[Q]Is It Time To Scrap The Nook? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Been suffering from dead areas on touchscreen for many, many months. Mostly concentrated in one area (above the 'n" button) but right over stuff that i need to navigate and work an app. The only workaround seems to be constantly turn it sideways, upside down, etc. to be able to effectively navigate. A real pain in the a** in my opinion.
I have not yet run across any true fixes for this issue, just tests that confirm what I already know. Is it time for the electronic junkyard? I'm willing to give it one last try but frankly a new cheap tablet seems a better option than struggling with a permanent problem. Suggestions?

Hero keeps "scrolling" to the right...

Hi
I have a weird problem...
Sometimes (not always, but like once every two days), my Hero just scrolls to the right in like every app... even on the homescreen
For example:
-on the homescreen, he scrolls to the right, so towards the last homescreen.. I scroll back, but de hero has its own will and scrolls to the right again...
- in the browser the Hero scrolls to every link (like I would scroll with the scrollbal to the right and it jumps from link to link)
- in an app with different tabs (like People) my Hero also scrolls to the tab on the right, so he goes from "all contacts", to "faorites", to 'groups", to "updates and events" etc...
- in messages, when I want to begin typing, the button "send" is selected in green (like I would've scrolled to the right)... when I'm typing, it doesn't occur..only before I've started typing...
also, I've noticed that like in the browser, when I hold my phone horizontally, the problem doesn't occur.. and when I hold it back ertically, the problem is gone (I think....) ...
Anyone who knows this problem ? Pretty weird, I know
Thanks in advance !
greets
PS: maybe it has to do with the G-sensor (cfr. holding horizontally: no problem...)
I guess that your problem is the trackball, it may be a bit loose on one side so that it will roll sometimes to the right.
Mine does this from time to time. I think it is dirt under the trackball. I just sping the trackball round a few times and it goes away.
HTC support instructed me to send the device to warranty repair due to this issue. Haven't done so yet, though.
Same here, also i think that is a only dust.
After re-spining TB it goes back to normal state
This has been demonstrated a common problem with the Hero. They told me to restore the firmware which is bull. Something's broken, hardware or software we don't know but I should think hardware.
Yeah, I'm still not sure whether this issue is software or hardware related. The whole dust thing seems a bit weird. Especially when my Hero accidently did this -right- after I got it out of the box and started it for the first time.
It's annoying though, but a flick of the scrollwheel always fixed it so far. (or reset)
Ah... I posted previously about this- My fault. Looks like a common problem.
Has anyone found a solution that works?
I also have this problem, for a while I thought it was only me...
I have same problem from time to time, not very frequently.
It's not a "dirt" problem, it has something to do with magnetic fields, which affect the trackball's logic. That's why you see this from time to time, at special areas.
Since a couple of days I have a new problem... the automatically scrolling to the right doesn't seem to appear anymore, but now I can't scroll anymore to the right with the trackball... all the other directions work... could this be software-related then (it cannot scroll anymore in the same direction it used to scroll automatically to...) ??
if it is just dirt... nay idea how to clean that? I've tried rolling with the TB a lot in different directions and even tried with a light moist cloth...

What, the Earth's magnetic fields?!
Actually that would explain a lot! I followed the textbook advice, and re-flashed the ROM. All was ok until this morning, and the screen started leaping left, rather than right!
...So I've reset the device, and downloaded the ROM again, and reflashed.
I have to say, I'd be surprised if it was a "dirt" problem, because every HTC I've ever owned has been very well sealed. (Unlike my Nokias!)
Is there any way to test if it's magnetic? (I guess "with a magnet...")
Ths has been discussed in greater detail here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=546206
Hmmm... no closer to an answer though. I'll see if my re-flashing helps and will let you know.
I'm not sure it's worth returning my unit: sounds like it's a generic defect.
My network definately alters a lot as I travel a great deal. And I'm often in/out of Wireless zones.
Yesterday I tried the simple solution I turned off the device... put it back on.... and everything seems to work properly now even the trackball scrolls great again... don't know about you guys, but this solved the problem for me sometimes, the answer is just around the corner...
It happened on mine today (this morning when I came in to work) but it went away after it warmed up. It was cold this morning (2 degrees C or so).
It's not associated with WiFi, and I've tried resetting, reflashing and even switching off.
The problem keeps coming back though. It's completely random and really annoying...

