I thought I would post my Sunday project with my fellow Gear S heads, in hopes of getting some creative juices flowing. Any comments or recommendations on improving my design are more than welcome! I present: my butchered Timex watch band project!
Looks good. I'm assuming you cut up the original band from the watch to fit the pins of the new watch band? How well do the pins stay in, since the band itself is pretty flexible. It seems like the pins would pop out from time to time.
It was shockingly easy to cut the band up with a pair of nail scissors, used a razor and dremel to clean up the edges. I heated a Bobby pin up with a butane lighter and plunged it 1/8" into the rubber for the pin holes, and they've held in place well so far.. Only one incident while I was tying my boots up this morning.
Tldr; hot pin made some holes.
Update: had a second incident with the same pin popping out, I may need to graft some metal pin holders from a cheapo watch onto the band.
Ended up making my own also but using the original strap from a dummy Gear S and the band/cradle from a lunatik kit for the old iPod Nano touch.

That is totally badass, and more of a streamline then I thought possible.. Kudos! Maybe I'll snag one of those kits to have a second option.
Side note, I revamped my design, so it looks more.. Intentional, and makes it more sturdy. I assume I could also swap the band out for any similar sized band. Hooray for super glue!

Yup, the rubber used bonds really well with superglue. Although mine was done with a lot of dremel work, medium viscosity craft superglue and superglue accelerator. Using the dremel to sand and shape the glue after drying from the accelerator. There is actually very little of the original lunatic cradle used when bonded to the original rubber and it started to get pretty thin. I wanted to get it closer to the body of the Gear S but it was getting too thin in the material to do so.

Pics of the backside. Pretty minimalistic. Hard to get good photos with the band on. The charger still fits and functions this way also. As for what I had to do to get it to work. You first need to find a lunatik tik tok kit or any other watchband kit for the old iPod nano touch to use the lugs. And then either get a extra band for the Gear S or buy a dummy with band off eBay. I wouldn't start cutting my original band just in case you make a mistake. The rest is really just superglue with accelerator and a lot of dremel shaping work and trimming the original band.
So did you bond the tabs of the lunatik tok to the old gear s band part that attached to the sides of the gear s.
Sorry, I'm just kind of confused on how you made it work. The pics are good I'm just not sure how you did it. you cut the tabs off of the tok and glued them together i assume. Is it still holding up?
that is exactly what i was thinking to do.. it is prefect.
Wow man they both look great.
ROB your V2 looks really good and clean
And Shadoe that's amazing how you did that looking at it I still have no clue but I'm jealous lol.
This thread inspired me to rip my old sonyericsson BT watch apart and use the metal band for the project. The result is quite nice ☺
Look great man. How is the rubber holding?

Well couldn't help myself. Ordered a knock off lunatik kit for ipod for 11 bucks (with shipping) and a 2$ strap from China. Put em together end ended up with this...
Where did you get the band? Could you send link for the lunatic kit?

Ok so I could not wait for a stand and did not want to go put $$ down on something that was not perfect fitting for the Gtab.
I have lots of tools and wood, so here is my 15min $0 Gtab stand.
I used a piece of scrap PERGO flooring from when I did my kitchen that matches the wood on my desk and it has a foam underside built on to it for no scratches.
I have felt pads in the corners where the tablet touches.
Tab sits at a 45 degree angle. I already have ideas for a adjustable version as well that may swivel.
it has my my enjoyment of the gtab better.

You are correct and I stand corrected. it is more of a stand at this point. It could turn into a dock down the road if the one viewsonic makes is not up to my standards I guess.
Thanks for pointing out my mistake, it has been updated.
Very nice, I was thinking about something like this, but much smaller. Something like a kickstand on the device with rubber feet, not sure why they didn't build something in for using with keyboard, but I guess that is what their dock will be for.
Here is my Lego stand. I actually made it for my EVO but the Gtab fits as well.

Ahh the Joy of Legos... I gave my 5 yr. old son, who reminds me he is 12 yrs. old in Lego years, my ZT-180 tablet with a Lexar 32GB USB disk loaded with 19 hours of 'Star Wars the Clone Wars' episodes... and sure enough I found him watching it on the floor while playing Lego with Star Wars characters and he had incorporated the tablet into his 'Command Ship' that he was building...
He used a LOT more pieces to hold his tablet up
I don't know if my son would let me have the lego pieces to build that, I would have to fight him for them!

