Hi, all.
I'm a recent Galaxy Note convert. Migrated from years of glitchy and crap service from Sprint, and also a defective HTC EVO 3D. I absolutely LOVE my Note in ceramic white. However, I have had a couple of initial teething issues that I don't know are actual "problems," or just what to expect with a new Android device.
My Note is pretty much flawless most of the time, but there are instances where I've had random reboots, prolonged freezing up of the device (like when selecting certain live wallpapers and customizing their effects), and other times when transitioning from one program to the homescreen, and my phone will lag up and the icons will disappear off the screen and slowly reload a few icons at a time until everything is there, again. Also, I just realized that sometimes when I have alarms set to go off, they won't wakeup my screen. The alarm will go off but the screen will remain off. Other times the alarm will wakeup my device and turn the screen on.
So, my question is... should I be concerned and demand a new phone from Best Buy Mobile, or are these normal issues and nothing to really worry about? When I went to Best Buy, yesterday, to try and get a new phone, they were really apprehensive about it. They told me that AT&T would not allow them to replace the phone if the issues couldn't be replicated in the store (of course!). The rep did say some valid things to me about what could be causing the issues, but the whole random rebooting thing is what really has me concerned. He told me the phone was so new and that software updates have really came out yet to address any type of initial issues. Do you all agree or should I really try to get a new device??

I would get it replaced. I have not had a random reboot in both the stock rom and the SauROM custom rom. I know many others here, do not have random reboots. Something is definitely wrong hardware wise.
No random reboots or freezing on mine.

If you're getting random reboots on stock rom with no OC, then definitely go and demand a new phone. This sounds like faulty hardware. I've never had a random reboot, even though I am undervolting and OC'd to 1.83Ghz.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I am running stock ROM. So now it seems like I'm having two problems... the first being that literally no store in my immediate area has anymore ceramic white Notes in-stock and the second being the unwillingness of BB Mobile reps to replace the phone. Today ends my 14-day trial with AT& (even though I have 30-days to make a final decision) and I'm limited on how much I can do today due to an engagement I must attend, tonight. Does anyone have anymore suggestions on what I can or should do? Thanks for much for helping me sort through this. I knew that random reboots didn't sound right.

When u overclock do you notice the phone grtig hotter than when you don't?

The other stuff you mention (laggy screen transitions and such) seems to be par for the course where just about any Samsung Galaxy phone is concerned, to differing degrees on different devices, but there's zero reason why a brand new device should be locking up and powering off on you, unless there's more to the story.
In either case, dump it and get a new one.

Thanks. There's no more to the story. Haven't really played around with the phone much or modified anything. Anything modifications I've done have been 100% stock. I guess I'll have to try and get the black/blue Note and before my 30-days or up, hope to swap it out for another ceramic white. Considering this wasn't my fault and BB gave me the run-a-round.
Do what you have to do, but get that sucker replaced. If you have to raise your voice with them and tell them they sold you faulty hardware and you want a replacement or a full refund. If they say no, tell them to get their boss, if that person says no, tell them to get their boss. Eventually they will say their boss is not there, at that point tell them to get the DM (district manager) on the phone. Someone will bend and give you want you deserve, that's the whole point of a return policy. Honestly if they did absolutely ANYTHING but give me what I wanted with a smile on their face, I would demand a refund as they have not erned my money. Take that refund and go to an ATT store or go online and buy that phone. I have had to take the "get your boss" route several times when they tried to give me the run around and I know I'm right. Once someone tried to tell me that they wern't aloud to call/contact their DM (this was a radio shack), so i found called another radio shack and just asked "whos your DM...ok and I need to contact him, can I have a number" and about 5 minutes of hold I had their number and called him directly to tell him the BS I was dealing with. At some point you will get the guy who isnt taking the return personally and knows his job is to smooth this crap out, simple as that.

