Cannot boot to bootloader, fastboot or recovery! - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have Sony Xperia Z2 with Cyanogenmod 12 20150305
I cannot boot into any recovery based applications, but the phones regular functions work fine.
I have tried with the phone off and the down and up volume buttons, I have tried with apps that reboot to recovery, I have tried with the advanced power button on CM, I have tried with adb reboot bootloader/recovery and I have tried by just trying to install an update from the CM Updater.
What do I do to get this into Recovery? Otherwise the phone is fine, but it now means I can never update the phone ever again which I am not happy about as this version of CM12 is not great.

here is your answer:

What do they mean by:
"Adb reboot recovery
Fastboot boot recovery
Camera button"
Do I press the camera button? Hold it? When? For how long?

Adb is android development bridge and it allows you to run commands from a computer. A command that may work is adb reboot recovery
Fastboot is a mode you can put your phone in to run commands from a computer. A command is fastboot boot recovery
Press camera button when led turns on when the phone boots.
All these methods assume you have working recovery. In the previously quoted thread, the last comment was a guy saying there is an issue with recovery in cm12.

Ow ok, so when you post ' what do you mean by.... ' and i posted what I meant by it you just say it won't work? I wasn't saying it would work, I was answering your question.
Sorry my mistake, I thought you wanted an answer to the question you posted that i quoted. I didn't know I was meant to read your mind.
Get recovery
Fastboot recovery

Wow rocket science. This seems like a firstly easy thing to fix, maybe you should get the basis down first before you start paying with cm.

If you can't get to fastboot your doing it wrong.
It sounds like your recovery is broken. I know how to fix your issue. It'll take 2 minutes. Here's a hint, iv already said it.

Normally I would get into fastboot by turning the phone off, turning it back on and then repeatedly pressing volume up when the purple light comes on. This does nothing and the phone just boots like normal. I have also tried holding power up, pressing it sooner, pressing it later, volume down, both, both and camera, camera... anything and everything.
Alternatively I would get to fastboot with fastboot.exe by the command fastboot reboot. All that does is turns the phone off, it never comes back on and my cmd is left saying < waiting for device > forever.
If I turn the phone back on after doing fastboot reboot, it just boots up like normal.

Ok so so all the above answers are....
... DRUM ROLL....
Wrong
You get into fastboot by turning you phone off, holding volume up(or down not sure from memory) and plugging a usb cable into your phone. The led light will stay blue and you can release the volume button. BTW the other end of the usb cable goes into a computer. Once you have successfully booted into fastboot you can run fastboot commands.
I think the only way you can recover now is restore the sony ftf, relock bootloader and unroot your device.
Sorry about the sarcasm, your just wasting everyone's time if you don't understand the basics.

I have already done that, why don't you understand. I follow all the normal processes to get fastboot or recovery or bootloader to fire up like they used to a matter of days ago, but now they don't work. I am looking for solutions outside the norm here because my phone is operating outside the norm.

fastboot reboot and reboot with volume up to get to bootloader followed by volume up and down to get to fastboot and then power button do work, or at least they did last week.

This is not how you get into Fastoot. The method you explained above is how to get to the recovery. I think you have fastboot and Recovery mixed up.

This actually the correct way to get into Fastboot.
As o0 Matt 0o sugested read this for the basics.
The kernal CM uses doesnt have a good recovery like TWRP in it. If you can boot into to your ROM (CM) install this app and use it to install the recovery then you can boot into the recovery by "Turning the phone off, turning it back on and then repeatedly pressing volume up when the purple light comes on".

Ok good to know. By the way now you know how to booting flashmode. This is the other volume key to fastboot.
I hope you understand flashmode and fastboot now and how they differ from recovery. If you listened to me with an open mind last night, you could have fixed your problem I 2 minites.
I am 100 percent positive you could have fastboot a new recovery or kernel to fix your issue. You wouldn't have lost your data or anything and you'd be up again in about 2 mins.
Help yourself by learning the basics and understanding the key terms first. I think someone else also said I was right about fastboot.

