I've had my vibrant since it came out. They have 512 of ram hardware. I know we've gotten up to 344 or so with tweaking, but why can't we get the full 512 at all?
I have a feeling it has to do with Samsung or drivers, but with everything I've seen devs overcome I can't see why this is still a problem.
I have a nook color which has inferior hardware overall, but the biggest reason I see it as more stable is it never has memory management issues(running any rom). My biggest reasons to dump my vibrant for a Hercules or comparable is because of the constant ram issues the vibrant has that they wont, along with better hardware.
Maybe the answer is out there, but I haven't seen it in a whole year(so answers could be outdated), nor it brought up for a very long time.

That 512 MB is shared ram. So some of it is dedicated to the video processor which is built into CPU. Phones have to be slim and light I don't think well be seeing dedicated videocards and soundcards anytime soon.

The simple answer is that our system needs to set aside a certain amount of ram for the actual OS to use, nothing that we can necessarily touch. Certain apps occupy memory at all times and we're left with whatever memory hasn't been allocated by OS. I'm not the most technical but that's the general consensus from what I've read over the last 2 years of running Android.
If you want to really push the limits of what free ram you can achieve, I would highly suggest reading the OP of this thread. In there you'll see how you can adjust the way your system handles recently opened and closed apps. My phone feels a million times better, just using those simple to use tweaks/scripts.
Let me know if you need any help.

I know the nook has no dedicated gpu, but it makes use of most if not all of that ram.. unless I am playing a graphically intensive game, it rarely drops below 100mb available ram, usually staying around 150+ until I've opened a ton of apps. Oh, and many phones that are coming out have a dedicated gpu, such as all of the variants of the samsung galaxy S II. it has a Dual-core 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 proccessor, Mali-400MP GPU, Exynos chipset.. and awesome battery life I have heard.
Either way, my nook color doesn't experience the laggyness that my vibrant does until I have used so much it makes sense, but considering my vibrant stays around 60mb of available ram +/- most of the time..

You have no idea how hard I have been trying to find that app, I was going to try it when I was running simply honeyv5 because the memory issues were so horrible, but I couldn't find it again, and minfreemanager was the next best thing.. so I am VERY glad you posted it.
Are you using a specific set of pre-made settings, a specific script, or some custom setup, and which?
I am just trying to get my vibrant as usable as possible until the hercules and other comparable phones come out, so I can weigh them against each other. I don't regret my vibrant, but I wish I had waited a little longer so I had made a more informed choice.. if I can make it kickass again, at least for a few months, I will be a happy guy. Thanks again.

No problem man. I'm actually using option #9 in V8 right now and it's been a dream. It stops holding apps in memory after not using them a few seconds, which is great for what I'm looking for. What you'll find is that it manages the memory and how quickly things are slotted around (different priorities that android gives particular applications; Launcher, Dialer, Messaging, etc.). You can actually try every option and see which you find the best.
I started out with option #2 and then moved all the way down as I found things I didn't like in some, but liked in others.Give it a shot man!

I'm actually using number 2 now in the allandroidv8 script, and if anything maybe it is too aggressive, but it has it's snappiness back. Looking at how they set the rom I'm using and the one before it, it looks like they didn't tweak it at all from stock cm7.. if anything I think they've made tweaks it more recent nightlies better than those roms! Simply honey(who brags about how great they are) and Biff ron both need some tweaking.. I'm gonna play with it, but thanks for posting what I was trying so hard to find

I picked up 2 Flyers recently from Cowboom and one of the first things I did was root and flash a custom rom. After setting everything up how I wanted it, I have come to find that the Flyer is sluggish in a lot of things, like scrolling around, switching apps, opening new apps, etc.
I understand that it's a single core processor but is this normal? I am running the latest LeeDroid rom.
Thanks
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Not it's not normal. It may be single core, but it's much faster than most single cores. It's fairly comparable to dual cores, and you can flash an overclocked kernel. Mine isn't sluggish.

