[Q] 5.1.1 and mhl - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

I have two t-mobile GS5s . Updated both to 5.1.1 . MHL is broken and I have to take some unconventional steps to get it working. Even then I get a floating message on the monitor saying that the device is not supported. Previously all that I had to do for mhl was to plug the phone into the mhl adaptor which is plugged into a monitor or a tv. now to get mhl working I have to un plug the monitor or tv before I attach the phone otherwise I get constant reboots. also if I attach a charger to the mhl adaptor it must be a 300 mah charger . any thing over that will also cause the boot loops.
I called tmobile and they told me to contact samsung. samsung told me to contact their service center. over the phone some guy told me that he had a t mobile s5 that was on 5.1.1 fof6 and that his mhl worked fine. now I am reluctant to go to their center as I am 99% sure that he just told me this to get me off the phone. My question is , does anyone who has updated to 5.1.1 NOT have issues with MHL?

Same issue, and tried contacting Samsung, TMobile, and Google.
I have the same issue you have (and have found at least 5 other cases, including people who have since the update bought an MHL cable on Amazon and sent the cable back thinking it doesn't work). In my case, I have validated that the 5.1.1 update does cause the issue, by testing this on two separate phones. Both had it working under 5.0, and immediately after the 5.1.1 update, the failure starts.
May I ask as to how you did get yours to work? Right now my only options are to send the phone back to T-Mobile as part of their customer satisfaction program, and get a new phone with the older 5.0 firmware, or to attempt to roll back on my own. This is a feature I used heavily for work presentations.
I contacted Android, and was shot down as it was a Samsung phone, and their developers don't want to consider my defect as "Samsung runs a lot of custom stuff".
Samsung gave me a boiler plate response with various troubleshooting techniques that did nothing of value. They want me to contact their support staff for a warranty repair. I already know where that is going to go from a prior experience.
T-Mobile is the best option. Their engineer at least acknowledged that they have gotten numerous defect reports associated with the 5.1.1 update, and took my notes into their system. They even checked for any patches, of which none were available as of yet. If enough people are returning phones for a "goodwill" replacement, I am certain that they will deliver a patch sometime in the next couple of months. However, I would still be skeptical of this.
Regardless, the best service has been from T-Mobile thus far.
I will gladly keep this forum posted if I find out anything more, including possible resolutions. Please do the same for me, including any workarounds you may already know of.
Thanks,
Oz

everyone has their own setup which is usually different from others . I am using an mhl adaptor that is connected to an hdmi to vga adaptor which connects to a vga monitor. also i can attach the mhl adaptor to hdmi input on my tv. to get either setup working I must shut off the monitor or tv and make sure it is unplugged. next i connect the adaptors or adaptor if using with the tv. then I attach the phone . next I attach the charger to the adaptor which must be charger that is 300mah , any higher will immediately cause the phone to reboot. next i make sure the screen is locked on the phone. after all this I plug in the monitor or tv and unlock the lockscreen on the phone. even though it works I get a floating toast message saying unsupported device. befor 5.1.1 all I had to do was plug in . this is alot of work to get mhl working and so far I have not found another way

i just tried my method again. it did not work. for some reason the charger that i used previously at 300 mah is now charging at 1100 mah. mhl now only can work for me if i don't use a charger. try not hooking up the charger to the mhl adaptor.

I have 3 T Mobile galaxy S5's and have updated two of them to 5.1.1 and they both reboot when I tried to connect with an MHL cable to my Brookstone projector. The s5 that still has kitkat works fine with mhl to same projector.

