After installing Cyanogenmod for the first time, my phone is no longer recognized by my computer. My computer registers that something is plugged in, but that's it. I can't even access my phone from ADB in the console. I have also made sure that my phone is on MTP mode and USB debugging is turned on. What do I do?

go here and install both drivers for your system and see if that helps.

So when i try to connect my galaxy to the computer nothing happens. i plug it in and it will start to charge but the phone will not have recognized the fact that it is connected to the computer and the computer doesnt even say "unrecognized device" how do i get the phone and omputer to recognize each other?
Did you install drivers for the phone? What operating system are you on?
yes i have. ive tried both osx and windows 7 and i have made sure to download teh drivers for each
Have you tried to connect it in usb debugging mode? (goto settings, applications, devlopment, check debugging mode?
(I dont know of it will help, but it would be the next thing I would try)
And try different usb ports. I have heard before that it can help.
yeah ive tried all of that it and still nothing, the switching usb ports too
Did you restart the computer after you installed drivers?
I would try installing Samsung Kies (from samsung website, GS2 support page). It also installs drivers and fixed a problem I had with connection.
If all these don't work, I don't know what to tell you. Sorry. I am sure someone here with more experience will be able to help.
yeah haha ive done all of these unfortunately and still nothing, thank you for you suggestions though
Kies had an update within the hour of New years (Pacific).
I discovered this morning that USB debugging mode MUST BE OFF for Kies to recognize and connect to the phone. I'm currently backing up my device in this mode right now.
"Kies Air" also works well, without having to worry about any USB issues.
"Droid Explorer" connects fine with debugging turned on. I have to wait until backup is complete to see if it works with debugging turned off.
I'm having USB port issues right now, so your mileage may vary.
Hope this helps.
I've seen an increase in people who have gotten themselves stuck in a bootloop or can't seem to get the combo right to get into download or recovery mode.
Assumptions:
You have the proper drivers installed
Samsung Driver
Your phone is recognized by your PC
Instructions:
Power Phone off
Extract this folder to your computer
Run batch file for Download or Recovery Mode (it waits to see your phone)
Plug phone into computer
Power phone on
Phone should be detected and go into the proper mode
Thx Red_81, again. Glad to see u put this here for the i777. Appreciate u sharing this. It should provide some good help for many users.

So much easier than trying to explain how to install the sdk and then what commands to run. The only problem is you need to have working drivers.

Never mind. I just got it working.
Had to just enter adb command directly. wait-for-device is not working for my phone for some reason.
If you get stuck there again, unplug and plug in the device again.

Thanks i was tinkering with a noria 7" tablet, which hasn't worked right since i got it but for 65 bucks its to be expected, but i used sdk manager to get it to register on my computer as an android adb device and for some reason i tried to turn the wifi on and it crashed and got stuck in a boot loop idk why. like i said hasn't worked right since i bought it. But i did use adb portable like you said to get into recovery mode and it worked great thanks! For other noria users when i figure out how to flash a rom to it i'll start a section here on xda as soon as i figure it out. Thanks again
Any suggestions if ADB doesn't see it?
- Phone was working fine in the morning and at lunch I noticed it was off.
- Try to turn phone back on and it is stuck at the samsung menu like everyone else.
- Soft and hard reset change nothing.
- Neither recovery nor download mode works using every key combo that I've seen suggested.
- Computer detects a device but "USB Device not recognized" and ADB can't see any devices (and I know it is set up correctly as I have the full SDK installed and known to be working).
- Charging still works fine and the battery is now at 100%
- Phone is NOT rooted and has no special apps or any recent changes to change the situation (not even app updates since a few weeks)
I'm not sure what else to do. I will probably let it sit for a few days without a battery, but otherwise I would open it up and see if there is some mechanical/electrical issue like a short or something somewhere. Pretty sure this is a software issue though. Any ideas?

To use ADB you must have USB debugging enabled in settings under Developer Options. If you don't keep this enabled all the time, and it wasn't set when the phone stopped working, then ADB is not an option.
Hopefully, you can get into download mode. For reference, here are the ways I know of, in case you haven't tried something here:
If you can get into download mode, you should flash the stock firmware and then perform a wipe data/factory reset from within stock recovery.
There are several ways to put the phone into download mode. You should try all of them that you can before you give up.
Recovery mode:
With the phone off (and not connected to the computer), and battery installed, hold all three buttons, vol- vol+ pwr continuously until the initial boot screen appears the second time.
Download mode:
1. With the phone off and connected to the computer via USB cable, and battery installed, hold all three buttons, vol- vol+ pwr.
2. With the phone off and battery installed, hold vol- and vol+ (but not pwr) while plugging in the USB cable.
3. With the phone off and battery installed, hold vol- (but not vol+ or pwr) while plugging in the USB cable.
4. Attempt each of the above three options with the battery removed from the phone. The computer will supply the power to the phone.
5. Use Android Debug Bridge (adb) which will only work if USB debugging has been already turned on in Developer Options, since you can't boot into the system to turn it on. With the battery installed and the phone connected to the pc via USB cable, use the command "adb reboot download".
6. Use a USB jig. With the battery installed insert the USB jig into the USB connector of the phone. Some have reported that this method works when no other method would work.