Hmmm any recommendations on kernels? I flashed LeeDroid's kernel but haven't tweaked. Should I?
Opening the app drawer is obviously skipping frames, zoom in/zoom out too.. as well as browser scrolling.. extremely lagged.
Overclocking won't fix that. I don't know what you have loaded. Some people put 2000 animated widgets and 200 apps on a tablet, then say,"its laggy". Guarantee there ain't a device on the planet that won't bog down under that. If you are using it in a sensible manner it should be very snappy. The home screens and most of the GUI is rendered by the GPU so overclocking will do very little for you since the GPU doesn't overclock. That's also one of the big reasons that dual core devices don't perform any better. Try removing a bunch of apps and widgets and see how it behaves. If that doesn't work, Id try a different ROM.
Download Advanced task manager
Here is the Link :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.taskmanager&hl=en
It shows the RAM u got free. When i kill all my apps, i get about 400+ RAM free and then it runs very smooth. It becomes sluggish when you hit the lower 300's. So just kill unecessary apps and you won't have a problem. I supposed you could go back to Gingerbread (it uses less resources) or try a different honeycomb ROM like CoolHoney 3D. If you REALLY want smoothness and can live without the Pen and Camera, you should try the ICS ROMS. They still in developement, but most are functional and very very smooth.

The Flyer is sluggish. I have an Acer Iconia A100 also and it is much more responsive. I think that the culprit is Honeycomb and Sense combined.
Flyer running on the ICS ports is much, much more responsive but those ports cannot be used as daily drivers, IMO, at least for me.
For this reason, I hope either that the ports progress or that we somehow get AOSP ICS.
Honeycomb is garbage and Honeycomb with Sense slows things to a crawl.

I am on LeeDroid with sense stripped.. I'm pretty sure there are still components there, but coming from Samsung products I am not sure how involved Sense is compared to TouchWiz (Samsung's crap).
It's not that the tablet is slow, it is like it just has trouble keeping up sometimes. It's very hit or miss. I guess it's expected from a $150 tablet.
Seems to be personal opinion and maybe experience. I run the stock HC rooted and have no lag , no slow downs, no problems. Other complains of these. I had and sold my Acer A100 because i hated the screen on it. Found the Acer to be slower in almost everything compared to the Flyer. So your mileage may very.

The Flyer is fine for apps. It is the user interface that lags. This is very obvious when compared to the A100, especially now that the A100 has ICS. And, yes, the screen on the A100 is horrible (as is the build quality overall).
Well some people say this and I believe them, but its certainly not universal, and its certainly not obvious on my HC Flyer. I see no lag. Its very smooth and quick. I never had ICS on the A100, but the Flyer was clearly faster for most apps, as it should be with a faster base processor speed.
I'm going to try a different launcher and see if that helps. Are there any recommended HC launchers?

ADW EX works well, I use it for a pretty display when I do not need anything that Sense provides. There are several others.
Any launcher close to stock honeycomb that doesn't add an extra notification bar? Or atleast replaces it?

The HC notification bar is part of the system, not part of the launcher. You cannot safely eliminate it or replace it. There are some hack apps that hide it, but they can cause compatibility problems.

I believe you may be talking about the extra bar on top that many nonnative apps and launchers add to 7inch hc tablets. Unfortunately you'll just have to look around. I use xeam which allows icons up to the screen edges.
About laggyness: I experienced a huge amount of lag after some rom installs. This shouldn't be the case but leedros rom was very slow even after a couple months usage. I use the senseless hc rom now and its noticeably faster.
If you want to see blazing speed, downgrade and install the CM7 1.1 rom. I would switch in a heartbeat if pen worked properly.
Yeah I use the pen for work so I can't go to GB/CM/ICS, unfortunately
Are there any tablet-oriented UIs out? I do see that new one Chameleon but that's not out yet.. all of the launchers I'm finding are just larger phone launchers, like Go Launcher EX HD, ADW EX, etc.
I thought it was fast until I played with my bothers ipad and my dads playbook. Really smooth scrolling web pages and stuff compared to mine.
The best I managed to do was use setcpu to set the minimum cpu freq to like 800MHz, which helped.

Tell your father to throw anything blackberry related out of the house . Anyway, just install a custom ROM. DeSensified v3 and CoolHoney 3d V4 are the best two i tried so far, if you kill all running apps, you have about 400+ RAM free and only ocasional lag, but not on the UI. Keep in mind that honeycomb uses alot more resources than others and HTC just threw it together in a few min.

