[Q] is it possible to recover file after a Factory reset? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello dear friends, i had to do a factory reset to my samsung galaxy S4 and wasnt able to backup any data before that.
im pretty unexpirienced when it comes to this whole smartphone thing , and my only question is, if there is any way to recover some of the lost data?!
i have tried running programms like Dr fone and others i could google for, sadly without a single recovered file.
i have also contacted the samsung and dr fone support and multiple other websites who offer the same service, they gave me kinda mixed answeres , some said "our software cannot recover any data from the internal memory after a factory reset" (the dr fone support said, their old tool could , but their new one cannot, which confused me abit to be honest cause they advertise on their site with being able to do so)
other supports from other websites with similar tools (yodot or jihi software i think it was, also contacted easeUS cannot recall what they said tho) said "you have to root your phone before trying to run our software"
my first question would be, arent those tools working after a factory reset to the internal memory (not just a SD card) at all, or would i have to root my phone so that those Data Recovery Programms to work properly?!
if those programms arent able recover any data after a Factory reset, can anyone here maybe think of another way on how to do it ????
there are Data Recovery Companies i have called, which said they had a pretty good success rate on lost files after factory resets aswell, but they were very expensive and i would love to know how they are going about recovering the data? and if couldnt do what they do maybe myself?!
i have no problem with learning abit new stuff, and have it even be a pain in my ass to get it done, im just very curious how to do it? (im pretty sure there has to be multiple ways, i just only spoken to very uninformed people at this point)
i really hope someone here can give me some advice on what to do or just point me into the direction of a method which could work for my issue

JTAG?

There's a guy over at the official Motorola support forum with a sad problem that really could have bitten any of us at some point... he naively saved everything to the internal flash, then his phone got messed up and can no longer boot into Android. Motorola told him he has to do a factory reset, which will reformat everything, including /sdcard and the data in it (hmmm. Will it really? That does seem kind of harsh & extreme, but I can see them doing it.)
I *know* he could almost certainly pull the data off with a little help from a JTAG programmer (if only because he could probably use it to write something like Clockworkmod onto the phone, then boot into it and use THAT to copy /sdcard to an external card's /sdcard-ext), but the Photon seems to be hardcore virgin JTAG territory. I haven't even been able to find so much as a commented teardown pic with an arrow saying, "These are the JTAG testpoints", let alone something like a RIFF box with official support for the Photon. Does anybody have any ideas?
Is this the english language? I don't understand any of that lol. I have a buddy who jtags xbox's but thats it lol. Im limited to cooking roms and compiling from source. No experience to help you but ill be following this thread to learn a thing or 2.
Can you link us to the thread on the official forums?
From what you have told us, I can't figure out much. Is the phone not booting? Or is it hanging at the bootloader? Or is it stuck a the boot animation? Or is it crashing after loading the homescreen?
Basically, how much of the phone is still functional?
If the phone can still get to bootloader, put it in RSD mode. Then run RSD Lite with the same SBF version as the one thats on his phone. This will reflash the system.img, recovery, bootloader, etc, but should allow him to keep his apps and settings.
Oh, and the I believe the lesson learned here is to use Titanium Backup to backup everything on the SD card (the real sd card, not the fake internal one). TB backups everything short of the ROM and recovery/bootloader (you need a NANDroid for that). It will get his contacts, apps, data, wifi points etc.
I have flashed sbf and reset through the privacy menu. It will not clear the internal storage. There is a separate option to clear it. Not sure if they want him to clear it a different way.