[Q] MHL being wierd and OTG crashing phone

ive had my MHL cable for over 2 weeks now and its got the official samsung logo - and i got it from suntekstore... only problem is i havent got it working...
ive tried with my dads stock 2.3 i9100 on a viewsonic monitor and samsung tv
same with my 4.0.4 i9100 resurrection remix 1.7 + siyah 3.1.2
the other two items i got from suntekstore were 2 OTG adaptors which fail to work... (i also have one that does work from another store) so i think it might be the MHL adaptor itself
yesterday i was frustrated and kept plugging my phone in and out of the samsung tv.... and BAM i got a visual =S after like 10 'no signal' and 2 resolution not supported... but the screen was stuck in portrait... thats the closest ive come to using MHL properly!
on top of that... when i use OTG keyboard connection... the phone freezes if i try pressing caps lock to check for power on my phone! any one else running same OS version and its working?
When successfully connected via MHL the S2 will display in portrait, so that was normal. Apps that run in landscape will do so when run, or where sensor orientation works, like in photo gallery etc, you can rotate it to landscape yourself.
No, as for your issues regarding getting the picture to stay on; first, you did have the Samsung Charger plugged into the MHL cable right, and the correct output channel selected on your tv?
Assuming you did for both the above, the problem is likely with your hdmi cable, not the tv's. Have you tried using different cables? I have a problem with one of my hdmi cables where the screen goes black for a few seconds whenever it pleases, with another cable (which comes with the sky box), it stays on all the time. So try changing cables and see what kind of response you get.
Also, some users have mentioned that they seem to get picture when they put their phones into flight mode first, I've never needed to do this, but give it a go and see what happens. Once you've got your picture up, you can use your tv's remote the control your S2, assumming your tv supports that function.
Hope that helps
I have not tried that rom but last I heard any source based rom doesn't have a working MHL output. I don't know the status at all of OTG on source based roms.
You said you tried it on your dads stock phone but didn't clearly state if it worked or not which it should if the phone is stock. So use that as a basis of if the adaptor is broken.
thanks guys - yeah it could be the hdmi cable... they are pretty cheapo - but on seeing 2 OTG adapters from the same store dont work... the MHL being broken cant really be a coincidence? it was in delivery for over 1 month =[ maybe someone broked it! lol
I think in the end it was the MHL adaptor... ive got a replacement sent out as now the phone wont even recognise power to charge when plugged into the mhl however the charger directly into the phone works! argh may be a long wait for the replacement took 30 days to get my other shipment! may have to resort to a more expensive one

Virgin Mobile EVO V 4G MHL to DVI

Hi...sorry if this is the wrong place, but from my understanding they are the same phone and I didn't see any category specifically for the evo v...
At any rate, so I bought an ikross mhl to dvi adapter, hoping to connect my phone to an 18" LCD I have, but so far no luck with any of 3 monitors. I've connected the phone to a wall charger and tried hooking it up in different orders, to no avail...basically have followed every suggestion I can find.
I've now purchased an mhl to hdmi adapter from newegg for my TV and hopefully will at least verify the general functionality is working (when it arrives on the Monday following this post), but eventually would prefer it on the monitor. I also bought an HDMI to DVI adapter, just as a long shot.
I scoured google before I bought the adapter and every indication seemed like it should work fine, and now have scoured google + these forums again, but just not really finding much info related to my specific hardware.
The phone is rooted, running the latest Harmonia rom and is S-ON...I don't think that would affect it, as everything else on the phone so far has worked flawlessly, however, can't rule it out. There is a guide floating around on how to "turn the evo v into a evo 3d", so if this is rom-related, it's something to try? Requires going S-OFF, but even if it didn't fix anything, at least I'd get the radio updates. But again, from my understanding, the hardware is identical and this phone should be able to do standard mhl, so i assumed mhl to dvi should work as well, but I'm a little unsure about the standards...
Any insight is greatly appreciated and as I always do, if I find a solution, I will post
Still a no-go with an MHL to HDMI adapter, connected to my TV. The closest I came, was the phone went into dock mode if I didn't have the charger connected. Oh and if I unplugged the HDMI cable from the adapter, the TV would say check cable...So the TV was aware that a device was connected, thus it seems the issue lies in the phone.
Anybody have any idea what I could be missing? This /should/ work - the Virgin Mobile site even lists hdmi output as a feature of this phone, but no further mention in the manual and as I said in the OP, spotty info around the web
UPDATE: Just tried it with a monitor again, using an HDMI to DVI adapter, with the new MHL to HDMI adapter, and it almost wants to work - the monitor stays awake (not saying "no signal") and the phone registers that it's connected via hdmi, but the most picture I can get on the screen is but a flash when I change the phone's orientation =/
A second hdmi mhl adapter that I had ordered arrived today (was not expecting it for a month or I wouldn't have bought the other one...oops) and it works on the tv w/ full mirroring
Still a no-go on the monitor - it does the same as the other adapter. The phone and monitor both know it's connected, but only occasionally flashes of video appear and rather than any mirroring, the phone just says "play a video or slideshow" (which does not work).
So I guess the moral of the story: if you have an HTC EVO V 4G from Virgin Mobile (which is more or less the same phone as the EVO 3D) and you want to hook it up to a computer monitor: good luck! I mean, I'll test some more with other monitors on this new adapter but not getting my hopes up. Will post any positive findings, tho...
On the other hand, if you want to hook it up to a TV, it's just a matter of finding the right adapter...in my case, it was pretty much luck of the draw. One worked; the other did not. Maybe the other one will magically start working or will work with one of the new TVs I bought, but we'll see...
Anyway, here is the specific adapter that is working for me: not allowed to post links. Sorry! You all lose. Thank you spammers.
you also need to be on jellybean, or higher for the hdmi to work I do believe, otherwise the phone os if below doesnt recognize or work for hdmi out. the jellybean update made it so anyphone with micro usb out should be able to connect to hdmi with the mhl adapter.
I think its simply a matter of analog vs digital video signal. A computer monitor will need a digital video signal but a TV will be happy with either analog or digital. And I'd guess the output of the MHL adapter is analog.