You can try VTL Launcher, it's not developed anymore afaik but works fine except for some occasional bugs. It's pretty much what I would want from a homescreen, very customizable, uses ADW icon sets and gives you the whole screen without any wasted space.
Not sure if this is just me or everyone, but I noticed that when after flashing a rom and starting blank and fresh with no apps installed and with the HTC Sense pages at default with the preloaded widgets. At this point the whole phone is fast and very snappy and very smooth when swiping between different home screens. Even if you rotate the phone to landscape the phone rotates very fast.
BUT
As soon as I start installing my games and apps from the Play store, the whole phone just doesnt become snappy anymore. With 1GB Ram and Dual Core 1.5 GHz S4 CPU shouldnt the phone stay snappy no matter how many apps you have installed? This seems to be the case for every Sense phone.
It seems like the slow down comes when I start opening a couple apps and customizing the home screens. I tried down grading to 5 screens instead of 7 with a couple widgets such as the weather clock and I have my apps grouped into folders ect. At this point swiping between screens is a little jerky but if I keep swiping it goes back to being smooth.
My previous phones Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2 didnt have this problem. I could have all 7 pages maxed out with widgets and apps filling up each page and the phone would remain snappy with no lag.
I never been a fan of the Snap Dragon CPU. I had better experience with Exynos.

EXACTLY!
Yeah, im aware that I can switch to Nova launcher ect, but if that was the case, I would have kept my Galaxy Nexus. I want to beable to use the nice fancy Sense Widgets but the phone shouldnt have to slow down like it does.
I found this to happen on each rom I been on and I tried just about each of them in the Dev section. I havnt tried %100 stock because, soon as I got the phone I rooted and used a custom rom so im not sure if pure stock has this problem.
Maybe a Dev can chime in with a solution.
I can agree to an extent..no matter what though, this phone will always be faster than a galaxy nexus. (Don't know bout jellybean). That thing stuttered like a mofo when I was testin it.
Anyways, the phone tends to slow down and speed up at will. Could be a combination of cache or resources that sense needs in order for it to run that bogs memory. (Like adding different widgets, apps, etc) Sense just isn't well made like the pure android experience imo. It needs more fluidity within the system to run smoother and this is probably why you experience lag every now and then. Overall, I'm satisfied. It doesn't slow down too much. Still feels like a superior device even with its flaws (sense UI)

Have you made sure your app/games are installed on your phone storage? I noticed a lot of app tend to use the internal storage.
Internal storage: 2Gb
Phone storage: 10Gb
I'm all stock and don't have any lag!
i noticed that too. my phone seems to be getting slower and slower. my gf's galaxy nexus with jellybean is much faster and smoother than my phone. i can't wait for cm10.
its not your phone, rom or sense. it's the play store. it happens on stock or rooted. even does it on my wife's 3D(stock unrooted). I blame it on when the play store changed over to the format it uses, now. even noticed it on her epic touch before I gave her my 3D. just my opinion I know. otherwise I have no lag.

I'm not sure what it is. All I know my Galaxy Nexus never slowed down with AOKP and CM and my Epic Touch was also always smooth. Can't say that about this phone. The camera is nice and screen is nice but can't say that about this Snap Dragon so far.
Well this damn phone flies with Nova Launcher..HTC should be ashamed of them selves for still continuing to have sense be as slow as it is.
And I'm afraid even project butter in jelly bean won't help because HTC will find a way to slow things down
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I have absolutely no speed decrease what so ever. Stock or Custom Rom. Try uninstalling aps that you don't need system or data. Try locking sense into memory threw bp. That will definitely help IMO. Also how you set your phone up will always play a major role in performance. If anyone wants to know how I run mine to compare to there setup just hit me with a pm. I have over 40 apps installed and I have no lag in anything I do. This phone is a Monster lol. I've had the hero,evo4g,evo3d, and none of them can match the performance of this phone. Just my opinion.

I always end up with a bootloop after flashing. The instructions are flawed. Or, one or more files are corrupted.