Hi all,
My Transformer Prime will not boot past the initial Asus screen. It's remains stuck on this screen but when I hold power down, the device reboots. I am not able to get into recovery using power and vol down, then vol up. I cant turn the device off, it reboots every time. When I try to hold vol down while rebooting, the normal white writing doesn't appear, it just continues in the same loop at the Asus screen. I dont even get as far as the EeePad splash screen. I'm at a loss for what to try. I can get into recovery or fastboot and it wont connet to the pc. Am I screwed? All of the advice I can find needs recovery etc. The problem started when I tried to wipe the device. Could it have deleted the recovery image, rom etc? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

First, this belongs in q&a or general. Your problems have nothing to do with development.
Secondly, I posted a link a while back in the EOS3 ROM thread in reference to recovering from the exact scenario . The post includes which tools, drivers, and the process in detail on how I recovered down to the command for fast boot flashing the recovery ( which had a specific value for the device ).
EDIT:
Here is my detailed post. Try that and see if fastboot works for you. I was literally in the exact same boat not terribly long ago.

Aso I forgot to ask.... were you already on a JB boot loader? If you were on ICS, make sure you download the ICS blob for twrp from the link and not the JB blob. That's crucial because if you flash the wrong recovery, you are screwed lol.

He likely wiped all of his partitions ( including recovery ) like I did by accident. Fast boot was a pain in the arse for me until I used the -i command along with the new drivers. Hopefully my post resolved his issue.

Thank you for your response so far and apologies for putting the thread in the wrong section. The instructions given were great, only I am unable to get into fastboot. When I try and turn on the device holding vol down, it just boots normally. It doesn't give me the white writing and options I had before. I can't seem to turn the device off either. When I hold the power button it reboots, but doesn't shut down. What can I try to get into fast boot?
Thanks

Try holding the down and power button while its on to force shut down, then keep holding volume down as it reboots?
Also, what were you in the process of doing right before the issues began? Did you install something with a different bootloader? You could have wiped bootloader which means you are hosed . . . ..

I've tried holding the buttons down while it reboots but nothing happens. If I hold the vol up and vol down while pressing power, the device turns off completely.
The problem started when I tried a factory reset in CWM. It crashed after a few seconds and the device rebooted. Not there doesnt appear to be anything on the device. I havent heard of CWM doing this before.

Without fastboot and nvflash there is no hope for recovery except for calling asus and requesting an RMA.
It sounds like your device has the boot to recovery flag, but with a broken recovery, something which the bootloader has no exit path from.

Without a bootloader you will not get any output from the device, the bootloader is what displays the asus splash screen. Without it the device would just drop into apx mode.

Do not lie but don't tell the whole truth if you know what I mean
Don't go into too much info and get straight to the point, also don't show any technical knowledge.
"It doesn't turn on any more, it just flashes on a screen showing Asus".
"It wont turn off"
If you are lucky and they just look at it and not check what has happened they might just switch motherboard rather than messing with it.
Also try to run the battery out first. Harder to check
You shouldn't be covered at all because you agreed to that when you unlocked, but you might get lucky while staying truthful

What is the repressing step? I've never heard of that. Isn't it just vol down and power, then release power while still holding vol down until recovery boots?
Also, do you have adb or fastboot installed on a pc? If so, adb reboot recovery from CMD if in android, or fastboot reboot recovery if in bootloader. Have you tried those?

