I've poked around a bit on here and couldn't find a resolution to this issue, so I decided to make a post about it. I have a Sony Z Ultra GPe; bone stock, never rooted or ROM'd. I've been having sporadic issues with the power button. I can't tell if they're hardware or software related, though. Sometimes the button won't respond at all, but it will allow me to hit power and volume up to reset it. This last time, it won't respond to the power button period. I hit the red reset button, and now it won't turn on at all. Phone has plenty of charge to it.
Any ideas?
I had the same issue and it really bothered me. Decided to call Sony and sent it off for repair. They took a look at it and had to completely replace the phone. The whole process took about 14 business days plus travel time so make sure you have a backup device because you won't see it back for about a month.
Note: Phone was still under warranty and I literally just got it back last week.
Sir,my mobile(Sony Xperia z ultra )power button was always pressed and it was not work but the volume up button was used for unlock the screen when it locked. There is a problem for my mobile automatically turn on when it turn off

Had to get my one day old Nokia 800 replaced today.
Got everything setup last night and decided to power it off just to give it a restart. The phone would refuse to power back on. No amount of button pushing/reconnecting to the power would make it start up again. No power, nothing..dead.
I managed to get it to restart after performing the three button reset. No problem I thought maybe just a one off. Turned the phone off and put it on charge overnight and this morning the same problem returned.. Could not power on. This time the reset would not work at all, no matter how many times I tried.
Carphone warehouse swapped it over in store today for another handset. Hopefully I'll have more luck with the replacement.
Edit: already seen someone else mention a similar problem on here. Hope there's not a bigger issue.
How do you perform the three button reset? My phone randomly decided to turn off whilst I was driving and now it wont turn back on
Yes I've been in that spot as well. For five minutes the phone wouldn't respond to any power button press. Long, short, whatever. I was already starting to slide into panic mode when it suddenly came back alive on another short press.
It's not the only hardware problem I've encountered, I also have problems with touchscreen and buttons and a loose part inside the device.
I found a couple posts about this but people seemed to just return or RMA it. Thought maybe my experience might help others and was curious if anyone else has this problem.
A few times I have picked up the Prime and hit the power button and the display would not come on. If I plugged it in I would see the green light on the power button come on and go off when unplugged. It appeared to still be attached to the WIFI. If I held the button down it would buzz, but nothing else.
I found out that if I held the button down, waited for it to buzz then continued to hold it down for another 30 secs or so (seems like it takes forever) the Prime would then reboot and I would get the Eee Pad boot screen.
I have been storing my Prime in the box to keep it clear of kids and cats until I get a case. My wife ended up picking up this cheap case from Walmart which used rubber bands around the corners, and this triggered the problem by holding down the volume up button. I have not been able to reliably reproduce it, but it seems like holding down the volume button (or combo of power and volume button) puts the device in some diagnostic mode or something that shuts off the screen.
The natural tendency to release the power button immediately after the buzz while trying to reset made the device seem like it was broken. Luckily I figured out how to start it back up so I did not return it or RMA; however I wonder how many others experienced this problem.
This appears to be a software problem and not a hardware issue. I have not had this happen since I started being cautious about the volume buttons, but have not tried to reproduce on the last firmware update.
I have had no other issues with the Prime. It runs great, WIFI works for me and I could care less about the GPS issue. However, this display thing has scared me a handful of times until I figure out how to reset it.
Anyone else have this kind of issue? I was going to wait for ICS and then see if I could reproduce it before calling ASUS, but it has not been crippling especially once I figured out that when all else failed just hold down the power button until the screen came back on.
I've had this problem as well, three or four times so far. Actually, it happened to me on the first full day I had mine, and was really freaking me out. I've been using the pinhole reboot button to get it working, but it sounds like you were more patient with the power button than I was.
I can't replicate it either, exactly, but I've noticed that it's only happened after extended periods (6+ hours) of inactivity without charging. I also looked at my battery usage last night, and saw that my device constantly is awake; maybe somethint's happening when it tries to sleep?
Anyway, I feel the same way you do - I'm waiting for it to happen on 4.0(.3?) before I really worry.
I've had this happen twice. held down the power button to reboot. I can't reproduce it either, but I don't have any problem with the device sleeping. I'm at 50 hours of uptime now (15 on current charge) and have not run into it. Mildly glad to see its not just me though.