This is really the best cheap stand... I used to use one when I had my GenTouch.
Mine was black and actually looked really slick... I'm sure you could find a variety at any thrift store. Found mine layin around the house somewhere.
i bought a stand and it just came in. it works nicely and it was only 7 bucks
You can also use a business card holder from an office supply store. The metal mesh ones work good because they do need a slight bend in the top to add stability.

You can also adjust the angle of the tablet by drilling a few more holes in the base closer to the slot. If you dont have the tools for the slot, just glue a strip of wood where the slot is. Simple!
what's point of tablet if you are going to use it like laptop?

I haven't seen one yet. Someone else may have, but in my experience, it's hard to make silicone that big without either tearing or stretching pretty quickly. What about a bumper like the iPhone 4, where it only wraps around the sides, but the rear section of it is thick enough that the back of the tablet doesn't touch the table when it's set down? I think it would relieve some of the stress from the silicone, and I could use a stretchier mix to keep it tight. I'd kind of like that, and if enough people are interested I can give it a shot, I don't make cases for a living or anything, but I have some friends with a 3D prototyper and a whole bunch of industrial AB silicone. (Yes, I have weird friends.)
That sound quite interesting, I could be interested in one of those.
When using it now without a case I think it's kinda slippery.
I think one of those would give a better grip of the tablet.
What about dropping it, do you think the silicone will absorb the drop?

As much as it could, obviously. The problem is that it won't be much thicker than a silicone case for a phone, but the device is much heavier. Hence, more inertia. I'll grab some chunks of different mixes and test them by dropping a Transformer analog on them. Just FYI, I'm actually using a really large(and wide) rubber band right now to protect my TF's corners/edges. My belt buckle and watch tend to contact the sides of the TF every once in a while, so it keeps that pretty "gold steel" bezel from scratching. I'll see if I can figure out where I got it from in the meantime.

If that's anything like the silicone case I got for my PSP, you don't want it. Far too thin to provide any real protection, doesn't fit snugly, looks misshapen and ugly because it's near impossible to get it perfectly straight, and the thing is a dust and lint / hair magnet like you wouldn't believe.
I literally haven't used it at all since the first time I tried it.

Haven't seen that one, and the corners look more rounded than the Sweet Armor is. I can't help but wonder though about the screws. They go through the aluminum such that if it is dropped and it hits on the corner, the tiny screw will take the hit in shear. Unlike the Sweet Armor where the aluminum shape itself is taking the hit. So, I wonder what they did to keep the tiny screws from shearing off in a drop.

Having never had an iPhone I have no idea what that is. The Sweet Armor also uses screws.
I looked at more pictures. It would appear that this case uses two screws to hold the parts together. One big C and one small C, so to speak. A left and a right half rather than a front and back half like the Sweet Armor.
Also, from surfing Ebay it seems like it might hold the screen further off the surface you might lay it on, which in my opinion is one of the shortcomings of the Sweet Armor.
It definitely looks nice. It's a little pricey at $50 though. Just debating on whether to take a chance or not.

Duralumin
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Duralumin (also called duraluminum, duraluminium or dural) is the trade name of one of the earliest types of age-hardenable aluminium alloys. The main alloying constituents are copper, manganese, and magnesium. A commonly used modern equivalent of this alloy type is AA2024, which contains 4.4% copper, 1.5% magnesium, 0.6% manganese and 93.5% aluminium by weight. Typical yield strength is 450 MPa (65 ksi), with variations depending on the composition and temper.[1]

I'd be willing to bet that the price will come down to under $20, just like the Element vapor knockoffs were for the iPhone. I bought the knockoff for my iPhone and it was as good as the original I bought from Element.