You don't have to release the buttons, idk why so many people keep saying this. Should be the same as mine.. With the phone off just hold both power and volume down until you see it say Recovery Mode loading, then release. If that doesn't work then try the adb command while plugged in to your computer.

soft bricked my phone... desperate for help..

alright guys, so here's the story. just yesterday i bought a brand new lg v10, got it home and the first thing i did was root the device and used ADB to load TWRP following the instructions here on SDA to a T for the ROOT/RECOVERY setup. and it worked. all was fine and dandy, the first time i booted into TWRP via ADB after root i got in, flashed a debloated ROM + xposed and again, everything went fine.. loaded into the OS of the new ROM, went through setup, turned on USB debugging, clicked always allow this computer, installed xposed app yadayadayada. I then, using ADB again, loaded into TWRP. i created a backup there just in case something went wrong with the changes i was about to make and once the backup was complete i loaded back in to the OS. at this point i thought i had done everything right and was confident that if i made system changes that didn't work out i could just flash the phone with TWRP from the backup i made. right? WRONG! ...apparently... so anyways, i made my first change, which was to use a NONROOT app called texdroider or whatever to change my DPI (as i have done with a couple phones previously without much issue) but i didn't take into account that stupid second screen... making the DPI changes system wide, as i'm sure those of you that know this phone are aware, causes the systemUI to crash with an error.. making the OS unusable.. so i tried to load into TWRP by holding the volume down and power button.. but instead it just booted me to the factory recovery.. not TWRP... the phone is unusable within the OS, i can't get the phone to connect to adb to boot into twrp as i had previously, i can't seem to get the phone into download mode, and i can't boot to TWRP and the OS is junk at this point.. but it DOES say on the "LG" screen that the bootloader is unlocked so i'm really hoping i'm not completely out of luck.. but i am not sure what to do at this point. does anyone here know of anything i can try to get into a custom recovery at this point? if i could get into TWRP my SD card in the phone has a backup, the original image, not to mention i could pull the SD card and add anything i need via my pc and then boot back to twrp etc etc and i would have no issue fixing the phone... i really don't understand what i did wrong or why i can't boot to my custom recovery but i'm at a loss.. i'm just looking for a way to force the phone into a custom recovery... or restore the original factory image.. if you have any advice at all i would really appreciate it.
Thanks for reading
**UPDATE** this may or may not make things much easier... but I got download mode working!! so at least there's that, still no custom recovery and i'm currently looking for a KDZ or TOT file to flash via lg flash tool... hopefully that makes things easier..
When you say you got to the factory recovery, what was that, an Android on its side or something asking you to factory reset your device? If it was the factory reset screen, if you select yes and then yes, it will take you to TWRP if you have it installed. If you don't it will factory reset your device.

To boot into recovery from power off, you hold volume down & power. When you see the LG logo release and press power while continuing to hold volume down. Then as said above, it come up as a factory reset, select yes each time, and it should boot into twrp, providing you installed it correctly.

it was a screen asking me to do a factory reset, i click yes, it asks to confirm, i click yes again and then it "successfully" factory resets my phone... it shows the android factory reset symbol that its resetting, then says that its "optimizing apps" and goes through that whole process.. but when it finally loads the "welcome" screen (so i know for a fact that some sort reset has taken place) i get the same "systemui has crashed" error and the OS is unusable and won't connect to my computer.. idk why i can't access TWRP.. i booted to it 3 times before this happened, though never by the hardware buttons on the phone.. everytime i booted to TWRP i had used ADB to boot to TWRP.. what makes me the most sad is that i have a nandroid backup on my SD card... but i can't flash it without recovery.. which i can't install on the phone without getting into the OS..
is there any way to install TWRP or even boot to a temporary TWRP so that i can do so? if i can flash my nandroid i'm saved.. if i can get into a custom recovery i'm saved.. if i can find a .kdz file to flash, i'm saved... if i can get my phone to be recognized by my computer/adb i'm saved.... there simply has to be a way to unbrick this phone...