Here's the relevant thread, in case anybody can put him in touch with somebody who has the equipment and expertise to do the job: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/59942
According to my research, the Photon 4G uses a MDM6600 (according to posts in various forums). You can find the data sheet for that chip by Googling "80-Vr001-1" (I can't post links yet). It has some JTAG info in it.
If I'm not mistaken, I think the early iPhone unlocks were found by locating the JTAG pins on the radio chip, then following the circuit on the phone's PCB to find where to solder in to.
Wow
I have JTAG routers and those are easy, but a phone is much smaller in size.
All I can say is good luck -
did anyone find the correct jtag points for the board?

not restore Galaxy S2

Hi all, I think that none of you have ever had a problem like this.
Then I point out that fortunately this is not my phone but a friend ...
let's go S2 firmware 2.3.3 Tim
BASEBAND VER I9100XXKDJ
VER KERNEL-2.6.35.7-CL186662 dpi @ I9100AIKE1 ANDROIDBUILDERDELL # 2
NUM BUILD GINGERBREAD.AIKE1
In short, the problem is this impossible to do a factory reset, do not wipe data factory reset, can not change firmware via Odin I tried various versions of both Tim that no brand, nothing to do.
regarding the various attempts to make the root nothing to do does not see the sd card and then can not upload files to sd and perform root through recovery.
The strangest thing, and that if something in the internal memory gate manually after rebooting everything back then all this me angry.
I gave up so I hope your a real help ...
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me ..
Marcello
also
Meanwhile, many thanks to the one person who gave me help, but I must say that I could not solve my problem.
We try to do a bit of clarity on the issue, I have basically a Galaxy S2 in the hands of a friend, the problem is as absurd and that if I try in any way to format the internal memory, the one that you do not format usb to speak ....
Tried all the various methods found on the net that is factory wipe data then format memory by connecting PC, reset to factory settings, I even tried to install a rom updated Brand Tim is that no brand via odin, tried updating via Kyes ...
Nothing I even tried to delete pictures and various files installed one by one, each time you restart back to business as usual.
The thing that impresses me and that if I try to format the memory cell via the usb on the internal management of the settings from just after the formatting immediately returns to the space that was occupied before formatting ...
I do not know what to do, ask for a help from those who know best the language of Android, so you know if there is a possibility that you have created an auxiliary memory in the form of protection to prevent the loss of important data.
Of course, since fortunately the cell is not my friend but as I said before I riportaglielo at least in the same situation that it took, so I can operate, but with a certain amount of risk because the cell is no longer covered by warranty .
To aid you in advance thank you very much to all of you ...

Guys nothing to do, I can not in any way to fix this damn s2 I tried to install more rom via Odin I also tried installing pit csc pda. With. Flag of re-partition.
All times Odin has regularly completed all ok but when you restart the cell and as usual, the usual photo usual programs etc etc..
I think this is really a mystery, as if there is a program that can create an image file of the operating system and every time you start the restore.
I forgot one important thing if you go into recovery, I do not compare external memory or external storage true.
Especially because of this I can not do the fundamental root to try a cooked rom ...
I hope in a help of a wizard once and for all to solve this puzzle.
Thank you all.

[Q] [Help] it is really weirdly weird!

I'm currently using sgs2 with stock gingerbread.
My problem is, my phone seems to be locked on a specific state dated march 3rd 2013.
whenever i format usb storage or reboot my phone, it always back the way it was
e.g. when i tried to un/install apps or deleting files (succesfully), and then i rebooted it, the apps or files are still there such way unharmed.
i remember its somewhat like deep frezee. but usually, something like this only works on settings right?
its really nonsense when i deleted 8 gigs of file then i do a format/reboot, the 8 gigs files came up again like nothing has happened.
Already tried factory reset and unchecked restore backup settings.
Never faced something like this before, help is much appreciated
Sound like a problem with the rom, best thing you can do is backup everything (data) and do a complete wipe through recovery and flash a clean rom again. Very strange but have never (in all my experiece of IT etc) come across stuck dates and data that wont dissapear.
Edit: maybe this is a damaged or corrupt filing system? Still, the fix for tha would to be a complete format.

before this, a had an issue with the sd card, it suddenly went corrupt and cant be read anywhere. maybe this is one of the factors too?
i do planned reflashing it with jelly bean, but i'm still curios what has caused this so i can prevent and understand the problem..
my phone cant make new memories as well, new files are nowhere to be found after reboot.
thanks for the reply jl10101

