[Q] White screen - Odin: There is no PIT partition - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
my friend's GT-I9300 was running stock rom. It has never been touched with root/custom roms.
One day he started his phone but it didn't and doesn't boot. After pressing the power button, it only shows a complete white screen. It shows not even the Samsung boot logo.
I can't access the stock recovery, but I can access the downloade mode. So I tried to flash the newest original firmware, but it failed. Odin shows the following error:
"There is no PIT partition".
I tried flashing with an one-parted firmware and with an three/four-parted one, but the result is the same. I tried different USB ports, different computers, older versions of odin...
So, is there any hope Maybe flashing a pit-file somehow?
Does it sound like a sudden death? There is unfortunately no warranty anymore
Thank you very, very much in advance! :good:

Looks like complete emmc failure does the screen look like this >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/problem-white-screen-black-lines-rain-t2467459 << if so I have seen many posts like this and not seen any resolved with a software solution.:crying: I suggest taking it to service for repair.

Try the dead boot recovery thread, search general forum, that will tell you if the motherboard is toast.

Thank you for helping! No, the screen is completely white. There are no stripes. See attachment.

It's broken hasn't it...

What a start to the day....
Sg2 would not turn on. Tried loads and then left it. Suddenly a few mins later
it came on but was hung on the boot screen. Now its turning on but just hangs
a frozen boot screen.
So thought I would use ODIN to wipe it and start a fresh. Odin also just hangs
at the start at NAND WRITE START cache.img and goes no futher ever.
I tried to do a restore in CWM but again hung and eventually failed with cant find file error messages.
Seems like internal memory is screwed or something any ideas?
Can you get into download mode (power/home/volume down) ?

Have you tried booting into download mode (as stated above), or using a jig? They cost a few dollars from Ebay, but they're a life saver in these such situations.
Have you tried to flash a different ROM? Maybe the cache.img is a dud or possibly corrupted?
can get into download mode but because a flash failed CWM is gone and just get "firmware update encountered an error".....just tried a different firmware download in odin..again hangs on NAND WRITE START....
read other threads with same error , not looking good
I think a JTAG repair will probably be cheaper for you than paying Samsung to fix it. Do a search on here/Google to find a JTAG repairer close to you. If you can't find one near you, there's at least one that I know of you can post your phone to, have them repair it & they'll post it back.

Since the phone already is in "has to be sent in anyways" state, I think this quallifies for the "last resort", only do this as last step before packing it in for sending to service.
Try an Odin flash with a .PIT file and "[X] Repartition" checked.
But be very carefull with that, double check and tripplecheck everything is perfectly set up (correct stock ROM for your model, USB connection could sustain an earthquake, PC will not crash or loose power.... all that stuff) because this could totally kill it when something goes wrong.
Well, once the preflight is done, hit the mighty "Start" button and start to pray.
Well tried ext option and hangs on setting partition. I'm worried the phone is actually proper broken since its not flashing or rom issues that was the original problem. Just went off, wouldnt turn on, left it a while...suddenly on but hanging on boot everytime..then the flashing attempts to realise more broken than ever! Will service fix that?, im with vodafone UK and they will be arsy if they find custom rom flashes etc? Can I send direct to samsung...? thanks for ur help peeps!

Are you using a single file when your trying to flash? I had an issue where it was stuck on the nand part, then I flashed using three files, PDA, Modem, Csc, and it was successful.
But seeing that you've tried repartition and that didn't work, you may be screwed.
Well, if it's that broken that nothing boots, nothing shows, nothing even flashes, I doubt they can see you got a custom ROM on it (Samsung could, but would very likely not bother checking).
So just tell them it failed during updating with KIES.
Since KIES is "teh craps" and everybody know that, they will likely go "oh yah, another one"
Are you using the original Samsung data/USB cable when you are trying to flash with Odin ? If not, do it.

Yeah, I tried to use a data cable that came with an HTC once. For some odd reason, it didn't work.
I've had Odin flashes go.wrong before and almost always fixed it by rebooting or restarting Odin. Maybe even try on a different PC. For me a 3 part file with pit + repartition has always done the trick.
However it does seem like your problem may be hardware related.

