I have seen various Galaxy S2's in and around my area. I've noticed that the motherboard comes in 2 different colors, one Blue, and the other, Forest Green.
interestingly, i've observed that the green color tends to heat up pretty quickly compared to the blue. I was wondering if there would be any differences between the two boards. When the Galaxy S2 first arrived to market, the color was blue when I checked at a retailer. A couple months later, when inquiring the price, one of the store employees opened the back cover and showed me the color. It was Forest Green. After playing around a bit with the phone, the phone became considerably hot, something that was not encountered with the earlier phone I saw in May. I'm doubting the color has anything to do with hardware revisions, but this sparked some curiosity.
Question: Is your motherboard "Blue" or "Green" ?
How to locate color-
- remove back cover
- remove SIM
- color is there

Got a blue motherboard. I got the phone on release. It still can heat up a lot. Don't know if its a lot more than the green one, since I haven't felt one.
Mine's are green.it heats up alot.there are 1 time where my phone temp went up to 60 degree celcius.its freakin hot.

Blue motherboard.
Mine is blue ..heat has never been a problem ...Even with the SGP Case on .
Interesting little thread .....
Green very early release on day one of sale .No heat issues .

Interesting responses, keep this thread going. I've seen one with green and phone get very hot on normal use. I've had no problems with my phone, other than that the fact that there is some yellow color on bottom left, looks like a software bug.
Based on the responses, the heating may have to do with the way things are soldered onto the board. i don't know about differences, but green used to be used on prototype devices, and blue was official. really weird. doubt the colors have anything to do with revision.

why do i am i able to see a tiny part of the motherboard in the headphone jack. is this normal?
I had a Green one in the original Rogers i727R, never had a problem until one day the phone died when in Recovery mode when I was installing new ROM.
Tow sources determined mainboard needs replacement, wow after a guy from Samsung lab that does work on a side, put in a new one it is "Blue" now and works great.
I am guessing the new boards are blue.
Hi all,
I had to replace the power button flex board of my i9100, but I made a mistake when soldering, and something shorted and a SMD in the board exploded with a *BANG* and went flying like a bright shooting star. Then came the smell of fried electronics, oh boy, that was horrible! Strangely, I couldn't locate which SMD component exploded, the boards looks fine, even if carefully examined with a 10x magnifier.
I thought the board was completely destroyed. But I fixed the power flex cable soldering, assembled the phone, connected it to the USB charger, and guess what?? The recovery menu appeared, some message appeared and quickly disappeared, and the phone booted normally! Everythting worked: network, wifi, bluetooth, camera, etc. However, the power button didn't work anymore, even now it's properly soldered.
I removed the battery to turn off the phone, but now it doesn't turn on with the button. If I plug it to USB, now it shows the charging battery screen, animated and all, but I can't turn on the phone anymore!
So I ask: does anyone know which SMD components take part in turning the phone on by pressing the power button? I can't find this info in the service manual, but I'm sure it's just a matter of replacing a burnt SMD resistor, capacitor or inductor, since the phone works, I saw it working!
So, does anyone have any info for me, or at least a detailed diagram of the circuitry, so I can find my way into that?
Thank you all in advance!!!

Hola Eduardo,
you probably used a too high temperature in the soldering iron.
Google for "56542824-Samsung-GT-i9100-service-manual.pdf" and you will find a good service manual that will guide you on a series of problem.
I doubt that there's a procedure for your specific problem, but you may be able to know what SMD you have to replace.
I wish you luck, and next time make sure that the temperature is low (and eventually use a solder paste!)

Thanks for your reply, robdpi!
The soldering iron temperature was ok, I used a 12W Weller micro soldering iron, temperature was not more than 550F / 300C, and I never leave the iron on the work for more than 3 continuous seconds. The problem was a short between two of the 3 pins in the connector. I noticed it only after the accident occurred, testing with my multimeter.
About the service manual, this is the one I have, and the testing procedures (voltages, frequencies) are all OK when plugged to the USB, but they all fail when I try to turn it on with the power button. And you're right, there's no procedure in the manual regarding this specific problem.
Anyway, I will keep trying, thanks again,
Eduardo
Well, after almost an year, I fixed the phone! I'll write about the solution here, to serve as a reference to anyone who needs help.
I managed to find the electrical schematics of the whole phone. With the information given in it, I noticed the connection between the positive battery pin and the flex power button connector was interrupted. Probably the short circuit I did overheated and blew some thin trace on the PCB and it kind of exploded. So I soldered a thin wire between the battery connector and the power button to replace the lost connection, and the phone is now working again! If anyone needs the schematics, just PM me and I will send it over.
But now, I'm back to another issue the phone already had, even before I did the short circuit: the screen shows horizontal lines, blurring the image. It started after I replaced a cracked screen. Does anyone have any idea if it's software or hardware related? May it be a driver issue? I'm from Brazil, and the screen came from Korea (bought at eBay). Should a korean screen work in my phone? Is it possible to confirm or not if it's hardware or software related?
Any help will be great, thanks in advance!

