So after weeks of saying "no, thanks" to the Lollipop update, Verizon decided yesterday to force it down our throats. Many reports on the Verizon LG G3 community page, as well as other Android sites. Basically, the update starts downloading by itself (even if you have WiFi off!!).
I am now at the point where I get a screen asking to "install now" or "install later". The "later" option only offers another time in the day, there is just no way to cancel the darn thing.
Based on the myriads of reports of bugs and issues with WiFi, battery, etc., I definitely do not want it. Is there any way to not have it installed? I am extremely pissed off that Verizon is forcing us to take this "update" when they clearly have to know it is a piece of crap full of bugs.

This is far from new, afaik Verizon always does this for every phone and OTA (I've witnessed it myself on every single device I've owned at least). The only way to stop it would be to root and freeze the system update apk's. One more reason why I'll never own a Verizon device I can't root and unlock.

Sure it's always been easy, just say no or root and load a better custom stock based ROM from the forum.
Or root and load a bug fixed much better stock lollipop from the forum.
Easy as pie and nothing new so stop freaking.
I was rooted 12, just updated to a skydragon 23c Rom, with 4.1 kernel, last night. Pretty painless.
Anyhow, to not take an update you need to disable/freeze or rename the System updates app. Once it's downloaded to your phone, you need to purge the errant update. I'm pretty sure bweN diorD's reference thread had a link to the thread on purging the dl'd update.

There is a section on removing a downloaded OTA.

Root and you can block it.
You cannot indefinitely block an OTA without root.
Forced to update
I downloaded the update but it wont do anything until you choose install from the System Ready To Install Screen. When you see "install now or install later",Just hit the back button and it will not install. You will keep getting a "System Update Ready to install message" but its easily ignored. I have been doing this for a few days and I'm still running Kit Kat
It'll only download when on wifi, so if you catch it (which I always do thanks to Pushbullet notifications), I just turn off wifi. It'll stop the download stating that wifi is needed, and when turning back on wifi, you'll be good. I've only had to do this twice so far over the last few weeks.

That used to be true (download on WiFi only) for weeks, but starting this week, the download is happening automatically even with WiFi off. Multiple reports of this on the LG G3 Verizon community page. So the update already downloaded. I have been able to avoid installation by force closing the System Update app, but I know I'll have to continue doing it over and over. I just think it sucks that Verizon is aggressively forcing the upgrade on users who do not want it.

Hello all. I've been reading with much dread on the changes to my phone with the Verizon forced OTA update. I really don't care about the extra battery bar, and didn't want to have my battery life wasted by the Verizon Location bloatware. I caught my phone twice trying to install the OTA, and I defered it until tomorrow.
That's when I notice you can "reject" the update. Currently if you go into settings, status, you can then click on reject. It appears the OTA will not install.
Hope this helps,
BOBBY
PS- I have a screen shot but can't post a Photobucket link as a new member yet.
I read on here that it will be forced upon you on Feb. 5.
Don't be afraid...
Nope
I rejected the OTA a couple of times; didn't stop it from installing when I wasn't looking a few days ago.
It really sucks that you can't permanently reject an update if you don't want it.
My son has a DroidX that is bone stock. He doesn't care about mods whatever, his phone is all beat up and he could care less what the wallpaper/icons etc are. He just wants it to work.
When the GB update came out for it, he absolutely DID NOT want it but eventually it installed anyway and his phone has been really messed up ever since (it worked fine before the update)
He has so many apps installed that he really doesn't want to factory reset it ( he doesn't even know where he got half of them) but it is going to have to be reset soon.

My phones actually rejecting it normally. Ive restarted my phone a couple of times and it notifies me that its DL however it just fails to install. I don't want the update right now but i do wonder if that will come back to bite me in the as*
Ever since the update my phone seems to lag just a little bit when scrolling screens in sense. Or has it always been this way and I'm just noticing?