If they check that you might be in a bit of trouble warranty-wise. Or you might be lucky. If you can wait a few days or however long it takes to get a jig, might be worth getting one.

Regardless, please try the original cable, you have nothing to lose.
For the first few months, I was flashing ROM's fine with an el cheapo usb cable from ebay then suddenly, Odin would always hang. Reverted to original cable and everything has been fine ever since. I have also noticed that the file transfers and Kies Backups are noticeably quicker on the original cable.
Given you can access download mode, I'm crossing my fingers for you that its only a soft brick. Also, try plugging in the usb cable to a port directly on the motherboard (ie not one of those front panel extensions), also try different computers.
I thought jigs didnt work after a certain firmware or are they're new jigs available?
thanks
Depends on what version firmware you have on your phone/what you tried to flash. Do you remember either/both of those ?

They don't work the new bootloader, but if you got your ROMs from Intratech's thread, most of them have the bootloaders replaced with the old one.
You could also try to flash the old-bootloader-only .tar that is also in Intratech's thread if the jig doesn't work, maybe it at least manages to flash that one so you can reset the counter.
well it's officially knackered
tried original samsung cable - same problem
different computer - pit and 3 files plus single files , same problem
cant even flash any old bootloaders to reset the jig!
so gutted it ran my life for me schedules, to do, all sorts, oh well
goosed - thanks anyway

Bricked phone! Please help!

Hi.
Please read all of what I tried before suggesting something.
I have a S3 GT-I9300 international version. It's from Orange Israel and its warranty recently ended.
All of what I tried below has been done with the phone in the Download mode by turning it while holding the power, volume down and the home key, there is absolutely nothing else this phone can do, if I just normally power it on it'll get stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S3 screen, I can't even get to the animated Samsung logo. Kies is uninstalled completely and I have no AV.
Now here is what I tried so far:
1. Most forums said that I could try a regular flash via Odin by inserting the firmware.md5 file into the PDA section and flashing it, but that just makes Odin get stuck on the process (Setup Connection...) or give me this error [1st screenshot from the left]
2. I also tried attaching the .pit file for my 16GB S3 named (GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit) alone but that makes Odin get stuck on this process as well [2nd screenshot from the left]
3. I tried attaching both .md5 and .pit files at the same time but it just also gets stuck on the (Setup Connection...) forever. And when I say stuck I don't mean Odin stops responding, I mean it just hangs on that process.
4. I looked in forums even more and they suggested I try different USB ports or cables and I did, still nothing.
5. I tried different Odin versions for all of the things I already tried.
6. I tried flashing different firmware versions for all of the things I already tried.
7.1. I downloaded Heimdall Suite and I tried to use it since a guy mentioned it helped him immensely by him just installing the drivers using the "zadig.exe" file and choosing his S3 from the All Devices list and installing the driver, however I encounter something different because the program has Replace Driver option that gives me this error [3rd screenshot from the left]
7.2. I later discovered that I can install the driver anyway by clicking the arrow next to the button and choosing Install WCID driver, that worked successfully, however it hasn't solved my problem like the guy on the forum, for him, the S3 started to get recognized by Odin and it flashed his device successfully, for me, it still gave me that error.
8. After I installed the driver from Zadig I launched Heimdall Suite in hopes of finally flashing my device but it gave me this error when trying to load up the .md5.gz [4th screenshot from the left]
9. I then proceeded to add the .pit file I downloaded earlier into the Flash tab in Heimdall tool and adding the boot.img because I think that should be enough to get it going, plus I don't know what else to put. It gave me this error [5th screenshot from the left]
I'll keep updating this post when I try new stuff, however I would like you guys to suggest things I haven't tried before or supply me with files I haven't found already (.pit files, firmwares I'm not aware of, etc.). Would appreciate any little help of sorting this problem out, the warranty ended so I don't know what am I gonna do if I don't get it fixed :/
Thanks.

Yep sounds bricked. If that's the case, send for repair. Your NAND is probably borked.
Out of interest, what does all the info on the screen say in download mode?

I really want to put repairing the phone to the absolute last option.
Remove Kies = remove USB drivers Odin may not work .
PIT can kill your phone .
I don't think its SDS more like your flashing PIT has bricked the phone .

