Can anybody tell me whats safe to remove from my SW-G925W8 S6 EDGE
I'm currently Rooted using titanium backup!:good:
please don't try and mess up my phone since i'm a noob with deleting bloatware and don't know whats safe to remove!
Here is what I have disabled so far. Couple duplicates due to over lapping screen shots.
BTW, there is a sticky in the General section:

Since you are a noob, you need to know that you alone are responsible for removing apps and borking your device, not those who attempt to answer your question. If you aren't sure what you are doing, you should start by backing up the unmolested stock ROM with a custom recovery. That way, if you bork your phone, you can get it back to stock.
You should also know that uninstalling any app that can be disabled is pointless. You may think you are gaining available memory space by doing so, but you aren't. The system apps reside in a partition the user can't access.

Is there any way to keep some of the apps that come stock on a phone (quick office, for example) if I flash a ROM. In previous experience, with CM7 among others, I found that even when running Titanium Backup and restoring "all missing apps plus data" after flashing, only the apps i downloaded were restored, not the ones that came installed on the phone. Is there any way around this? The same, I suppose goes for widgets. Silly though it may sound, I like some of the native samsung widgets, any way to get those over onto a ROM like CM7? Thanks.
I am not that experienced with android development and the like. I have flashed ROMs before on my captivate and am fairly comfortable doing that much, but beyond that I may need a idiot's guide-style explanation. Thanks.
First of all, if you decide to flash a rom, you will get the apps that the dev put in that particular rom. if you want another app, you'll have to install it yourself. if you did not specifically backup an app with TiBu, it will not restore. I have not tried the samsung widgets on CM7 but something tells me that will not work.
Secondly, you are in the wrong section for this question
my apologies about the wrong section. I presume the Q+A section would make more sense now that I think about, just figured since it had to do with ROMs and whatnot. Sorry again.
If you made a titanium backup while you were on stock, you will have all the stock applciations, including quick office. You should be able to just do a selective restore per application in that case.
If you didn't make a titanium backup while on stock, you can make a nandroid backup of your current setup in cm7, then flash stock plus root, install tibu from the market, make a full backup, install a kernel with cwm recovery, and restore your cm7 nandroid backup. Then you can selectively restore apps from titanium backup.
I have never installed cm7. I assume the directory for the apps will be the same in the cm7 directory structure. If not, it could be a problem.

sure there is....its called:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Q&A
You can extract the rom and place the apks you want to be installed in the package then zip. Would probably be easier to use tibu though.

Damn it's been there a whole week and I didn't notice.

Just wondering if it's necessary to wipe system/cache/data/dalvik before restoring a Nandroid backup. I was under the impression that the archive is an 'image' which overwrites everything, but just want to be sure.
Thanks!
Technically, no. There's no need to wipe before restoring a nandroid. Your impression is correct.
However, I've read suggestions of wiping prior to flashing images or restoring nandroid images, especially if bugs and/or issues persist. Personally, I think it's mostly voodoo mumbo-jumbo, but I admit I do it myself whenever I want a really really clean install. It only takes a few seconds. I'm still not sure I see any rational reasoning for it, but I may stand corrected.
If you're interested in understanding this kind of stuff a little more, I recommend reading the guide linked in my sig.

Moving to Q&A
Sorry for the cross post, but this message didn't seem to be getting any looks under the NOOB thread. I put it there thinking the answer would be something good for a NOOB to know, but if nobody reads that thread, it is useless...so, I am trying here in the Q&A. Since I'm new, I couldn't post the question in the DEV forum with the Mashi threads. Feel free to delete the duplicate in the NOOB thread.
I searched for this through the NOOB thread, both Mashi threads, the "To root or not root..." thread, and did a search for "reinstall apps", but couldn't find a definite answer.
The closest answer I found was someone said that I "wouldn't lose my data", but that doesn't tell me if I have to reinstall the apps to see that data, and if I have to reconfigure everything again. That is the part that scares me the most! I really REALLY don't want to have to reconfigure a couple of the apps I use. Some of my installed apps have their own backup feature, but some don't.
Maybe the answer to this will help others understand what they are getting into.
So...If I install the Mashi Root to my Note, that already has my apps installed/setup/configured, will I lose any of that?
I'm wanting to root, so that I can install my backup software, but it is a shame that my backup software is useless to me until I get a root done.
Thanks!