Samsung Multimedia dock not displaying HDMI.

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me please.
I recently purchased Samsung's smart dock to use with my note 3. It goes into dock mode when i sit the phone in the dock and i can control the phone using a wireless keyboard and mouse so the dock seems to be working as it should. Ive tried 2 hdmi cables on all 3 sockets on my panasonic viesa tv. I just cant get a picture on the tv.
I have tried all the obvious reboots, checking connections etc.
I can't see what the fault may be and I don't have another screen with hdmi input to test it with.
any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Did you plug in your power supply?
Yeah, plugged into power socket using all official Samsung cables plugs etc. It's driving me mad. I'm going to try it on a friends TV tonight. Hopefully it's just a compatability issue with my TV. But I use the hdmi inputs with other several other things as well without problems.
my note 3 is rooted on a tw rom.
So I tried a Samsung brand TV. Still no picture, so I installed stock firmware and tried again. Still nothing, so I guess I have a faulty smart dock or I have damaged my port on my phone. (It charges and transfers data fine without any problems).
I shall be exchanging the dock, but if that does not sort it I guess it's the port. If it's the port then I've voided my warranty by setting knox to 0x1.
Does anyone know how I would be able to test it, because it doesn't seem damaged to me.

MHL 2.0 adaptor with power or no power ?

I just bought a monitor with MHL. This came with an MHL lead Micro usb > HDMI plug so eager to try it I got nothing on the Note 3.
Testing this with my HTC Sensation the lead alone worked perfectly so I did a bit of research and figured that all I should need is a pin converter 5 - 11 pin and I should be fine.
I This
When that duly arrived, it still didn't work. What I noticed when using this though was :
1) The Samsung pops up a message "HDMI connected" when the monitor is on.
2) The monitor scans and doesn't tell me there is no signal - It sits there with a black screen when the note 3 is connected.
3) The Samsung loses it's sound (on the device) but nothing comes through on the monitor (not used the monitor speakers yet so I might no have this set up)
4) The Samsung shows that it is being charged.
Further research seems to come up with conflicting results. Some people say you MUST have one of those adaptors with external power, but others swear their adaptors work fine without it because the Note 3 is MHL 2.0 and only needs it for battery charging.
So I am a bit confused and hope some folks here can shed some light on this matter. My HTC sensation works perfectly with just the lead, I find it hard to believe the |Note 3 won't even when the pin outs are correct and the monitor is clearly supplying power to the device.
Any help appreciated, I don't want to buy an older mhl 1.0 adaptor with power or an expensive 2.0 adaptor if it's not necessary and I do want to hear from anyone that has an adaptor that doesn't require power.
I've never owned one Samsung phone, even when using an official (powered) MHL adapter, that worked well enough to even be worth having the adapter.
I don't know if the Note 3 requires it or not, but I wouldn't even bother with it tbh.
My Samsung MHL 2.0 cable does NOT require a power input with the Note 3 (I still use one anyway). AFAIK you still need a charging input if the cable is MHL 1.0, regardless of what spec the phone has.

Thanks - I take it you are talking of the official one (which came out before the note 3)?

Thanks, it's curious then why my mhl lead with 5 - 11pin adaptor doesn't work directly unless there's some magic in the Samsung unit.
I seem to be clearing the fog on this issue a little but I'm still confused.
It appears that what Samsung provide is and MHL > HDMI adaptor. HDMI and MHL are different ... in some way.
However, when a monitor supports HML directly this shouldn't be necessary at all. As my monitor came with this feature and supplied an MHL cable albeit the 5 pin my take on this is that fitting a 5 > 11 pin converter should be all that I need. Some appear to have used passive MHL cables with success :

But I'd still like any more expert opinions on whether I'm on the right track or not. If I am then I might assume the chinese adaptor I bought is defective in some way.
I don't know what happened but I bought this one and I am surprised! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-O...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item486423fdfe This was suggested in another thread from many users however it was noted that it requires power A/C to work! To my big surprise, the one that I got it works without plugging any power source and not only that but it managed to load my external usb other than hdmi
Those are my first results after 10 minutes of testing it! Didn't have any long term session with it in order to check if it is stable or errorfree!
Because I know some users may doubt it, here is a picture showing what I said !https://db.tt/Gsum0lyU

Thanks for the heads up. Can you tell me if you were plugging this into an MHL compliant monitor or was it just one that had HDMI?