I am convinced this is a software issue. The problem is easy to reconstruct:
It is as simple as this: If there is data traffic in the background while on Edge network, this happens. I cant see how this could be a hardware problem. I have found this since I am on a train 3 hours every day and has had a lot of time to figure this out.
Sadly I havent found a way to disable edge network.

That's useful: I also commute daily and I think yours is a likely solution.
I just wonder if this is a problem with a batch of Heros... otherwise you'd think everyone would be suffering. It sounds like if I exchange my unit, there's every chance the new one would have the same problem.

[Q] I am thinking about getting the hd2 but i have a few questions before i do.

how would you rate the hd2 out of ten? because i have been to the store and played with it and it seems really good but if one of you has it can you tell me your opinion of the phone.
I also cannot afford the unlimited data plan but i can afford the 200mb a month data plan would that be worth it? i am almost always around wifi so is there a way that i could turn off the phones 3g and just use wifi and not use the data from my plan?
Also if there is a way to only use wifi, is there an app that could track my 3g usage just in case i do use my 3g because i would not want to go over since that is such a little amount of data. Or if there is not a app is there a way to check online, like on tmobile or something?
The help would be greatly appreciated because i am new to smart phones and i really want one, thank you for the help
I do like the HD2! But let me tell you some stuff I think is missing ...
Soft keys - especially if your going to be a heavy android user, the HD2 one piece plastic hard keys feel a bit ... tacky
Camera button - I don't know if its just me, but my old phones had a dedicated camera button and it is just handy
Kickstand - I personally like watching movies or streaming youtube videos, and holding in my hand makes my wrist sore. Sure, there are work arounds like cases with kickstands but it would be good if there was one built in like the Evo
and thats about it! oh, and I don't have a data plan with it because I find myself to be around wi-fi alot and I don't find it justifiable to pay more for internet on my phone than fi-os internet at home!
I love my Hd2 . It's screen is so luscious and its ability to boot Android and winmo is great.
In both Android and winmo you can turn off and on your phones mobile data usage so it only takes data from the WiFi network. In Android you can also select your phone to take data when on a WiFi network when setting up your device.
Honestly Im in love with this phone, but a piece of advice, you must do a great deal of customization to get it in a proper shape, but once done its a king.
Sent from my HD2 using the Swype. !
there are zillion apps (cabs in winmo and apks in android) that let you control data, block all connections, only allow mms and so on. I put my phone next to other android phones and the strangest thing is this device is faster than all others when you have the right build installed. (only boot takes a while, but who cares).
how would I rate it?
+1 PSX games with PS3 controller
+1 4,3 inch
+1 android,winmo,win95,98,ubuntu,..
+1 highly tweakable
+1 everything is ported to this phone, good devs
+1 720 P cam
-1 no front cam
-1 no touch buttons but hard buttons (yes they do get rusty over time)
+1 great GPS, tomtom on HD2 is faster than ANY OTHER GPS SYSTEM, EVEN TOMTOM DEVICES!
-1 resolution and colors (not that it's really a big deal-I don't think it sucks,if you use the right wallpapers and such)
so that's a 7/10 for me
for soft keys, .............install button saviour from jerry fan for android.....really a saviour...i never used hard keys in winmo
I'm also thinking of getting a HD2.
Main issues holding me back are build related & durability.
Screen touch failure/button issue seems all to common
battery cover is of low durabilty finish
overheating
no camera key.
How durable are some of you long time owners finding your devices to be ?
If not a HD2, what are the non android options ?
crazy things you ask there.............best phone build,...
for camera key, try scilors cab to use volume key as camera button in winmo,
you dont use softkeys in winmo...in android you can use button saviour...
every thing has a solution, thanks to xda
i rate it 20/10..bcos its that more than what i bought it for in jan 2010 and it is still the best phone come jan 2011