Thanks for the excellent response. I just returned from the BB Mobile store I purchased my Note from. Even though I was told BEFORE I came that they had ONE ceramic white Note left... when I got there, I was told not only did they not have anymore white Notes (and haven't had any for a few days) but they were completely sold out of black Notes. I was then told to "factory reset" my phone, as a "be all to end all" solution. I feel so exhausted. I'm scared to ask for a refund and then go to an AT&T store and AT&T tells me they won't approve me for a line of service. I know it's most likely improbable that will happen, but you never know. I just don't want to be locked into a contract and then they have the ultimate freedom to not work with me. But what you said makes a lot of sense. I wish you had posted your response before I went to the BB Mobile store. I really don't want to take a second trip there, tonight.

I understand man, its a chore to deal wit hthis crap. I do not know how the deal between ATT and BB works, but if you have a ATT store around maybe give them a call and tell them about what your dealing with, or hell call ATT customer service and tell them that they sold you a defective phone and you're just trying to get a new one. Wiping may actually help, but who knows. Your on a time crunch, I'd be more aggressive with every passing day. Maybe someone here can shed some light on the relationship between the two entities and if there is anything ATT can do.

Thanks again for all of your help. I was actually thinking about calling AT&T and saying what you suggested. I think I'll give them a call when I'm done with my engagement. Again, I appreciate all of your help and suggestions.

A little off topic, but what did you undervolt to? I am running at 1.83ghz right now, and am curious what you undervolted to. Anything to save a little heat from forming and battery life for this thing
*UPDATE* So I just got off the phone with AT&T customer service. Now, grant it, this is only my second experience dealing with AT&T customer service and they were probably bending over backwards for me because I am not a customer locked to contract... but I have a very pleasant and satisfying experience with AT&T. Not the horror stories I've heard online. I talked to two different reps, one regular rep and another in the warranty dept, and both were helpful, knowledgeable, and shutdown all of the lies Best Buy had told me.
Both reps said they had no idea why BB was being asses about giving me a new phone. The rep in the warranty dept went much further, and apologized to me for all of the troubles they put me through ... and specifically stated that she had no idea why BB didn't simply give me a brand new phone, as that's the whole reason AT&T has the 30-day buyers remorse policy. She said it didn't matter what the reason was for my wanting a new phone, I am still covered under the 30-day policy, and BB should have simply given me a brand new replacement phone.
The final recommendation was since I technically bought my phone from BB, normally the policy would be I would have to get BB to honor AT&Ts policy and give me a new phone. But, because of all of the lies and run-a-round, AT&T recommended I go to an actual AT&T Store and they should pretty much be able to give me a new Note. AT&T setup a time to call me on Monday, to find out if I was able to get a replacement phone. They notated my account, and they said that if for some reason I wasn't able to get a new phone at the AT&T Store, the warrant dept would send out a new phone to me. A bit of a hassel, but overall it seems like my issue will be resolved (I hope!).

Yes, I'm getting to that point, too. And it doesn't help they usually employ riff-raff trash around my area. I am calling BB during normal business hours to cancel my insurance with them. I've spent like $1,500 with them in the last year or so and another $350+ with getting the Note, and to be lied to over some B.S., just has me really soured. I would rather just have my insurance through AT&T.
Hate to hear all that mess...best buy mobile is going further and further down hill. Att was right...best buy should have replaced the phone. If they had none they should have secured one by order or sent you to a store that had one. Even if you were out of the 30 days the insurance would have covered you.

Hiya! Thanks for remembering moi lol. AT&T wasn't at all flattered that BB tried to throw them under the bus. I was fully expecting AT&T to confirm what BB had told me, but to my surprise, they said I was entitled to a new phone and should have been given one. I ended up going to a Best Buy Mobile outlet and an actual Best Buy Store. They all claimed they were fresh out of any Notes. One of them told me they had one in-stock, but when I got there, I was immediately told that was incorrect and they had no more. Called another BB in my area, they were supposedly fresh out, too. If there's any good news from all of this, it's that the Note must apparently be extremely popular! Either that or Samsung shipped very limited quantities. At any rate, I can't wait til BB customer service center opens, so I can cancel my insurance with them. I'm also taking back my Galaxy Tab to BB. I've barely used it since getting the Note. If I do decide I need a tablet, I'll see what the Galaxy Note 10.1 is all about.

