Hello everbody,
My girlfriend has a galaxy S2. Now she want to flash her phone to a custom rom.
Now we want some information what is good for a galaxy S2.
For the S1 i know what I need, but the S2 is new for me.
Who can tell me about this phone. Which kernel do i need and which rom is good with low battery drain?
Thanks in advance from both of us

Well, first of all you say flash a ROM to your phone, not flash your phone to a ROM.
That said, if you're looking for a close to stock experience, with a tweaked ROM you could try this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312240 . It was released yesterday and was the merge of two ROM proyects, both which I tried and liked. SO you will go risk free with that one.
I personally am on CM7 and like it over anything but it's not based on samsung firmware so there is a downside. For example you have to renounce to all samsung apps like the samsung camera which is great and polaris office (which was really bad for me), but besides that it's all great. CM7 is fastest than any samsung based ROM, smoother, etc... Just a little bit harder to flash it for the first time.
Sorry, was not good english. I changed it.
I will look at that, I maybe found something else.
Is this a good, stable rom without much battery drain?

I really don't know about that one. Anyway, trying it cannot do any harm, maybe you find yourself with a great ROM.
Well you right. There are not so many roms for the S2. I hope some people with a S2 with custom rom can tell more about the roms and the kernels...
yes, it is a good rom but what kind of custom rom?
gives us what you are looking for and we can point you in the right direction.
Hello,
She is looking for a stable rom with low battery drain. She does not much with the phone. Sometimes little games, call, sms, whatsapp. She also like a nice design.
My girlfriends mother has a Galaxy S II I9100G, and the default configuration seems to be really bloated. Since I´m new to the S2 scene I would appreciate help to find my way in this jungle of roms
The aim is to find something stable and fast which isn´t built with a super user in mind (as mentioned, my girlfriend´s mother will use it..) Any suggestions?
Its wrong forum but try codebox Rom.

You could keep the phone stock, but remove all the unnecessary bloatware through Titanium Backup.

RootBox 3.0 is awesome

If you want a pure and fully working rom, i'd suggest CM9, works smooth and I have not encountered any issue yet.
JB roms are still stable enough for daily use, but if you really want a rom that works to the fullest, go for cm9.

RootBox V3.0 is amazing you can try it with Dorimanx kernel
I good ICS Rom is GOA ROM 4.0.4 based on Samsung
Its works stable and smooth. I have used for a long time with Siyah 4.1.1 Kernel.
+ 1
Root - > Debloat - > Unroot
It's probably going to be the most stable configuration, meaning you won't have "service" it and she'll a phone with the current stability and security.

Hello there.
I have a i9300 for a year now and I've been doing the official upgrades by wifi, currently with 4.1.2 rom. Problem is I find It slower over time , especially opening contacts and multitasking, the redraw and reopen of programs takes some seconds, which is irritating. I know that having only 1gb of ram dosent help but do you believe doing a clean install would help? Or should I try a custom rom? I would very much love to install a custom rom but I read that some stuff don't work at all with them, is that true or is there one that is flawless that you recommend?
Thanks for the help.
Cheers
Custom roms and kernels address some of the issues. Touchwiz based custom roms always seem to suffer from contacts bring purged from memory. Aosp custom roms are much better at memory management but it depends if you can live without those samsung features.
Its worth reading the "basics" thread before rooting though. Its in general > sticky roll-up thread.
We wont recommend specific roms because its too subjective.
Please post questions in q&a

Thanks for your input, will do.
But can you name some examples of the features that won't work? Also, would it help to do a clean instalation of the stock rom, meaning, is the OTA upgrading process partially guilty of making it slower?
Cheers M8
Its not features that "don't work" in aosp roms (all features work) but that samsungs features aren't there. Only touchwiz roms have them. There are custom touchwiz roms too but as I said, its poor memory management remains which is part of what makes things seem slow

Please name some. I believe I don't use them. Are you talking about a beam? Or about programs that samsung puts in the rom. Sorry man, I am not understanding what you mean...
Smart stay, dive, swipe screenshot, anything that starts with "s"... Watch any s3 tv advert

also aosp does not support the mhl hdmi out. that function will probably never work on aosp roms as Samsung mhl port for GT-I9300 is different in its design than standard mhl ports.
Thanks guys for the answer. I guess I will wait for the next update and see if it helps. Don't want to loose all those features.
Cheers!
Oh and all share cast. There are replacements for that although not sure if it requires new hardware if you have the samsung wifi dongle.
MHL is the big on though (cant believe I forgot it )
tap to top of list

It works flawlessly for me. I really want to stay close to stock so if you are looking for a simple yet smooth stock rom with all junk removed, this rom will work great for you.
And there are no tweaks done that require worrying.

Try blackbox 1.3 ROM. search it on xda. Not claiming it to be the best rom but it retains Samsung's best features (camera etc) and aosp contacts and dialer and everything. Very fast and stable. Hybrid of Samsung and aosp

Hi everyone, been lurking around the forums but never bothered to post much outside XDArticles.
I have had my Galaxy S2 since launch, and whilst a good phone, I'll be hopping to the OnePlus 3T soon. Because my phone still works (and is running CM12.1) I was going to give it to my not-so tech-savvy mother to use.
Whilst I could teach her how to use Lolipop no bother, is there an "easier" to use ROM out there? Or is the CM ROM still the easiest no -frills option?
(P.S I won't need help to flash etc, so I am not too fussed about changing)
Thanks for the help!

For this case i would recommend latest cm 11 KitKat.
I use it for family members, who do not want it to "complicated".
This one is quite up to date:

For gapps use latest pico open gapps.

If your mom is familiar with stock rom, you can try "Neat" rom it's stock based and have great performance and battery life.
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
IIRC, CM11 uses Dalvik RunTime whilst CM12 used ART. From my time with CM12, I felt my phone was laggier and more battery hungry than CM11, although, these forums are saying they saw improvements in CM13.
So, I think I'll replace the battery first, then flash Neat ROM and test. If the results aren't great, then I'll give CM11 a go as I remember that being quite good.
