Hi everyone,
I've had my N9 for 6 days and I've already got a cracked corner on the bottom left... I'm really angry as I didn't drop it or anything!!! It most probably happened when placing it on the table or something.. Really annoyed, I thought these screens where durable.. Any advice on repairs??
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Forums
HTC will fix it of courses, but the prices won't be pretty. And Gorilla Glass is strong, but dropping it at the right angle or applying pressure can crack it. Yours might've broke if it was installed incorrectly at the original factory.
"I'd Totally Hug You, If That Was Something I Did"
I'm not sure I'm going to get it repaired, it costs too much but I will try and return it in my 14 day money back guarantee and see what they have to say. I'm really p*ssed though.. I didn't do ANYTHING to it.. All want happened was I literally layed it on the table.. I also JUST ordered a case for it on Sunday... Super mad.. I've only had it 6 days and there are only a hand full in my country so exchanging it will be a real pain.. -_-

Google "screen cracked on its own" and you'll see other users that have experienced it randomly. I'm certain it's related to how the device is assembled, but I'm not sure how the store will respond when you attempt to return it.

Sounds like its just a bit off the corner then... you might try some AUTOMOTIVE WINDSHIELD REPAIR GLUE on it. That repair won't fix a screen that is completely spider cracked, but it might help hold it together or make it less visible. Could even hide the damage ENTIRELY from the store you are returning the thing to.
Personally, I would try the repair, and then decide if I wanted to keep it or try to return it.
Wow, that actually sounds like a really good idea! I would send a pic of the screen but I already took it back (they said they would try and send it for RMA so I said why the hell not) anyway I can always try it when I get it back from them and then try and return it at a different store do you have any links for something like this?? Or where to get it ??

Most moderately large car part and accessory stores should carry stuff like that. It comes in a small tube, and sometimes with an injector syringe. Here in Canada, Canadian Tire does. In the US, discount auto parts, autozone, napa. I don't know what car part retail is like in Prague though, sorry.
To give you an idea;

(the two repair kits, not the silicon)
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rain-X-Windshield-Repair-Kit/34163599
I'll try and look around is it expensive?? This is the closest pic that I can find of how the crack looks... Do you think it could hide this?

That loctite stuff is what you're looking for.
You may or may not able able to make use of the suction cup thing. What that does, is it basically sucks some air out of the crack, then pushes the glue into it. To be honest, I'm not sure how the vacuum process would even work on a digitizer. You may only want to smear the glue on the surface, let it soak in a bit and UV cure, then razor blade it.

Thanks man, I'm going to definitely give it a try! Unlike car windscreens that you can see through, I think that the dark digitizer under the glass might help conceal it better no? :-o Any do you have any personal experience with this? Any tips?

Well, my experience with car windshield repair glue is for repairing car windshields. I'll tell you that on a car windshield, that stuff *massively* reduces the appearance of a chip or crack, and can stop spider cracks from spreading.

I saw on a video that somebody could easily tear that kevlar piece out from right under the camera... It looks loose and flimsy, and not well stuck on the back of the phone.
Can anyone confirm this by sticking your nail under the weave right under the camera ? Last thing I want is to buy a phone for 600 bucks and have the back tear up on me after a month.

In day to day use this is not going to effect the device in any way.

It's not the kevlar back but the plastic covering on the top (camera/flash/speaker) which can be taken off, possibly revealing some screws. Other than that there seems to be no way to open the device.

This request/observation is just hilarious.
Why not take ANY phone and try to jam an ice pick between the edge of the glass and the phone. Hit it with a hammer.... does anything happen?
Or drop any phone from a really tall building, cause I'd hate to spend $600 on a phone and not have it survive something like.
Maybe put any phone in a blender, cause I'd hate to spend $600 on a phone and not have it blend properly.

Nope, it isn't.
If I get a device and the plastic that covers the screws gets detached easily it's a build flaw. If the Kevlar thing gets detached it's a design flaw. If you drop your phone from a tall building or hit it with an hammer it's a flaw of your brain.
It's different.
I wouldn't pick at my RAZR like that anyways.

I agree. The guy in the vid didn't use force. Come to think of it the OP didn't really meant to use force and try to open the back cover.
The cover we know is kevlar and durable. The material witch glues it on the phone how durable is it?
Tbh im in love with the back cover of the phone. I'd never put a cover/case on it. I wouldn't want to put one out of need( safe sex suxx )
Obviously, DrUnKenSTeiN is probably the only intelligent human on this post.
Where did anyone here read that I want you to remove the cover or bash it with a hammer ?
All I asked was to see if that thing is flimsy and all I got was raw violence by some members who probably have Attention deficit disorder (syntrix, ianford)
When I asked once if a certain laptop was flimsy, one intelligent human pressed on the lid lightly, checked for keyboard flex, and gave me his opinion.
You may say it's not important for daily use, but so does Android OS or a large screen. A smartphone can be productive without them, but this is not what discussion boards are about.
You may be excused to feel embarrassed, thanks.