[Q] forgot pin - can I avoid hard reset? SOLVED

Hi,
I put a pin on my galaxy s2 lockscreen when I was drunk and couldn't remember it in the morning - oops! I really do not want to hard reset. I'd be happy to hard reset if I could backup all of my data, however I can't connect via kies (is this because it's locked?). Windows recognises the device and it pops up in windows explorer but I can't access any of the files (I assume this is due to the phone being locked?).
Is it possible to backup all of my data when the phone is locked?
I believe I'm using ICS, I haven't applied the latest OS update.
I have rooted my phone, not sure if usb debugging is on or off because it seemed to turn itself off randomly. Is there a way to tell remotely?
I found various supposed fixes around the net but none seemed to work:
1. I found some adb trick that you can supposedly use to wipe the pin but I can't seem to connect via adb shell.
2. I tried logging into my gmail and pushing various no lock aps to the phone but they didnt seem to have any impact.
3. Androidlost wouldn't register.
4. I can't click the emergency call button, nothing happens - maybe a bug with the root process I used?
Can anyone suggest anything else?
So frustrating!
Cheers.
In one word, no. Time to bite the bullet (and contemplate how you should have backed stuff up regularly because it takes 5 minutes to avoid this situation in the first place).
Do you have ICS 4.0.4? If so,then don't even think about doing a factory reset(see eMMC bug).Flash 4.1.2 via odin, then do a factory reset in recovery.
A cousin of mine came with a similar issue. But he had an unrooted S2 running stock GB. He simply wanted his contacts back.
So what I did was root it using siyah kernel, reboot to cwm recovery, created a nandroid backup and then did a full wipe to remove the PIN. Then, after extracting contacts data from the nandroid, I restored them by rooting his phone again. Then, made a backup of contacts to SD card. Next, I flashed GB via odin, did a full wipe and then restored the contacts! Phew..

I find it interesting that you have done what you say to your phone, yet you just created an account here and this is your only post. Obviously just to ask this question. Not judging or anything, but usually when people ask something like this, it means the phone is stolen. Just odd in my opinion. Best thing I can tell you is to carry your phone to your service provider, they can fix that problem very easy.

I'm not sure what version I'm running, can I tell from CWM? I know that it's not the latest version as it tried to automatically update itself and it failed as it is rooted. What would be the problem doing a factory reset if it's running 4.0.4? Wouldn't a factory reset just restore it to the original firmware version?
I've extracted a backup of the files via CWM, all I'm really after is my photos (hopefully they are on the SD card), my contacts and my message and call logs. Is it an easy thing to extract my message and call logs from the backups?
I've called my service provider and they can't do anything, they told me to speak to samsung who in turn told me I need to send it to a repair centre.
As for it being 'interesting' that this is my only post here, I've never had cause to post here, I'm not interested in development and I know very little about it, hence I need assistance. If I stole the phone why would I care if I had to factory reset?
If you have 4.0.4,then don't do a Factory reset.eMMC bug=your phone will never power on again, and you can buy a RIFF box or a new mobo.
Ok , here's why what you are asking is questionable to me: you put a lockscreen PW on your phone, you can carry it to whatever carrier you have's store, and they can unlock it for you so you can get your data back. Don't call them, of course they're going to blow you off. Plus, where are your pictures? Every phone I've had has saved them, by defaukt , to the ext-sd card. That will not be affected by a factory reset, even if it saved to internal, as I have done so myself countless times. Also, its kind of strange that you came to xda to ask this, since you say your phone is rooted. Due to the fact that pretty much everyone who has rooted/customized their phone, has had to do so by receiving some kind of help from a site/forum. So, why did you come here? Why didn't you go to where you learned what you know about android/your phone to ask this? Why not just go to your local store? Also, you sat you don't know what version you have. You said you rooted your phone, and know about adb, quite a lot to know for some one who doesn't even know what android version they have. Anyway, I think I made my point. I'm done, I dont think I need to go on anymore. I'm not the only one who has noticed how fishy your story sounds, and I am quite noobish, compared to the majority of this site. If it wasn't so obvious, I would help you.

