pic with the circled artifacts was the first pic I took. The lens was clean toothe best of my knowledge. The following pics didn't have and of those artifacts pop up. Nevertheless, I'm concerned that there is a design flaw. I've owned many phones and have never had such an issue with taking pics with the sun. I was tweeting Samsung support and said the light penetrating into the lens was the reason for the terrible pics. Idk.. the phone is very new so we'll see how many do or don't come forward with this issue. All I know is the afternoon sun was just at the right height to cause the angle that the camera didn't agree with.
It's possible as with wider apertures and very bright out of frame light sources striking the periphery of the aperture you will see this. This can't be avoided even with pro gear hence the use of bulky hoods.
The idea of a two step iris, even in its rudimentary form, is a new frontier for mobile devices and this could be a glaring limitation if not annoying. Just as when driving one uses a visor or their hand, you may have to improvise and provide some shading to limit these artifacts.
Used hand as a shield
Well, took some more pics and the results are terrible. I even had it in video. I used my hand as a shield and away went the lens flare. I even rotated the phone to were the modules were on the opposite side as I normally use the phone during picture and video taking. I think that made it worse. I'm just disgusted.
Another example of me shielding the sun.
Sorry but they were flipped during the upload process.

Thank you for sharing. The speakers and speed are great! I messed with the phone before it was released and thought the speakers were ok. When trying them when I recieved the phone i was very impressed. I take a ton of pics so I don't think I can tolerate this camera issue.

Finger print magnet?

Just purchased the S9 + and the first thing i notice is the screen is a huge finger print magnet which to some might be expected. However, Iam coming from an Iphone X (which Samsung made the screen) and its far better at hiding your finger prints!
Seems strange that Samsung have arguably made a better all around display for the opposition then they did for their own flagship!
I don't notice the S9+ screen to be particularly bad in terms of fingerprints. The back, for sure, but not the screen. No worse than any other phone I've used.

I guess its not that bad but when compared to my iphone x . The Iphone def comes out on top! Its just way superior at hiding fingerprints! I actually had no idea how good it was ay hiding them until i used the s9! I have also noticed that the Iphone display looks better under sun light / day time in general! The samsung screen is glossy and shows reflections more making the display just a tad more difficult to enjoy under sun light then the iphone!
Iam astonished that the s9 display is considered better then the iphones to be honest! Even video playback on the iphone x is better!
To each his own. I have no problem using the S9+ in bright sunlight, no issues with fingerprints and videos look great. You do know that Samsung makes the iPHone X screen, right? Same technology.

Yeah iam aware of that! Thats why iam slightly surprised! The S9 display is great! Its just that it has a more glossy finish compared to the iphone x so my own experience has been that the iphone x hides fingerprints a little better and performs a little better under sun light also!
I just looked really hard at my S9+ (which I've used all morning), and I can't see anything that looks like a fingerprint no matter what angle I look at it in the light. In fact I deliberately mashed my finger on the screen, and couldn't see a print left from that either. Maybe my fingers have dried out .

Even under light? Thats nuts! I see lots on mine! Its no worse then most devices. I just personally found the iphone x to handle things a little better which surprised me as the display is made by samsung
Some people have reported the lack of the olephic (or however its spelled) coating being not there or coming off shortly after purchasing the s9/s9+. If you take it to a Samsung store or send it in, they reportedly replace the screen and affected people aren't having problems after that.

Its not a huge issue! I dont think i would send it back and i would doubt there is anything wrong with the coating etc Its actually fine but im just pointing out that the iphone x is def better when it comes to finger prints! The s9 display is alot more glossy / shiny so it reflects everything and under light can make it a little more difficult to read text etc when compared to the iphone x but its a minor enough issue for me personally!
What a troll gtfo
