Hi,
maybe it is a stupid question, but how do they (verizon) technically find out that someone tether over 3G, when you have a unlimited data plan (3G) and use 3G normaly from your phone to download? What is the difference between the data that comes over 3G when I download the same pdf to phone or over wifi/3G tether to the iPad ? It makes no sense to me.
Thanks for your answers
The amount of data you use is one method. The other is that they are building in tethering monitoring to the kernels that sends a message to the system that you're tethering.
I know for the DX/D2 the leak of GB from Verizon actually had a tether detection and every time you tried to tether, weather it was barnicle or wireless tether it would redirect you to Verizons website and asked if you wanted to tether to pay another fee ....idk if it will happen with this phone is VZ does decide to push out a GB for us ...

The Fascinate has "hidden" tether protection that we have bypassed thanks to the kernel sources, but it is there in the stock kernel.

So there is a program that work in the background sending data to the carrier when you use Wifi and 3G at the same time ?

Either a program/service within the framework, or a special command/method is used to notify the network that you're tethering.
But if we are using a ROM such as Evil Fascination or Community then they wouldn't be able to tell because of the custom kernels that come with them right?
Yes, the custom kernels all have it bypassed as far as I am aware. At least we think that we have bypassed it.
Thanks for the information, its very interesting . If I am understand it right, there is a part of it in the ROM and a second in the kernel. They have to work together, if one of the parts missing like in a custom kernel it prevent the phone from sending ?

Even if you're using verizon's 3G mobile hotspot app? Or do you have to download a different wireless tethering app? (Which we can't cause verizon blocked all of them from the market lol)

I know from working on a customers account that info your asking is clearly defined under current usage tab in our system...it divides the data used into smartphone usage and tethered usage...assuming they considered tether in the sense of hardwired and wireless...yes it is crazy what we can see from your phone reporting to us....will the system know? yes....will someone at verizon care? probably, are they going to pick thru every little customers account who has EVER tether and charge them? probably not....just dont poke the bear and you'll be fine...

hopefully they dont change it where that tethered usage is automatically added to your bill. im on comm rom so it shouldnt affect me but those that arent should be careful or consider a custom rom
from what I had read at one time on ATT's tethering crackdown, the system was easily able to tell due to one little piece... the TTL.
here's a quote and more info on it... probably pertains to verizon as well.
For all you wondering how they can tell:
All IP packets have something called a TTL associated with them. It stands for Time To Live. Every "hop" along the network from one router to the next reduces the TTL by one. When it reaches 0, the packet is dropped. This was introduced to keep routing problems from overloading the network. If for example, by some error a packet was going around in a circular path, the TTL would eventually reach 0 and prevent a packet storm.
The thing is, ALL routing devices do this. OSes use standard TTLs. For example, let's say both your iPhone and laptop use 127 for the TTL. AT&T will receive packets from your iPhone with a TTL of 127, but since the packets from your laptop pass through your iPhone first, they arrive at AT&T with a TTL of 126. They can detect a tethered device this way.
EDIT: Some people below have suggested changing the default TTL of their tethered device (which is possible). I would just like to point out that the max TTL allowed is 255, and if the iPhone uses 255 as its default TTL, well there's no way you can set it to 256.

I'm not sure if our android tethering apps take this into account and change the TTL of the traffic on the fly or not... would be interesting to test out though...
Could you possibly get a mobile 3G network on the SGP 5.0?

Well, since there is no 3g antenna, that means there is no possible way to get 3g, unless you buy a mobile hotspot.
Mobile hotspot or phone with wifi tethering.

If your on AT&T and have a non-smart phone Samsung Mythic... you can tether it to your iPod Touch (granted you have one) and make an Ad-Hoc network with it via the wireless, then connect to it on your SGP. Battery life is fantastic so you can just keep the other two devices (the phone and iPod) in a backpack or something near you. Tedious but it works, especially since the data is unlimited on a non-smartphone plan (and they don't notice, or at least haven't for the last 2 years) if you Bluetooth DUN tether.

As far as I know, bluetooth tethering won't work with Android. So you'd need a phone with WiFi to share the 3G connection over. If your blackberry doesn't have WiFi, you'd need another device that does as the middle-man. Which becomes a bit of a hassle.
Google your phone and it's modem and make sure you won't get any extra charges for tethering (most phones WILL lead to charges without a tethering plan on unlimited data, but some seem to be hidden). And if you do, just pay for a tethering plan I suppose.

Then there is probably a guide somewhere on how to share it, I don't know whether or not AT&T will see it though, so be warned, I wouldn't risk a smartphone unlimited plan for that kind of thing. In my case, I pay for non-smartphone unlimited data and tether it so I don't really lose anything if I'm caught (It's been over 2 years so far) since it's like $10/month for AT&T 3G HSDPA.

I don't think Bluetooth DUN is possible over Android. I know it is on iOS, but I don't think anyone has gotten it to work with non-Android phones (like a Blackberry or my Samsung featurephone).
You could use your BlackBerry to make a Wireless network, but that COULD impose extra charges depending on your carrier (AT&T charges a good $10+ extra (can't remember the exact).

That depends on the Carrier. Here in the states AT&T requires that you go to a new plan (limited) and charges you for the privilage of sharing your data. Or you can try CM's new undetectable tethering as it is done at a lower level than the providers see.

