I experience the same thing because I'm coming from a galaxy s4 and I hate having to turn on my data and off again.

I'm using Tasker and I need some help with a (few) profile(s). I have a few so I'll just number them.
1. I have a profile that turns WiFi on when I'm at home and it turns off when I leave home. The thing is though, I have terrible service at home, so when I lose service, sometimes Tasker will turn WiFi off. The location is based off of cell towers and/or GPS (both atm).
Is there any way to make it so that WiFi won't turn off until I lose the signal or maybe it won't turn off unless it locates the phone away from home. So even if it doesn't know where I am, it just uses the last known location?
2. Is there any way that Tasker can resend any failed SMS messages? Sometimes when I'm at home or elsewhere, I can't send a message so I'd like Tasker to wait until I have service, and then attempt to resend the message.
3. Can Tasker turn on mobile data if I try to send/receive an MMS message? I don't have unlimited data and I don't leave mobile data on all the time, so is there any way for Tasker to recognize when I'm about to send an MMS message (or receive one) and turn on mobile data?
There were some other things that I wanted Tasker to do, but I can't remember now. If I remember them, I'll post them here.
The ability to turn on data when SMS app is active seems to work for me. I set it to be triggered off my SMS app (Go SMS Pro). When I launch it, it pops up a message telling me that the data is turned on. When I back out of the app, it tells me the data is off.

What if data was on before I entered the SMS app? Will it still turn off or will it just return to the original state?
I think if you just want to return to the original state, you will need to set up a different task to set a variable based on whether the data is on or off. So if data is on, you can set DATAFLAG to 1. Then, when you launch your SMS app, you can check for that when you exit and if the flag is set, you know not to turn it off.
Since rooting my phone I have been unable to send or receive mms without having data truned on. I recently flashed miui and noticed there was a toggle to enable receiving mms even though data was turned off. It works great. I like miui but may switch back to unnamed or ICScrewD. Is the way to have this options with other roms, or is this just a rom specific feature?
Thanks

Its impossible to receive MMS with data off. I dont care what MIUI says. IMPOSSIBLE to receive data with it truly off. obviously in MIUI the toggle will selectively turn off data, and will turn it back on automatically to download a MMS message.

+1 this would be a great feature for other Rom.. Especially for those of us with 200mb data plans

Rom specific. UNLESS, you try Tasker. I can't confirm it works, but if you already have the app, try it.
I was just able to set up a profile that would theoretically work. Upon receiving MMS, turn mobile data on, and for exit task, disable mobile data (or add in wait task action, then disable mobile data).

Thats what my had done, i had data off but could send and receive mms. It would turn on to grab the mms then turn off. That's miui is doing, but there is a toggle in the network settings to do this. I'll have to take a look at tasker when i try a different rom.
Hate to necro a thread, but did any viable solution surface over the years? This is, to this day, my main gripe with Android - dumb phone, since it doesn't even have a protocol written into base rom to distinguish ALL data and just MMS data.
Hi guys,
I have installed CM7.2 nightly version on my ace, but not I can't stay connected to the mobile network (bell canada).
If I turn the airplane mode on and then off the phone is able to send messages and seems connected, but few time later, it seems disconnect (does not show a message that lost connectivity, just can't receive or make calls or messages).
Does anybody have a clue?
Thanks

Hi, Hope you can help me solve a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S4 SCH-I545 --
When 4G/LTE mobile data is active:
- incoming calls always go straight to voicemail (the phone does not ring)
- I cannot make outgoing voice calls (it just sits there forever and the call never goes through). If I turn off the mobile data, the call will go through.
When I am on a voice call, I can turn the LTE data on, and everything works fine (both data and voice). I just can't initiate a phone call (or receive one) when mobile data is on.
I am usually also using the phone in Wifi-tether mode, and my provider is Straight Talk.
Please help

Are you using the phone in global mode, LTE / CDMA or LTE / GSM / UTMS? Also, is the phone rooted or have a custom rom?

Global mode, LTE/CDMA
Rooted stock VRUFNK1 (4.4.2)
Xposed framework
It seems now that it's actually a little more complicated than I stated:
Initially (after boot) everything works as it should.
After some period of tethering, the issue appears (no voice calls while mobile data is on). At that point, I have to disable mobile data in order to place a voice call (though I can re-enable data as soon as the call goes through).
Or, if I turn the tethering off, that also seems to solve the issue for some time (even after I turn tethering back on).
I'm using the Wifi Tether Router app, but I'm pretty sure I also noticed this issue when I was using the ROM's built-in hotspot capability (which has other issues).

Try putting it in global mode. I had an issue making calls when I had it in LTE / CDMA. Also, which xposed modules are you running? Which baseband are you using?
How to allow SMS/MMS app access to mobile data all the time
Ok, so I have an lg g3 running stock android 5.0.1 with the normal LG skin. Right now, whenever I connect to wifi, data is automatically disabled, and so I won't receive and mms messages until I next disconnect from wifi. Is there any way to leave data enabled all the time, but ONLY for my SMS/MMS app (QKSMS). If not a setting somewhere, perhaps a tasker task? Thanks!
This is supported out of the box. Normal data automatically connect unless you disable data by a toggle or something.