Thanks a ton for the reply. Recovery mode does not work but using your methods I AM able to get it to boot to download mode. If it matters, USB debugging was and should still be enabled.
Now the question is... is there any way to backup the phone from this state or get into a state where I could back it up? I don't really care about my pictures or anything else as those were recently backed up but some app settings would be nice to save (Clash of Clans village without Google+, ugh). I'm going to do more research on the next step myself but if you have any suggestions or information to point me in the right direction I would of course appreciate that as well. Thanks for getting me this far though!

It's pretty difficult to recover information from the data partition when the phone is in a state such as you describe. Maybe the developers and technogeeks can do it. I can't. However, depending on where the game saves it's game data, you may be fine. If the game data is saved to the USB memory (internal sd card) then it will still be there once you flash new firmware. Your pictures should also be fine, since they are on the sdcard.
I've been having two problems with my OG.
The first is when my OG is connected to my computer, the computer recognizes it and I am able to view everything on my phone. The problem is when I open command prompt and enter adb devices to check to see if it sees the phone, it returns "List of devices attached" with nothing underneath. Clearly it is not recognizing the phone.
The second problem I am having is that when I enter download mode neither LGNPST nor my computer recognize the phone. Its as if nothing was plugged into the usb port.
Any help or advice to either problem would be greatly appreciated.
Not sure if download mode needs drivers. Do you have usb debugging enabled for the phone to be recognized in adb? Under development settings.
Make sure you're not plugged into a USB 3.0 port
It isnt plugged into a USB 3.0 port.
What are the necessary drivers? I might've deleted them after I rooted and flashed to The Base 0.73 and didn't think I would need them again.
I feel like I should mention that actually. I rooted and flashed to the Base, then flashed Slick Rom, then went back to the Base. So orginally my computer recognized my phone in download mode but after rooting and flashing it didn't. I think it might be the drivers. I'll check when I get home.
Ok so I downloaded the drivers from LG's website and installed them. I ran adb and it was recognized so that was the problem I had. Apparently after flashing I uninstalled and deleted everything off of my computer and just forgot to download everything back. Thanks for helping.
My computer won't recognize my gs4. I have the latest drivers installed and have re-installed many times. The only thing it does when I plug it in is charge. It sometimes says windows is searching for the latest driver when I plug it in, but it then it then says it was unplugged. ODIN did manage recognize it once and that was enough for me too root it and then flash the stock kernel back on. My phone then soft-bricked at the padlock after some rom flashing and I had to go to my friends house to flash it back to stock. Is there anything else I can do?
Am I the only one with this problem?
Does it give you the error "USB device not recognized"? If so there are some fixes for it. I fixed my friends when I sold him my S3. His PC did it.
Yes, a couple of times it did that. Now it just does nothing.
If you try and remove the device from your device manager does it do anything?
Right click on computer and go to properties to get to the device manager.
What would it be named? I looked through all the usb stuff and everything else and couldn't find anything that would be my device.

It would be any device with a yellow Triangle and an Exclamation point on it. Also uninstall KIES and your Samsung USB drivers, then reboot. Get updated USB drivers from the S4 link in my signature.
It did the same thing and game me the unknown device thing. It also said that the device malfunctioned. I guess ill just try again.

Ok let's try this fix first.
1. Remove phone from PC and shutdown and remove battery to shut off phone.
2. Plug USB cable into PC and phone.
3. Put battery back in and boot phone but…
4. As the phone boots, hold down Volume up and down and don't let go until you see you are in safe mode on the phone. It should say safe mode on the front screen.
5. This should reboot your phone into download mode and install drivers that are needed.
6. Your PC will indicate and recognize the phone.
7. Now if you check the notification drop down on your phone you should see USB/MTP options there in the notification area. MTP should be checked.
Still no luck. Maybe later I will re-install windows or just re install every driver on my computer.
The other fix to try is listed below.
1. Uninstall any previous instance of Kies/USB driver
2. Download the latest Kies, specific to your S3.
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (I've tried newer versions but they all failed)
4. REBOOT
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install Kies + USB drivers downloaded in steps 2,3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.

If that doesn't work PM my your system specs IE RAM, CPU, and HDD Space and current OS.
The computer doesn't do anything when I plug the phone in. The only thing that starts to happen is that the phone starts charging.

Send me the PM with the requested info.
I'm not really requesting anymore info. I am just going to re install windows because I have done so much stuff to this install that it is time for a new one.
Bump
Any luck? My computer won't recognize my phone either anymore.

My experience with the "Device Malfunctioned" thing was due to a bad cable. It would charge, but wouldn't allow me to connect.
You might also try a different USB port on your computer. Often times the connectors on the back of a desktop system, which are hardwired to the motherboard, work more reliably than the front ones.
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone can help with my poorly phone?
My phone broke a couple of days ago and the screen is black and digitizer has broken therefore I’m unable to use it. I don’t think there is any point trying to get the screen fixed but it will cost as much as a new phone would. But what I would like to do is backup the data on my phone.
I have not got USB Debugging enabled and when I connect my phone to the PC, the drivers are installed and I see my phone as a portable media device but there are no files or drives to display the phones data through windows explorer! Please help!?
After some research on the internet I have downloaded [email protected] and ADB.exe but the phone is not recognised (I believe this is because USB Debugging is not enabled).
I then did some further investigation and managed to book my phone under fastboot in recovery mode and selected ADB mode, this connects to my PC and new driver is installed but I am now not sure how I can use this mode to backup my device? And enable USB debugging so I can use my phone on [email protected]
Anyone able to help?
Thanks
Sir,
Please wait until mods will move this thread to the device specific forum for more relevant answers.
Stand by
Good luck