Would just like to confirm that the phone in the video DOES have a defect. With all the force in the world I couldn't even get my fingernail under the Kevlar, let alone pry it up. He did it with no effort, like it was hanging off. Mine is sealed so tight (top, bottom and along the sides) you couldn't do anything to it if you tried.

If your phone is sealed then its not something that all razrs got. Seems like a flaw in the specific device.
Its important for guys that have bought the phone and its defective that they wont think that ,this is how the phone is.

I messed around with 4 RAZR's today at three different stores. I even took out a penny that was scarred and I was not able to even scuff the Kevlar. It's on there on all the edges and sides REALLY REALLY good. And, that Kevlar is REALLY durable.
The one in the VIDEO MUST BE DEFECT.
Just take a look at this Video and cry with me. I dropped it from an about one meter high table in my university - on carpet. Well, now it looks kinda greenish, and the colors are all effed up. Sometimes there are more colors, sometimes less (depending on the way I bend and twist my prime).
No warranty will cover this. But maybe I can fix it? If yes, how?
Edit: I've attached the wallpaper used for your reference
Appears the screens ribbon cable came loose. You see the same thing when a PC'S monitor cable comes loose from the video card. You could take it apart and fix it but that should be covered under warranty just don't say you dropped it.
Did you get ADH coverage? It covers drops and screen damage. If not maybe look into square trade?
FYI, I had a roocase executive cover on my tab when it dropped from my dresser to carpeted floor and it protected perfectly.

Cool story bro.
You know what I'm sick of? Idiots that complain about the Prime all the time. If you're unhappy with it sell it and get an iPad.
shoulda got square trade accidental on it..
Before you start to brea-- err.. I mean, "open" your TP, take a look at the following TP teardown link:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5286/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-teardown
This'll give you an idea of what to expect and how best to disassemble with any hope of successful reassembly.
One important quote from that site, "... You'll need a heat gun to warm up the glue to get the bottom to pry apart. Proceed at your own risk, while I was able to put the Prime back together after all of this there's a high risk of damaging your beauty..."
all op needs to due is look at Erusman teardown thread or Buxthda links in signature. there's already videos made here by members on how to do it. Heat gun wasn't needed. Anandtech teardown is still good to look at though to know where everything is at once you open it up. its actually pretty easy to disassemble and assemble again. Just don't go rushing it.

Amidst the flames a few rise to actually help lol j/k, but really, play nice everyone
Yeah, fixing the cable will be covered under warranty, not the crack though. And I'm not sure if they'd just fix the cable placement and let you get it back with the cracked screen or try and charge you for a full front-assembly replacement. I'm sure you could talk them into fixing just the cable though.
If you're within 90 days of purchase, try getting SquareTrade just in case, you could fix it and still get it replaced at a more convenient time in the future. Fixing it yourself would only take a matter of minutes, you can follow my signature to my compilation of Erusman's thread if you feel like trying. I just wonder how that cracked corner will act actually separating the two halves to do the fix, it'll likely be fine. Try a screen-protector if the glass seems actually loose or if the crack annoys you.
Thanks for the advice, guys. Unfortunately squaretrade never was an option for me, since it is not available where I live. I'll try to talk them into just fixing the cable.

As some of you unfortunately may have found out, the back glass on our phones break quite easily.
Do you think we could get a petition or something going on "Change" website to get this problem addressed.
I have read some stories of the phone breaking not because of a drop, but because of temperature fluctuations.
To me, this seems like a manufacturing defect, similar to a recall on an automobile.
Any thoughts are appreciated to maybe get something going to correct this.
Thanks

Have you e-mailed LG support and let them know of these issues. I'm sure they know already but you can't just jump the gun without first contacting them directly. Give them the chance to fix it first. If they say that the temperature issues are normal then yes you can start a petition.
Is the back of this device easy to replace? If it is, it would be nice to be able to buy different backs, like made of polycarbonate or metal. That would be amazing. :fingers-crossed:
Though they would have to be made by a 3rd party, and I doubt any company would actually do it.
I believe that when you buy something with glass vs plastic or metal you should know and accept that glass breaks with pressure and don't hold others responsible for our choices.
That's why i use plastic cups at home lol

+1. Also haven't heard about the temp issue since early in the phone's life. I get people drop phones, and whatnot, but that isn't LG's issue, they chose a glass back, and the consumer chose to accept it.

I've seen some replacement backs on ebay, i don't think the back of the phone itself would be too difficult to replace based on the tear downs i've seen at least. Guess ya never know till ya try. lol
I bought a spare back and bezel on ebay back when they were cheap and in stock, just in case. I work above the Arctic Circle and was worried what going from 70°F to -60°F and back when I go outside and come back in would do to the glass back, but I didn't have any issues this winter. YMMV.

No the phone is completely fine, that's why I'm questioning buying a new back. It's just a cosmetic crack. Using a case now and I still think about it, haha.
I understand that. But temperature has nothing to do with pressure..
No I have not yet contacted them. I will do that and see what they say.
Just wanted to see what everyone's opinion was on this issue.
I saw one back on eBay for $55... Another seller shows them for $365 right now and before it was only $35, so I emailed him and they said its not in stock, that is why they raised the price. Said they will bring the price back down when they get more in stock..
Otterbox doesn't offer a case for this phone. I got a case from eBay for $10, its got a plastic shell surrounded in a rubber type wrap. It does ok, hides the crack some.. but my crack runs across the rear camera.