I qualify for a stack of different discounts (can only have one though) and Everytime they "fix" my account I end up gettings texts telling me to call this number and verify my discount. When I call they tell me they need me to send them more paperwork. Im still in my 30day window, but barely, so I'm going down to the store tonight with box and receipts and telling them to have it fixed while standing there or refund me, no other options, no wait and see if this worked, no email BS. Either it works or it doesnt, simple as that. Im hoping I'll still be around this forum with my note and not another section of XDA with a new carrier.

I hope you get this sorted out. Discounts are a huge thing. I don't even know if I qualify for any discounts. With Sprint, they made it sort of obvious to find out what discounts I was eligible for. Doesn't appear to be the same with AT&T. I guess I'd have to do my own homework.
Well, if anyone is interested, i filed a complaint with the BBB, REGARDING the locked bootloaders vs the unlocked, as unfair business practice against the people who casn't unlock, probably won't help, like everything else we've tried, but had to give it a shot

Expanding complaints to the BBB got me thinking... How about the Public Utilities Commission? A quick search found this:

Includes information about complaining to FCC and State Attorney's office as well. Interesting comment in the State Attorney section:
"· Describe the problem. Describe as completely as you can the problem with the product or service you have purchased. Were you told something that was untrue? Describe what you were told and how it was untrue.
· Explain what you want the business to do. Specifically state how much money should be refunded or exactly how you want a product fixed or a service performed."
Weren't we told that the bootloader could be unlocked when we bought these?

yes, well i think what might be verizon's downfall here is the fact they allowed unlock for 2 wks then locked it down, it's like they baited people to buy the phone, this is not a good thing, in my eyes, i think it's our loophole. as it where
I think you guys are stretching. I never heard anything about this phone being bootloader unlocked. It was always the hope and then when some of us got in everyone was nicely surprised.
This phone is not the first time that something like this has happened. Verizon pretty much locks the bootloader on every phone because it "provides us a better service". We all know that is crap but that is how they justify it.

well, your probably right, but none the less some at first got unlocked, either by an oversight from htc or verizon. it still leaves the fact that it's not right to the people who after reading it was unlockable went and ordered the phone, myself included. this i hope will be their downfall in this situation, the big red making a mistake, really
i herd from the BBB, all they told me was they were contacting verizon yesterday, haven't heard back yet. that's about all i can report.
i recieved a letter today from the BBB, stating they contacted verizon, the attached letter is their response, it was tha same generic deal we all recieved before stating their excellence of customer satisfaction blah blah blah, same old story, so that did no good, lets keep on truckin though.
i have to respond within 10 days or they will consider the matter closed, i will of course contact them(BBB) hell i already know what they sent me.
Hi, so after searching the forum for a bit I've decided to post my question, this is also my first post even though I've been a member for awhile.. Just the first time I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. So hey hi hello. Okay. So. I am in need of a tutorial for the uninstall and replacement of the sim/micro sd port. Solder points ect. I'm not a master at modding devices, but I'm pretty sure this is within my ability. So yeah, thanks in advance.

haha, nothing that sinister. im just having trouble getting my device unlocked for gsm networks. just a thought i was having. anyways, i couldnt get sprint to do an international unlock on it because it didnt have a sprint number attached to it. apparently.. ive used chainfires region lockaway. didnt seem to work, as i was going through the terminal emulator i couldnt get the sim lock to turn off. which i assume affected the editing of the build.prop i couldnt add the ril. and ro. lines. which in turn affects editing the apn, i cant add a straight talk apn. so now im sitting just going through files looking at all of them, wondering if i do some hardware modding and then edit the corresponding files... if there is a way around sprints customer service ineptitude.
maybe get a sprint prepaid service for a month or two, and tell them you going out of the country:fingers-crossed:
yeah i was coming to that conclusion myself. really id only need a sprint card long enough to activate it with them. i was really hoping to avoid giving that ... evil evil company, anymore money. ill keep digging for a day or two and post any progress.