I attached 8 pictures showing how the thing looks like. Please note the banding can't be seen on black background, and it's only horizontal. I used red arrows to show the banding. Vertical and curve artifacts are distortions caused by the camera.
If you pay attention to the file names (which have the time each picture was taken) it's possible to see how the thing gets worse with time. In the last pictures, screen goes completely unreadable, it degrades to an almost uniform bluish white.
I already tried flashing a custom kernel as suggested on another thread, but it didn't help. Already tried stock 4.0.4, that didn't work also.
Thanks a lot for any help.

You mean you tried the screen on two motherboards, and it shows the same problem on both? Could you please tell the country of origin of your motherboards and screen? I suspect it may be a hardware incompatibility issue.
In other words: motherboards sold in country X may not "talk" correctly to screens from country Y. My i9100 is from Brazil, but the screen came from a Korean seller at eBay.
By the way, does anyone know if the official firmwares come with low level hardware drivers? Is it possible to "transplant" the video driver from an asian firmware, to a south america firmware, for example?
I know about android phones which changed the wi-fi chip during their life cicle and this transplant used to be made, and worked. I would like to try the same for video.
Thanks!

I have only one battery, so can't swap to test. But could you explain how could the battery cause this problem?
I just measured the battery voltage with a digital multimeter, and it's 4.15 V, fully charged. This is almost a half volt above the 3.7 V it should be. Do you think this may be the cause for all the problem?
Many tthanks!
Yeah, screen might not getting enough juice.

I did another test: measured the battery voltage with the phone turned on, to check the voltage drop caused by phone load, but it seemed normal. With phone on, battery measured 3.8V approximately, which is a little less than the 4.15V I got without load. The battery indicator shows 75% battery charge. It looks like the battery is behaving well under load.
Anyway, I will try another battery as soon as I can.
Thanks again,
Eduardo
Well, I did test with another battery and the problem persists. Should I give up and consider it's really a screen hardware problem?
Thanks,
Eduardo
My guess was on the battery, I guess I'll take the screen problem then.
You should have it checked it out with a tech guy.

Well, I think I went as far as I could. I replaced all 20 tiny SMD components from the display flex PCB with the ones from the old display, which cracked.
But it didn't work, the problem remains. Now I think the problem lies in the AMOLED screen itself, or perhaps in the main phone board. Who knows if the main board is sending dirty electrical signals to the display?
Anyway, I think I will just sell the phone the way it is, I can't afford spending even more money on this phone.
Thanks for the help, gastonw!
You got it Eduardo.

No rom/kernel package will be able to get around this hardware issue. You'll either have to make do with what you have or simply buy an i777 battery. They're really cheap ($5 or so), check in the Accessories forum for more info.
The $5 batteries are all fake, and are exactly the same as i9100 fake batteries. They don't have NFC.
i9100 battery is a fit and if you have a normal one - it should work without bootloops.
My phone has lived with i9100 battery for a couple of months.

You are right, the cheap battery are all fakes and don't work but anyway, the problem is that I'm from Argentina and because of new government rules related to importations, I cannot buy a i777 from outside and in my country is imposible to find them.
What do you mean by a normal one? I tried an original i9100 on my i777 and I got the loops .
The reason of this post is because long time ago I read, don't remember where, that with some roms the i9100 battery worked ok so I though that maybe something could be shut off o done in the roms/kernels to disable the NFC. I google a lot but I couldn't find anything and unfortunately I don't have much time to go around testing every single rom. :crying:
Sooo any help would be much appreciated.
Just in case, I'm using SHOstock3 rom, I cannot ask in his thread due to my "new" status but If anyone can ask him, maybe he can find a way to change something in the room to avoid the loops.
thanks!!!!
The cheap batteries are not all fake, I'm using one as well as others. It's true NFC capabilities are lost, but who cares: NFC barely worked for this device in the first place.