Yeah I read a post saying to do what you just described with success.
However, this phone is really poor. I have tried GB, ICS, JB and all of them I get similar performance just different features.
The phone can't handle two apps at once regardless of the rom.
I was traveling to a different city to get something on Craigs. It constantly would shutdown my Maps and Navigation when I wanted to read a Kik message.
If I have Kik open and want to read a txt msg, it takes like 10 seconds after clicking the txt msg icon to show the txt.
Is there an app or method that everyone uses on this phone that I don't know about to get this phone to run speedy? Or, is it just so outdated it can't run modern versions of apps?
I just want navigation, txt, kik, and a light browser like dolphin.
Can a Fascinate handle all that and be snappy and quick??
In the mean time, I am switching over to my S3, though I don't like how it's so big I can't reach all the screen with one hand.

i think you should understand that this phone has a single-core CPU. running at 1GHz. this phone is almost 4 years old. it's amazing this thing can even run things like Kitkat at all, let alone with the relative finesse the most recent unjust build provides.
it took me a while to realize that apps these days are not optimized for single-core CPUs, it took upgrading to a gs4 to realize that. the fascinate is an admittedly, well, slow phone. or its not meant for multitasking, definitely.
the s3 runs circles around this phone. almost anything does. i've never really found anything that allows for the multitasking and insane speed that i get out of my s4, the closest i've ever gotten was cm7, but that even in its stable release had tons of SOD problems (sleep of death, phone locks and never comes back on).
part of the issue is that the fascinate has 512MB of RAM. back in 2010, it was adequate. not even good, just.. alright. these days the norm is 2GB. a phone with 1GB of RAM is considered outdated. despite google's efforts to optimize kitkat for 512MB devices, this phone's GPU shares RAM with the system, and depending on the configuration, usually 100+ MB is reserved for the GPU, leaving typically about 360-384MB of RAM. You can get more (the kitkat ROM i've mentioned allows 416MB of RAM to the system) but things will start breaking, particularly HD video recording and torch, among other things

part of the issue is that the fascinate has 512MB of RAM. back in 2010, it was adequate. not even good, just.. alright. these days the norm is 2GB. a phone with 1GB of RAM is considered outdated. despite google's efforts to optimize kitkat for 512MB devices, this phone's GPU shares RAM with the system, and depending on the configuration, usually 100+ MB is reserved for the GPU, leaving typically about 360-384MB of RAM. You can get more (the kitkat ROM i've mentioned allows 416MB of RAM to the system) but things will start breaking, particularly HD video recording and torch, among other things

I have not used the kik so I can't really say about it's performance,,, I have seen on the 4.4 kitkat rom from Unjust when I have used google maps navigation it was a huge battery sucker, no matter if I only put it on device [gps] only. I could barely even use it and on a charge it was still draining it faster than it could take it.
i did not have this on jellybean roms
I have not had the the problems you describe '10 seconds to open an app'.
Hangouts used to be slow opening initially but their latest update has made it much faster
I don't think it's multitasking is bad for what it is as a phone given it's specs,,, but everyone use a phone differently,,,
so I mostly agree with the overall jest of what skept is saying,,, it is ultimately limited by the 512MB ram available to use.
for GB and JB roms you can also look at the V6 Supercharger thread, it does help with multi-tasking, it can be a bit hard to understand how to implement it but once you figure that out it goes decent, boot up and time till initial use are much longer than normal, but you just have to plan your reboots for when plenty of time allows
i think jellybean roms are very good performers and given the face that you can use a different kernel that allows for overclocking up 1400 Mhz if desired,,, it's a give and take though,,,, over 1200Mhz and battery life goes south very quickly. [luckily the battery doesn't take long to charge, usually 1 hour,,, and even 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there will really help it last through the day]
Most of the earlier jellybean [4.1.x] versions seemed to give better battery life from what I remember than the newer [4.2.x] ones
and there are a lot of different ones to choose from to suite your style or needs from basic cm to full customization.
most of them were stable enough to be daily drivers,,, the big thing is you will just have to read up on a particular one or just break down and try some to see if they fit what you want.
With all that said though the fascinate will never perform like an S3, S4, Nexus, Nexus 4, Moto G, Moto X
I would consider checking out the Motorola Moto G, it's physical dimensions are nearly she same as the fassy but a hugely better phone, screen size, etc and depending on your phone carrier needs it can be had for as little as $65 bucks...
Well lg optimus l3 is very powerful and performant in fact of multitasking if you're a dev or not a complete noob.My phone can go until 1.2 ghz without probs and its factory clock speed was 800 mhz. Most apps aren't optimized for multi-cores and l3 is single core.384 mb of ram are enough on stock and 301 mb aren't enough on cm.But my kernels got swap.
Battery is very good:10days in stand by,2 days in normal use.
Antutu sucks but i don't believe in it.
So its up to the devs,we're good devs and there are more than 100000 l3s in the world. Now we're getting dualboot. Its all about devs, its all about devs.
Sent from my LG-E400 using XDA Free mobile app
Is it just me, or does the phone use a lot of RAM? Mine seems to be using 2.7GB minimum at all times. Seems high.
Higher would be more ideal. The Windows mindset of "I'm running out of RAM!" doesn't get you anywhere here; in Android, empty RAM is wasted RAM. My Droid Turbo averages ~1.8gb used of 3gb. Seems Nougat tries to average 60%-70% usage.
When you switch out of an app, it's moved to the background and (usually) suspended, but kept in memory so you can switch back to it quickly. It's things like this that take up memory you think should be "free".
In the event that you need to load up a big app, stuff running in the background is quickly and gracefully unloaded.
Unless you're getting constant foreground app crashes - which might indicate that something is forcefully keeping itself loaded and starving everything else of needed memory - you shouldn't worry about it. Android is fairly good at handling memory these days.