The problem with the S3 is that there really aren't many options before the last option. From what I can see, you have already tried them all.
It tells me you haven't got SDS, but we already knew you had a NAND issue, regardless of that. It was just a matter of interest.

I didn't mention that I also tried all of what I tried with Kies installed.
And it is SDS, I was just browsing through photos and the phone just locked up and restarted and couldn't get passed the GALAXY S3 flash screen, which is why I started trying all this crap, including flashing PIT. And the symptoms and behavior of the phone hasn't changed since the first time it restarted on me. So I definitely didn't change ANYTHING to the phone whatsoever.

It could be SDS. We've seen a few failures like this where download mode doesn't show SDS symptoms. It doesn't mean the result is not SDS. Its uncomfirmable.
SDS possible , Nand damaged itself possible but 90% of problems are user error .
That error is often in trying to smash their way out of trouble avoiding the simple correct method and throwing everything at the phone .Following stuff from multiple forums then asking help on XDA at the end when it is to late .
Whatever you have done in the past right or wrong does not matter it is now a service centre job .
Samsung generally offer 24 months limited warranty but would be likely to reject due to custom rom count .

[Q] Help fix soft brick

My GT-I9300 international galaxy S3 decided yesterday to brick itself, all of a sudden its stuck at the boot screen (white samsung ... text).
Tried to reboot into recovery but no go, when i hold the buttons it just continues to reboot and reboot, only showing the white text.
Tried to reboot into download and that worked, i though fhew, i got a berak and not all is lost.
In download mode it says current binary Samsung official even though i rooted and changed rom...
Product name is blank, Custom bin download is no, status is custom.
Tried to recover with kies but it complains that it cannot install new firmware (after it downloads the firmware, extracts, and all instruction followed).
Tried with odin (several original roms with my region and the one from kies) but with no luck, odin complains "There is no PIT partition.".
Tried to repartition with GT-I9300_mx_20120329.pit but then it does SET pit and hangs on "Get PIT for Mapping".
Is there any chance to save my phone ? I'm getting really desperate here.
Product name blank = sds. Only samsung service Centre can repair

Hm, it worked for me once , try connecting it to odin in downlode mode and try installing cmd form there, it should work and help you get your phone back. Since original rom is not working. If that wont work then i am not sure. i need to get a better understand of what you did to it,for the phone to go into brick mode.

Samsung Galaxy S3 - Many issues :(

Hello everybody,
I have ran into lot of issues in my Samsung Galaxy S3 I-9300. I bought it from UK(unlocked) two years ago.
The issue started with the recharge issues. It shows as it is charging but it doesn't charge and some times the battery suddenly increases by 30-50% on phone restart. And then one day I started encountering phone restart issue. I started losing files that I had copied or created during those times on my external SD card. I once saw that I had android robot fallen with red exclamation mark in the recovery screen. And then one day my phone won't go ahead of Samsung logo so I did a factory reset. After factory reset I thought everything will be fine but still I had few issues so I installed Kies and did a firmware upgrade from the Samsung site. But the recovery robot was still down with red exclamation mark. I thought rooting will help me in fixing it so I rooted the phone but no help. I finally installed stock recovery from odin and it fixed it. Everything looked fine. But I still had files getting deleted from SD card and phone auto restart issue. And recharging issue resurfaced as well and I was not able to recharge from wall charger. I had to switch off my mobile and recharge it from USB cable. I keep it overnight for approx. 8-9 hours at a stretch ans still charging would be around 60-70%. Yesterday my phone restarted on its own and now its getting stuck at Galaxy logo screen. Its not even going to Samsung screen. I can't go to recovery mode but I can still go to download mode. I tried installing stock recovery firmware today from odin and it failed. I can install stock image from odin but I want some solution as I can't keep on doing it again and again.
P.S: I did factory reset twice and after factory reset every time I restart few old applications were getting installed automatically which I had not selected.
Please help me guys.
Update:
Tried flashing stock recovery and stock rom. Nothing worked. Have took capture of the ODIN screen to give more clear idea. Thanks.

Try the rescue firmware here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735 << there are two versions you will find the pit file in the 4.1 version download. If this fails or issues come back then it will need service repair.

