I'm seeking a bit of advice...
About 6 months ago I bought a Verizon GS4 for my father who is technically illiterate. I rooted the phone and got rid of most of the bloatware that would have just confused him. I did not install a custom rom or recovery etc, just kept the stock OS. He has been using the phone for the past six months. However he recently did something to the phone that may have bricked it (don't ask me what cause I have no idea).
Now when powering up the phone it goes straight to the Android recovery menu. I've tried wiping cache and doing a factory reset, but it still goes straight to the stock recovery. Another strange thing is that with the power completely off when I plug the charger in the phone will vibrate in pulses about 4 seconds apart continuously.
Any ideas what can be done about this? If I have to I can try to get the phone back with ODIN but I wanted to seek advice first. Thanks in advance.

The most effective way would be to Odin. Now you can just disable the bloatware and if you either get the ota to 5.0.1 or install a custom launcher hide the ones you can't.

So at this point I'm thinking my only option is to restore with ODIN. I believe the phone is NC5. Will the OTA to 5.0.1 mess things up because the phone is rooted? Or perhaps I should root at all and just disable the bloatware...that's probably the best thing at this point.

The OTA will remove root. However disabling apps is a decent alternative to uninstalling them. Personally, anymore I only root basic phones that have very limited internal memory. The OTA is smooth and it works fairly well from my use for a day.

I'd also like to know about this. I used CASUAL to root my phone, and while I appreciate the features in the 4.1.2 update, I really don't want to lose root. Any insight into this matter would be appreciated.
Perhaps this is what you are looking for if your just worried about keeping root:

Updating won't 'brick' your phone (not sure if that is even possible with this phone without doing something incredibly drastic). Worst case you can always Odin back to stock - just back everything up first. Excellent guide here on how to do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
But since you are unlocked I would look into flashing a custom ROM to get the full advantage of it (Jelly Beans or CleanRom are excellent). Tutorial on that is also in the link above.
Hope this helps.

I clicked yes on the update and now I get this message on boot and I can't get to the recovery menu:
“System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help.”
Things I did to my phone prior to this:
- rooted with Framapak
- CWM installed
- Encrypted the internal storage
I'll be praying to Odin tonight...
Use Root Explorer or equivalent and delete the SDM.apk in system/apps. This is the apk that checks for updates.
Oh and if you want to keep root it is never a good idea to accept an OTA update.

Odin can be picky after using casual also (try the rooted odin file if stock fails as well, thats what i had to do). You may need to remove the casual drivers as well for odin to recognize the phone, below is a link on that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzghcV8HVVk
Also the new release of casual for the 4.1.2 update is set to be released tonight, does anyone know if he could just re-run and to get root and a custom recovery back?
Hopefully not needed.

Thankfully I was able to get it to boot into recovery mode eventually. Odin and Kies worked correctly to recognize the phone in download mode and I tried the root66 image with no luck. I'm downloading the VRALJB now to see if that works.
Update: I got my phone back to stock using the guide heric1 posted and the "alternate restore" image here. No bricks in my house.
Use this to update won't loose root...

Take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261478 created by developer beanstown106. Here you will find the latest update modified and placed into a flashable zip file through your custom recovery. If you flash one of those two files that he has, you can have the latest update, keep your root and unlocked bootloader, and be on a stock ROM.
There are two versions of the stock 4.1.2 ROM. The odex version doesn't allow for custom themes to be flash over the stock ROM, while the deodex version does allow for custom themes to be flashed over the stock ROM.
If you don't want 4.1.2 altogether, you can use Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro to freeze the SDM 1.0 file. A slightly more challenging method would be to use Root Explorer or something similar to it to go in and modify the name of the file.
---------- Post added at 10:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 AM ----------
For me I use the odex because I have no intention on using themes. My custom ROM and theming days have long passed. All I need is the ability create backups of my stock ROM and the ability to take advantage or root required applications such as Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro.