Define "fake".
For me, "fake" is when it says "SAMSUNG" on the battery, while it's not produced by Samsung, when it says "NFC" on the battery, but there's no NFC chip inside it, and when it states battery capacity, and the battery capacity isn't even 1/2 of the stated.
By all these criteria, the cheap batteries are fake. They don't have NFC chip, they're not produced by Samsung, they're not even the same batteries - you can read on Skyrocket forums, I've dismantled a true Samsung battery vs fake one and compared, it's easy to spot the fake by touch - the real battery fills all the possible space it has, the fake battery has a plastic holder around a smaller battery that's made to look and fit larger space. Of course, physically smaller battery also means - crappy capacity, nowhere near the "official" claim.
If you prefer other terms, like "counterfeit" - I don't mind the term as long as it stresses the right thing: these batteries aren't built by Samsung, aren't built by anyone that builds for Samsung, aren't of any "official" descent and are crappy (which makes their "SAMSUNG" sticker fake, by the way), so anyone who expects them to match the original battery is heading for a big disappointment. And I used 2 of those too, until I got annoyed enough that my wife's phone can't live till the end of the day, found and bought $30 original Samsung battery. Night and day difference. And the original battery is still alive till today.

I'm not sure of the reason for bootloops, but I'm quite sure it isn't NFC - because the fake cheap batteries don't have NFC either. The additional contact on the battery board is connected to nothing.
I always ran stock-derived ROMs on the phone (SHOStock mostly, but at some point - some other ROM I've ported from i9100), never had a problem running i9100 battery, both true and fake one.
If you can look at the logcat and pinpoint the failure that sends you into a bootloop - it might help.

No problem, how can I look at the logcat?
Here, a dismantled fake battery with marking, suggesting that it's the same fake model that is used for i9100. I've examined it under a microscope to make sure, and even on the photo one can almost see it - the leftmost contact has a board lead left with vias, the middle board contacts have vias, the rightmost contact - the one for "NFC" - has neither vias nor board lead, it's just there for show, connected nowhere.
For logcat, just search the web. You need to enable ADB and have drivers in the PC, apps are not good - because you need log from the boot time. One guide, for example:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1726238
There are many more. Search "how to use adb logcat".

This is the one I'm using - 100% counterfeit but works fine. Does not support NFC but have never had any problems with it. It's cheap for a reason, as it's most definitely not 2200mAh (pretty much stock 1650mAh, or close to it), but it functions well enough for me.
@SteveMurphy
I just looked at the one you are using on ebay, it does not say anything about the battery cover for this 2200mAh. Does it same size as original that does not require new battery cover?
Thanks.

I work for a Verizon Premium Retailer and one of our display model S4's rebooted and now will boot to the screen that shows the battery charging when the phone is off, then it reboots after about 5 seconds. Hearing the phone vibrate every 5-10 seconds was getting extremely irritating so I ripped the phone off display and used Odin to do a FULL WIPE mk2 flash with the pit file. Phone STILL will not attempt to power on unless it is connected to a charging source, will not boot into recovery, and will only go the download mode. It continues to reboot constantly when plugged in as well.
I had the same problem with an s3 at a premium retailer I used to work for. I wouldn't blame the phone just yet although a full Odin flash should work is it marked as display only or a customer model just being used as a display.
Also don't mess with the display units! Where I worked I attempted to fix the s3 previously mentioned but a previous coworker had the anti theft clamps torqued to tight so I went get the tool to loosen it, set the phone down. Came back entire screen is cracked and they blamed it on me. So word of caution friend don't mess with display units unless you absolutely know what to do. But I'm sure you already knew that

Haha well our phone antitheft mechanism is a joke. It's only attached to the battery door and I just took that off and brought the phone in the back with me lol. But yea the phone does absolutely nothing responsive. On a side note did you enjoy working there? Only ask because the one I work at goes above and beyond how terrible I thought a business could be run. lol
maybe
A friend of mine just had a problem similar and he could only get into dwld mode, so he did just that and downloaded a update, or a new version and the phone did a update to the version he dwnlded and it was up and running perfectly... I have a problem, in the thread above, if anyone wants to weigh in... Im lost for words. Ready to buy one with a busted display and switch things around if I get no answers... Anyway, hope this may have helped...If so, give a thanks plz... Good day
Just noticed when swapping my battery that one has red x's and so does the phone. My phone has never been wet. Or rained on. I never take it in the bathroom when showering either. My older battery's sticker is white.
Are there only two indicators? One on phone and one on battery by battery contacts?
Glad I have insurance... But what if I ever want to sell it...
Red Xs dont mean the indicators have been tripped. When the stickers turn solid red, it means theyve been exposed to moisture.
Learn something new everyday! Great Q and A.

Why then is one battery solid white and the other is white with red x's like inside the phone? TIA
The battery that came with the phone has red X's and the two I received from LG don't, even thought they are the same brand and model of battery, weird!
Ok. Thank God! I take really good care of my devices and was very worried! Thanks!!!

Just because it's the same battery doesn't mean they might not have a different type of sticker...Manufacturers do change things from time to time.

Ya they tend to do that with many components of the phone like camera, etc. Nothing is 100% (for the most part lol)