You can always save it for later.
The file is called OTAPkg.zip and should be in /cache/fumo. You can just download it and postpone the install then move it out to somewhere where you can always use it at a later date.
I got my Rezound last week and I'm loving it. Right now I'm running stock, however i will be rooting in the foreseeable future. However i noticed a couple of times when i had to Restart my phone that the recent OTA update would DL only to fail to install. I don't want the update as i've heard and seen it reduces battery life. Should i worry my phone is defective? a couple of more days so i can return it and get another one. Would that be wise? thoughts?
You haven't done anything to it? If you haven't just take it to the Verizon store and have them look at it. If they can't get the update on exchange it. There's no reason why it shouldn't accept the update if you haven't done anything afaik.

I've not done anything, still running full stock. That's what i was thinking, i don't want this to come back and bite me in the ass. Plus i still have the 14 days to bring it directly to verizon. thanks
I am exeriencing the same thing...happened several times; firmware downloads and nothing happens. I reboot and nothin. The phone is stock. The last time after rebooting, it showed a push air thing in the notificication, and when I clicked it nothin happened...oy.
When I check the status, it just shows a rescent date along with the description of the update...and nothing happens when I click check new.
I sorta want the update so I can get rid of the headphone jack noise...and I feel like if I go to a verizon store, not much will be accomplished...hmmmmm

I went to Verizon today and the guy was able to update my phone. I actually didn't want to but eh. I told him what he did and all he told me was "Check Update" and plug it in the to the charger *which is the way my phone had been when i tried updating* and it began to install.
Hmm still nothing happens when I click check new, tried with it charging and unplugged... Might pop into a store later and see what's up, phone keeps freezing on meh! Have any negative experiences from the update so far? I'm weary of that verizon agent thing running all the time

I had the same issue with the "check new" screen just disappearing when I was completely stock. I called verizon a couple days ago and they checked to make sure that I had tried to update with 4G, 3G, 4G w/ wireless, 3G w/ wireless. I had also tried doing a factory reset and pulling the SIM and battery out for 20 minutes. If all those dont work for you, they say you can either get a "certified like new" phone shipped to you or you can get on a 3way call with htc and verizon support to get the issue resolved. You might want to try those things and if still nothing I would call.
Hi,
Does anyone have any info or idea if the AMBER update will be available OTA for L920s with the DEV ROM? I don't see that entry in the update schedule page from Nokia. I just chatted with them and they said they have nothing scheduled at the moment, and suggested instead to go back to my ROGERS ROM (not even in my wildest dreams!).
I know I can flash it, but I don't want to go through the pain of doing everything again, including re-setting all my apps et al. If the OTA update comes out in a couple of weeks or so, I don't mind waiting, but I don't want to wait and then realise in a couple of months that it is not coming out and have to flash it anyhow.
Any news? Do we have to start making some noise on Nokia's forums and social media?
Thanks.

In case anyone else is wondering, I started getting the update OTA last week. I wasn't expecting it so my connection was very slow and I just soft reset it... Apparently, the download got somehow messed up upon resuming. To make a long story short, after it was installed, the screen lock didn't work properly: I could only unlock my phone right after it turned on; after that, it would not respond at all, so I had to soft-reset every time I wanted to unlock the screen -the other option being deactivating the screen lock altogether, but that doesn't look very promising, especially for battery consumption and pocket dials.
As it turns out, I ended up flashing the firmware, which is ironic because I could have done it a while ago when it came out, but didn't want to go through all the hassle.
My only problem now is that some apps that should work, like Nokia Pro Camera, do not allow me to install them. My firmware does say it is the latest version, and it also identifies the Lumia Amber in Details, but the app is not available.
Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks

Hi, I recently updated my phone to Android 4.4.4 and now I am having this issue: Every time the phone acquires a cell signal, GPS turns on about 10 seconds later and stays on for a long time. This happens even if the GPS and location services are turned off. As a result my battery drains in half the time that it used to. If I stop IQ Agent process, GPS icon immediately goes away until the next time phone reacquires the signal. This happens multiple times a day. I can easily reproduce the problem by toggling airplane mode. I don’t think it’s a conflict with any of the apps because the problem exists if I boot into safe mode. I called HTS but they never heard of it, said they will escalate the problem to the developers, but I don’t know if anything will be done. Does anyone else experiencing the same problem? My phone is not rooted and locked.
Thanks…

That usually means nothing will be done.
I haven't heard of this. I typically recommend backing up your data, and doing a factory reset; as this often (although not always) clears up random bugs after an OTA. Smart of you to eliminate the possibility of 3rd party apps by trying Safe Mode. But there may still be some migrated user settings causing a conflict.

