[Q] Bad power control - charging status jumps around - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

My 2 y.o. Verizon Note 2 died the other day. Would boot up but as soon as I unlocked the screen, it would shut down.
I've re-flashed (was using Alliance Build 30 since its release.)
I was finally able to flash it back to Stock using ODIN (I605VRALJB) and it flashes successfully.
Side note - I could charge the battery to 100% by charging from Philz Recovery before I flashed to stock.
Now in stock, it will start to boot but not just shuts down at different points in the boot process.
I don't have spare battery - so I suppose I should try a different battery to see if it is a high current draw fault in the battery but I'm wondering if anyone has ever seen a defective power control circuit on the MOBO. Now that I am at stock and can charge without booting the phone, the charge indicator will repeatedly jump between 100% and 80% (the charge status reported in Philz before flashing back to Stock) with the progress dots moving across the bottom.
Anyone see something like this? I hate to buy a new battery to find out it is a defective phone (will see if I can find one at a Verizion store or BB where I can return). But if it is just a battery, will save me using an upgrade right now (I've got 3 business lines with contracts that expire in the fall and want to do a contract swap rather than an upgrade at this point.)

OK - Batteries are cheap - worth a $12 gamble to avoid replacing the phone at this point. Will see if I can find a local retailer. No mobile phone is a BIG problem for my work.

It was the battery
Stupid battery had gone Tango Uniform. Had the wife pick one up at Batteries+ ($35 not $12 but needed to make some decisions quick with upcoming travel.)
Thankfully I had managed to get a Recovery backup before it completely fell over - so after rerooting, unlocking and such - I'm back in business no worse for the wear.
I realize I answered my own question and am talking to myself - but maybe this will help someone else.
May keep spare battery around for my daily driver from now on.

Just got my S2, but it won't turn on! :(

So I had bought this phone off ebay and when I got it today I tried to turn it on, but nothing happened.
I then plugged the phone in and tried powering it on and still nothing. I tried charging the battery and left it alone for an hour and afterwards the result is the same. Basically when I plug in the phone to the charger, the phone's screen will flash a battery icon as if its going to charge for a split second and then go blank. And then it will flash the battery icon again and then go blank again and it will go on like this for a couple of minutes until the screen finally stays blank.
So as I said even though I leave the phone to charge for a while, it still won't turn on and the only result seems to be that the phone gets warm near the camera. Also I tried to see if download mode works and pressed both volume buttons and I get a brief flash of some words. After doing it for several times I saw it said 'Low battery, cannot download' all in red.
I searched the forum and tried leaving the battery out for a while and also putting it in the fridge to see if anything would happen but nothing. So can anyone help? Is it just the battery?
Could be the battery - if you are on good terms with a local ATT store, try going there and asking if you can borrow a battery from their demo device to see if yours will power up. That's the best cheap way I can think of to rule that out.
Other possibility is a bad USB port. My first device developed a failure at about 2 months - I'm actually on day 5 with my warranty replacement. There is another member here, Moustro I think, who also may have a bad USB port. He and I were wondering if perhaps there was a bad batch out there. I'm not sure what ATT's warranty policy is for items re-sold on eBay, but might be worth checking out...
yeah that does sound like it could be the battery boot loop, take some photos of the battery to see if it is the oem... if it is the oem try a stand alone chager

I live in Canada don't think I'd get much help from AT&T probably.
Also the battery is the original one and not a replacement. I left it unplugged for a few hours and just now plugged it back in and its the same battery icon flashing for a couple of minutes and then blank screen. No charging whatsoever. I tried different outlets and different USB ports on my notebook and its all the same.
I also have an Infuse and charging for that every by every method is just fine so its my SII that's messed up.
If it's any condolence to you, I just bought a brand new GS2 from the ATT store today. The battery was semi-charged when I got it, and when it ran out, I plugged it in and got the same thing you did. Battery is flashing, cannot power it on, even plugged in. I also got the red "Low battery, cannot download".
I spent the better part of 4 hours reloading my apps and email addys, and everything else to get my phone up and running, and now this.
I am going back to the ATT store tomorrow and requesting a different brand new one.
This is my 2nd GS2, because I destroyed my first one in an accident.
Just as dandrumheller was saying. I had simimiar issues where the phone battery would blink on and off even if the charger was plugged in or not while the phone was powered off. The only way I could get my phone to boot to prepare it for warranty exchange was to flash a rom through Odin. But if you can't get it into download mode this wouldn't work.
My suggestion would be to use a different battery. That would let you know if its a hardware issue or bad battery.
hmm...
I was able to to get it to power on last night with what little battery was left. I then plugged it into the USB of my Mac, rather than the charging wart. When I awoke this AM, I have a fully charged battery, and a working phone. I will let the battery run out again completely today and see what happens.
That's great news! I hope it continues to work for you
I would not let it completely run out. Our batteries don't like that. Don't go below 25 percent. I'm glad you got it working. I know you're relieved.