Yes sprint is a evil company ... How dare them not unlock a phone they are losing money on .... They pay full price and people want to get them cheap and unlock .. my phone is unlocked and had no problem doing it ...I have had sprint for about 10 years ... Do you really think that you should get a $700 phone and get it unlocked for like $200 and sprint just eat the rest. .. It's the reason there are international gsm phones ... You pay $700 and it's yours ... I just don't understand how all you people think by stealing these companies will not continue to allow this .... Should have got a vzw phone the government made them unlock them

Sorry if I offended you. I assumed xda was a community of individuals that enjoy the challenges of outsmarting giant companies that.. I'm sorry, aren't losing money off these phones. I don't believe for a second sprint pays 700 + for this device. And regardless, what is the percentage of consumers that take the time to learn how to do anything technical enough to be considered rude or less profitable to the company? ..1 maybe 2 %? Like I said.. Sorry if I offended anyone, definitely not my intention. I bought this phone full priced.. Because I ran the meid through straight talk byop and it came up as compatible for their service. Then spent another 60 at Walmart to buy their activation kit. Yeah I consider a company that will put regional and domestic locks on their devices to turn more profit evil, and not just that, if you remember the launch of this device they didn't come out and tell people what they were doing with the locks; they waited until their was too many negative comments and videos going around to ignore. Even now people/business's that are less tech savvy are paying full prices to unlock their phones because their told it's the only way. My bad.

If you paid full retail. .... If .... Yes they should unlock for you but you also have to see the company side. ... They are there to make money ... They are a public company ... They answer to Stock holders. .. They don't pay 700 but yet they pay way more than 200 and they get their money back by the customer fulfilling the contact they sign. ... If they lose 400 on one out of 20 phones. ... That amount is at least double that on s4 and lg g2 just because they are easier to unlock .... I can tell you this is not acceptable to the ceo and others running sprint . So I can almost guarantee it will get harder to unlock these phones because of it . I am not offended but I see both sides of the argument

I can tell you this is not acceptable to the ceo and others running sprint . So I can almost guarantee it will get harder to unlock these phones because of it . Geez I just realized my reply didnt post. If I remember correctly; it was really long winded, basically only amounting to one actual point, I just said I totally understand that aspect of it, and that I completely support the capitalistic way of life. Everyone from a CEO to a cashier at McDonald's is just trying to get paid and make the people around them happy. Really the only thing that bothers me is when they've clearly made their money off me, and now are gouging me for the few pennies and nickels I have left. I'm a typical poor college kid, so money really matters to me when I get it. And yes I did *really* pay full price for the phone, so this is just that much more annoying. I've mostly given up on getting it to work, aside from today, I put about 2 hours into digging around the net and snooping through the devices root directories. I had a thought that maybe if i could get a log of another note 3 source codes as a unrecognized sim was inserted, pushing the msl unlock prompt. maybe I could write an adb command emulating that. The problem I'm still stuck at is having an invalid sim error, tried 2 different carriers sim cards now (straight talk and verizon) having verizon show as invalid confused me because they are CDMA as well. Not really sure, Oh also getting a prepaid sprint plan apparently is a no go because their prepaid service only works for like three or four of their phones, and the note 3 isn't one of them. so I couldn't activate it if I wanted to.

They are first cdma phones not true gsm ... so sprint just like Verizon will never let another cdma phone on their system.... The only way to do such a thing is to change esn to a known good vzw esn ...which is illegal by the way ... You could never get vzw lte bands with this phone which is the only reason it has a sim card ... it can be put on cricket etc some other carriers as well ...do some research

I did some searching so it makes me suspect this isn't possible yet, but does anyone have a method to change the IMEI or MEID of the LG V30+ (Sprint, if that matters)? I need to change it and not just mask it.
The short story is I bought on on eBay but it was already tied to someone's account. The seller won't give me that person's contact info, Sprint won't tell me if there's a finance balance on it and if I can pay it off, and Sprint won't give me that person's contact info either. eBay declined my request for a refund, so now I'm just trying to see if I can make this thing usable at all.