I just got off the phone with ATT just yesterday, and I can confirm they are aware of the issue. But seeing how Lollipop is just around the corner, you might want to wait a bit, unless of course you're in dire straits.

The HTC tech also said that Lollipop will be out soon, in fact he said they are in stage 2 testing (whatever that means). I just hope that the problem will not migrate to Lollipop.
I'm having a similar issue with my phone. Been sitting on my desk trying to charge, but it can't because the GPS is sucking away the battery.

You can turn off the GPS by stopping IQ Agent Service. It should stay off until the cell data connection is lost.
I think everyone should call them so they know it is happening to a lot of people. Otherwise nothing will get done. I am surprised that there is not that much chatter out there. It was hard to even find forum discussions.
Funny I just posted the same question in the generic M8 Q and A section. I just noticed it too. My battery life has not been affected that I can see after going through the data. I've gone and disabled any app that uses the GPS service but it's still coming on so it's not an app or app update that I can tell. I guess I can wait until LP comes out.
So far so good since I've stopped IQ Agent Service. It hasn't popped back up and I've made 5 or 6 phone calls since then.
I think I solved it…
I think I solved it… I believe the app DriveMode was causing an issue. Here is what I think happened. When I got my phone a year ago, I immediately disabled few apps, DriveMode was one of them. I believe the recent update was designed to more closely interact with DriveMode and even though the app was disabled, it appeared that as soon as the phone acquired data connection, it tried to determine whether or not the user was moving. When I re-enabled the app, I disabled it internally (within the app) and I guess that told the OS not to bother determining if the user was moving anymore. Here are the steps: I re-enabled DriveMode, I then went to google play and updated it to the latest version, I opened the app and immediately noticed GPS icon turned on, the screen appeared telling me to enable GPS, I checked ignore check box and left the location service running in battery save mode. I closed the Drive mode app and left it along without disabling it. I did this yesterday and haven’t noticed GPS turning on even once since then.
I hope this helps everyone solve this annoying problem; please let me know if this works for anyone…

I like this idea -
However, I was able to get rid of this issue by disabling the carrier IQ service. I did this using an application called Disable Service from the Google Play store.
Works like a charm, and has the added advantage of disabling the IQ service intrusion.

Just want to throw my $0.02 in here....I'm having hte same issues noted in the thread, and it's murdering my battery life. I typically get 24-30 hours of battery life easily on this phone, but now if i dont spend all day killing IQ Agent, i get about 7. I can't root my M8 due to some work restrictions, so it's all manual IQ Agent task killing fo rme. although I was EXTREMELY active yesterday in killing the service ~30 times throughout the day yesterday, Android System (where IQ Agent lies) still managed to run 2hr 24 minutes of GPS on, according to two different battery/service monitoring apps. This, mind you, all occurred without my actual GPS toggle ever being switched on.
I'm waiting for a call back from HTC, and AT&T punted completely and denied any knowledge of why it would happen (although ironically offering to remote into my phone to "diagnose" the issue, which I could not do becuase I was in transit when I called and they required I remain stationary...)
I'm 100% convinced it's entirely due to the IQ Agent task, or another involuntary watchdog service trigging IQ agent. This task is started under at least two distinct condition, with no fail:
my phone goes between 4G and LTE (Subway, between towers/coverage zones, all flipping day long in my concrete-and-steel office building...)
I make or receive a phone call (can feel teh phone get hot in ~2 minutes while on the phone).
switching in or out of airplane mode (which is really an extension of #1).
I love my M8 like crazy, but I cannot wait until my next phone because I absolutely refuse to purchase anything associated with a cell carrier ever again. Fvck that.
Agreed...DriveMode part of the problem