Overheating is an actual issue, seen quite a few cases in these fora. But you'll know in the first couple days if you've got an overheater, and can return for a new unit. I would say to any HD2 owner, if it feels warm, no problem. If it feels hot, turn it off n let it cool down. Any phone's gonna heat up, but I think alot of the overheating freeze-up problems people get are due to not shutting it off, removing the cover and battery, and waiting for it to cool if it does become hot. Mine gets warm at times, but has never become hot.
The hard buttons still work fine for me, like everybody says, Android requires much more use of hard keys, but button savior lives up to its name. And its really very convenient.
The back cover is kinda low durability, I've dropped my HD2 a few times, it's never scratched, but there is a very small (hardly noticeable) spot by where you pry it open to remove the battery, where my thumb has rubbed the paint off, but the color underneath the paint is almost identical. Some folks have even polished their batt covers for a mirror chrome look. Or you could get one of those rubber cases (I have one but never really use it, but they're not bad)
I have never had screen touch failure, but I too have seen a few cases around here. I would say avoid overexposure to extreme temperatures, don't abuse the screen, and you'll be okay.
It's true that the HD2 takes a bit of customization to get it working great, but that's true of all WM phones. Difference is, when you get the HD2 working the way you want, it's a beast. It's been a very reliable phone for me, and there's enough stuff you can do to it to keep from growing bored and buying another really expensive phone just because the one you have 'isn't fun anymore'.
The HD2, with a good sized sd card, beats any Android native phone, rooted or not, because you have to flash one of them for a new Android OS. You drag n drop a folder on this thing, n you've got a whole new phone. Plus the Android phones will never run WM 6.5, which even though support for the OS is dying, it's a slow death that will go on for at least another year or two, and it's still a great OS IMHO. I don't see why so many people like this WP7 garbage, but that's just me. But hell, you'll even be able to run that on the HD2 pretty soon if you want to.
I would say go with the HD2, it has way more pro's than con's, especially for someone who's into modding their phone.
I guess im in the minority that prefers hard keys over soft keys. theres absolutely no lag or stutter with the hard keys whereas with the soft keys, you're prone to system lag. and what happen if you wear a glove? don't tell me I have to remove it to make a dang call...
I'd rate the HD2 a 9/10 and to be honest I don't know what would be even 10/10 and that's saying a lot.
Ive had my hd2 for about 6 months and I would highly recommend it to anyone. It takes a while to get the customisation right, with apps and stuff, but they are truely great.
I would have to rate it 8.5 of 10. It's a tweaker's phone since it has excellent hardware. If you run it on stock Sense you might feel it's lower than that. If you're willing to put a little time in it to tweak it or run custom roms, you'd be very happy with it.
Sense is very beautiful to look at, but I got tired of it after not very long, I just don't need that much power going to visual effects. Once I switched to SPB mobile shell it's extremely fast, functionally it's not any slower than running android and better battery life. Android on it is running very well, the difficulty is picking among all the nice builds.
For hardware I wish the power button would be tucked away more, I find it often gets bumped and turn on in my pocket or golfbag. I would've also liked a little bit bigger battery. But those are really the only complaints I have regarding the hardware. I don't need a front facing camera and I don't see the need for faster processors. I'd take less processing power for better battery life.
I bought mine HD2 on Tuesday. Man, I'm so freaking happy with this device, I'm sitting on xda all the time (even though we have Christmas right now), I just can't seperate with this phone . It's so great! And those customizations, I mean you can run WM, Android, Win95, 98, Ubuntu, Maemo and God knows what else! And this device is only one year old!
King of Windows Mobile devices (I'm talking about WM version <6.5, cuz WP7 isn't really a Windows Mobile, it's Windows Phone).