Rooting your phone will not erase your data or apps. Flashing ROM's will and you'll want to buy Titanium Backup Pro to back up your apps and data before doing that. But rooting is safe and you won't lose anything.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted someone to verify that info for me. I do already have a paid copy of Titanium Backup Pro on my HP Touchpad, and really wanted to use it on my Note. Just wasn't sure if this type of rooting did anything different than what I am used to doing with on my Touchpad.
Later!
UPDATE: I just did the Mashi root, and everything is still there just like droidal said it would. No problems with the root, and I have verified that my apps that can use SU are actually using it just fine. I just followed the directions carefully, and had it completed in less than 15 minutes. Hopefully, this info will help anyone that is thinking about doing this, and wondering what happens to their existing data.
Thanks again!
Thanks for the answer Droidal and thanks also to MonkeyThumper for the follow-up. Great thread, in spite of it's briefness.
Hi guys,
i'm still very new to this whole Android world and learning each day so please help me understand this problem i'm having. My phone is i9305 (EU model) just for reference.
First off i would like to know if this is possible to do without rooting or hacking since i like to be able to do OTA update and not mess to much with the phone if possible. If this is not possible then i could root. I actually tested rooting using the CF-Auto-root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
So What i like to know is how can i backup and restore my phone is the same shape as it is today. I know that i cant back-up my private data without rooting and for now lets say i dont care about that part. What i like is to be able to backup all
- the applications
- my folders and how i can organized everything
- my desktop and how i have organized everything
- everything else like my background and other system settings.
I tried one to do a system restore+clear cache and my phone was reseted as my day one. When i connected to my google account it started downloading all my applications but sadly everything was just dumped in the application window without my previous structure so google dont save any settings. I did get my background and contact/calendar info back which was good.
So does anyone know how one can make a type of backup/restore i'm after?
I tested titanium backup and my Backup (when i had rooted) but didnt see an option for the mentioned features.
ps. Since i used iPhone i'm a bit spoiled, itunes does a great job doing a proper backup with the whole application/user data when making backup and the restore does restore everything like all your settings, background, folders where you organized the applications so i'm looking for something similar in Android. I had expected Kies to do this but it only saves basic stuff which seems to be the same as Google saves in the cloud (like contacts and such)
Grateful for any tips in this regard.
search, all the info is out there for you to read.
you'll need a custom recovery

Thanks i think with your keyword i mange to search for something meaningful

It seems the CWM is the way to go. Seems like a very powerful tools. One thing i still dont know is if it back up the whole OS or just the application/data ?
For instance if i do a backup when i'm on build AB and then install AC and clean my system and do a restore what do i end up with?
AC + all my applications and settings?
or
AB + all my applications and settings?
just search for the definition of nandroid backup, don't expect spoonfeeding

If you know the answer why not just say it? This type if attitude isn't really helping me (or others as i seen you do the same on other threads). I will search more on it still but please remember why we are in this section and forum in the first place. If i knew what to look for i wouldnt ask. I have searched on the topic it but with thousands of threads its pretty much impossible to get a clear understanding of things and as mentioned i'm not that familiar with Android world.
it might be hard to imagine for you but not everyone are familiar with the rooting and hacking world and all the abbreviations and much of what is discussed is hard to follow for beginners like me.
Atleast if you want to be helpful provide a link or something

Install a custom recovery like clock work mod to do a full back up (nandroid backup). Download Rom manager to install the recovery (must be rooted)
Back up EFS what you can find an app to do.
Use Titanium backup to back up Apps and data.
If you want to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Ashley covered it all. Breakdown:
To back up your ROM you need a custom recovery installed. Boot into it and select backup. This backs up absolutely everything at that moment in time.
-Your ROM settings, apps including data and settings, messages received.
However you can't transfer your app data between ROMs because it's part of an entire image. So you use Titanium to back up (for apps+app data) which can be used all over the place.
You'll want this if you ever switch back to an old ROM as when you restore that ROM you can restore your Titanium to update the app data associated to that ROM.
You can back up your launcher layout if it's third party as it's an app. Touch wiz launcher I don't think so.
Exynos SIII; CM10.1
Don't use rom manager for CWM.. I've seen it brick more phones than anything.
well, I told you want to search for. check the first rule of xda
the easiest i would say would Titanium backup pro. phone needs to be rooted. you sync to dropbox and other clouds.
i always have two back ups one is Titanium and the other is twrp
@Ashley1987, 23Six, xSpeced,Farooq_Chicago
Thank you for your valuable input. I think the conclusion is that titanium backup pro is the best way to go since i want to be able to use different ROMs. And nandroid backup if i want to restore on the same ROM. I actually have bought titanium backup pro so i will "play" with that once i root my phone again (not a big fan of rooting and stuff since i can use OTA update but it seems like the only option).
do you know if i actually get back everything as i have today (including folder structure on desktop and application menu) ?
I spend lots of time on doing this so its good to know before i try to wipe my phone and try
@Glebun, i think someone else need to read the rules as well! if i had to guess i would say you just post to get a high number of post under your name. You dont contribute to the discussion and are somewhat hostile in your posts. This attitude isnt helpful and is not appreciated by anyone. So if you cant help i suggest you simply dont post. And i repeat what i said earlier that i had investigated but when you are new sometimes you need someone to push you in the right direction and advice you which is the point of this forum and section. As you see there are many people who helped me and i appreciate that. You on the other hand just complain and wasted yours and my time on nothing useful. Please think twice before posting next time.
*I am not sure where to post this since it is not device specific. . . and just a general question*
Thanks for a member I have a reply about how to root my MB525 - Defy!!!
That seems simple enough. Now I am left with a couple of questions before I root and look at flashing a new ROM onto my phone:
1. Can you or someone tell me if rooting will erase photos, texts, and/or apps?
2. And same question for flashing a new ROM. Will that, by nature, overwrite and erase photos, texts, and/or apps?
With my Defy, I can't see how I would back anything up or keep it safe for me to transfer back to my phone if a new ROM deletes everything.
It seems as though there are lots of good things about rooting into a higher version of Android, and I am trying to figure out what is the most current or best for my Defy to handle, but I really want to figure out how/if I can finally view silly emojis in my texts! :cyclops:
Thanks in advance for your time and reply,
Kristie