Agreed. I mostly followed these steps by downloading the latest DriveMode, walking through DriveMode setup, then disabling DriveMode and then stopping the IQ Agent Service. SInce then, GPS has performed as it should, only on demand. I did notice that when switching from mobile to a wi-fi network that requires a sign in that the GPS fires up. But again, killing the service stops the random GPS after logging into the wi-fi. So overall, much better than the constant on/off, but still ATT needs to resolve this at some point.
Have a carrieriq blocked/inactive build in testing so we shall see if it is indeed the culprit by end of day.
I've been testing this build for a couple of days now, and so far the GPS has stayed off like a good little app should. It only turns on when I expect.
Update/Reply From AT&T as of 03/23
Finally!!! An admission from AT&T that they jacked up our phones with their software update back in January. It's only taken a month and a half, 4 calls to text support, 3 attempts to reach their urgent care department (by the way... they are completely incompetent. They call from an unknown number, I normally don't answer but I also couldn't answer anyway due to being at work. They leave a message requesting you call a number in KY and leave a message. Left a message on two different occasions and provided the days and hours they could reach me. Of course they call whenever they want and the process starts all over) in addition to all this, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau that resulted in a call back from a corporate executive. Now the only problem is they don't have a solution for the issue yet and probably won't do anything with the Lollipop update that "SHOULD" be released within the next 15 days. No one should have to go through this but I honestly think everyone should file a BBB complaint just to show AT&T a lesson.

So - was it Carrier IQ? Did they say what was going on?
I know they said they don't have a solution, but it would be useful to know what is causing this. I found that disabling the carrier iq service does the trick, and WNC's ROM, which has it disabled by default, also does the trick.
Thanks for the update. My phone started doing the GPS thing a couple of weeks ago and my battery life has been shot.
The weirdest thing is that my issues only started 2 weeks ago, instead of when the update occurred in January, so ATT must be doing something weird on their network as well
I really really do hate asking for help and 99.63757% of the time I can fix things myself doing the necessary research into the problem(s) and potential solutions, but so far this one has me stumped and I'm too frustrated with it to just keep starting over so I'm asking for assistance from anyone that might be able to help, so here goes...
OK, so I picked up two H931 V30's the other day for $100 (for both, actually), one is slightly damaged (glass damage just under the Menu/Recents button area) but it's 100% functional, the second one is pristine. I did the conversion to the US998 without any issues on the undamaged one since the damaged one is for my Wife and she has no need for root/custom ROMs/massive amounts of tinkering like I've been doing for 20+ years or so. Unlocked the bootloader without issues too.
So, I get everything done according to the WTF guide (very nicely done piece of work, seriously) and it's up and running without issues. But then I decide to check and see if Magisk has an update so, I scroll over, find the Magisk icon, tap it, and I get that damned message I always get about updating to the latest version, either choose "NO THANKS" or "YES" and that's when the problems start. This is Magisk 18.0 by the way, and I've attempted this with 18.1 as well, and even the latest 19.1 and it still happens like this regardless:
The phone then suddenly turns into molasses in winter as far as operational speed goes. It chokes, then it dies, then the Home screen resets exceedingly slowly as if it suddenly went from the powerhouse phone it is to 1 frame per second or something in functionality.
The phone heats up like crazy, then I eventually am forced to hold Volume Down + Power and force it to reboot, and it does reboot and gets right back into the OS like nothing happened and everything works as normal.
But I cannot get Magisk to do anything at all, the app itself apparently never loads, doesn't function, I can't update it or get it to run in any way at all. Everything else works, including apps requesting root which is given by Magisk as it should. I know that with the unlocked bootloader Netflix won't install by default, and I know Magisk is installed and functional because Netflix shows up in the Play Store and I was able to install it and watch a video and the Magisk Manager icon is clearly right there on my device.
I've done this like 7 times now and I'm not going to do it again for the moment, I'm gonna end up corrupting something from all the flashing I think and then doing it again, then again, etc.
On my V20 I had this issue in the past (not recently) where when I attempted to execute the Magisk Manager app it constantly asked me that question when it starts up and regardless of "NO THANKS" or "YES" or even if it's updated to the latest version it always asks me that damned question and I've never been able to get it to stop. But with the V20 the app does load and I'm able to access features of the Magisk Manager.
On this V30, I can't do anything at all and I always have to reboot the phone hard and I'm kinda sick of doing that. So I started over again an hour ago, everything is working fine for the 8th time except probably Magisk. I haven't touched the icon but it's installed, root is working fine, but I really do want to understand WHY this crap keeps happening and WHY I can't get Magisk Manager to run properly without crapping out the phone.
If anyone can help or offer some suggestions I'm all eyes (given this is a text-based communication medium, obviously).
Thanks, and have fun, always...