my 2 cents regarding problems with the prime

well, i am not sure what to do.
i have sn: BCOKAS005XXX, and i am exhibiting some of the issues. GPS was non-existent before the ICS update. it seems that it improved a little bit with ICS as it picks up 1 or 2 satellites without wifi, but nothing to work with. my samsung galaxy s 4g gets 10 satellites within 2 seconds using GPS TEST.
had a bunch of issues after ICS upgrade with sluggishness and touchscreen lag until i did a factory reset. i do not see a way of clearing the cache as when i do VOL-DOWN and POWER gives me the option to reset using VOL-UP. if i do that, i get sort of the the android with the gear rotating for a couple of seconds and then i get an exclamation mark in a big orange triangle above the android and nothing happens. i have to power down from the button. i am not sure what that is all about. maybe somebody has an idea. by the way, it seems the touchscreen lag improved (still happening sometimes)
wifi still seems crappy. it works, but very slow. i have it sitting next to my computer and i get around 30mb while my computer gets 350mb. i am not sure why the wifi is slow in this tablet. didn't check it on my phone to see what i get. i have only supperficially looked at the bluetooth interfering with wifi issue, as i ran a speedtest with the bluetooth off and with the bluetooth on and does not seem to affect wifi, but i did not have anything connected through bluetooth.
decisions, decisions. i think i have until tomorrow to return it. hope someone can help me with my decision.
so, no inputs?
I hope not......... farrk these threads are getting boring!
I don't know where to begin to test GPS.
Yeah despite weeks of seeing some of you folks make thread about it, I never bothered to check when I got my Prime.
I did come across the Bluetooth paired + streaming over Wifi issue. I can deal with it because it's not so bad since ICS update, crap to marginal quality is better than no stream, which is what I got before the OS update. I'll have to stop pairing BT to obtain high and optimum quality from Netflix steaming though. But oh well.
I can live with it, primarily because the TFP is soon to be on the rare block as the only tablet made of metal, and with ASUS quickly trying to replace it with that ugly plastic TF700T.
I rather deal with the minor pain than to depart from my device so quickly.
I seem to be 1 of the lucky ones with no problem except GPS. If you NEED GPS then this tablet is not for you, or if you can wait few months you'll find some nice tablets. I have few issues but nothing that bothers me. I had a choice ipad2 vs this.... although I think ipad is better (ipad1 owner still) I love the android UI. Mine is not lagging only once in a while... if your freezing all the time exchange it or wait a month...
Seems like your going into recovery mode there with the Vol & power button....here's what you do to wipe....press down VOL- first then POWER for couple seconds (simultaneously) then when you see the writings appear let go then you should be on a screen with Android bot/data wipe box thingy...at this screen press VOL- then press VOL+...wipe should begin....
Return that *****!
Personally I emailed ASUS and told them they have 9 days to either fix my wifi/backplate or I am returning. Plain and simple it does not work in my Apt (wifi) the router is right outside my door and it is a small apt (probably under 500sqft). The building provides Wifi as part of the rent and well it sucks my computer can 10mb/s down and 15 up (I know pitiful). My TFP can connect and get 500kbs in the living room about 15ft from router with a door in the way and drops the signal about every 2mins and in my bedroom about 30ft away with another wall away from the router (2 walls total) I cant even see the ****ing router on my TFP. That performance is bull**** for $600. If they dont fix it I dont want it. I need wifi plain and simple and I am not getting it.
If you are in a similar situation I say return it!
Oh and sorry for the piss poor grammar I am slightly inebriated
Return it while you can, unless you can afford to use it as a paperweight when you get the next droid tablet.

[Q] Volume Rocker Issues

Greetings all, I was just wondering if anyone else is having this problem, and if anyone might have a simple fix other than sending it in for an RMA, and if possible without having to open the device. I doubt there is a solution... And while I can change the volume through the software itself this issue is not absolutely critical, but come on... This should definitely not be a problem.
Anyways, my volum rocker seems to be falling apart. It was originally working very well, however it has recently started to become problematic. It almost feels like it is jammed up or not positioned properly. I don't know how the feature works internally so i don't really know the terminology to use here, but I have had quite a few different Android & Apple devices and never experienced a problem like this with the volume rocker. Basically, I will push up on the rocker and it doesn't actually do anything, it's like it doesn't actually push in. If I look at it, it may look like its jammed in the upward position, and if this is its current position I can push down and it usually will work, and I can feel a faint pop as it comes back into place. This can also happen with the down position.
I have not dropped the device, have not had any accidents with the device, I am not exerting much pressure on the button, it just feels like it is not put together properly or like it may have slipped out of its natural fitting or something. Has anyone else experienced this before? It's rather frustrating and turns my stomach when I think about how much I spent on this thing and the freaking volume buttons don't even work... Sigh...