Only once tonight. Scared me until I saw the boot screen. Interesting since it has been rock solid until this. No other problems just didn't turn on. Glad to be back working.

never had that issue...have used it quite a lot in many different situations
This morning it didn't wake up. I got it to turn on by holding get down the power and volume down button. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

happened to me tonight freaked me out for a while - had to use the reset pin hole
I've had the same exact problem andthe funny thing is I also have a case from Walmart with the rubber bands. Is yours the case logic? Since reading this post, I've removed the upper left band. I wish my case would ship already!
guys if you're familiar with transformer 1 and hacking\custom ROM tegra devices power + vol up = apx mode kind of download mode blank screen, nothing wrong with the device just working like it should. now just a blank screen with sound when u plug in could be defective screen has happened to me
Awesome to know this is expected behavior.
I didn't have the original transformer, and googling has just led me to people who can/can't get into the mode, so I'll ask here: what exactly is apx mode? I get what it's for, sort of, but what is it?
also happened to me while it was in a case. maybe the power button was pressed too long or something...
this happened to me yesterday, except the screen is still off....tried everything mentioned and it wouldnt turn back on, its fully charged...i get no buuz sound or anything...
LOL, I was just searching for a thread like this.
Mine has been working flawless for the last 4 days. This morning, would not turn on. I tried every combo and button push I could think of.
No LED charging lights, nada.
I finally reverted to the paper clip in the reset hole. Booted right up.
Don't know what the issue is.
reset button wont even work for me...
Yes It happend to me yesterday twice... i think if we leave it for an extended period without out charge , the screen is getting locked somehow... both the times i have held the power button till the buzz.. then it rebooted....
Same behavior here, was fully charged in the Morning, and plugged in, when i got home Both LED's (Dock and Tab) were green but the Screen won't turn on, pressing the Power button for 10sec rebooted the device, maybe some kind of power saving feature... hopefully it will be fixed with ICS
Okay, rockstatus90's problem seems different, but the rest of us, pceasar explained that we're likely entering APX mode, right? It's designed behavior? Now I just want to know what APX mode is, and if there's an easier way to exit than rebooting.
Happened twice for me so far.

Yes this is normal. Although most other Android devices seemed to give some sort of on screen message.
It is mentioned here as a process of rooting the original TF:
http://eeepadhacks.net/transformer-hacks/how-to-root-your-eeepad-transformer/
Basically, this is a mode that outputs to your PC and is supposed to blank your screen. You are supposed to reboot afterwards, so there is no other way out.
I have not had the problem since being sensitive about pushing volume+ and power at the same time.

Unfortunately it looks like return or rma is your solution. I would try to call Asus and see if they can troubleshoot it. Best case they can reset it for; worse case its dead.
Really wish you could pull the battery. Thats the sure fire reboot.
Picked up my blue s3 from phones 4 u on Saturday and last night the power button kind of broke... If I press it it doesn't click back and sends the phone into restarts....until I pick it out again.
No blues left on orange from phones 4 u in North London at present so am awaiting a replacement although the phone is fully functional along as I don't press the power button.
Hopefully is a one off but just thought I'd get it out there in case any others get the problem to.

You should be able to go to Phones 4 U and they should give a sim free one, just pop your current sim in and it will work, you don't need one on orange, unless phones 4 u sell branded ones, which I highly doubt.
This did not need its own thread!!!!
If I have assisted you, please press Thanks button.

So where would you have put it? XDA-Dev is becoming too bloated lately. Search results are too broad - a limitation of vB I think. Some people now are just posting new threads in 'General' and to be honest, I don't blame them. Sorry, I didn't press your 'thanks' button.
My wife also has a broken power button now (bad luck or production?) on the blue S3. It's all wobbly and the device is constantly in a bootloop. Going into recovery and download mode shows their menus for a second or two and again it reboots. The phone came with a new T-Mobile subscription. No phone support in the weekend so trying to get this fixed at a T-mobile store tomorrow. Or do we need to contact Samsung directly? The phone is less than 10 days old (in our possession).
Go to the T-Mobile store. They should have to replace the phone for you there and then.