Haha I love that you got the mint one and gave your wife the dinky cracked one.
Well the damage is inconsequential, and she's been using a Stylo 2 Plus that has glass damage in almost exactly the same place, go figure. I'm tougher on devices than she'll ever be but I do the tinkering around with stuff, not her.

Are you thinking the problem is with Magisk manager or with Magisk itself?

When we first started rooting the V30 (first with the official LG bootloader unlock codes for the few that were eligible) over a year ago, we had Magisk 16.0, 16.1, then Magisk 17.1. (I think 17.0 was just very unstable if I remember correctly.) As each became more stable we upgraded to newer versions, but some in between were never used. For the longest time, I delayed recommending 18.0 until it was proven.
18.0 upgraded to 18.1 easily, but Magisk Manager keeps nagging me to update to newer version. Clicking on Magisk Manager keeps prompting me to install newer version (for 19.x) but it never successfully installs. I know I will have to flash the uninstaller in TWRP and then download 19.1 and reinstall in TWRP. I hesitate doing that because it was a major pain last time to re-choose all the apps I want root or want to hide.
One time while doing it it I ended up with TWO Magisk Manager apps in my App drawer. I had to uninstall Magisk again (in TWRP) and reinstall yet again.
All that to say this.... Have you tried flashing uninstaller for Magisk in TWRP, then reinstalling 18.1 or 19.1 or whichever one you want?
Here's the uninstaller...

I'll give that a shot I suppose, can't really hurt much if it fails - and yes I'll do a TWRP backup first.
It's just odd because the root aspects are OK as stated, everything gets root that requires it (I only have a few apps like the root add-on for fx File Explorer, LTE Discovery to get some additional data, Titanium Backup which I don't even really use that much but paid for years ago, etc). I reached a point in the past where I was like "What do I really need to do all this crap for anymore, stock ROMs are actually quite nice and stable, that's more important over the long run that tinkering constantly..."
Been tinkering on consumer electronics since the 1970s when I was a wee tiny kid, just getting sick of it nowadays and want the devices to just work well. Sure I can eek out a bit more in terms of performance if I put in hours of tweaking and configuration but honestly, it works just fine as it is on the stock ROM and I'm OK with that so far.
I'll see about uninstalling Magisk and installing 18.1, see what happens when I do actually attempt to run the Manager and then if that fails uninstall it and give 19.1 a shot and report back.
EDIT:
OK, for whatever reason when I uninstalled 18 and then flashed 18.1 I got no dice, no idea why so I then rebooted to recovery again, removed 18.1, then flashed 19.1, got back into the OS, installed the latest Manager again and poof, voila, now it works.
Bleh, I tell ya, sometimes... 3rd time's the charm, or the 4th, or the 10th, or something.
Thanks for the responses, this one is now done.
FWIW, I upgraded 18.1 to 19.1 on my phone (VS996) a while ago and it's been working fine... just to provide a datapoint. Aside, this also allowed GPay to work properly as well.