I've done some research and can't find anything that says it is illegal in the United States, which is where I live. I do believe it's illegal in Europe but I don't intend to use the phone there so I'm not really concerned about that.
The way I see it I legally bought a phone. I was mislead a little bit, but the phone is not reported stolen so that means the original owner sold it legally to someone else who bought it. That original owner still owes Sprint money, but that should have nothing to do with the phone itself. So I'd just like to use the phone I paid for. I have an IMEI from an older phone that went into the toilet, so I don't really see the problem with swapping the IMEI of this one out for that one.

When I put the IMEI into swappa's IMEI checker it says "Financial Eligibility - Device is not eligible for resale (financed)." When I talk to Sprint (Which I've done over a few calls and trips to the store) they tell me it can't be put on my account because it's still attached to another account, but they don't tell me why at all. They've never told me if I could just take over payments for the phone, which is interesting since I've asked specifically about that. I wonder if something else is blocking this IMEI? So far I haven't been able to reach anyone at Sprint that can tell me anything about the phone's previous owner or any financial obligations on the phone.
Do you happen to know of a different IMEI checker I should try that might give me more information?

I'm sorry you are out the money....
But the flaw in your logic is that 2017 $800-$900 LG V30 phone still belongs to Sprint, until paid off. The person who "sold" it to you had no right to sell property they do not own (unless they used the money to pay off the balance). So, technically, they are stealing it. The only reason it's not been "reported" stolen is Sprint is probably taking care of this in civil proceedings as opposed to criminal proceedings? They are probably getting a judgement against the person. In which case, Sprint doesn't want to deal with you because that just complicates the case.
IF the person you bought it from had used that money to immediately pay of the balance, then everything would be OK. But they probably sold for lot less than owed to Sprint. (Sprint wants customers with recurring monthly payments, they don't want to be Best Buy. The financial price of the contract is probably a LOT more than the hardware cost of the phone.)
This phone was released in October. The user probably didn't make any payments, to be honest. So you would be out not only what you paid them, but probably the full amount they owe Sprint for up to two years?
Sprint also had deals where you would get a phone, get free first year service, but then be obligated to pay for 2nd year of service. People signed a legal contract. To get out of the contract they had to pay the value of what was still left. The amount owed on this phone might not be just the cost of the phone, but a year or two of Sprint service charges. I haven't seen the contract, I really couldn't care less about Sprint --- I've helped many friends escape Sprint -- I'm just speculating why Sprint isn't being helpful with you. It seems it's more than just the phone?
One Sprint deal was to LEASE TWO PHONES. LEASE one phone, get one for free:

In which case, they weren't even buying the phone from Sprint over two years, they were renting it.
I see this a lot with new Sprint phones sold on Craigslist and eBay -- lots of drama for some reason. Earlier this year was lots of posts for help in unlocking Sprint Galaxy S8/S8+. It's not that those model phones cannot be unlocked, it's that money was owed on them still. People were getting new Sprint phones for "free", then turning around and selling them on eBay, Craigslist. But they weren't free. They had signed a contract, and until the terms were fulfilled it was still Sprint's phones. So, it was really a scam.
In many countries, changing IMEI numbers is like changing VIN on a car. It's against the law, because either the car is stolen or some other bad intent is happening.

Contact your seller, explain the situation, and if the description didn't state the IMEI issue, or didn't state the item was AS-IS, contact paypal/ebay and open a dispute.

I appreciate all the comments from everyone. Although I'm not sure that simply changing your IMEI is specifically illegal, I can see 100% how someone could use that information to do something illegal and therefore this forum wouldn't want to discuss it.
I'm going to continue to try to use the resources nizmoboy98 provided to me to see if I can learn any more (They haven't been working so far and have me a little nervous that they are also some form of scam...but I'll give the benefit of the doubt).
If that doesn't give me any additional worthwhile information, then I'll have to sell it for parts on eBay and be much more upfront than the seller was to me. I won't make all my money back but maybe I can make some. (The seller did say the phone was as-is but also said the only problem with it was it was "Activated on someone else's account" which didn't mean the same thing to me as it did to him) I've learned a valuable and expensive lesson about checking IMEIs in the future.

If you paid by CC, just dispute the charges with your CC company and they'll give you your money back. (Chargeback) now if the seller indeed showed it was not usable, you're outta luck.