well i seem to have somehow NOT installed TWRP correctly because it just proceeds to factory reset my phone.. which for some odd reason doesn't reset the DPI... leaving me stranded... is there any way to get ADB to see my device in its present state? my computer makes the device recognition noise when i enter download mode and i can see it in device manager but not my computer or ADB
I've had this phone just over 2 months but I'm not positive, is download mode the same as the bootloader on this device? If so, fastboot commands should work, and you can flash TWRP again, or do 'fastboot boot TWRP_filename' and it will boot TWRP temporarily.
Oh, and the factory reset just wipes your data, but otherwise doesn't restore your system to factory state. That's why your dpi change remained.

i think somewhere in there i must have missed something and ended up only booting into twrp temporarily.. which is certainly possible since i never boot to twrp during that initial process from the hardware keys or soft keys.. always through adb.. the phone was already plugged in.. typing the command was a couple keys away..
is there anyway to get TWRP on to the phone now? or am i screwed :'(
Well, it is a factory restore for the average user, because the average person isn't modifying their system. But no, I'm sure you're not screwed. If you're in the bootloader you can't use adb, you're already past that step, so you can skip to the fastboot part. What happens when you type fastboot devices? If the phone shows up then you can either fastboot flash or boot TWRP..

from what screen should i be attempting this? hold volume up with phone off and plug in to computer to enter download mode? should i try it at the factory reset screen (volume down plus power)? those are the only two screens i seem to have access to.. in download mode my pc/adb just doesn't recognize the phone.. it doesn't show up as a proper device like it did before this whole thing and in that factory reset mode i get nothing.. the download mode seems like its built for LG and runs from different drivers because in device manager it shows up with an error code that it couldn't start the device (this was not the case when i was using adb to unlock the bootloader and then using the bootloader to boot to TWRP..) what am i missing?
and hey, thank you so very much for taking time out of your day to help me. I really do appreciate it.

No problem buddy, and sorry for the confusion. You want to be on the bootloader screen, so here is what you can do: turn the phone off(or remove the battery if you have to, and put it back in), plug the usb cable into the computer only(not phone), hold volume down on phone, plug the usb cable into the phone. That should get you into the bootloader, and then you should be able to fastboot flash or fastboot boot TWRP.
Waiting for a resolution to this thread!
I'm pulling for you from the cheering section. (otherwise known as afraid to do it myself section!)
I'm pretty sure others have come through this exact situation unharmed (I've pretty much read every thread here.) so it's only a matter of time before you get this figured out.
Here's hoping it's sooner than later.
Sorry I can't offer more besides encouragement!

@ngoblirsch Along with the information provided in these suggestions and what you have said, you need to reinstall your LG/fastboot drivers on your PC while in fastboot mode

Well I appreciate the encouragement, it sure seems to have helped! Issue has been resolved. ended up that i just didn't know the hardware key combination to get to the bootloader/fastboot mode without being already connected to adb. nothing that i could find online said to hold volume down while plugging it in to a computer. as soon as i was able to do so i connected to adb and it was a breeze from there; I am now back with an OS AND a customer recovery properly installed on the device!! I will be hanging around these forums for as long as i have this phone so i'm sure i'll bump into you guys! absolutely love the community here on XDA, you guys are freaking awesome!!

Hard Brick ?

Ok, I just want to know if my phone is hard bricked, or if I still have a chance...
I tried to install an update (121 to 170 for plk-l01) on my rooted phone, with local update. It didn't worked, twrp show errors everywhere, and after turning off know i can't access the recovery. when I press on vol+/- and power for 10-15 second, it vibrate but nothing else.
Is there anything I can do ? my phone isn't recognized by my computer, by the way...
Why you did that? You can't update rooted phone

Try to boot into fastboot (phone turned off - connect with data usb to the computer - vol down + power on). Extract rom which is currently installed or higher (for your respective model) and flash from it:
fastboot.exe flash boot BOOT.img
fastboot.exe flash recovery RECOVERY.img
fastboot.exe flash cust CUST.img
fastboot.exe flash system SYSTEM.img
Reboot.