I'm not sure relieved is the right word.
Apprehensive might be better.
We all know AT&T isn't in the best graces with most.
They must be the ***** of Comcast.
Anybody got anymore suggestions?? Can't get it to work no matter what I try.
Call samsung and see if they will honor the warranty? Don't know their rules, but in another thread someone suggested that sale of the phone does not void the warranty.

Max,
Were you able to find a fix for your problem? i bought a SGII from ebay and is presenting the same issue
For what its worth I am able to enter download with NO battery. In fact I ONLY do it without a battery. I just hold both volume buttons and plug in the USB to my computer while not pressing anything else. Without battery.
Thought the OP said he couldn't enter download.... so if that doesn't throw it in download it's more than just battery.

Guys,
I tried this and it worked...
At a last resort, i put the battery on nexus to see if it will charge and DAMN !! it did,, so the battery was not the issue...so i grab a swab with little alcohol then clean the terminals on the battery and the spring connectors on the phone... and voila !!! started charging and keeps working perfectly.
It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you guys.
Glad you were able to isolate the problem.

Same problem
Flashing on for a sec then flashing off, buttons flashed too. Phone got hot around the battery. Couldn't have described the problem better
Took some alcohol, cleaned the contacts for the USB connector, cleaned the battery contacts, and booyah, got the charging symbol again! Problem was, I didn't use the phone for a month, it rode around in the front pocket of my laptop bag, and apparently got the contacts dirty. A little toothpick and q-tip fun later, and my phone started charging again. Thanks -

Really? I've had mostly HTC phones and we could run them down pretty low.. I've been running mine down past 10 and it's been fine.. stock battery.
I had the same problem as op. My last resort was to cut the micro usb end of a spare cable and connected it to the (+) and (-) on the phone itself. since the phone booted up, i knew it was the battery. Next, i did the same thing but (+) and (-) on the battery itself while connected to a computer. i held it in place for about 10 seconds. put the battery back in the phone and it started charging again. im sure it wasnt the safeat thing to do, but it worked. Maybe the dead battery needed some kind of jump.
btw. The wires you would be using are the the black and red. and i got this idea from

I believe these are different types of batteries. Not Lithium, but something else. I bought some spare batteries from eBay and the batteries had the same instructions... That it is not good to let them die completely, and charge then preferably when they still have 1/3 charge left.

Returning an unlocked, rooted, custom ROM'd Atrix to ATT warranty exchange

I recently had a replacement handset sent, and before i could revert the old one to STOCK SBF etc, the new one was stolen....so now i can't power the old one up to flash anything to it because i have no battery left. I don't really want to pay $50 or so for a new battery of it just to return to stock....
any thoughts on best course of action?
I fear ATT will ding me the full charge for voided warranty if they see it like this...but they might not, you just never know
Ask them to send you another one before you send yours back?
You will fail miserably, either have them send you one in the maillfirst like the above post says or put a fruitcake on it they might not accept it at the store or if you do it by mail they might bill you for it later lol so be careful
that's a solid plan...i had mentioned battery life sucked and they said try the new handset first. i can tell them my battery life is still very poor and they will probably agree to send me a new one.
I had a similar issue where my batter was too low to flash and I was stuck at the Moto screen. I went out to Best buy mobile (could be any celluar place ie AT&T or something) and told them I was updating my phone and it rebooted and got stuck at this screen and drained my battery I asked if they could let me charge the battery in one of their atrix's. They ended up giving me a new battery, hope this helps you if the other way doesn't work out for you.