I got Gold Don Star case. I used to have sweet armor case for galaxy s2. When I compare the two the biggest difference is the material.
The sweetarmor is more of metal feel. When it hits something you will definately know it is some kind of thin metal or aluminum. With Don star, it is more of plastic feeling.than metal. it feels durable, and the fit is tight and well, but I hear sqeaking sound when i press right middle body. It is great case overall though. It does not interfere with any reception of gps since the material isn't metal.
Make sure if you have fat finger, you will have hard time reaching for the power or volume button since there is no rubber extension comes with case. I have hard time becuase i have big hand, but i can live with it since the case looks awesome.
Overall good quality but i don't know how long it will last, and the price is bit expensive compared to sweetarmor. I bought it for bumper use only.(i have front screen protector and the battery cover, I will buy another battery cover when it gets too much scratch)
I will try to post a pictures soon.
i bought one off ebay like 3 weeks ago and am still waiting for it.

I've ordered the brown leather strap today, apparently they make them as the orders come in, I have to wait until next week for the shipping + another 2-3 weeks delivery... ouch... not the cheapest one either, but looks really nice. Nice waiting.....
Well I got my dispatch confirmation with Russian post tracking number a couple of days ago, it took almost 2 weeks from order to dispatch, and it's supposed to take another 15-20 days to arrive, plus possibly a few days in customs. I love Russian ingenuity and I hope it's worth it but at the moment I'm not impressed.
Wouldn't the leather one with the easy call feature block the heart sensor on the back?
Also, does the brown leather one (second post) have only one hole?
OK guys, so my strap has just arrived, all in all it was actually faster than I anticipated considering the initial delay.
The strap is really nice, and I mean really nice, it's thick leather with nice grain stitched through with yellowish-brown thread. The thread holds the folded over leather where the clasp is mounted but otherwise the stitching is for appearance rather than function and it really does look nice. I like the embossed logo, it adds character and looks good, it should be on both sides, not just on the inside, but of course I suppose one could flip the strap around
The watch goes into the strap exactly the same way as in the original silicone, the difference is, when the band is on the wrist, there is a tiny bit of gap on top and on the bottom of the watch, I think it's almost unnoticeable, but for sure unavoidable because the watch is already a tight fit, anything tighter and it wouldn't go in.
Overall well executed idea with nice craftsmanship, definitely worth the money. Considering the current heat wave it was getting really tough to wear the watch with the silicone strap, I'm very happy with it now.
I'll put up a few pics in a minute.
PS. Here are some of my pics: https://flic.kr/s/aHskhH4X1r
PS2. My wrist is relatively small so I had to punch another hole in the strap, I used the leather punching tool so it's good, if you don't have one and your wrist is on the small side I would probably ask the seller to add another hole.
Nice review and beautifull pictures, thank you

Thanks for a good review, despite the long shipping time due to the large number of orders. ))

I picked one of these up off eBay, the black leather one with the metal ring to hold the Gear S. No major review since I'm not a watch guy, but I'll say it's definitely more comfortable and less sweaty than the stock rubber. The only issue I had was getting the screw back into the metal ring to secure the Gear in place - I did some industrial strength swearing during that long process. But I'm not great with small tools like that, so others may find it easier.
Do you still offer this one for sale?

anyone else have this issue!? and my arms aren't even that hairy! i got this band
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DCDF9SY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
which is nice, and the black looks cool against the chrome colored watch body...but damn is it annoying when there's some slight shifting and the watch band catches and pulls the hair on my wrist! anyone else deal with this daily? not sure if i wanna keep the band because of this, but i'm SO bored of the stock brown leather band that came with it!
All metal watch bands do this. If you've not worn one for a while, then it can catch. Just give it some time and the hairs will pull away and you will be fine.

haha that's not reassuring. i'd rather keep my hair in tact lol. sucks they all do this..so annoying. oh well, think i'll get the black moto leather band. it's on sale for 25 bucks at best buy
Just asking, are you in a metal band bro? Your dp says so (and the title too XD)
lmao nah not anymore. just do solo work haha

Actually, good metal bands don't do this. They only pull your hair because the links smash into each other, acting like many little pliers. With quality metal bands, the links don't smash into each other.

Not true. I have a 250€ Viceroy with metal band and the problem is still the same for us hairy guys.
Just for your information, Moko (chinese brand that does cases for almost all devices in the market) has nice silicone straps with the quick-release pins in plenty of colors and sizes. Check amazon. I got the navy blue and it's pretty nice.