I see your point, but I don't agree with your premise. It's not unreasonable to assume that the manufacturer is using materials, that won't break when walking outside into the cold. The back glass is supposed to be as strong as the screen (supposedly GG2 also). If the screen broke when walking outside, would I expect the manufacturer to replace it? I wouldn't have done anything that is unreasonable or explicitly outlined in the warranty (e.g., immerse in water or drop), so yes, I would expect the manufacturer to replace it.

The cold cracks are from placing a hotter than normal glass back onto a cold surface. Not from walking outside.

Maybe try some silicone glue
Maybe try some of the silicone seal (blue silicone glue) to attach it. If nothing else you might try some electronic stores (specialty or other Cell phone repair stores) for the glue that is needed. I would opt for something that isn't so hard on stuck and maybe go for something that holds tight and seals well but doesn't make it damn near impossible.
Hi all, I got a good deal on a used z3v(came from nexus 6 just wasn't feeling it much) I love this phone but I have a question the person I bought it from had removed the micro SD and USB flap that makes the phone waterproof (hence the reason I got such a good deal ). My question is where do I buy a replacement I see a replacement flap for the normal z3 on ebay, will it fit the z3v? Or with this phone being so similar to the z2 would i need to order one for that one?
Whoa whoa, that's an awfully terrible thing someone would do to this phone. Removing the flaps is like saying "please let me drive my car without tires and see how this will work".
You would have to get Sony to repair your phone for you because the phone is sealed tight, preventing you from physically modifying it of the sorts.

If they are the Z3V Variant then yes those will work. Any other Z2 or Z3 flaps that are not Verizon will not work.
That sucks since even cases for the Verizon variation is hard to find, oh well still a nice phone and I paid next to nothing for it so no worries as even when I had my s5 I never dunked it in water anyways. Thanks for the advice

I would be real careful with it though. Anything intruding into your phone can easily ruin it. It looks to me there's next to no protection for anything to enter without the flap. You should get a case that at least covers the exposed areas somehow.
How is that different from any other phone without protective covers on the USB? Not being a smart ass just asking. I have a otterbox defender but annoyingly it doesn't cover the flap area

If you look through the side where the micro usb port is, you can see the holes to see the internal where the display lights up. I feel as though dust can easily ruin the quality of the display or ruin the camera lens in the phone from taking great quality pictures.
I got one on ebay. Should be here tomorrow. Shipping was slow but it said it's the original part. Sony would not send me one. They offered to fix my phone for a fee if I mailed them the phone (I didn't get that far so I don't know how much). Here's the link.... Maybe they still sell them. Contact the seller, see what they say... http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=131457513807&alt=web

Depending on how it goes and how difficult it is, if you want to of course..... make a small guide on how to put on those flaps. That might be helpful for some users in the future. Just throwing out an idea.

That's a great suggestion. I don't mind at all and would like to share. From what I can tell in my research, the port is designed like the Z1 and should not be difficult to install.
I just looked at the USPS tracking and my package arrived in Brooklyn NY tonight at 9:58pm. I'm in CT but doubt I'll get delivery tomorrow so it looks like Monday.
I'll be sure to post details. I'm glad to help others. I've sure have been helped more times than I care to admit by others. Besides, I can use some "Thanks" on my profile ?

I just noticed mine snapped off some time today. Can't find it anywhere. Really hope this works out for you and that there will be more stock...

Quick question: anyone know if there's a difference in port cover color between the white and black Z3Vs?

I doubt it. It's just the aluminum strip that's on the outside that show. Inside isn't different at all.

Actually, upon further inspection, I'm positive there's a difference. I found a couple European sites offering Z3V parts, expressly labeled as Black or Silver. Before anyone gets too excited though, none of them have the USB covers in stock.

Seems unlikely that the port cover would be different other than in color. Try chatting with Sony. I did that when I was trying to see if they would sell me the part and they were pretty helpful. I chatted right from my phone using Chrome browser.
My port cover didn't arrive today. So annoying. I'm in CT and the package left Brooklyn, NY at 5:46am on Saturday. It should've been delivered today. Damn 3rd class mail. I feel like I've gotten straight from China packages quicker.

Yeah, I just mean the exterior color. Still want it to be the most perfect though. The white definitely has a lighter silver trim, while the black has a darker, slate grayish silver.

My port cover arrived and after about a half hour of failed attempts I figured out how to easily install it without damaging it.
Unfortunately, the damn thing won't fit. It looks perfect but it won't stay closed. I have to press it hard so it closes but it pops right back open on it's own. Nothing like the other ports. I've contacted the seller. Hopefully they will make it right.
I did learn how to install it and will post the video tomorrow. For now, here are two pix showing the ill-fitting cover.
Waited 20 days for this crap ?