This.
Or grab a USB cable you dont want, cut it open, and tape the red wire to + and the black wire to -. Let it charge for a few hours and you'll be fine.
Most stores don't carry an atrix battery at this point...
Charging with USB does no good cause I don't have a battery so it won't power up.
And getting a new battery from ATT may not work cause they want the imei which I don't have!

is the battery possible done for?

I received a broken phone that had been shattered pretty bad from one of my bosses. I ended up finding a replacement digitizer/screen/chassis for fairly cheap. 5 days later I received the parts, and assumably the battery was rundown before it was handed to me, so it sat dead for about 5 days while I waited on this part to repair it. I swapped the mainboard and everything looked really good from the broken phone besides the chassis/screen. After I get it together it appears to be doing a bootloop at the HTC Sense screen. I get it into hte bootloader on the next boot. First I did a memory clear, reboot back into bootloader. then accidently while trying to shut it down i selected fastboot. I get it to start one more time and select factory reset. it still gets stuck at htc boot screen with no indication its doing a factory reset. So then finally I shut it off in what appears to be a bootloop, restart it and notice it says "LOW Voltage, please replace battery" So I'm thinking at this point the battery maybe just low and needs charging before trying to do a hard reset. I turn it off again but notice the whole unit is VERY hot, i've never held a phone this hot. Anticipating damage if I let it stay on charger, I pull it off the charger and let it cool. Now I can't get it to boot. While plugged into the A/C adapter I do get a flashing orange light indicating its charging "or trying to" and I leave it on there for a few hours. I've now tried booting it while holding down the power for 10 seconds, over a minute, with volume down and without, many different combinations and it won't boot. I get no lights unless i have it on the A/C power. If I leave it on the charger for over an hour I do get the flashing orange light for a few seconds and then it goes off completely. I called Sprint, they won't sell me a battery because its integrated on this unit. So I called HTC and they want me to ship the whole phone to them, and obviously its out of warranty since I opened it up so now they want $140.00 to fix it and 280.00 if the mainboard has to be replaced. Ouch. I've probably bought over 50 EVO's for our employees on our Sprint Business Account between the Original 4G and the 3D and after seeing this model which one of the owners purchased I have to say that this integrated battery like the stupid iphones is a HUGE disappointment as far as engineering. I tried the 1 minute on A/C power power button holding technique to mimic a battery pull reset, and get nothing. I would never buy this phone for my employees based on the battery problem alone. I've seen batteries killed in a number of scenarios not including just heavy phone usage. I'm still using my original 4G and was going to finally swap to this phone after repairing it. Disappointment doesn't begin to describe this phone. So is the consensus that the battery is dead and I need to get another one by sending it out to HTC? Any other revival tips?
My phone did the flashing orange light when I took it out of the box.
I think you can buy parts online. I'd do a search. If you changed the screen a battery should be cake.
Supposedly only two screws to get to it.

Do u have adb tools? If u hook it up does adb recognize it at all? Lazypanda has an unbricker but I sincerely doubt it will work for this. I would be mad if I bought a battery and a bunch of parts just to have them not work bc its the motherboard that needs replaced.
Was the phone dropped in water or from a height of over 10ft? Normal drops may break the screen but the motherboard? Guess it is possible.
Here's what you do, add the phone to your account, add insurance, then next day call assurion make a claim and pay the 100 and have a newly refurbished lte.

That would be insurance fraud... and if you make a claim the next day i am pretty sure they would figure it out.

Phone died; can it be resurrected?

So, my DNA is outside of the warranty period (was provided with the phone after numerous issues with another phone model in January I had originally purchased last August) and yesterday, it appears that it managed to brick itself. I was running cm 10.2 ( without issue I might add), when yesterday morning, after being on a wireless charger all night, the battery drained from 100% to 0% in about half an hour while getting incredibly hot. The odd thing is, I couldn't find a software culprit during that time. Also, the phone basically started to trickle charge only, even when the phone was off. Thus, I waited about an hour with the phone off to charge it to 10% and bottled into TWRP to restore a recovery of a Sense ROM. Mid-recovery, the phone shut down instantly and since, I haven't been able to get it to charge (no light) after multiple attempts with different charging solutions and combinations of button presses. I have a new phone on order via my carrier contract upgrade, but I'd love to resuscitate this thing, if not just to get my data off that hadn't been backed up. Does this sound like a hardware issue (I.e. Bad battery) or do you guys think the phone bricked itself when it shut down during the restoration process? Any troubleshooting tips?
chances are hardware failure as it seems common lately on here lol and you can buy a phone with a bad screen and lose your info or jtag and lose your info or keep a pretty black and red paper weight either way unless it takes a full charge and you are luck to get recovery back up a good backup to take your out of luck enjoy your new device coming

It seems that way. Been on the charger for 3 days with no luck. I think I'm going to order one of those case opening tools and see if I can remove the battery cable for a reboot.