I need some help from you experts...
My GS4 was rooted, and working great. My wife decided to try and update my phone for me, grrrrrrr.
Now I am not rooted, and it can't seem to get it done again. Also anytime I try to update it ends with an error. When I saw this, I attempted to use Odin to flash back to a stock OS. No luck. I did a factory reset and tried again, no luck. Still when I power up, the screen says "custom". I can't get back to the absolute bare bones factory OS for the life of me! I was trying to do that so I could again root the phone.
How do I get back to the absolute stock OS so that I could sell or trade the phone?
How do I get it back to stock so I could root it again? What options do I have to root these days, Odin doesn't like me right now! I am guessing I don't have the most up to date file. Mine is probably 6 months old.
Any help is much appreciated.

Need help with Re Root as well
I need a little assistance in re-rooting my phone as well. I had SuperSU on my phone and had root access. I selected the "Unroot" button in SuperSu and boy that was a mistake.I thought that this one button was a super "undo" button.
To my understanding, in order to uninstall Safestrap (I bought the phone from the store with ME7 installed ), I need to have root access. I can't seem to find the tutorial I used on how to root the phone with the the MI1 build.
The Goal:
I'm trying to get as bone stock as possible in order to return the phone. I don't like the phone and I am very unhappy that I can only use TW based ROMS. I'm within my 14 day trial period but unfortunately it ends tomorrow.
I'm downloading a stock ROM right now that I will flash via Odin once I manage to re root the phone and uninstall safestrap but I'm lost on how to root the phone again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Correct, that is where I was referring and yes he would not have root, one of his questions was how he gets back to stock OS to trade etc...
If he is mj7 that seems to me to be his only option if he doesn't want to lose data.
There is this which would really take it back to factory for mj7 wiping everything.

But he wasn't really specific about which firmware he was on so that's the best answer I can give him at the moment.
Is there any reason I shouldn't use the factory data reset in settings, after using Stump Root, to restore to factory? Is there even a need to unroot before data reset? It's not soft bricked, everything works fine and I don't really want to use the LG Flash Tool if it's not needed. Thank you in advance.
You can factory reset without issue, but stump makes changes to the system and a factory reset doesn't do anything to the system.
Stump will not work again until you use flashtool to restore.

Yes, but the system partition will still be somehow modified from stock. Even if you use the unroot option in SuperSU.
It would probably work fine, mine did, but some apps might not work such as some banking apps that check for root modification.
I suggest you do the buyer a favor and use flashtool to completely restore. Plus, as stated before, stump will not work again until it's been fully restored with flashtool. So in the case your buyer wants to root, you could save them a headache by restoring before you sell.

Screw it, just ran the flash tool and worked first time out. Back to stock and off it goes. Gonna miss this phone but need to make room, and funds for the Note 4. Thanks guys.
I had to factory reset from stock recovery and I just re-installed SuperSU, double checked with Rootchecker and all is good still. Unless something creeps up later..
I don't mean to beat a dead horse, as I'm sure it's been brought up. But every search I've done just brings up how to update to OC1 without losing root. All the way back to the original Motorola Droid, I've always rooted and added a custom recovery and ROM to every phone I've had. I was running Hyperdrive RLS20 and loved it. I've been using Hyperdrive since my Galaxy S3. Then I saw Hyperdrive RLS21 came out and decided I wanted to give it a shot. And although I've flashed over a few hundred ROMs no problem, this time really screwed my phone. I could only get into DL mode. I tried about 25 different ways until I had Kies fix it, which put it on 5.0.1. Can I revert down with Odin? Or is there anything I can do to get root and SU back. Any help would be much, MUCH appreciated
Nope, by taking the latest OTA (or in this case Kies) you've locked yourself into the latest version, for which there is currently no Root
That sucks. No way to use Odin in order to downgrade or anything? This is the first time since I've ever owned an android phone that I've been stuck without root

Don't lump me In with that crowd. I had no intention on going to 5.0.1. If you read my original post, I was upgrading to Hyperdrive KK21 from KK20 (and yes, I followed every single instruction to the T. My only guess is that the USB connection got messed up and only flashed a portion causing the problems) and it **** the bed mid-update. I couldn't get into SS recovery or even stock recovery, only DL mode. I spent 2 days without a working phone trying to flash every single Odin file that retained root and they all failed. So I used Kies to try to repair it and ended up ****ed on 5.0.1. The one solution I didn't want. I've NEVER had an android since the D1 that wasn't rooted running a custom ROM. Which is why I'm so desperately trying to get back to rooted. While 5.0.1 is actually a very nice OS, not having all the root options is killing me. And since its now 2 generations old, my hopes that a root exploit will be found, or that people even care enough to try to find one are extremely low. But, I sure hope I'm wrong, and that an exploit for one of the newer generations Galaxies will work on this one too. I'm OCD about having root and this is killing me