I haven't heard of it happening on the Prime. Other devices yea, but nit the Prime. Hopefully it's not another wide spread problem. I dropped my docked Prime TWICE in one week,(ashamed) and I have a very similar issue with the space bar on the dock now. The right side doesn't really depress, and it doesn't function. But seeing as it's only the dock, it doesn't bother me, and I feel like I can easily open the keyboard up and fix it if I really want to. I understand I am very lucky to only have this space bar problem after 2 drops onto concrete.
Good luck man.
EDIT: In the meantime, you can try Widgetsoid or the like. There's a nice toggle widget with ALL the system volumes on one widget...notifications, media, alarms, etc with sliders. I use it and my volume rocker is fine, that's how useful it is IMO.

[Q] Issues (stock)

Dear all,
I've been waiting a little before rooting and installing a new ROM to make sure I don't need to return my phone for any reason. (So, it is stock now, no root, locked bootloader, KNOX still there, etc.)
So, far I've noticed three small problems, which I don't know if they are universal or just mine:
Sometimes when I get a call, the touch screen is irresponsive. If I press the lock/power button twice, it seems to work again. (I now have set up to press home to answer.)
It often feels a bit warm, more than I'd expect. (I have it in a case, though, a Spigen Slim Armor. It fits perfectly though.) But this happens sometimes when it is just sitting, not playing games. It is not really hot, but I can feel it warm in my pocket.
Sometimes I get a pop between songs. See this post
(So, at least one person also has the last problem.)
I can live with any of the problems above, but I'd hesitate to have a defective unit which can have bigger problems later on. Is any of the above an issue for you? Any suggestions if I should exchange the phone?
Thanks!
Luis
Do you remember when were the times when the screen was unresponsive?
I've read somewhere that sometimes when the screen is woken up and is under some pressure this will happen, and the only way is to do what you did. It's not uncommon in touchscreen phones though, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The verge app was broken until the most recent app update. Also, the s5 seems to refuse allowing Dashlane's accessibility service from working properly. So no more auto filling passwords for me. Ugh. I hoped rooting might help but it didn't. Now I really can't wait for custom ROMs to start appearing. Samsung, you make great hardware (like amoled displays) but your software sucks. Even the software on my Samsung TV is stupid.
Yes on two out of three!

The unresponsive screen is more than a little issue, it is being reported all over the web, and get's more severe over time. I'm thinking that it is a bad proximity sensor defect, either firmware, hardware or software. Some people are reporting along with myself that sometimes for no apparent reason, the screen will not turn on even though the phone is completely operational! This has happened to me four times now and I am stock with very few apps on my phone, five total games and Pandora. I do use a substitute launcher that I've used for years but I don't believe that would be the issue since others report the same issue with stock launcher.
The pop or skipping you speak of in sound happens to many of us who stream music in our automobiles. It even happens on the note3. The fix is simple for that one though! Turn the screen on. I was told that with many of the streaming software music programs that the phones CPU goes to sleep and does not offer enough processing power to the music program. I stream all day via bluetooth to my Auto's sound system and it will usually start to skip, click or whatever after the phone has been untouched for about twenty minutes. The second I turn the screen on the problem alleviates itself. You can find even more information by googling that one, in fact both of those! The heat one I have not had, both with stock battery and zero lemon high capacity battery. The phone very rarely get's warm. However, when I was using wireless charging it would get warm even after charging was complete but I believe that is a normal event with QI type tech.