I too got my SIII from phones 4 u orange but white edition with same power key problem. it keeps on restarting and very sensitive power button just a touch ll kick you into poweroff. i returned the piece next day. and got a new one now it's working flawlessly.
Got my replacement Friday from phones 4 u, so far seems ok. When i done mine i thought it might not be the only one. Was just how easy it went. No hard pressure or nothing. Be careful of those power buttons in the coming months / year ..
I searched through a few 'return to stock ROM' threads and found some other complaints about the power button, but this seemed to be the most appropriate place to post. Hopefully this helps someone with a similar situation.
I had a great setup with a rooted, unlocked Samsung Galaxy S3 running the latest AOKP nightly build, but then my power button broke. Apparently it's a common thing on the SGS3. I'd press the power button to turn off the screen, it would flash off, then immediately come back on again. I didn't want to physically modify the hardware because I wanted a replacement (I pay my carrier each month for insurance). My carrier won't accept a phone for warranty replacement if the software has been modified. They sent me a replacement phone, but I had to send the broken one back or risk being charged full retail. I could get into download mode, but it would reboot after a couple seconds (because the phone thought I was holding in the power button all the time). I could boot the phone, but it would take 10 or 15 tries. In the end, I mailed my phone back mostly stock. They received it a few days ago, but everything should be fine.
Here's what I did:
1) Titanium Backup of all my apps, copy all files I wanted to keep onto external storage (Nandroid wasn't an option since I couldn't stay in recovery without rebooting)
2) Purchase and install root triangle away and reset the flash counter
3) reset factory defaults using the system settings menu
4) reboot and log into Google (disabled account sync)
5) save the stock ROM to internal memory
6) Purchase and install mobile ODIN
7) load the stock ROM file into mobile ODIN and flash
The phone rebooted, started flashing the bootloader, kernel, and started to flash the stock ROM and then the power button caused it to reboot. When I powered the phone on, it showed a stock Samsung banner and I could see that the flash counter had not been tripped. If they fix the power button and re-flash the stock ROM, it'd be in good enough condition to sell it as refurbished.

I have a white S3 and using it with no problem for past few months.
Recently, i got bootloop when i tried to turn off screen by pressing power button and i thought it is the ROM faults as I flashed a lot.
So, i flashed to other ROM and it still happened until a point where i had to take out a battery.
AT THAT MOMENT, i realized that it didn't happened anymore (im using a cover/casing/whatever-we-call-it and i have plenty of it).
So, i put it back into the cover, and it happened again when i press the power button but it doesn't always happened, ONLY when i press it from certain angle.
So, i put it into a flipcover that also cover the power button (the other cover i used is not the flip cover and it have a hole at the power button is placed) and it didn't happened no matter how many times i press the power button.
I tried to further proof it to myself by trying to press the power button from the angle where i had to do IF im using the other cover and it DID happened and gave me a bootloop again after a few attempts. It happened as if when pressed from certain angle, the button is somehow stuck.
So, for my case, it seems that my power button is now worn and might broken anytime soon because of the cover that i used. For now, im trying to not use power button as much as possible especially when i use a cover that have a hole for power button and the hole is quite close to the button.
Brand new s3.
power button doesn't seem to work. Anyone else?
not a known issue, take it back.
You realise you need to hold the POWER button down for a length of time?
Same problem. I haven't installed any apps or anything not either previously installed on another phone or tablet. Button isn't stuck, just totally unresponsive. Guess a trip to best buy is in my future
Add me to the list. My power button stopped working a few days ago.
I thought mine had died until I realised the batter had gone flat but I'm quite sure that's not the issue here.
Yea happened to me too. Maybe some water spilled. If not you have been abusing the power button. Better get a sleep wake cover like a finite and don't let the battery die. Power button issues went away after a few hours. Trick is to keep insisting the tab that power button still works don't give up.
Also press it in centre don't go wayward while pressing.
If you got issue with power button and got warranty get it changed for a replacement device... DO NOT GO FOR REPAIR SAME DEVICE.
Also if you connect charger and remove and connect trick is to learn how it works tab s3 should turn on without power button required. Just make sure you got that fingerprint unlock also keep screen timeout less if u don't have auto sleepwake cover
I have a feeling I am hosed this time but the last time this happened a couple of weeks ago I got the phone to cut back on. Simply put I had the thing just sitting there and it is suddenly off. No shut down or anything it just turned off. Power button did nothing. Also holding the power and vol down did nothing. To fix it before I had to plug it into a charger while holding power and eventually it would come on. This doesnt seem to work today. Are there any key combinations I can try to make it work?
I am going to do an AT&T warranty replacement but they are really hard to deal with. I got a hold of someone by chat and they told me I would get a call back. Of course I do but it was only a call back to put me on a long hold. I am sorry this is supposedly a pandemic but you need to have someone to answer your phones or complete the transactions online. This is absurd.
Also, I take it they fixed these phones so that you can no longer bypass the security settings and get into EDL mode? I guess I can get data off of my device because they design them to be harder to get data off of it.