I agree he may have a battery problem but that would not explain all the other issues with Odin and recovery etc. I would still recommend flashing rescue firmware first before paying out for a new battery.
Yeah, I guess he might have some problems with his rom, but is kinda wierd too. Hey Crazy Access, have you tried access to recovery from an apk?, some of them do it, like Quick Reboot, or quick boot, search for them in Google play, take a look on it
Thanks for the replies tallman43 and adaltavo.
Adaltavo, my phone is not booting at all. It's not going beyond S3 screen to Samsung logo so I can't try recovery from any apk.
I am going to try recovery method in the link provided by tallman43 and will come back with the results.
Meanwhile, if you have any other tips do tell me.
Thanks.

You did not read the instructions in the rescue thread I gave you!! Are you seriously trying to brick your device? Why have you got nand erase all ticked in Odin this is a bad move where does it say to tick this!
Sorry to be harsh but you need to read instructions fully before attempting anything with your phone.Ttry again with Odin and follow the instructions exactly as posted in the screenshot in the rescue thread also maybe try Odin 1.85. But it looks like you have messed up your device even more. (Recommend Service repair) :crying:
Hi tallman. Thanks for the response. I actually downloaded the file from the link you gave, and there were four files but there was no pit file in it. So when I did search again in the forum for pit file I got another link where a user had the same problem and he did ticked the options so I tried that as well. And you were not harsh. It is irritating when you are trying to help and I didn't read the instructions carefully
I will try again and post results here.
Thanks for the help once again

What am I doing wrong? - Korean Note SHV-E160s

Hello everyone.
A few months ago my Korean Samsung Note 1 (SHV-E160S) bricked while updating an application. I left the phone as it updated an application over wifi. When I came back the screen was black. I pulled the battery and after that the phone would not fully boot. It would go into download and recovery mode only.
I have flashed (using Odin) the original firmware downloaded from various different websites. Every time however the loading bar would get to around 80-90% and would fail. When I power the phone up after the fail it would show a yellow triangle with Korean text stating that the upgrade was not completed and please connect to Kies. No access to download or recovery. I have tried restoring through Kies but Kies does not recognize the phone.
I have tried flashing all the different versions of original firmware(for SHV-E160S) I could find(as I do not know the version of the firmware that was on the phone before it bricked). I have also tried 4 different computers, 3 different USB cables, many different USB ports and multiple versions of Odin. Always fail.
I have even tried a suggestion to flash using the PIT file after flashing the PDA file. When I do that the Samsung screen comes up with the blue loading bar but the loading sometimes gets stuck or the phone reboots. But I do have access to download and recovery when using the PIT file.
This phone has caused me much stress. I am at the point I should just buy a new phone as I have already spent many hours trying to revive this phone.
Please if someone has any other suggestions I would appreciate it very much.
Hope this helps

You have to use quincyatt roms for you phone, im guessing you have a sgh-i717 att, tmobile,Rogers,Fido, or Telus ?
never use a korean rom on these phones because there for our phones. I've tried this rom and it didnt work so I had to pull out the battery and go to recovery mode and flash it to my rom I used before.
As for trying to flash your phone back to stock, if odin isnt working, use the flashable zip and flash it through twrp or cwm.
Hope this helps
- Cheers
Actually as stated in my post I am using the Korean Note SHV-E160s.
I am downloading a custom rom called SayanogenMod and also CWM and will see what happens.

So the Sayanogen did not work. CWM does the same thing that Odin does. It gets to like 90% and then the screen just goes black and stays that way until I pull the battery. Then after reboot the phone freezes on blue bar loading screen...
This is so frustrating....

Thats kinda weired, I've always run into problems with my note and I've always use odin and it works perfecly.
try downloading this rom, im guessing its the custom rom for your phone http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-att/general/rom-galaxy-note-korean-shv-e160k-s-t2873791 , flash it with odin and make sure you use the latest versions of odin. see if that would work
Hope it helps :good:

Oh snap that sucks, the same thing happened to me and I got it fixed by using odin.
Some times it can be the usb port. If you do want another Samsung note 1, you can try buying it off ebay, really cheap.