Thanks, but unfortunately, it just 'boot' as others reboots. it vibrates, doesn't get recognize and doesn't turn on...
If anyone have any clue on how to force recognizing the phone storage, it might really help ^^
That is what my phone is doing, I tried to upgrade to marshmallow though with no root!! I put the zip in the dload folder and went through the upgrade process everything went through the phone rebooted and now its dead. Blank screen and if you hold power after a few seconds it will vibrate but that is it. I presume its hard bricked? no matter what combo of buttons I press I cannot get it in to fastboot.

ok I'm looking for a solution for hours now... so I just lokked how works our phone and I think the trouble must be in the preloader, because I can't even make my phone being recognized by any computer and I can't access to recovery.
I found this :
http://www.droidgyan.com/soft-brick-vs-hard-bricked-vs-broken/
Which could help. I'll leave that topic on for some days (if it could help someone) and I'll open a new one to know if there is any easier solution ! thanks and good luck.
I sorted mine, it was only 2 days old so I got it replaced by the shop I bought it on. I would say it was something like a pre loader from what I saw. I have never bricked an Android phone and I must have had 15-20 of them since my first HTC Magic and before that Windows Mobile which again I messed with tons reloading with all sorts of ROM's!! These phones are wayyyy too sensitive to being messed with, I always remember though that you never mess with the boot loaders, but it looks like these updates do to get it bricked to that point.

Do you have adb debugging activated on the phone? Did you try to hold phone buttons long enough?

Euuum..... maybe yes ? I used fastboot but I don't think it really matters now, there's nothing working on it. And I've sometimes hold the buttons for 30-40 second while praying lol

I just hard bricked my Honor 7 the same way. Is there really no solution? Other China-Phones are pretty much unbrickable, since you can always fix it via the preloader. No such luck here? Back to the shop and hope they actually replace it? While I admit it was stupid to just hastily start the OTA while having twrp and not stock recovery (no root, though), this is a terrible design flaw on Huaweis side.
Anyway... any hope or no chance?
i just hard bricked my honor 7 PLK-L01
it the same thing it is doing . not recognized by the computer
tried all the combination of buttons. but no hope
and it only vibrates when tried to turn on
Need urgent help please
@Idiocrate try to boot into bootloader mode just by pressing Vol DOWN button and simultaneously connecting it to a PC, don't press Power button, if it boots into it, then follow the method given by @piskr in third post.

my mobile not working

I m able to got call but I can't see anything on screen it is just 1 month old....what to do now?? I see some scratch...
You rooted? Or like DarkAlpha.Sete asks:

If there's something that you are modifying, this could introduce bugs.. if you are stock unrooted, and if you can get download mode booted, just plug it into your pc and flash stock again.. moto I'm not as familiar with versus samsung, but I'm sure you can flash stock

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean by "it comes out from my pocket". Could you please explain in another way?
Also can you enter download/fastboot mode? Press and hold the power button and volume up(or down, I don't know what is your device) to enter it.
I see clear crack on LCD...i feel vibrate but I can't see anything

Well, sorry if I am wrong, but if you have a clear crack, and you don't see anything when you turn it on(but it vibrates), probably the problem is the LCD.
You can try following the steps that I wrote to enter fastboot. If you can enter it and make the last step show the serial number, but still don't see anything on the screen, then there is a high chance that the problem is the LCD.
Firstly, install the ADB and Fastboot drivers (if you already have them, skip this). The easiest method I know to install them is by using this installer
Make sure the device is powered off(holding power button by around 15 seconds should force a shut down if it is on)
Hold power button and volume down key to enter fastboot (or try?) until it vibrates
Now, connect the device to your PC with an USB cable
On the folder where you have the drivers, open a command window. (Shift + Right Click, then "Open command window here")
Type
Code:
fastboot devices
If a serial number is printed, then, the problem is the screen and not the device itself
I have attached a screenshot with an example(my device output).
If this doesn't work, then I'm sorry but I don't know much more to do.
I say again: I'm not any professional, all of this is my knowledge... I can be wrong