Interesting, have more info on this? Considering that AT&T detects tethering using browser useragent now (DO NOT USE Dolphin HD or any other browser that uses a desktop useragent on AT&T if you're on an unlimited plan!), there's no way to do undetectable tethering without an encrypted VPN.
To others - whether tethering costs you depends on your carrier. If you're in North America, it's basically guaranteed that your provider wants you to get a special tethering plan. It's usually possible to get around this, but as discussed above - providers try really hard to find ways to bust you. Tethering a Player should not cause any of the AT&T triggers discussed above though - I've been tethering my Tab 10.1 for ages without issue.

The bottom line is No. This device DOES NOT have a hidden/internal antenna and you can't mod it to have one. "External devices" would be a hotspot or cell phone that is sharing it's connection via tethering. Though I wouldn't consider that "3G for SGP", more like, "WiFi for SGP" since that's all it is; You can't make calls over the voice network through that data through your normal phone.
Kind of a silly question in general heh, but unless you go through a good deal of trouble to either get a hotspot device and carry it around, or do the Phone -> iPod Touch -> SGP thing I do; There really isn't any other way to do this.
I have an Optimus phone. Just added a Widgetsoid2 Hotspot toggle, push the button, and presto SGP connected. It is against terms of service on Virgin Mobile, but I plan on getting rid of my phone and getting Truconnect mifi. $5/mo Hotspot (plus .039 per mb). I use less than 100mb on 3G now that I have my SGP5.
You can make calls on wifi or 3G with GrooveIP. That's all I use on wifi, and I tested it tethered to my phone and also works fine.
What does it exactly mean when people say tethering may be "undetected"? Does this mean data will go to At&t and not be charged? I'm on a family plan and theres a total of 10gb's a month for everybody or something. I have already used 3gb mostly from tethering to my phone whenever my wifi starts acting up detected under the data settings on my phone.
Is there a way of receiving data free of charge somehow?
oops.
I meant to put this in the General section. If someone could kindly....
Att charges extra for tethering so if it's undetected they just charge it as data

Why are you looking for anything untraceable, if you pay for the service good....if not, then pay for it, but seems you are looking to go around your service provider to be able to provide data/connection to others or something else....am I misunderstanding you?
Bottom-line your service provider will detect sooner or later.

Unlimited is provisioned differently than limited data plans... hence the "subscription check".
Limited data plans can tether all they want, just hope you never hit that limit and get on the dime for overages
There's an unanswered question up there, and it's an important question for the "unlimited" peeps on VZW here!
edit: it has nothing to do with "rooting" or "not rooting" like the op says. I'm hoping he has unlimited, but have had the last few Samsung devices on VZW, and it's not promising for us unlimited data folk. Most unlimited tethering changes involve more than installing a widget, but I'm not familiar with this one.
Someone please report if it works with unlimited data, and then please report 35 days later when your new bill comes in. Do it again 70 days out.

No widget is going to circumvent Unlimited Data Tethering as stated in the OP's post today. :good::good:
Can confirm. The widget trick works for people on unlimited data plans.
Also. I used to do it this way all the time with my s3 never got charged for it if that answers your question. I switched to WiFi tether because the verizon one kept dropping the signal while tethering.

Thanks very much! After shelling out $700 full retail for the S4 (did the same for the S3)to maintain unlimited data, I'm glad to see a working option for wifi tethering so quickly available. This activated the hotspot without subscription verification, which by all appearances is what the methods I used on the S3 did too, so frankly, I'm not overly concerned about big red being able to discern that I'm tethering, while not actually subscribing to that service. Thanks again!
Unlimited here and the shortcut for WiFi tethering works great. No luck with USB tethering widget or other usb shortcuts I've found in the play store... it always goes to confirm subscription and then tells me to call customer service.
I have unlimited data, but I have the hotspot option under the more networks catagory. I am not rooted. Are you sure you need this? Try uninstalling it and see if you have the hotspot there.

Everyone has that option regardless of their plan, as it's built into the phone. Since you have unlimited data without a tethering plan, if you try to start it you'll get a subscription message. If you use one of the widget to start tethering it bypasses this.
If you remove it it won't work AFAIK.
Works perfectly on my S4 with unlimited data.

just had a thought and would like to know what you guys think
if i were to use Bluetooth tethering for an always on internet connection (which would probably be better on battery then WiFi tethering and would still work out of WiFi zones) and then if i really don't want to carry my phone like when i go to a movie or a nice dinner or the gym etc. i will just move my sim card from the note 4 into the gear s. problem solved i think! because there is no way im paying for a second line with my carrier. the reason i wouldn't use WiFi tethering on the phone either and would opt for Bluetooth tethering is because it would save battery on the phone and i wouldn't have a tethering icon in the top left, i like to keep my notification bar clean. okay i think im done rambling so what do you guys think about this solution?
Has no one else had the same idea?
When I had the gear 1 and my Note 3 I used Bluetooth tethering all the time. Hopefully tizen has an app for that. I agree I don't want an additional line for a Smart watch so did you plan to buy the watch outright? Or how do you plan to ditch the monthly plan from your carrier just wondering I have a Note 4 now