KThomson205 - must admit, when I read this thread the other night & your first post in particular, I agreed. And I still agree with you. We've seen situations like this every now & again on here over the past ~2 yrs and just about every one has 'smelt funny'. This one is no different.
Yea, Im done, not worth it.

How I rooted
I rooted my phone via youtube, it's pretty easy to do, you don't need developer help. I previously had a jailbroken iphone and I've done basic software design.
Data I want
My photos are probably on the sdcard - I haven't checked yet but that doesn't help my contacts and sms.
Why would I want this data if it was stolen?
If I stole the phone I would just do a factory reset wouldn't I? Why would I care about my contacts, photos and sms?
Android version
I don't know what version of android I'm on because I rooted it about 6 months ago and I'm not really into phones or apps. I rooted it because the last time I updated the OS it wiped my mini notes information where I took down a whole bunch of information - I was told rooting would allow me to retrieve the information. It didn't.
Provider and samsung no help
I have called my provider and they gave me the puck code because they misinterpreted my question, when I clarified that it was the lockscreen they said I need to call samsung. Samsung said I need to send it away for 'repair'.
At the moment I'm trying two avenues
1. androidlost
I pushed androidlost to my phone via google play but it requires 'registration'. Obviously I can't register it via the app in the phone, you can apparently do it remotely by sending an sms to the phone - I have failed to get this working for some reason.
2. sqlite3 modification
Apparently you can modify the lockscreen file and disable it via adb and sqlite3.
I've pushed sqlite to my phone but when I try the commands in adb it says file not found.
Any ideas?
How would I be able to push apps to my phone via google play if I had stolen the phone? You guys are just being paranoid.
I have now been without the use of my phone since sunday morning and am getting really desperate. I would really appreciate some assistance.
SOLVED
For anyone else in the same boat as me, please see this post for a possible solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244741
I tried method one via CMW in recovery mode but it did not work for me.
Method 2 worked for me. I loaded recovery mode, loaded CWM and through that loaded aroma file manager and used the console within AROMA then typed in the commands:
cd data/system
rm *.key
*I had to MOUNT data in CWM in order to access anything in the data folder.
Using normal adb shell through your computer etc you might have to do the full thing as detailed in the post
adb devices
adb shell
cd data/system
su
rm *.key
Thanks for sharing the solution that worked for you! Please add [SOLVED] to the title of your post.

Can we restore/extract Photos/Datas from Fully Formatted OP3T Unrooted Phone ?

Hello there,
I recently lost my mobile and when i found the phone the next day , the person who took it had already fully formatted it.My phone is One Plus 3T and it was unrooted before.I tried many ways and apps but all says I need to root my phone now to get the photos n datas back.Could you please suggest me any ways to get my datas without rooting. And shall i get all my datas 100% back if i root it now though?Since i have found my mobile ,i haven't use its storage so that its previous data print don't get overlap. Please suggest me effective way to get my photos n datas back without rooting if possible or if not than by rooting process. And if rooting is a must than suggest me a link of rooting OP3T,i am new to it.
Thanks.
You can try different software but you will not be able to get everything back. The best you will be able to hope for is maybe 25% of the photos but that is all you will get back.
could you please suggest me different softwares for recovery of photos without rooting?..
Without knowing the pocess used to format the device, and any subsequent use, it would be impossible to tell how much of your data still resides on your device. Any guess made on this would be frivolous. If the data is extremly important, forensic techniques could be applied to retrieve the data. This would require proffesional forensic software such as XRY to aquire an image, and analyse it. This software is extremly expensive, and not designed for end users, but is deployed by some data recovery firms.
It boils down to the depths of your pockets, and the importance of the data lost.