[Q] SGH-i777 - From Shoebox to Brick

Hey Folks,
I have a Samsung Galaxy SII (SGH-i777) that I used a couple of years ago. It was my first Android phone and I loved it very much (until corporate made me an iSheep).
The phone was retired to a shoe box for the last 1+ years and I recently dug it up so I could get it set up for my little bro who somehow recently fell on his phone with it in his pocket and shattered the screen (don't ask... I don't get it either).
Anyways long story short -- the phone sat idle for a long time, when I pulled it out it wouldn't boot up at all. Assumed that the battery had discharged so I plugged it in to see if it would start up. The battery logo would intermittently flash on the screen and show a drained battery logo but even letting the phone sit for a day did not provide me any results.
Fast forward 3-6 months. Today I replaced the charging board thinking that there was some issue with the USB connector on the phone that was preventing it from getting power. Once that was done I discovered that I was able to get the phone to boot into Odin mode. Great! No boot, no recovery, but download mode seemed to be better than nothing.
I have tried, in vain, to flash stock firmware to this phone via Odin, and even though all indicators point to it being successful, once I finish the Samsung logo comes up on the screen, goes off and that's it. I can see the 4 LEDs on the buttons at the bottom of the phone flash every 5 seconds as well as a faint flicker on the screen staggered between the LED flashes.
Looking for any further suggestions as to what I may be able to try. I have searched various sources on XDA and other sources but I haven't quite found anything that matches my exact symptoms.
Furthermore, I can't be sure what Kernel/ROM I was last running on this phone. Maybe Siyah kernel, maybe CM 10,1 with Flux kernel. Idk.
Any input is appreciated!
Seems I should mention this other detail --
With the battery in, I cannot get into download mode -- it just states 'Low Battery!! Can't Download!!" This is presumably due to the fact that the battery is completely discharged -- maybe incapable of holding a charge but perhaps this is indicative of a more serious hardware failure.
I'd guess the battery is completely shot.
I bought a replacement battery from here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111014533334?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Very likely --
Since you got me to shift focus here, a quick search is telling me that it won't boot without a battery due to a feedback circuit. This would explain the ability to go into download mode but the lack of boot / flashing LEDs I guess.
Can someone confirm?
If the phone was working normally when it was put away, I would expect it to be working normally when it was pulled it back out. Your story is a little confusing, but did you ever try booting the phone with a fully charged battery? In the circumstances you describe, that would be the first logical trouble shooting step. And if you haven't tried that, then it is still the next logical trouble shooting step. Also, you can't assume that the original battery that you left in the phone is still able to hold a charge. It still may be good, but you can't assume that for testing purposes. Incidentally, the battery should have been pulled from the phone before it was put away.
I do not get any indication that the original battery is actually charging. Charging icon just flashes on the screen briefly in between LED and screen flashes (again, presumably due to the battery being completely dead/incapable of holding a charge since I left it in the phone this entire time).
I guess I'll go ahead and buy another battery and see what happens.
It is my understanding then that this phone will not boot on the charger without battery due to a feedback circuit. Correct?

Even if the battery is good, but fully discharged, it may not charge in the phone. You would have to have an external charger. Phones are not consistent, and many phones probably would charge a fully discharged battery, but I have seen a number of people report that a fully discharged battery would cause the exact same behavior as you report. If it were mine, I wouldn't throw the battery away yet.
If you know anyone with an I777, you could borrow their fully charged battery for a few minutes just to see if your phone will boot.
You are correct that the phone will not boot on the charger when the battery is out, although you should be able to successfully flash firmware through Odin with the battery out, and the computer supplying the power, but still, as far as I know, it will not boot after the flash without a working battery.
The battery was indeed at fault. Ordered a new one on Amazon, popped it in and voila -- we're up and running.
Thanks for the input guys! Much appreciated!