I appreciate that, and even though I'm paying extra for one I'm definitely thinking it's going to be the next phone I get. I've been on a Note 4 for a long time and it's on its last legs.

The IMEI is tied to that account, I don't think the SIM card would affect anything.

The purchase was through Paypal, and since eBay and Paypal are generally in lock step together. That being said, I should still take a shot, it wouldn't hurt. This is effectively a bad IMEI phone, and the seller said the problem with it was it was "activated on someone else's account." Those two things don't mean the same to me.

He's saying there are other providers who don't care that it's a blacklisted phone. That IF you get the phone carrier unlocked through an unlock code perhaps you can then use it with another service provider.
My understanding is there's a U.S. carrier blacklist covering all four major carriers. Whether there are loopholes, I don't know. Like maybe since is not actually been reported lost/stolen?
But there's also tons of U.S. MVNOs who may or may not suscribe to that list. Those MVNOs use the major carriers, like AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, but provide their own SIM cards.
I'm just explaining what the other person meant. What you do is your own decision.

Try and search ebay for the this seller and message the seller any questions you have. Ask seller if you will get refund if it does not work . im guessing sites that provide this service knows someone that works at sprint and maybe pays them under the table to change status of imei

Just to close this topic I called eBay just to give it one more shot (I'd already opened a case and had it denied, even after appeal). After speaking with them, they told me it's against eBay policy to sell a phone with a bad IMEI so they will actually go through with the refund. I immediately bought another version of this phone on swappa, so basically I think this is the happiest possible ending (except for the seller on eBay, who is about to have their phone back).

I own and I mean own a OnePlus Nord N10 5G on a T Mobile carrier. It's a decent phone I think, but the folks at T Mobile in the US apparently have a problem unlocking devices even though you own them. I spent over two hours on the phone and visited the store where I bought it from only to have wasted a ton of time. Can anyone tell me how to get around this? No, I don't owe money on the device, I paid cash at the carrier store. Apparently when you but a carrier phone from T-Mobile they require you to use it in network for 40 days before they will send you a token. To me this is a bunch of crap. I haven't put a new sim in as I am still using this carrier for service. It's just aggravating that this company wants so much control. Point being; it's MY PHONE!! I can get them to send my token for OnePlus in a month from now, so if there is a way I can get around that I am all ears. OnePlus Nord N10 5G T-Mobile

40 days for locked mobile to unlock. You have no pending money. You can ask for unlock code. You can temporary unlock for 15 days using their apps.
I called them again today, spent an hour to hear the lady say that it wasn't their policy but the FCC? I don't know what the hell is going on.
i have a 300 dollar phone that is paid for and no obligations to them and yet because my ignorant American ass go at carrier based phone I now have to wait . If I could just wax the thing or trade it at this point I would.

I was certainly ignorant. This is the cherry popper device. I had never attempted nor knew about modding at all. Lesson learned.
If you paid full price for the phone, then T-Mobile has to unlock it for you. Try to contact their T-force support on Twitter.
I have one I got from Metro by T-Mobile for $40 as a port-in deal, but they have a different unlock policy, after 6 months you can unlock it.
Oh I filed a FCC complaint and TMobile super high up ended up unlocking every TMobile phone I needed unlocked. Even my woman's phone which she just got lol

Let this be a lesson to always ALWAYS look for an unlocked variant if you intend to fully own the device without carrier lock qualms. Unfortunately buying any device direct from a carrier store will inevitably contain the fine print we so often skim through right before handing them that cash money moolah. Buy unlocked if possible, and if not then go for the carrier variant you intend to stick with. Avoid this hoedown of a waiting for the ****hawks to swoop down to free you simply because you didn't do your due diligence. I mean, you don't buy an appliance that runs on 240v only to find you won't be able to run it in the US grid and complain to the seller for selling you a locked device that you now fully own, right? There's a certain degree of basic consumer knowledge required especially for a consumer who intends to modify the device through advanced technical methods, right?

Kinda. Up until maybe three months in, none of us were really clear about carrier variants. So a lot of people did buy expecting the usual metro crap, but not the TMobile fine print.