I notice this issue more on custom ROMs than stock firmware. On mine and my wife's Quarks (3GB RAM, as you well know), running Marshmallow and Lollipop versions of the same ROM, something causes the phones to just freeze up for about a minute, crashes, then RAM is released to use. It was happening at least once a day on my phone, then my wife said it was happening to her phone. (Our old phones, not the new LG V30 phones.) I've messed with the LMK settings, trying different combinations, to no avail. And I did report it in the Nougat ROM thread for that phone. (Marshmallow ROM thread no longer has support.)
So, while I totally agree with your answer, it is the technically correct answer, I do understand the OP's concern. I've gotten to the point where I like to see more free RAM, so I know my phone isn't about to freeze up. At least on my old phone.
I love custom ROMs, but the past couple of weeks it's been nice to run stock on my new LG V30 and have a very fluid experience. I've not disabled anything. I saw some others disable stuff and then got lagging. I've not touched a thing and my phone is very smooth.
Could a "theme" downloaded from play store take up a lot of RAM and/or slow things down, too?
This is my first experience with a theme.

Possibly, but probably not. From what I've seen, LG themes seem to skin far less than say, substratum does, and even substratum is pretty lightweight unless you get into transparent themes.
Keep in mind the default theme is itself...well, a theme. You're not really saving anything by staying on it. If you see a skin you like, use it, if you're really worried use one of the LG-provided ones that come with the phone.

Interesting. It does seem like stock ROMs tend to be more conservative with RAM usage, whereas custom ROMs will have less aggressive minfree settings in order to keep more stuff loaded up. "Unused RAM is wasted RAM", but only up to a certain point; in my experience (Maserati with its ancient kernel as well as Quark) approaching ~100mb of free memory in LP/MM/N can bring things to a crawl, and pushing it can cause a kernel panic :good:
The only issue I've seen in Quark RR has been with the Pixiv app, though, and it does exactly what you said. But...I'm fairly certain the app itself leaks memory, as it only happens after browsing a while and is perfectly fine for another stretch after it OOMs and restarts.
My experience with stock ROMs in the past - Quark included - has been "smooth but lacking in features/customization" --- I've never really understood the complaints that stock is slow and claims that custom is blazing fast in comparison. The OEM has a decided advantage in that they have all the tools they need to compile the ROM properly, with then-current driver and kernel sources and a deep understanding of the hardware...I'd be really surprised to find a stock ROM from the last few years to be slower than custom.
But to be honest, my sample size is pretty small. *shrugs* I stick by what I've said, though, if anything the V30 doesn't use its memory enough; some people have complained about apps popping out of memory sooner than expected. LG is still putting out updates too, if a memory-management problem is found, hopefully they'll get right on fixing it.