If you're ever in this situation again, give up on retaining your current root, flash back to true stock (with a re-partition .pit file as well), and re-root. If you had flashed the nc5 full-wipe with the .pit file and just restored root from a clean system, you would have been fine.

You cannot flash anything with flashfire. If you flash that tar, you WILL brick.

You can't downgrade from OC1.
Downgrade isn't a root issue, it is a bootloader issue. Unless the bootloader gets unlocked, we're stuck on OC1
kingroot does work
I had done the dumb thing and was impatient and did the oc1 update to later find out you can not downgrade and im on Verizon Samsung galaxy s4 (sch-i545) which even on kit kat is very limited to rooting it.. but on a whim I seen a post about king root and it mentioned that and I did see this myself but it will say not supported like it did on mine. but I figured what the hell.. whats the worst that could happen... well im rooted now and only tried because I had seen others make that comment.. well kingroot works for s4 Verizon with locked bootloader.. no need to downgrade from oc1.. just get the app and click... took less than 10 mins if I rememner right.. and I have had no pronlems in 3 days.. it oddly even fixed some of the bugs I was having with oc1 like incoming calls not ringing

You have root. But you have a much lower chance of getting an unlocked Bootloader than anyone on NC5/NK1/NK4. They have root, module loading, and a potential for kexec to run custom kernels.
Don't upgrade to OC1 via OTA if you haven't already everyone! Use Muniz_ri's keeproot upgrade method!

I rooted my Kyocera with Kingroot, worked well. Wasn't to keen on some of the files it was adding and found I couldn't unroot with Kingroot built in feature. So I then found I could use SuperSu-Me to rid myself of Kingroot and purchased. It removed Kingroot and I am still unable to uninstall root so that I can upgrade to lollipop. All I get is software update failed. Any suggestions. I even did a factory reset and phone is still rooted. I have not tried any install and custom roms.
Did you ever fix this?
OTA uptate to lolipop bricked my phone... I was able to find a Rooted 5.1 rom to rescue it. But like you, I cannot remove root and all future update attempts keep failing...
Did you try to flash a stock 5.1 rom on your rooted 5.1 rom? That should allow to get back to normal upgrade (back in time, it usually worked, still I am not aware of latest android pains regarding that matter)

I am not sure you need it to be verizon to just be able to leap to "future" android version, unless this version is only available via kies from your PSP/carrier.
flashing any stock rom might work. Alternative would be to find an unrooted kernel for your android version of a rooted but else stock ROM (as some people do as they like TW experience but with the added benefits of root). But they are just guesses, I wish someone with more technical know-how would join, I just talk from past experiences, not from current ones, so it might have changed.

I did find some custom roms for marshmallow and nougat. But that's totally new territory for me to learn how to put those ones on and of course no updates. 5.1 is as far as the Brigadier went officially. This was not a common phone so it's support and information for it is scarce

Do you have xposed installed? Sometimes that can cause problems.
I do not, I am going to attempt to put TWRP on and then flash the Super SU Binary so that I can run FlashFire.
Lots a learning lol
Locked bootloader. You can run TWRP from adb but you cannot permanently flash it to the device.
I rooted with Kingroot and updated my phone. It was on 4.4.2 1.102vz. My phone boots up but screen goes blank after the Kyocera screen. I powers it off one time but it was luck. I can boot it into stock recovery. I would like to flash the 5.1 ROM to it and beagle to use it. I do not know how to flash a ROM to the phone since it does not have fast boot. Can anyone assist me? The phone was new and never used too. Was going to be a great phone for me at work. I have rooted before and took a ota and I only risked loosing root. But that was with Droid phones. That is where I have more experience in.