I think No as the TV is quite old and from my usage I didn't see any signs of MHL. But I will test it again in my other TV which is much newer to see if it still works without external power! I Will post my findings on this thread in the near future
It seems that it works pretty fine also in my other (newer) TV without any power source!
Edit: flip the picture as it is wrongly displayed.

Galaxy S8 HDMI not working

I bought the ADAM elements CASA H01 USB Type-C to HDMI Adapter Gold, I tried connecting HDMI to my S8, S8 says HDMI connected but the TV has no response. I am sure the TV works with HDMI as I tested my XBOX on it. Is there anyway to make it work? Or is my adapter broken?
you can try things like switching the tv off/on and the phone off/on whilst its connected. sometimes, not often, that will help
it sounds like hdmi handshake issues. basically a compatibility problem between the phone and the tv.
Thank you for the suggestion, I tried but still doesn't work. If it's a problem between the phone and tv, should I try the adapter on other tv?
I used Choetech USB C to HDMI 60HZ cable to my S8. Everything worked well. https://www.amazon.com/CHOETECH-Thunderbolt-Compatible-MacBook-ChromeBook/dp/B06XP9NV4G/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1495422430&sr=8-5&keywords=choetech+HDMI
I had some HDCP issues when I tried connecting my S8 to a capture device, but that was due to a poor quality cable.
Make sure your device can read the HDMI signal coming from the phone too. It appears to send 1080p or higher, so if your device only understands 720p (some smaller TVs are like this) it might not be able to see the signal from your phone.
I'm having same issue hubbies works mine won't same cord and tv???
Any idea what's going on I just factory reset my phone and still doesn't work
I just got an hdmi to USB c adapter today as well and I first connected it it did not recognize my phone either. The thing that seamed to do the trick was attaching the adapter to my phone first without the hdmi or power cord, then powercord then connecting the hdmi cord and all works well
still not repaired
4 repair invoices 3 months and still not repaired currently on hold with Samsung .... i'm not impressed as this feature was a huge decision for buying the S8+
i use baseus usb-c to hdmi cable - all work good (but no dex)
I have tried two different usb-c to HDMI cable adapters and can't get neither of them to work. Any ideas thanks
Broken and need help
I have a Ugreen Adapter for usb-c to HDMI cable, it worked very well
On several tvs, it WAS working here in Mexico on my ATVIO tv, then I did some phone cleanup and it STOPPED, is there a special application or setting that I've uninstalled????, I'm lost without YouTube on my tv LOL , cant find info anywhere and I swear I installed something on my phone to get it working like 7 months ago in Dallas LOL
biggest thing iv found with EVERY usb type C connectivity issue, POCKET LINT. its as simple as using a sewing needle or safety pin to CAREFULLY take the pocket lint out of the type C port on your device, there are 30 individual pins in there, and they ALL need to make a good connection to your adapter. brand does not matter, if it works with phone A phone B will figure it out (unless your phone simply doesnt support mhl adapters)
Same problem - Galaxy S8+ with Choetech USB-C to HDMI adapter. Worked a couple of months ago not working now. Wife's phone (exactly the same) work a with adapter and HDMI cable. Cleaned, powered on/off, reset phone, nothing works. So frustrating. Any ideas?
I was using my S8+ with my TV. After a couple updates ( prior to Pie) no longer worked. Please don't suggest turning things on / off or factory reset.... The cord is fine. My phone just now updated to Pie, I thought great, maybe it will work again..... nope... I've contacted Samsung, same BS runaround. Samsung - must be a compatibility issue, Me - it was working, Samsung - must be the cord, buy a new one, Me - already did, tried two different brands, Samsung - was one of them Samsung, Me - ......., Samsung - try factory reset, Me -....... by this time I know I'm screwed. There WAS something to do with an update. (And yes prior to the Pie update I did a factory re-set with no results). From the comments on this post appears no one has a solution....
